Who Pokemon here? Who /vgc/ here?

c9841d No.2461

I did recently do a (failed) Nuzlocke in Sapphire (and caught my first shiny). It wasn't as bad as I remembered it because I never did get far into it as a kid.

I've been meaning to emulate Gold on my DS (or wait until I get a PSP - because I the lack of light on the older handhelds drives me mad). Just for a regular playthrough though I definitely want to do another Nuzlocke in the future, that was really fun. I think if I hadn't done the Nuzlocke for Sapphire, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.

>/vgc/

I have no idea what that is.

I think I'll get one of the new ones for my future 3DS purchase. It'll be my first time playing a Pokemon game since Green.

Has the franchise evolved at all since I've been gone?

Of course it has

>day/night system

>breeding
>Contests
>various tweaks to gameplay and stat systems
>Mega Evolutions
>Steel, Dark, and Fairy types

Just enjoy the games, bro

Yep. Gen II added in breeding, shinies, Day/Night, Dark and Steel types, Pokegear (most games since have had a variant of it though it's not exactly the same thing) and Battle Tower (some of the later games have expanded it into a full post game challenge section called the Battle Frontier, starting with Emerald), Gen III added natures, abilities and contests (usually a variant of this has shown up in later generations though it doesn't always handle the same), Gen IV introduced the Physical/Special split helping make some Pokemon a lot more viable (for example, a water type with much higher physical than special can now make use of its stats since Waterfall is now a physical move rather than water type moves always being special typed), Gen V introduced hidden abilities and TMs not breaking, and Gen VI (which admittedly I haven't played just yet) added Fairy type and Mega Evolutions.

Probably more stuff, but I don't entirely remember everything. Been a while since I played the series, but each generation seems to add to or tweak stuff in some way (though I suppose it could be argued that some of the things aren't entirely necessary), and there's now a lot of variables and potentials to each Pokemon between IVs, EVs, natures, and abilities, and from what I recall starting in either gen III or IV the overall movepools started to get a lot better than they were prior.

I hope they do it eventually. The Wii U is perfect for it. It worked for Fatal Frame apparently (I hope that gets localised).

>I heard there is a romance going on, truth or wishful thinking?
I don't watch it but apparently it's been obvious for a while that the brunette girl with the hat and Fennekin has a crush on Ash/Satoshi and he's been oblivious to it.

>pokemon stadium
Maybe, though I suppose it would depend on how Revolution did (while not Stadium, that was the latest Stadium-esque game, right? Might be wrong), though as >>2521 puts it, with the main games themselves now using 3D models, the big draw beyond the minigames in Stadium is likely gone.

Might be just me, but I'd love another Colosseum style game. Was pretty fond of a number of aspects to those, such as the overall vibe, setting, more limited options making you have to branch out and try some Pokemon you may not have looked into prior since your choices are fewer, and bosses having an actual strategy to get past rather than straight up type advantages.

>>2524
Well, Serena has a rather blatant crush on Ash, who from what I can tell is still pretty oblivious to anything of that sort (and didn't even remember their apparent meeting at a camp as kids together, or whatever). At least he seems more competent than he was during the BW saga.

I was just about to play through Platinum again on an emultor because I accidentally my DS Phat and have yet to purchase any newer model because none of the games on the 3DS interest me except for MH4 and even then I want a regualar sized N3DS but noooo the West can't have nice things.

I was way hyped for the 3rd gen remakes until Mega evolutions were introduced and from X/Y and on it just doesn't feel like pokemon to me anymore, I wish they stuck with sprite instead of the 3d ugliness.

Pic related is best pokemon

6a0214 No.2775

Admittedly I don't have a 3DS and thus don't have XY and the remakes of Gen III, but 3D modelled Pokemon haven't looked all that bad in the past (I thought they looked fine in Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, for example). I suppose the screen size and resolution might play a role in how they look though.

>Heracross

I remember raising one of those for my Battle Frontier options in Emerald. Wasn't part of my main ones, but he sure got me through some otherwise annoying spots. Good, albeit frustrating times.

I once a week, I hack a save of Y and wondertrade like 100 shinies at random. I bet sometimes, somewhere in the world somebody gets happy about recieving a shiny Eevee, Pikachu, Honedge, Charmander, Meditite or some shit like that.

They used to be really damn rare. I got pretty lucky finding and catching a decent amount of them during gen III though. Even caught all three I found in the Safari Zone in FRLG (a Nidoran, a Rhyhorn, and Dratini) while trying to hunt Chanseys there for Lucky Eggs.

I hope for some better luck to you and anyone else yet to encounter one yet.

Different anon here. I have never gotten a shiny either, and I play Pokemon more than anyone I know. I was pretty salty when a guy I was friends with got a shiny an hour in of X/Y and then complained about not liking Pokemon anyway afterwards just to be a dick.

Thanks though man. I hope I find one too.

