I liked it in the old days when vidya had a lot of furry characters.

>Furry
I don't think that's the word you're looking for but I do miss the days when those kinds of characters weren't immediately linked with degenerates and autists.

I personally prefer anthro characters that take more direct inspiration from early-to-mid 20th century animation, since the main characters of Sly Cooper, An Elysian Tale, Freedom Planet, etc. have really off-putting color palettes and faces, even ignoring the possible inspiration.

Spyro was a badass motherfucking dragon. Not a furry.

Furry wasn't necessarily a standard, it was more like developers thought making that kind of character (anthropomorphic animals) would be more in touch with their target audience (kids), not because they wanted to appeal to strange fetishes. You can tell in furry art there is a more animal look to their characters while in the retro MCs we have a tendency to look more human than animal.

Then it was cool to be some ex army member and we got a lot of those.

Nowadays the kids want edgy teenagers as MC and we are getting that.

f35965 No.6215

The association of any animal character with furries is why we don't have so many of them now.

127e1f No.6217

I don't particularly care for anthropomorphized animals, but I do regret that I can't see one without feeling some reluctance or disgust.

529960 No.6230

I do too OP, it's a shame they don't get made without getting hit with the misunderstanding of tending to furries. It's made creativity more narrow and it shows greatly in that regard. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Gex >>4387 (muh nigga) were great games for their time. The only time when it's allowed is the same way why TES and other games don't get called out for it, that is when when the animal/beast races aren't the focus.

I'd chalk those up to the parent companies abusing those franchises.

Spergs like CWC and DeviantArt users probably had a greater effect on Sonic than furries ever did.

I'll give you Star Fox though, fuck Krystal fans and fuck togepi1125

This. These designs used to be cool and / or cute, but they're just too badly tainted now to ever be popular in the same way again.

87b00c No.6804

At the time, there was no stigma against it.
You could have some cute critter or silly bear with a backpack, and it'd be a novel idea for a game.
>A hedgehog that RUNS?
>A bear that uses a bird to help it fly and shoot things?
>A fox that cuts off its own legs and fights intergalactic wars?
But now, what hasn't been done?
And more importantly, what CAN be done without assholes taking every innocent and sweet-hearted character under the sun and making boatloads of porn about said character?

It sucks.
The sex-starved culture that makes up a large portion of the internet can ruin just about anything if they set their mind to it.

I miss the old days when video games had colorful stylized characters, whether they were specifically human or cartoon animals or what didn't make a lot of difference. I already live in real life every single day, I'd prefer to see something else in my video games.

I'm sad that back then we had the designs and styles I liked, now we have the way more powerful graphics, but we can't have both at once. I mean, the old Secret of Mana style colorful world and characters on today's hardware? Made every bit as big and ambitious by today's standards as SoM was for its time? I'd finally be HYPED for a game again.

6b66d5 No.15033

I also liked it when I could just play a light hearted game where the characters were novelties that merely decorated good gameplay instead of a grimdark story about a gruff looking guy's struggles with finding something to wear other than a hooded trenchcoat or a suit of futuristic looking armor

>>6804

There's no stigma to it today. You fucking faggots need to leave your somethingawful memes behind and realize that nobody in real life gives a flying fuck about furfags. They're that episode of CSI and a doctor phil special about a guy in a paper dog costume, dawg. Furfags are lonely losers that can't get any easy attention outside of the internet, just like anime fags.

It's something more positive: gamers want to play games with people and edgy monsters, that's it, and the marketers know it. People are easy to project onto and monsters are pleasing to kill. Edgy cuts wallets open easier than fluffy.

And the funniest part? The current situation generates more porn because more people are sexually attracted to regular old humans, and more depraved porn because holy fuck monster porn is a big no compared to furfag.

I think part of the problem is that people who like anything that can be deemed furry is lumped together with people who actually think they are foxes and wolves. You're not gonna put the effort into making something look good unless you like the aesthetic of it, but liking the look of zoomorph or highly anthropomorph characters just doesn't fly anymore.

We still see quite a bit of slight anthropomorphism though in the form of animals who talk and think like people, maybe even walking on two legs, and as it happens it's not something that has really had a stigma associated with it. Well at least it didn't before ponies happened, we'll just have to see how it developed.

boom, nailed it.

Only us Internet weirdos care about teh furriez/acknowledge them.

Everyone else just sees anthropomorphic animal characters.

Identifying errything as furry says more about the person than the subject.

I will create anthropomorphic animal characters for reasons of style and when the Internet inevitably makes porn of these characters, the only sane response is not to give a fuck, because it makes porn of everything.

Remember Tail Concerto? I loved running around as a canine in a police mech, catching kitten pirates with bubbles.

Old cartoon-animal games were gloriously silly.
