ITT: Discuss games with comfy hubs/overworlds

I liked Peach's castle in 64 and Isle Delfino in Sunshine.

If you can consider the town a hub for the dungeons, then rune factory has pretty good hubs.

370a5b No.318

The spyro games had god tier hub worlds. Hidden collectibles, great NPCs, not too big but big enough to make it feel larger than just a lone hub world. Great games.

The ones in 2 were probably the comfiest in my opinion, just feels really chilled out

I agree. Actually not sure what I liked more: the hub worlds in the first game that were usually filled with enemies as well as other things, or the tranquil hub worlds of 2 and 3 where it's just Spyro, some gems/orbs/eggs, what few friendly NPCs might be around, and your own thoughts.

Finding your way to the top of the castle at Autumn Plains and being able to see everything below was really comfy (especially since being up there adds some wind effects to the audio), and that glide from the top to that little island out in the distance being so long was great as well.

I was pretty surprised at how good spyro's gba games were.

Yeah from what I remember they were pretty decent

I don't remember much of the GBA ones besides being rather annoyed at how hard it could be to judge height and distance with an isometric view. Maybe I didn't give them enough time, I don't know. But for me, the first three on the PS1 are by far the best and the ones most worth going back and playing time and time again.

d182c0 No.339

>>334
That part was bit of an annoyance, but I never got to play the ps1 games because I was a bit late to the party, so to speak.

7e0d25 No.340

Well I certainly hope you've gotten a chance to play them by now, as they still hold up really damn well.

I have a huge backlog of old games from before I got into vidya, its on my list, plux gex, chamelion twist, bomberman adventure, etc, but I haven't gotten to them yet. Currently the game I'm focused on is tactics ogre.

>I have a huge backlog of old games from before I got into vidya
I know what you mean, and I have a huge backlog of stuff from both systems I had and didn't have access to growing up as well. Still, the PS1 Spyro games aren't horribly long (though going for 100% in 2 and 3 certainly adds more time to getting through them; 2 even has a nice reward for doing so that carries over to a new game file as well) and are very fun and cozy. I'd say at least give the first game a try sometime soon and decide from there whether you want to jump right into 2 and 3 or hold off on them for the time being.

This count?

Anyways I hope the base in MGSV is comfy as fuck and that Kojima can follow through on the promises.

transistor had a pretty comfy hub, just because the rest of the game is so mysterious, also i liked sanctuary in borderlands 2

No anon, it doesn't count. But mega man legends had a great hub.

Final Fantasy XII, big open areas yet not exactly an open world.

Megaman ZX

The Witcher 1&2

Worlds that are connected to everything have to be my favorite, like Gauntlet Legends and Diddy Kong Racing. Have hubworlds died with the introduction of of the open world and mission format, or are they still around?

Falcom makes some real nice towns.

Redmont, Harlech, Minea, whatever the mining town of gurumin is called.

Demon Souls did an already job with a hub world for a newer game. Otherwise I can't think much of one. I loved DKR's hub world. It felt like it was more than just a hub, since there were a few fun things you could do, a few collectables there to get.

14ca3d No.2264

Xenogears by far, platforming adds quite a bit to a good rpg town.

These. I haven't played Demons Souls but I have played Gauntlet Dark Legacy. I love the hub worlds that actually incorporate game elements into them like hidden secrets or some enemies to fight in addition to being a connection to the levels.

370a5b No.2345

Crash Team Racing had a pretty comfy hub world for you to practice your driving in, it provided a safe environment with no risk for you to try out the limits of the mechanics. Something most games should do for players otherwise how are you going to know the limits of the game if you run the risk of being punished for trying to experiment in a crucial scenario?

370a5b No.5678

Demon's Souls had a great hub world. Just playing it again, and I realized I like it a lot more than Majula or Firelink except for some of the redundant level design in it when getting to the top.

fae4f5 No.5700

Isle Delfino is m favourite hub world. Not so big that it becomes a chore to traverse. Not so small that it feels pointless. Challenges hidden throughout, making it it's own level in a way. Lots of things to play around with just for fun. Catchy music.

