So there's going to be an MKX stream sometime today and I figured I should make a thread that's not completely dead. Johnny Cage got a trailer in the game, confirming he's in the game. Sonya is in it too, for some reason.

I know some of us are bummed about the Jason announcement but anybody else interested that they mentioned two outfits? Ronin Kenshi and Samurai Shinnok, Kenshi's sounds neat, going to have to see Shinnoks before I get an idea.

Essentially they find vulnerable fanbases that might have legitimate concerns over a game and they bandwagon on those concerns for an entire thread so that no one can actually discuss the game anymore.

Been trying to gauge the reaction of Jason thus far. MK fanbase in general is mixed on it with a leaning towards negative, they are more hostile to this than with Freddy. Normals are more positive but still kind of a mixed bag. Only people who are really eating this shit up is people on Youtube. This is really going to suck if this becomes a routine of horror guest character. At least Predator has some history with this series being the inspiration for Sektor and Cyrax.

That IRC plus the later exodus waves has taken a toll on /v/. September /v/ was really like circa 06 /v/. It's why I spend my time here even when it's not active. I think crossovers can work but some just work better than others. Video games are the easiest because their are so many that can match MK's vibe without feeling out of place. Next would be Anime/Manga stuff, a lot of them have super powers of some kind and their heroes usually kill. Also helps it's eastern so it matches the vibe of MK. After that would be comic characters. I see a lot of people shit on the idea but I really think comic characters match better because of their abilities. Only problem is most of the heroes go by a no kill kind of thing. Finally comes movie characters, only Xenomorph and Predator are a match I think. Both are more beastly than human and can kill full grown people easily and are extremely resilient.
The only thing these horror characters have in common with MK is being supernatural and gore. I just don't see a Freddy Krueger matching up with an undead assassin like Scorpion or the incredibly slow Jason out maneuvering a thundergod like Raiden. These games aren't exactly the apex of realism but some things just don't mix that well. This coming from someone who can enjoy those movies.

Johnny looks like he could be top tier. Story mode looks nice though I'm worried it might get too serious. I wouldn't want a "Damn Fiddle" sort of line happening. The delivery by Johnny's new voice running to Sonya in the helicopter sounded so hammy and not the intentional kind. I'm impressed the lengths they are going for this one though. Not a fan of the QTE stuff but if it lets you have the option to have different outcomes to cutscenes it could be amusing.
I think Mind Powers was legit, there is an unlock at the end of the story and that matches his statement that Shinnok is that unlockable. >>2509 I'm almost certain Tremor will make it in. It'll be interesting to see what they do with him.

Stalker variation - uninterruptible special attacks, a parry and is able to charge combos like johnny
Drowned variation - Jason has water-based special enhanced moves and a slide-on-water attack

I go personally ruse cruised I can't think of any variations in detail but I can imagine some of the aesthetic changes for each. Maybe for one he has his normal mask, the second with his bag mask from 2 (Something Tor already kind of has) and 3 being maskless or Jason X mask.

Jason is a hulking beast, if you try to attack him he'll just shrug off blow after blow, then just toss you like a rag doll or machete you in half. Ive always felt he's never nessecerly been slow, but more stealth based, silent as he just walks to his victims. It probably helps that he knows the camp grounds more than anyone probably ever could.
Also, he tends to use whatever is around him to kill should he feel like it. He prefers quick, easy kills, no torturing, no taunting, just taking them out. Flag mounts, sleeping bags, breaking you in half against a tree.

Some more info on Johnny is that he's being voiced by a guy named Raphael Sbarge rather than his voice in the last game Jeff Pilson. Maybe it's because his last voice was in a couple of bands that I think it sounds like a more genuine "larger than life" voice he should have.

