I just noticed how far up /svidya/ was on the topbar, you're practically within striking distance of the top ten. Even now, there is hope for man.

Since /v/ is too retarded to talk about the actual game and just keeps going on about:
>muh pee poo
>muh squid lolis
>muh hat simulator

What do you think about Splatoon, /svidya/? I think that the base concept is the best thing to happen to shooters in a long time, but I don't feel comfortable buying a Wii U and everything for it considering all the shady shit Nintendo's been doing recently.

Pic semi-related, as it sadly reflects the current state of /v/ all too well.

57b0e0 No.5723

I think it looks like a cool game. Something I'll consider when/if I purchase a WiiU since it's getting a decent sizable library as compared to the current gen consoles.

>shady shit Nintendo's been doing recently.

???

Also meta thread is stickied if you wanna discuss the state of /v/ or /svidya/'s success.

I think we will have a new nintendo console within 2 years, I will buy that if it has backwards compatibility.
As for Splatoon I can see it being pic related. The new mechanics will allow for very complex tactics and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up full of ARMA clans.

Since this is /svidya/ I'll assume I can actually reply to these and it won't turn into a console war thread or something.

>still using region lock

Iwata said they were thinking of getting rid of it in the future. Likely NX will be region-free whenever that comes out.
>lobbying for more freedom-crushing "anti-piracy" regulation in the US Congress
Their a business. So are Sony and Microsoft. They really only want more money and piracy gets in the way of that. I can't fault a company for pursuing what it's lifeblood is, even when I pirate heavily myself. But I don't attempt to justify any piracy I commit. Besides, Washington crushes freedom more than Nintendo lobbying does on a weekly basis.

>using amiibo figures as physical DLC

They aren't DLC. They've never been sold as that. They're cheap toy-figurines that they threw some code in. STEAM isn't a game with features locked behind an amiibo DLC wall. I have STEAM and I don't have any FE amiibos, and outside of one mention of amiibo squadmates, that's all there is. You're neither encouraged or discouraged from going out to buy them. DLC wall implies that the developer actually wants you to go out and buy that DLC, and in this case it just feels like IS is throwing in some fanservice for people that bought them anyway.

>dabbling in Candy Crush-style jewry with Pokemon Shuffle

Which was completely free and only casuals play anyway. This doesn't affect anything else. Since they're going after mobile market, expect more stuff like this made to milk casuals dry. Again, this goes back to Nintendo just wanting money.

>underproducing high-demand products seemingly intentionally, so that scalpers buy up the entire stock and in the case of games everyone is forced to go to the eShop to """"""buy""""" a digital copy

This is just conjecture. And you know that by your use of 'seemingly'. You don't know that, and scalpers are a separate problem. In this case I think Nintendo is just incompetent rather than malicious. They get nothing from scalper sales outside of the feeling for hardcore fans that they have to jump on any amiibos as soon as they're available, which I doubt increases sales overall all that much. It's claimed a lot on /v/, but I'd have to see some actual proof of it.

>this is kind of a minor one but I'm still salty about spiderhax getting patched so that regionthree doesn't work

And that one I don't even know, but hacks being patched is the nature of the game. See my previous points.

You're making up reasons to hate Nintendo that other companies get away with. Otherwise, I just reiterate that Nintendo isn't a perfect company anyway, and all they really want is just money like any other company.

Now onto the actual thread topic: I'm pretty interested in Splatoon. Hopefully we'll get a release date soon. I also hope we have /v/eekend threads like we did for MK8 and Smash.

2cb208 No.5776

I'm cautiously optimistic. The last real "shooter" that I played was Strike Vector for a few weeks on my gaming rig, and that was an utter blast. I wish it wasn't dead.

As for Splatoon; I'm somewhat worried about balance. I'd call the unlock system a trend in modern shooters, but it's more of a norm nowadays. Part of the reason I dislike those systems is that the last real third-person shooter that I played on console was Uncharted 3's multiplayer - and the unlock system on that one made balance utterly horrible. I vastly preferred 2's multiplayer since unlocks, besides a few key exceptions, weren't over-powered and everyone started out with the same weapon. Same reason that I liked Halo 3 over Reach or 4.

I think the best way to deal with balance issues while still allowing people to use the unlock system if they'd like to would have to be adopting the PvZ:GW strategy. I played a little bit of the game on my PS4 since I got it for free and I was really surprised how not-horrible it was for an EA game - especially how balanced it was. If Nintendo took cues from that title, I think Splatoon would definitely benefit.

