Grand Strategy Anonymous 03/13/15 (Fri) 02:56:53 b464c7 No. 2300
Grand strategy games, nerds. What are you playing? I just lost about 6 hours to Crusader Kings without realizing it. Started a challenge run with Asturias with some /his/ podcast playing and now a hundred years on and I've unfortunately broken the muslims backs in the first two wars and spent the majority of the last century steamrolling them, making new kingdoms, and watching them go through about 13 catholic uprisings now. Charlemagne died 10 years into his reign with no children, so until a few years ago all of France was Middle Francia governed by Carolamn's line. Can't ever expect how this shit will go. Have any fun stories?

Tried to get into EU4 again, couldn't. Too much important stuff gets abstracted which ruins the abstracted things because they don't model stuff well at all that more simulationist games like Vicky 2 can model well. Also, devs keep shitting on everything fun for the sake of multiplayer balance. Who the fuck even plays grand strategy multiplayer? More than half of Paradox grand strat doesn't even have working multiplayer what with all the abysmal netcode and constant desyncs.

>Umayyad, bro? I'm about 300 years into my Asturias game and once again Hispania is under glorious Visigothic control. The only province I have left to conquer is Alto Aragon which fucking Aquitaine managed to nab from the mudslimes a few hundred years ago. I'm not sure where I'm going to go from here though. I've been thinking of installing the Commune of Rome mod and having a go at that.
Anonymous 03/14/15 (Sat) 16:13:40 b464c7 No. 2665
>>2664 I'm about 150 into mine. I just have one last duchy to take from Umayyad in a holy war, and they'll be stuck with just one county in Barecelona before getting kicked off the penisula. After that it's just forcing some of the minor powers that came to be in Toledo, Barcelona, and Protugal from some of the successful catholic uprisings. I managed to get the Petty Kingdom of Cornwall from a mother too, so I guess I'll start trying to take over Wales from there after I've formed Hispania.
And Commune of Rome is damn fun, one of the better Roman mods out there I think. The problem is that it's A. Dead and unsupported and B. Makes the game way to easy after the first few decades. The fact that you can form the Western Roman Empire, but stay as a consul and it's still technically a merchant republic sucks, because you're raking in a hundred gold per month by that point and there's no stopping the map painting when you get out of Italy.

EU4, HoI4, and CK2 are all shit. Do NOT play them. Only play Darkest Hour, Hearts of Iron 3, CK1, EU3 and Victory 2. Anything after Victoria 2 is garbage due to shitty gameplay and DLC policy.

>>2665 Well, early 900s. Formed Hispania. My son may or may not be the antichrist. My older brother became Grandmaster of the Knights Templar and then won the majority of a Crusade for Shia Byzantine Empire. So now all of Greece belongs to the Templars.

I'm into galciv 2 right now, but since I'm kinda new into the whole grand strategy thing I really don't know if it truly is/isn't grand strategy. I find it fun as hell but I can't seem to grasp its mechanics and pace properly, mainly the economy and military aspect of it. When I play terran-like tech I always run into deficit problems and juggle like a retard with the spending rates, yet when I tried the korath/drengin tech I never once had any problems with the treasury despite me playing in a very similar manner. It may have to do with me not being able to properly ascertain which tech to research in order to acomodate to the playstyle, in other words, I don't understand how to git gud. What strats do you guys use when you're in galciv? I preffer cultural conquest because fuck your shitty pleb tier customs and norms.

>>6432 I actually bought galactic civilizations when it released. I have the disk and everything.
I'd typically go for conquests since I love designing big silly ships and letting them annihilate whole fleets, but the culture/influence part of GalCiv2 is also very fun to play with. If I hadn't exhausted myself on it I'd probably play it to this day.
I also don't consider it 'gsg' as it's more of a 4x design than anything else.

Need more Dominions 4 and Distant Worlds in here.
There was that recommendation image back from halfchan and if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have discovered Distant Worlds, the game Sword of the Stars 2 should've been. Probably my favorite GSG for a while now.
>>6432 GalCiv is a mostly 4x game. The way I look at the difference is that GSGs revolve around the core concepts of games like Civilization or GalCiv, but are on a grander scale and usually go about the 4 X's (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate) in various ways with the availability to do what you want.
Speaking of though, you might like Distant Worlds if you want a space empire game. I popped open a tutorial and took some screen shots of the scale. First image is the galaxy map, showing all the solar systems and sectors, and the second is a planet in one of those solar systems.

>>6862 Try to marry your heirs to princesses of other kingdoms that you want, or if your a vassal to your lord's family so you have an easier time weaseling your way into the ruling family. Make alliances with nearby kingdoms, and preferably don't start next to Muslims since they're OP as fuck.
Anonymous 03/24/15 (Tue) 17:53:36 a5349f No. 6869
>>6862 Are you trying to wage war and pissing people off or something? Just check what rulers have shit with, like alliances through marriage and stuff. Then marry off your heirs for alliances/claims and fabricate on weak counties. You could also attempt to kill rulers/heirs or try to cause rebellion and stuff to make it easier.
I roleplay it, as in I use the traits that a character has to decide how I will play them. Maybe that'll work for you and help you figure out what you're doing? I don't know.
Here's this guide I found, I don't know if it's useful.
http://www.ckiiwiki.com/Beginner%27s_guide I think most of the Irish folks use gavelkind, so if you try out one of those you need to switch as soon as possible to primogeniture or whatever it is.

I always find CK2 unbalanced in the endgame (1350-1450) usually the anitpopes start stacking making it impossible for christians to stay unified, byzantium always gets kebabed hard within 100 years of starting a game, the muslims just unify and never break apart no matter the decadence forming a massive blob from spain to india and mongols just spawn infinite units before anyone can do something about it. I'st like in the start of the game everything is balanced but then small feedback loops start growing out of control and just always end up the game ahistoriclly.