They are really hyping the next gen kids a lot, especially Cassie. Yet the last gen's stories sound more compelling. I hope they don't get overshadowed. I like Cassie's personality in the komics, story wise she doesn't seem to have much going on beyond her connection to her parents. As much as she's grown on me, I almost dread bits involving her just because it means Sonya will be around. Still I'd like to see Cassie and her dad interacting. Takeda has the most interesting story, hopefully we see more of him. Worried about Jacqui and Kung Jin, neither have really been all that talked about. Especially in Jacqui's case as she was playing sidekick to Cassie for her chapters. The only element she really has going is that she had daddy issues that's already a part of Takeda's deal. I'm guessing Kung Jin will get his time to shine soon enough. He has an interesting enough background that I won't think he'll be boring. He'll be a nice contrast of a punk runt to his honor bound relatives.

They've developed and progressed the stories of a lot of characters in this game. Reptile getting his waifu and reviving his race sounds totally within the realm of reason.
It's entirely possible too that Shinnok survives this game.
That's interesting to think about. What if someone kills Blaze before the brothers complete the quest? Would the power merge into whoever killed him?
Shinnok being the boss of this game could mean some further info on the One Being. I was disappointed they didn't actually show it despite hyping it up in Deception.

With the Predator reveal and news Kojima leaving Konami, my hopes to see my two favorite franchises ever crossover is dead. I was really hoping things would work out, the Sutherland rumors, the fact Snake wasn't in Kerfuffle, both games aiming for a release of this year, the stars were really aligned. I'm at least happy with the Predator, he has some history by being the inspiration for the cyborg ninjas. I'm even warming up to Jason.
I just hope NRS doesn't keep up with this trend going into future games. There are still plenty of guests I'd like to see, Dante, Pyramid Head (even if he too is a slow horror character), many other vidya characters and even some manga characters. They are all so slim in chance in comparison to movie icons I think no more guest characters would be better.

After hearing how they were trying to 'jam' as many characters as they could in, the fact that modifiers of old characters are in, their models confirmed for story mode via the GDC previews and that Fujin is likely an NPC. you have to be able to block , since I play mk since mk2, so I don't share your frustration.
I hate ex moves, the thing I most hated about mk9, try to play without them, or play older mks, trying to get used to it, and for new tactics, you have to play diferent according to the kharacter you are facing, you won't be able to do certain things as easy as you can againts other.
Also, I know that a lot of people who don't play mk that much, don't know how to use block button, so try it as well, it may leave you to do combos and specials much easier, when you know when to counter without using the special bar.
I understand your problem is facing someone using the block button Don't rush, take your time, I usually let my opponent have their first moves.
also, in mk9, is best to attack when the other is mid-move.
try Ultimate Mortal Kombat, I think it's great for starters, since mk2 and mk1 are 'combo-lles' and some people don't like it.

What got me to like him was supplemental stuff like the Movie giving him some personality that reminds me of the current Kombat kids. Shaolin Monks also helped a bit even if the writing and dialogue were laughably bad at times, it expanded upon his relationship with Kung Lao.
2011 really did wonders for him. It added to the tragedy of the ending that not only was he killed by Raiden himself but that he had completely lost faith in him before doing so. We get to see the honorable calm hero we've known for years in the first chapter, the fiery rage of the warrior after Kung Lao's death, when we see him snap at Raiden for suggesting they go to Quan Chi is one of the more jarring moments in the story and I loved it. It shows he is not a completely invincible hero, he can be broken and it showed a humanity many had wanted to see from him since the beginning.

Normally I don't ever talk about graphics and visuals but anybody else impressed with how this game looks? I was watching some Tekken 7 gameplay and the characters look really plastic and that's running on UE4 by comparison to MKX on UE3. It feels weird saying I think MK looks better than Tekken visually when it's nearly always been the other way around.

The preview stuff reminded me of Call of Duty cutscenes for some reason. Raiden, Fujin and the monks vs the NetherRealm demons felt way more like an actual movie. The camera angles they use for it are way more true to a cinematic style than games that claims to be a "cinematic experience". Some examples being the reveal of Raiden and Fujin, Fujin tossing the demons into the air and their fall, the pan around shot of Fujin staring at the surrounding demons and overhead view of them fighting them off. Shinnok fighting Johnny one armed, Neo vs Agent Smith style, was pretty neato. the sound design is really great too the demon roaring sounded like a fucking Kaiju