As for the other mechanics - I'm LOVING the movement options. Part of why I loved both Titanfall (before the PC port fell apart on my computer. Damn microstuttering.) and Strike Vector was because both of those games allowed for a lot of movement. Splatoon is the same with how you can dive into the ink, and rocket yourself across the map - and although a lot of AAA shooters are incorporating movement nowadays (and good on them!) I can't wait to see what sort of things you'll be able to coordinate in Splatoon. Makes me wish it was easy to stream Wii U titles so I could watch people rekt shit online.

For what it's worth level design looks very good for both the singleplayer and multiplayer maps, and I'm actually pretty interested in how the singleplayer is gonna be platforming heavy. It's been a long time since a predominantly multiplayer shooter has had a good "campaign" - so I'm wondering if Nintendo can pull it off on their first shot. I'm also interested in how much the singleplayer and the multiplayer are going to overlap - will you unlock multiplayer items for doing campaign levels? Will you be able to use currency from the campaign to at least purchase items for the multiplayer? Now that I think about it, if they balanced it so that completing the campaign would give you most of the unlocks one way or another, that would probably override balance issues on its own…

e3eb89 No.5871

What I'm looking forward the most in Splatoon is the single player, they've shown some crazy level design that coupled with the squid movent options seems really fun.

Multiplayer could be great too but they've only showed one game mod and three maps or so, so it's hard to judge, as of right now I'm more excited about Devil's Third's multiplayer.

About the WiiU I already have one and enjoy it greatly but it's all dependant on the person's taste for videogames.

Prolly what attracts me most to Splatoon is the colors. I'm so tired of the stereotypical shooter color pallet. Also I'm tired of every shooter trying to be this be all end up serious competitive shooter experience. Splatoon just looks down right fun and easy going.

the objective of painting the map should prove really interesting as it would encourage a lot of movement.
i wouldnt discredit the squid lolis either, they are eye catching and i may have otherwise ignored whats sure to be a great game, and the hat simulator aspect might keep the player base from becoming disinterested too fast.

It's always been mine when I try to tell someone why I love my Wii U. Backwards compatibility is a huge deal for me with consoles. It's the main reason I never bought a PS4, and still have no plans to, and instead went with Wii U since it had the strongest (and only) BC capabilities of the new consoles. If you don't softmodd the vWii channel, then you're just not using the console to it's fullest potential.

I'm not much of a marketer, but I'll explain why I like it anyway.

Watch some gameplay videos of it. Watch a developer interview. This is an upcoming team at Nintendo, and they're trying something new beyond just having a new IP. The shifts between squid and inkling looks smooth as fuck. On top of that, it turns traditional online multiplayer on it's head by getting rid of K/D ratio and instead making ground covering the most important thing. It's a cool new take on the rooty tooty shoot 'em booty genre.

Plus a lot of people just like it for the porn of the Inklings it produces.

5b361d No.16144

>>16143

>it turns traditional online multiplayer on it's head by getting rid of K/D ratio

>and instead making ground covering the most important thing.

Which is really just the Domination game mode, where K/D ratio also doesn't matter but is still there in conventional MP shooters, but over the whole map.

Ask yourself: If this game wasn't on Wii U and didn't feature squid lolis, would you still buy it? And more importantly: Would you actually invest time in the MP and not just for the first month or so after the game's release?

2ebb56 No.16147

>>16144

I honestly wouldn't, but not for those reasons. I just don't like arena shooters. I like my Wii U, but not enough to buy games for it just because they're on that platform. And I don't just fap to squid lolis and shotas every day, so I'm not obessed with that.

I'm having trouble precisely describing why it's appealing to me. Maybe it's the light hearted approach to a genre that's saturated in brown and gunsteel grey. I think that, and the different types of weapons available, are appealing to me. It's casual-friendly shooter, which is just fine for me. I've had fun when I do play online in shooters, which is rare and I don't think I've done it since Killzone 3, so that is appealing to me too. I don't have to worry about people thinking I suck pure ass because I'm having trouble getting noscope headshots on guys. Just focusing on painting the area is a viable route for me, I could also just kill other players and get ink explosions too. It doesn't really alienate either. I've never been a person that just sits down and plays MP all night, or all weekend. I peck at it over time. A round there, maybe two hours another night. So having a game with longer lifespan is important for me. I'll play well after the first month. If it gets bad, I'll just go to halfchan for /v/eekend threads for it.

