Spinoffs better than main series Anonymous 03/13/15 (Fri) 23:29:55 13a345 No. 2549
I've only played pic related, but it was really something special. Humorous, enjoyable rpg twist with pretty decent rhythm gameplay in battles depending on hand-eye coordination ability. I know there are a handful of DS games of these spinoffs that have been released as well, are all of those worth playing? Any other series where you found the spinoffs to be better?

I remember finding this game knowing absolutely nothing about it. I just saw it as another Mario platformer but was I in for a nice surprise. Easily one of my favourite games of all time, I replay it near enough every year.

All of the Mario and Luigi games are worth playing. Partners in Time isn't the best but it's still an all-around decent game. The only Paper Mario not worth playing is Sticker Star.

Super Mario RPG. If it wasn't for this I don't think Paper, or the other RPG-esque Mario games would exist. Crash Team Racing. Liked it more than the main franchise of Crash games. Fallout New Vegas > Fallout 3. Obsidian knows fallout better than Bethesda and it shows in terms of writing, game mechanics, and better setting.

The downside was how friggin difficult it was to recruit mew. Jesus Christ.
I'd have preferred it if so much content weren't gated behind the final mission. Gating evolution in particular was just ridiculous.
Also the evolved starter mon didn't have portraits, so I didn't ever evolve

Final Fantasy is a great series with some fantastic games, but the spinoffs will always be better. Especially the Mana series. I played Secret of Mana on the SNES and it didn't stand out much. I was young and didn't quite understand what I was doing or why. I got a little older and picked up Legend of Mana on a whim, and HOLY SHIT I was blown away. I've collectively spent something like a thousand hours on this game. Honorable mention; Sword of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3. Dawn of Mana was a weird Kingdom Hearts told with Mana characters/backstory that felt alien but was still worth playing. Children of Mana was a 1-dimensional copy of Secret of Mana's gameplay which is unfortunate. Couldn't play Heroes. Unfortunately I only ever played SaGa Frontier. Fantastic game with a good amount of replayability. Haven't had the pleasure of playing any of the other games in the series. Damn you, backlog Bravely Default is just amazing. Everything I could ever want in a fresh take on Final Fantasy. Excellent job system, great battle system with fun mechanics, DAT FUCKING TWIST. The story was okay but there are moments of hair-pulling frustration when the characters go full retard. Theatrhythm is an awesome mix of rhythm gaming and RPG elements. It's not too deep beyond just taking some of the best music gaming has ever had, and putting it to the standard rhythm game mechanics. For its simplicity though, it's one of the best rhythm games I've ever played. Crystal Chronicles gets a mention here but I can't give a detailed recount of my experience with it. I don't have the best of memory and honestly it's been too long since I picked up the original.

Anonymous 03/21/15 (Sat) 09:05:46 7e8364 No. 5022
>>5019 Mana started as Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. SaGa started as Final Fantasy Legend. Naming trivialities aside, they share similar game elements, made by the same studio, with a lot of the same staff working on them. Often any pretense of individuality is tossed out the window with direct references in either story or setting elements.
Fair enough, it's not "Final Fantasy: SaGa Frontier II." Maybe we just have different definitions of "spinoff."
Except for Bravely Default. It's basically Not-Final-Fantasy. I'd really like to see an explanation for Bravely Default and Final Fantasy not being related.

I hate Persona and rented this out of reaching the bottom of the barrel in my handheld backlog, but I'm having more fun with it than I did with EOU. I guess it counts as a twofer for this thread's topic. I really like all of the creatives uses of FOEs and light/darkness in the third dungeon. The tilesets and overall theming in the dungeons are great as well.

Partners in Time is the weakest of the bunch, but it's still not bad. The later games are rather hand-holdy during the puzzles, but the humour and timing-based battle system are just as good. If you haven't played the first two Paper Mario games, play those too. On-topic, I was never a big fan of the recent games in the Sonic series, but I loved Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. I'm not sure if that counts as a Sonic spin-off since it includes several Sega franchises.