7e7702 No.3038

6a0214 No.3044

>>3024
If you want some advice, try to stay out of the safari zones unless you really need to go there, be it for a required/useful item or to add something new to the Pokedex, since fuckers here tend to be more than happy to flee, especially certain ones (I'm surprised that Dratini stayed as long as it took for me to catch it; they tend to flee reasonably easy, with Dragonair fleeing even more often). Having Pokemon with sleep moves and False Swipe can be useful too, though perhaps moreso in older games. I remember raising up a Breloom bred for attack and speed in Gen III with False Swipe (acquired as an egg move from a male Shroomish caught in Gale of Darkness) and Spore (has to be learned as a Shroomish and requires forgoing evolution; 100% chance of sleep when used) for catching potential shinies, as well as Mind Reader and Dynamic Punch for general usage. Not sure how well one of them would hold up for the task these days, though with Technician asa hidden ability it might be even more useful for False Swiping.

>>3038
Admittedly that's kind of true, and a lot have rather offputting alternate colors compared to their regular ones. Still, even with all the bland or bad looking ones, there's still some that have a rather nice alternate color, either due to it being one that opposes the normal one nicely (I remember thinking my blue voltorb/electrode in Sapphire was pretty cool) or just has a good alternate color scheme (The Beldum line shiny forms look particularly nice due to the mix of gold on silver). And as much as I would have preferred the nice purple and later royal purple and gold color scheme of Dratini and Dragonair, I can't say I dislike my shiny Dragonite, sewage green though it may be (interestingly enough, sometimes the shiny colors are changed when sent to a different game; my shiny Dragonite turned bright gold when sent to Colosseum from what I remember).

There simply needs to be more than one shiny form, really.

Vivillion is running in the right direction.

0baca6 No.3054

>>2765
I disagree very strongly. The 3d looks great, especially after being compared to the low res cancer that was gen V. Second, mega evolutions are very Pokemon, in fact I can't think of anything more Pokemon than that. Their idea was to somehow create powerhouses from pokemon that weren't used that much due to a bad weakness or a bad typing, or to just create something badass without reworking the entire pokemon like they had to do with Gen III, I think they succeeded. Sorry you didn't like them though.
And best pokemon is Mega Swampert, don;t you fucking forget it.
>>3046
I…That's actually a good idea, but if they do that, they'd need to increase the rates even more, because fuck, I've had 1000 hours in X/Y and still no fucking shiny except for a gulpin I found in a horde battle, which is bullshit because I've hatched thousands of eggs in comparison to how many horde battles I've had.

6a0214 No.3055

>>3046
True, but that could result in needing a lot of different code, especially if done for every one of them. I mean, Game Freak tends to use that rather sparingly already, with the 26 types of Unown and millions if not billions of possibilities for each individual Spinda's graphical variations being some exceptions, and those aren't even counting shiny variants. If anything, I suppose that with how many different Pokemon they have these days, some just wind up getting the shaft in terms of alternate colors as a way of saving time/energy for what matters more. And while it would be nice to have better alternate colors, I suppose the main purpose has always been bragging rights. Hell, used to be really hard to even get a halfway decent shiny for competitive use, between the 20 different natures, IV variance from 0 to 31 in a bunch of stats, up to two (now three) possible abilities, and the general rarity of shinies in general at that time. That said, I recall things getting better as far as breeding went as the generations went along, giving the player more control, so I'd guess breeding for a half decently usable shiny is a lot more feasible than it used to be.

>>3054
What's the current shiny encounter/hatch rate? I remember it being 1/8192 in Gen III and IV, I think. Either way it was a ridiculously low chance, and more often than not chances are it would just be some really common Pokemon you'd find. If you got REALLY lucky and unlucky at the same time, you'd find one at the beginning of the game before you even have the option to catch it. Even heard of the Pokemon shown in the intro cutscenes with the regional Professor have a chance to be shiny.

0baca6 No.3056

>>3055
Going off Masuda method, iirc it's about 1/1600/. This seems fairly high but it should be about 1/400, especially if there are multiple shiny color schemes.

6a0214 No.3060

>>3056
Well, that's better, but still rather low. Would be nice if they had a batch hatching system in, say, similar fashion to the new out-of-party purification method for Shadow Pokemon in Gale of Darkness (which was something of a nice improvement over purification in Colosseum, which could be a time consuming and/or expensive ordeal depending on a given Pokemon's preferences), but I suppose that would make things too easy. I just still remember how long it could take to even hatch five eggs with a Pokemon with Magma Armor/Flash Fire speeding things up, especially some of the ones that require a lot more steps to hatch.

Yeah, but on the bright side, you can actually breed 5IV Pokemen. This of course has a downside where everyone is using them now but it's not anywhere near a problem. My problem is RNG a shit, I've been resetting for about two weeks to get a Latias with 5IVs in AS. Fucking tits man.

I was surprised when I found a heracross in Emerald's safari zone and caught it as fast as I could and it was a great decision. I breezed through practically everything in the game from then on. When I was facing Wallace, he surfed my heracross to very low health and I reversal'd the ever living fuck out of it and holy shit Hercross has held a very special place in my heart since then.