Anything else, I'm not sure about. It's just managed to catch my interest, and like I said, I normally pass these types of games.

dc600e No.16155

Splatoon would interest me if it didn't look like Wii shovelware. And given the current state of the WiiU/Nintendo I expect the multiplayer (aka the core of the game) to be dead within a few months after release. Also it looks derivative of De Blob which was a much better game (if not one of the best for the Wii). I'm not paying more than $20 for it. It'll be a cult classic though, just like Codename: STEAM.

And for as much shit Nintendo (rightfully) has gotten recently, Splatoon is a step in the right direction even if it's just a mediocre game. They need to start experimenting and making new IPs again or they'll just end up like Sega churning out Mario every year to keep the lights on.

Not live, but I caught it after the fact. Very good Direct, and purple squid idol a best.

Lots of gameplay and information, and they were very honest about how the multiplayer is going to work. Not thrilled about how the abilities of your gear are randomized, but if you can adjust them using that Spike guy then I guess it's fine. I just worry that you won't be able to manually adjust them, since they said you can use him to "reroll" abilities on gear. If that's the case and you can't adjust what you exactly want on a piece of gear, then I think it'll negatively impact the staying power of the multiplayer by inducing a grind for the stats you want.

The base gameplay still looks amazing, though. I hope this game sells well and encourages Nintendo to invest in more original IP, since their studios are clearly capable of doing amazing things when they're given the opportunities.

Hope the netcode is good, too. Sm4sh, despite being leagues faster than Brawl ever was, is still unplayable without an ethernet adapter.

There's been lots of complaints about the direct and the game in terms of content and other things like gamepad control, voice chat, and visuals. I'm actually happy that we're getting the content at a later date. Something tells me this date was a major deadline for the devs and they had to make the decision to finish the game and update it at a later point; which makes sense.

Gamepad control was always and issue for me, but it makes sense for several reasons. The map transportation and minimap are going to be major assets to competitive gameplay, it only makes sense they'd force you to use the controller that's practically created with the game.

No voice chat is a legitimate complaint and it's annoying knowing that we don't get any. It make sense since this is a game geared at children and young teens, but it's not like they'll actually spend the time to get into ranked matches. I can see matches being a pain without the ability to communicate with other players.

2ebb56 No.16386

>>16363

Maybe I'm on the outs, because I never liked voice chat and actively mute everyone when I use it. Most of the time it's not used for anything worthwhile in the game. Yeah, there is the strategy aspect of it, but I've very rarely seen that happen in random groups. If you want to group with with friends, you can easily work around it by using various other voice chat programs alongside Splatoon.

8cc97b No.16405

Just played Splatoon for under an hour.

I'm pretty impressed, the motion control was far more intuitive than I imagined and allowed for better precision and snap aiming than the right stick alone.

Lack of communication options were sort of a bummer. When the only options are "on me" and "nice" you cannot really communicate at all.

Actual gameplay was interesting, but I fear the beginning of each match will get repetitive given that the first 30 or so seconds is just filling up on blank space. On that note there's a lot of time in each match where it's pretty passive/you're just cleaning up after the opponent without much direct conflict. The King of the Hill mode should fix this.

Weapons were all fun in their own right, I ended up using the ink roller the most for its 1hitKO potential. The Sniper rifle was very difficult to use but quite powerful. Most people stopped using them during the second half of the quick demo. The Machine guns were good balanced weapons and I can see them being used a lot in competitive play.

I didn't find special weapons and grenades were used too often, but I'd put that down to general inexperience rather than the special weapons being bad.

Movement options took a while to get used to, and apart from stealth I didn't see people pulling off anything amazing yet.

I don't quite see myself buying the game on launch, but depending on how it turns out I may buy it a little later on in its life.

I had a lot of fun in that hour but I don't know if it was $60 worth of fun. Maybe if I watched the Direct from a few days ago it would change my mind but as of now I feel like $60 is too much. Even if it were though I'm sadly not able to pay that much right now. Since it's a Nintendo product it won't get a significant price drop so I've given up hope.

I didn't really care for the motion controls, but I'm hearing that they can be switched off and it's smooth without them also. I'll try that tomorrow morning if I can.

