/svidya/ is a strict /v/ alternative for moderated vidya discussion. This Board wasn't intended to replace /v/ but to aid Anon's in having vidya discussions with zero shitposters. Thanks for adding /svidya/ to /v/'s recommended boards, Mark.

Once did a thread like this on /v/. Wanna see if there are edgemasters that /svidya/ thinks are actually well-written and/or likeable.

Doesn't being edgy by definition mean the character is poorly written?

I disagree. If the character starts off edgy, but then has some character development - then I'd say that the character is well-written.

Not that BlazBlue is well-written. Pic related.

Not at all. Edgy is simply party aesthetic (red, black, white palette, spiky hair, that shit) combined with certain personality traits (brooding, angry, swears a lot). Now, if a character ONLY has edge going for them, they will inherently be a shitty character. But edge doesn't have to be bad, it can even be good, so long as there is something else to them.

Take Ragna for instance. When he starts out, he's an angry, impulsive, foul-mouthed, serial killing asswipe with a tragic backstory out for revenge. Incredibly cliche. But as the story goes on, you see he's not a bad person. When the world isn't trying to screw him over, he's a kind if a bit gruff guy who likes cooking and cute, fuzzy animals. On top of that, as the story goes on, he develops into a far more mature, wise person. I'd go as far as to say the contrast between this part of his character and the whole "edgy" thing actually serves to make him a lot better.

Ragna and a few other characters are good. Can't defend it's writing as a whole, though.

What you're looking for is Grimdark, maybe?

>Roll: Knowledge - /tg/

Grimdark - Life at the montain is tough, but it provides enough for our family and our clan.

Edgy - My sword has been folded 9000 times, no one shall stand on my path.

I'd actually disagree that Ragna was well-written in Chronophantasma. He does get some character development, but a lot of that development depends on Celica A. Marysue. It especially annoyed me that all the interplay between Ragna and Noel was just dropped in favor of Celica.

>>5119

No, not Grimdark; Ragna is definitely an edgy bastard, he just ends up getting some substance.

Grimdark is more like Warhammer and stuff in that vein.

I see your point. Celica was shit, and the fact that Ragna has to develop through her kind of sucks not to mention the ending kind of making it pointless. I'm not really into clone incest, so NoelxRagna being dropped wasn't too hard on me.
I still like him regardless.

And yeah, what this guy said. Nothing wrong with edge so long as there's substance beneath it.

Now let's get back on topic.

When people say a character is "edgy", that usually implies that edginess is all the character has going for them, see DONTE. Generally, a good character can be edgy but that's not what defines them.

Doesn't this perfectly describe Neku from TWEWY?

How about Travis Touchdown? He sort of talks like an edgy person but it's still quite clear that he's just a dorky otaku.

His story was really well written. It make me like the character and feel empathy for him.
This is how a character should be write.

I strongly disliked Travis by the end of the game. He's a wholly awful person with no likable traits at all.
The otaku stuff, like an offhand remark about moe, feels misplaced and does not fit his character at all.
It feels like he was made into an otaku character somewhere late in game developement to make a character seem likable that is a class A cunt.
