Gaming websites that aren't shit.

That is gaming news, forums, or generally communities.

I find myself only going to /svidya/ nowadays. Back in the day (read: 9+ years ago) I used to browse the rpgconsortium.com for my forum needs, but all the gaming news sites I've followed have become corrupt or otherwise shit. Could anyone recommend me some that are compatible with chan culture or are just not shit?

Try techraptor? They have forums, iirc - and I remember reading in a thread a few weeks back that some of them lurk fullchan.

3bd06a No.1982

I hear Nichegamer and some of the other newer sites that have sprung up aren't so bad. Personally I just get my news from /svidya/ and /v/ when I feel like shifting through trash for it.

One of the few that I still follow is Gatheryourparty.com they have good stuff. I might send in my Sonic Boom thing to them, or I might make it a video on my youtube channel and submit it that way.

For forums, the only one I can suggest is rpgcodex but I'm not even a member.

I used to follow Sneaky Bastards but they apparently offed themselves after their twelve part Thiaf analysis.

I'm a fan of http://www.4playernetwork.com

I started listening to their podcast about 2 years ago, I think. They've been around for a lonnnng time. They aren't meme lords, they aren't HURRRDCOORRRE gamerz, they aren't casual. They just like video games. They stream just about daily, and the podcast is every Tuesday.

They also are converting slowly to patreon. Oh, there's an active forum, too.

Or maybe they're just hiding. You never know.

I realise there's little to write about but there's been a few pieces of news (which they never wrote about in the first place) and some games they haven't written about yet. Hopefully it's just a temporary hiatus.

Gather Your Party is pretty great if you ignore Chris Wagar's stuff. The guy is a black-and-white no-fun-allowed legit autist who proclaims that the stuff he likes or thinks is the only way to like or think about stuff, and that anyone who disagrees with him is a casual faggot. On a site that otherwise prides itself on open discussion and a consensus that fun things are fun, he's the thorn in its side that won't go away. He's kept around since he's been there for years and is sadly the only guy with the time to consistently put out material.

In addition, they have some organizational problems since they try to be decentralized yet have bottlenecks in the editing and publishing process that require a strong measure of centralization. I'm sure they could easily put out 3 articles a day but the "it'll happen eventually" mentality that comes with a volunteer-run website means they're lucky to have 3 articles a week. There's definitely room for a lot of improvements

Full disclosure, I wrote for them for about a year, mostly on stuff they still don't cover, like GS games or sims. Real life and disillusionment with the state of games meant I didn't have the time to write any articles anymore, especially since a lot of the games I had planned to write about got cancelled or went to shit. My first article was about a game that seemed to be on the right track but two years later is so garbage that even its retarded forum base has been complaining about its lack of quality.

In any case, it's a pretty good website to go to, but has its faults. Since it's volunteer-run and open to submissions, you can probably join up and turn things around if you give even the slightest bit of a shit. 7/10 not the worst.

How is it you guys know so much about their lives? I read GYP on and off for a few years and I was never able to perceive much about them other than what they thought about videogames.

0ad45a No.2754

>>2740
>Kyle barely does shit
Somewhat true. His autistic drive for a completely arbitrary definition of perfection means a lot of major stuff like the GYPodcast or themed features get pushed back to the point of irrelevance. He's repeatedly stated that he wants to step down from his role but since nobody wants to take up that mantle nothing gets changed.

>>2742
I'm still Steam friends with a lot of the OG GYP crew and I have access to the communal Google Drive repository where all their contact info and short meet-and-greet bios are posted amongst other things.

The former means I still talk with a few every now and then. The latter means I still have a lot of access to their inner workings. My moral and ethical beliefs also mean I won't do anything with the latter either, since that'd be a shit move.

>>2689
At this point GYP needs a turning-around and is still salvageable. Five things are needed:
1. Replace Kyle, not necessarily get rid of him though.
2. Consistent content output. No more week-long droughts.
3. Use the resources and framework already set up. There's communal youtube, twitter, and facebook accounts that never get used since everyone at GYP is jaded on social media.
4. Get rid of Chris Wagar and tell him to fuck off entirely.
5. Listen to Catsman way more. He's run GLA for years now and it's still more popular and arguably more informative than GYP has ever been. He has good ideas but his mutual refusal to work with Chris means none of them get implemented aside from site design.

