I never really played them before, but somehow after seeing the art in pic related, I have a strong urge to play a RPG with pixel graphics.

Any suggestions /svidiya/?

If you haven't played Chrono Trigger, you need to do so NOW.

I have certainly heard of it.

I'm making a list to play through now.

a20e8e No.5275

>>5269
Actually, which version of Chrono Trigger do you recommend?

0e8530 No.5287

>>5275
DS version has the animu cutsecenes from the PS version and also some extra dungeos

a20e8e No.5294

>>5287
OK I'll get that version then, thanks anon!

0e8530 No.5296

I really like Legend of Mana, Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tatics

PSX version has gigantic load time, DS version has a shit re-translation that totally kills the feel of the game.

SNES version is GOAT.

a20e8e No.5314

>>5296
Since I have a PSP I am going to download Tactics Ogre now.

I wonder whether anyone has done a PSX to PSP thing with Legend of Mana and Final Fantasy Tactics. I'll report back.

a20e8e No.5315

>>5313
That is a shame, since the extra dungeons part was interesting me.

PSP version of FFT is shit. Spell animations literally play at half speed which makes mid-lategame battles excruciatingly long, and the aspect ratio is totally fucked since they just stretched the normal 4:3 image to fake widescreen resulting in everything looking squished. Also the voice acting is awful.

>>5315
They don't add anything interesting to the game. Just emulate the SNES version and you're in for a crazy ride.

Roger that.
>Spell animations literally play at half speed which makes mid-lategame battles excruciatingly long
>aspect ratio is totally fucked since they just stretched the normal 4:3 image to fake widescreen

This type of information is a big part of why I came to you awesome guys for suggestions.

I'm downloading the SNES version now.

4bd92a No.5337

I'm probably going to get called a pleb for this but you can't really go wrong with Final Fantasy IV, V and VI

The Tales series has both 2D sprited and 3D modeled entries in it if you want to give some of the spirted ones a try. Unfortunately, if you don't know Japanese, you're going to be kind of limited to the first three games, Tales of Phantasia (SNES, remake on the PS1; fan translation for both), Tales of Destiny, and Tales of Eternia (Tales of Destiny II in the US). The west never saw localizations of Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Rebirth, Tales of Destiny Director's Cut, or Tales of Hearts DS.

Still, the ones we have access to are pretty good, and going in order of release (Phantasia SNES, Destiny, Phantasia PS1, Eternia; Phantasia PS1 generally holds up better than the SNES version and has better fan translations too) get more fluid and faster paced. Give them a try if you want to try a JRPG with 2D sprited, real time combat.

There's a lot of debate over which is better: The SNES original or the DS port. Some people prefer the DS port's more accurate translation, while other feel that it kills some of the charm of the game. Really just depends on the player in question and what they prefer. Personally I like accuracy, but that's just me. Either way, the SNES and DS version are the go-to versions, since the Playstation version has rather annoying load time, and I don't recall hearing much good about the phone ports they've done.

I assume you're okay with action and strategy rpgs, in addition to normal turn based games.
I recommend:
Dragon Quest 5
Phantasy Star 4
Shining force 1 and 2
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's inside story
Golden Sun
Mother 3
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (there are others on gba and ps1 but this is my favorite)
Monster World 4

hesitant recommendations:
Radiant Historia (great gameplay, but the story may not be your cup of tea. I certainly didn't enjoy it. Luckily you can skip cutscenes if you like)

Phantasy Star 1 and 2 (good games, but haven't aged as well as 4. Random battles can get annoying, and 2 has very repetetive environments. 1 has a problem where you're not sure what location you're in sometimes and both have a grinding problem)

The other mario and luigi games (the gameplay is still just as good as the other two, but the stories aren't as entertaining and later games can get too tutorial heavy sometimes)

The world ends with you(fun game. It's just a bit too cutscene heavy and the story is a tad bit cliche, which is the only reason I'm putting it in the hesitant to recommend list.)

Sands of Destruction (again fun gameplay, mediocre story. Random battles can be annoying sometimes.)

From this list, I'd say start with superstar saga. This was the first rpg game that I played and Liked.

I don't know much Japanese unfortunately, I will try these out too.

I'll see both versions then, and decide which Chrono Trigger version to play.

>>5606
Thanks for the recommendations! I'll start with Superstar Saga as you recommend.

I am a pretty noob at this type of strategy game but from a few hours of gameplay I get the impression that Tactics Ogre is something special. I don't completely get the system yet, but I am learning, and have really enjoyed it so far. The difficulty is fairly high, and death is a serious affair, you actually need to think things out a fair bit.

The music is really well designed, I especially like the commentary in the unlocked sounds area, where the people who made the soundtracks talk about the soundtrack.

The way you can change your view of scenes is also something remarkable and well executed, I was surprised!

I discovered the screen shot function by accident, I will probably use it a fair bit.

>>5647
I am going with the SNES version of Chrono Trigger for now, I can play it on my PSP which is really nice, and a big factor in my decision in this, seeing as the DS version would have to be played through DraStic on my phone.

>>5337
I have to get around to playing these games sometime.

>>5606
I love Superstar Saga already. It is on my PSP now. I'm going to finish Tactics Ogre before I continue down your list though.

Incidentally, I have played Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. I got all the souls and the chaos ring too (getting sky fish, and that Demon Lord in the Chaos realms souls was a bitch!).

TWEWY's story is far from cliche if you saw it through to the secret reports. Besides that, the game has a lot of charm. The localization team outdid themselves.

I'm seconding Mother 3 as well because it's a lovely game and the sprite work is wonderful.

a71477 No.6318

Terranigma (SNES)
Suikoden 2 (PS1)
Xenogears (PS1)
Seiken Densetsu 3 "secret of mana 2" (SNES)
Breath of Fire 3 & 4 (PS1)

these are my recomendations of you OP.

OP, try Lone Survivor.
I recommend the directors cut version.

Try the Exile trilogy OP, it's wonderful.

Take note that TWEWY's dialogue is actually good. Yeah, there's a lot of it, but it's worth reading.

I think the game only falls down on its plotline and long-term pacing. Things really slow down in the last quarter or so of the game, almost as if the writers were rushed to meet some sort of deadline.