>>3054
I really liked gen 5's look, at least in battle and I'm one of those fags that would rather have sprites full of "muh personality" than the 3d models that I find rather dull

and I agree Mega Swampert is the best mega, though something about megas just doesn't feel right to me, but that's no real reason not to include them.

6a0214 No.3064

>>3061
Yeah, trying to get one off Pokemon with the right nature, ability, and IVs is hard enough since it can be a lot harder to influence what they have as compared to breeding. I'd bet trying to factor shininess into the mix creates a living hell of the process. On that note though, I remember some years back someone on halfchan's /vp/ (back when it still had potential to be decent; haven't been there in a LONG time but I remember it turning into something of a shithole after a while) had autism enough to legitimately breed up some actually usable, 4-5 31 IV Pokemon and share them with people there via distribution. I don't even think he used those power items to carry over IVs (he was already using an Everstone to have a better chance at a preferable nature), let alone RNG tweaking the way some people started to do. Can't imagine how boring that must have been, but I bet the payoff felt great.

>>3062
Heracross' Brick Break and Megahorn helped me out a number of times in the Battle Frontier, especially the Battle Dojo or whatever it was.

>I'm one of those fags that would rather have sprites full of "muh personality" than the 3d models that I find rather dull

I don't mind well done models in games myself (especially if they fit the art style or vibe a game goes for really well), but there's always something to be set about well made and (in some cases) well animated sprites. Looking at a lot of older games (not specifically talking Pokemon here) well done sprites hold up a lot better than early 3D.

Those sorts of moves can wind up quite good on the right Pokemon, though I forget if Reversal benefits from STAB since power is based on remaining health.

I remember the Aron line benefitting from that greatly with the Endeavor variant once Sturdy prevented both absolute OHKO moves as well as regular moves from KOing in one hit (Aron itself becoming another variant of the FEAR Ratatta build). Actually one of those lines of Pokemon where both normal abilities it can have can be used with different builds, but still wind up rather effective either way if used right (Sturdy allowing for an endeavor build and Rock Head allowing for a recoilless Double-Edge/Head Smash build).

According to Bulbapedia, in recent games:
>…the probability of hatching a Shiny Pokémon through the Masuda method while using a Shiny Charm is 1/512

I've also heard people claim chaining hidden pokemon in the DexNav in ORAS increases their shiny rate. Regardless of this being true, you still get some crazy good stats just from chains. Dem hidden abilities and egg moves and perfect ivs.

6a0214 No.3073

>>3071
I recall that used to happen with DPP as far as increasing chances of shininess goes (though I recall it still taking about a chain of 40+ to really have much of an improvement; might be forgetting though as it's been a while). Wouldn't surprise me if that aspect was kept for some of the later games.

Weather is kill. Drizzle like abilities are now just an automatic rain dance, rather than permanent rain. It runs out after 5-8 turns.

Megas are ridiculous. But not that bad. You can only have one per team, and they cost an item slot on that pokemon.

Ubers is a shitshow.

Imagine they introduce a pokemon with a move that is essentially two quiver dances at once, and its typing is on par with water defensively and on par with ice or electric offensively. It's ability also gives its STAB a 1.3x boost.

That's xerneas. The deer that could, and did.

Now imagine they introduce three pokemon with 780 BST.

Two of them can't use items, so they're a little gimped in that respect. One can.

The one that can also has deo-a's offences, mew clone bulk, Dragon dance, swords dance, draco meteor and its very own special snowflake move that is a flying type close combat. Did I mention the base 115 speed. Its ability totally negates a lot of its weaknesses too, it's dragon/flying offensively, but only dragon defensively. Its ability straight up negates flying type weaknesses. Nice ice moves, fag.

Well that's mega rayquaza. It's banned from ubers. Gen one mewtwo tier broken. Smogay had to redefine ubers because of this twat.

Next up is a pokemon with a solid defensive typing, but it has one small issue of a x4 weakness to water. No problem, its ability allows it to be immune to water! Not only that, but given that its ability indirectly makes it immune to water, mold breaker doesn't wreck its shit. You need cloud nine or air lock to even hit that weakness.

That's ok, its other weakness is ground. A surefire way to be shit right? No. 100/160/90 defences, its as if it just fucking resists all physical moves. It has base 180 attack. A ground type hydro pump that is physical. Its ability is SUPER SUN and its fire type to boot. Absolutely ridiculous. It has something like 60% usage on showdown. There is no reason to not run this right now.

That's primal groudon. Btw, doesn't take the mega slot.

The last one is the above on the special side. Its SUPER RAIN grants it a hilariously redundant immunity to fire, so it isn't quite so hot as groudon there. But it still has 100/90/160 defences and 180 special attack. Its ability also cockblocks groudons one if it comes in afterwards, so that's something nice.

That's primal kyogre.

oh and I guess there's mega gengar. Ass ridiculously fast, has perish song and shadow tag. REMOVE BLISSEY remove blissey.

All in all 10/10 power creep.