Lack of communication I can see messing with the team a little ,but I found myself thinking more independently of my team, and that often helped. Without some guy trying to order everyone around, I felt free to go do my own thing, paint down hallways that the other team didn't think of, because they were busy getting stuck in with the rest of my team in a bottleneck. It can really pay off otherwise. And the gameplay is so fast and hectic, the matches are short, that I don't see much of an advantage from having in depth tactics that a team would use. Then again, I'm biased because I never liked voice chat.

Beginning of the match is a bit repetetive, but I found it could be changed up by hanging back and watching what your teammates do. Once I moved off the roller, I'd just swim in the ink the rollers laid down before we all split up . Really enjoyed the smoothness of going in and out of squid form. I had one match where I popped in and out of it while popping enemy players. The jump in squid form is really helpful to move around and get some air on your shots, which gives you a good boost to ground coverage.

Special weapons, I only used a few. Killer Wail is nice, but I wish it had some paint with it. Still it's great that it can go through walls. I also found I could use it defensively. Set it down where enemies are coming, knowing they'll get out of the way, but that buys me time to cover the ground. The Bubbler is also great, I'm not wild about the grenade spam weapon though.

Much more fun than I expected. Between this and the customization aspect, and other modes, I can see me playing 60 hours worth. That'd make it worth the price of admission, easy.

d3205f No.16408

I haven't had this much fun in ages, day one urchase for me.

What's your favorite weapon?

I really liked Roller for the shotgun-like spray it had as well as the sniper rifle because of the long lines of paint it produced allowing me to get to where I needed to go fast. Also, rapid firing it allowed to cover some more ground and close ranges.

I started leaving the early spreading to everyone else and just squidding ahead by shooting a bit in front of me and jumping to the puddles. Basically, puddle hopping, so I can get ahead and try and kill some of the team.

I just left a lot of the covering of the walls to the rollers and tried to protect them and kill whoever I could.

Today was just sort of a dive in, get a taste of everything thing. There's a lot of room in this game, from what I noticed playing, for a lot of strategy.

I started doing things like hiding in the walls when I see a roller coming, since they can't really get you. Then jump out and start spray and pray and kill them from a distance.

It feels to me like once people start spending some time with this game they're going to start coming up with better ways to play and more advanced strategies than just running around with a roller covering the map and killing anyone who comes near them. Don't forget that they're going to have that hardcore ranked mode too. I can see that being a lot of fun, specially with the right people.

Motion controls took some time to get used to but overall they were great. Way better than just using sticks. I think that going back to regular shooters on consoles with just sticks is going to be hard, but I wish the stick worked on the y axis with motion controls enabled.

There's a lot of room for strategy in this game, I think, specially reading the other posts. And it seems simple enough that DSP-types can pick it up and have fun. Nintendo did a really good job with this, I'm going to have to go to gamestop and pre-order it, maybe get the amiibo too, even if the Smash costume looks pretty derpy.

Roller is great, but I started relying on it too much because of how powerful it can be sometimes. I could see that being the casual weapon of choice due to it's user friendly nature. Splattershot Jr really grew on me. Great special, great for taking out other inklings up close, a lot of spread. Splattershot has more range, but the slower rate of fire hurts it for me.

Next time I play I'm going to try charger on a high area. I was too in the middle of things with it before.

STOP

USING

ROLLERS

I SWEAR. NEXT SESSION YOU LOSERS BETTER START USING INTUITIVE WEAPONS OR LEAR TO USE THE DAMN ROLLER.

IT'S NOT AN INVINCIBILITY WEAPON. IT'S A WEAPON MADE FOR FLANKING AND BACK-DOORING. DON'T RUN INTO THE FRONT LINES EXPECTING TO COME OUT AS SOME 10-0 HERO.

HOLY CRAP.

Real talk, the game is tons of fun with some really good balancing when the opposing teams are on the same level of skill. The music is fun an exhilarating, the visual style is awesome while the visuals are subpar + 60fps, and the gameplay is incredibly fun. The only issue I have with the game at this point is the content, which, although will be patched in, is honestly lacking. Starting the game with only 5 maps and a 2 game modes leaves a lot to desire from a game with such amazing gameplay. The $60 price tag, is a bit overwhelming, but if you're a fan of the game and look forward to playing it for a long time then it's something easy to shrug off.

I give the game a Pretty good with some lost potential/10

>mfw finished the hour with a match in the same team as a Treehouse employee

Splattershot might be my favorite. Roller is great, but can be easy to use. I suck at charger. I think some anons might be right and you really need gyro for that one.

a83f50 No.16450

Anyone know what kind of options the game will have for online at release? It won't be completely random like the demo, will it?