How would you suggest those problems be dealt with? As an outsider with no history in writing about games beyond forum posts, I don't think I have the leverage nor the ability to solve them.

Would it be better I just try to contribute to a different project, or try and help get a separate GYP-type site done with the help of /svidya/ and /v/? I'd actually kind of like to submit my Sonic Boom thing somewhere, but I have the feeling I might just make it a youtube video now.

Laffo. GYP is the best example of /v/-born journalism sites out there simply by virtue of lasting more than a month. You can try but it's difficult as hell.

>>3242
He has an extremely black-and-white view of game mechanics and his opinions tolerate no flexibility. If there's any room for subjectivity in his articles, he fills it by getting on a soap box and declaring that his opinions and his views of what fun entails are the only ones in existence, and that anything else is casualized garbage. This often means that he wants every shooter to be UT99 or Quake, he wants every fighter to be KoF, and he wants every smash game to be carbon-copies of Melee. In his world there is no room for party games, casual online shootfests, anything with an unpredictable RNG, and any game without a competitive tournament scene.

Normally I wouldn't mind this from anyone else, what with the open and free discussions that GYP upholds. However, there are two issues behind the scenes with Chris:
1. He's the only one with enough time to consistently put out articles, especially during drought periods.
2. In terms of seniority, it's essentially Kyle, then Rob, then Chris. Rob doesn't want to become EiC at GYP, and I think Kyle is only hanging in there because he knows that Chris would be miserably bad at the job.

If you want an example of what's wrong with Chris, look at any of his articles and find the posts by Freakydemon or a commenter named Nigger. They bring up fantastic points that often turn into shitstorms.

However, Chris hasn't posted in almost 2 months so I'm optimistic that he ragequit or finally got the memo that all he did was stir up shitstorms.

3133a2 No.3740

I followed GYP from around it's start until sometime in late 2013 when I just gave up. The content just wasn't there… Not enough writers, etc. Last year they started looking for a lot of positions, and I was kinda surprised at how the site had grown. I actually submitted some stuff for two positions but was turned down.

I think the problem they really suffer from is they kinda pull in too many different directions.

Reviews. News. Podcasts (there should only be one god dammit). Videos. Streams? and more. and more.

Really, they should take a step back. If they want to go in the pod cast and stream direction ala 4 Player Podcast, that's fine. But they should kinda make a choice.

I know what that's like. It comes from too much ambition, too little focus, and inadequate use of resources. If they could just do one thing, and do it well, they'd have more resources to spread around and expand to meet their ambitions.

It's a logistical problem in essence.

I don't remember him beyond his points in Chris's recent iron sights article, but he was a proper fucking moron there. If Chris is a legit autist who wants every game to be Quake/KoF/Melee, Freakydemon is a legit autist who wants every game to be Arma/Red Orchestra. He was somehow convinced that the addition of real-life firefight tactics to Quake would be a good thing, and that every shooter would in fact benefit from it.

I've never noticed any problems with Chris's work, though I read most of it when it was first put up onto the site and I was much more autistic then than I am now, so I guess that doesn't really say anything.

Your best way to get gaming news is to basically just subscribe to the Youtube channels of game companies and developers. You'll know what's coming out without any bullshit thrown at you. Finding straight gameplay footage of any game is also easier than ever. Just type the name of the game in, pick the first gameplay vid or Let's Play you see, mute the sound if the faggot's voice annoys you, and just watch.

There's also a fair number of very good long-form vidya analyzers on Youtube, a lot of which don't get a lot of recognition. No doubt you know who Matthewmatosis is, but have you ever heard of Perils of Pokey?

I want to 100% recommend sites like Techraptor and Nichegamer, but they write GG and anti-SJW-pandering shit unrelated to video game news with a disappointing frequency. I don't care if it's politics I agree with, I want ALL of that shit out of my hobbyist press.

As for vidya communities and sources for conversation…I honestly don't know. It's a shame, because the imageboards are probably the best of them, and they're STILL all shit. It's a tragedy that /svidya/ is so barren.

I honestly think that the best place to get your vidya discussion at this point is live conversation. It's almost sad to say, but I think the best video game discussion I ever took part in was in a twitch stream I watched hosted by Pokey and a DMC4 player and speedrunner.