Banjo Kazooie would be my favorite. Great soundtrack and it's just fun to aimlessly run around the overworld. Second place would be Diddy Kong Racing for the same reasons.

I'd fucking hope so, since DS2 has precisely zero level continuity and flows like shit.

I'm really looking forward to the new Zelda overworld. Hopefully they get rid of cutting random tall grass for hearts with eating fruits you find in random trees and bushes. I think it could make the overworld feel a little more alive. Hopefully we'll get a more in depth gameplay video later, Im not going to take big N's word at face value.

Gauntlet Dark Legacy had such an interesting little hub that they almost should have just made a real level out of it.

On the topic of SM64. Is it worth buying on the WiiU eStore or should I just pirate it seeing as it's so old?

1424f7 No.16362

>>16360

Do what your heart tells you, anon.

If you're up for it, I can recommend the DS version. Has sharper graphics and a lot more content.

3ea9fa No.16364

>>16360

H-have you never actually played SM64?

I don't mean it in a sarcastic way but as a legitimate question. I've sorta assumed practically everyone on here has at least played it a bit, either on the N64 itself or via emulation since it's one of the few on N64 that emulates just fine.

db396a No.16365

>>16362

Don't own a DS, or any sort of handheld. Gaming is for when I'm home.

>>16364

Never played it. The WiiU is the first ninty console I have owned. Back when I was a child whenever I played on an N64 it was multiplayer games at a friend's house. I never bothered emulating because I didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a controller to work with my PC.

3ea9fa No.16366

>>16365

DS is still easy to emulate and considering the game is D-pad based it wouldn't be hard to use PC controls for it.

Still, if you don't wish to emulate at all then the Wii U one is your best bet.

9fd396 No.16368

>>16366

I absolutely endorse emulating all gameboy games you want on PC now but for DS games, I think you should buy a DS to get the best experience with them. Many games like Spectrobes really just work better on the DS for the feel of control due to the systems the DS has like touch screen/microphone which are imperfectly emulated on PC.

8fbfbf No.16369

>>16368

>microphone

One of the emulators can do that one. I assume there's a button that lets out a blow/noise for the annoying uses like the the two Zelda games.

I know one can mimick the 'closing the DS' which is needed in at least three games.

I don't emulate the DS - it's easy enough to pirate on anyway.

Should hubs be a part of the game with included gameplay elements or just glorified level entrance galleries?

For example I like the Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 hubs but it feels sort of like they didn't reach their true potential.

38fa76 No.16374

>>16369

I have DesMume. Granted, I haven't explored all of its options, but I didn't know the emulators got the microphone yet.

You would need an actual microphone emulator for something like spectrobes though where you need to blow at a specific speed to awaken a fossil.

3ea9fa No.16577

>>16368

To be honest, for SM64 DS the touch screen is hardly used and is more for a map then anything. It is used in the minigames but in the main game it isnt used.

Though to add onto what I was saying before: Thinking about it, one should probably play it on the N64 first before the DS version. The DS version makes sooo many changes that you'll probably appreciate them more due to comparing them to the original.

I always felt comfy in the Rogue Encampment in Diablo 2, dunno why, it just felt safe and even when I unlocked new towns I found myself going back there because it felt like home.

I honestly think that Pokemon DPPT and BW have the best overworlds in terms of "comfy-ness"

They both have fantastic soundtracks with really interesting visual styles to each. Diamond and Pearl's interpretation of the Japanese Sinnoh region is really interesting and comfy. Snowy weather with large mountains and rural areas is really comfy. Unova is obviously supposed to be the United States with the cities and small towns everywhere.

The music to these 2 generations is also really amazing. It's hard to understand how anyone could honestly think that Gen 1 or 2 are better than Gen 4 and 5.