519086 No.16451

After messing around with all the other weapons i gotta say my favorite is the roller it lets me cover the most ground in the lest amount of time and i just love how much more tactically you have to play to fight ranged foes. The JR is second fav tho it just mows sluts down without hesitation.

f15dea No.16467

I can totally see the younger generation really get into this since it's just TF2 with some substantial changes not to mention said younger people will more than likely buy amiibos for the game and then have a reason to stick to the game even longer due to the fact that they sunk some additional money for it. Gameplay wise it's actually pretty fun but if you have played a shooter before it will all feel old hat to you. The concept of coloring shit ala Da Blob is fun as fuck as well but personally I don't see me picking it up as soon as it comes out. I want to see the general reaction to this since if the multiplayer falls flat on it's face then it could seriously hurt the game.

a8df1b No.16490

ALRIGHT FUCKERS DID YOU ALL ENJOY THE SERVER STRESS TEST, CAUSE I SURE AS FUCK DID

Seriosly, though. Fucking love this game, definitely picking it up on launch day. I don't care if I have to use Skype to play with you guys and chat, I'll make it work.

Pros:

Great aesthetics. Colour everywhere, proper use of textures to guide players' eyes. Inklings are adorable and the squeaks they make when they explode and activate super powers are adorable as well.

Map design seemed tight. Not a fan of Saltspray Rig since it felt cluttered with all the up-and-down environments and the death pits, but Walleye Warehouse was slick.

The mobility is also really important. Using the squid transformation is very natural and, although it took getting used to, allowed a lot of room for good manoeuvres. Several times I caught myself chasing someone around a corner, preparing to get into a short range gunfight, only to discover an empty area and be surprised when they popped out of the ground.

Gun balance seemed really good as well. I only used the Splattershot Jr. and the Charger, but they were both compelling choices. I liked the ability to destroy other players with the Charger, but I really did miss the ability to roll out more quickly using the Splattershot Jr.'s higher rate of fire.

Didn't play with rollers, which I regret, but they seemed like very noob-friendly, yet skill-intensive weapons. The number of times I easily picked off someone rolling headlong towards me was about even with the number of times I saw a roller coming in from behind my squid loli and immediately died.

Great netcode and motion controls. Only saw a couple of minor game state hiccups, and the gamepad gyroscope was very accurate. Resetting the camera with the Y button was finicky at first, but I got used to it. No lag that I could feel and it ran at a solid 60fps at all times.

And that Kid Icarus-like jumping game you play in the lobby was a beautiful touch. Made the matchmaking process way more bearable.

>Cons

Would have liked the rounds to be a bit longer (maybe 30 seconds), but that would probably be poor for the game's balance. Aside from that, I honestly can't think of anything. Super hyped for this game.

>>16408

Charger by far. Seems like the highest skill ceiling of the bunch of default weapons, which I am usually attracted to in games. Secondary was kind of lame, especially considering the Charger's high ink consumption, but the special was really good and I liked playing with it.

Never ever buddy.

Other than that, agree with most of your post. I'm pretty excited for the game. Wish it was a bit cheaper, because I can see some merit to the argument that it's not worth 60$ out of the gate, but I think it'll become worth it over time so it's worth the initial investment. Not like Nintendo price drops anyway, and I want the game to succeed. Still buying day one.

>>16533

Wasn't aware there was a patent for mini-games while waiting for lobbys to fill. I'm glad Splatoon is doing it. The wait was what killed me in a lot of online shooters like this. And there'll be multiple games you can do while waiting, and not just Squid Jump, so I'm happy.

I was on the fence about this game for a while but that latest direct gave me the last push I needed to buy this game. I'm actually feeling kind of hyped for it. I haven't experienced that in a long time after the string of disappointments that was late 2014/early 2015.

2ebb56 No.16827

>>16818

I had some misgivings about it too, but after playing a bit of it at the testfire, it's damn fine. I'm still seeing people develop strategies for it, which is funny considering it's more of a laid back shooter game. While I wish it was a bit cheaper at launch, I think it'll be worth the money easily with how good the game seems to be, plus content being added to it fairly frequently.

I think it was them stress testing the servers in regards to the load of people they could handle. When I was playing it, there was a clear moment from 7:59 to 8:00 where someone at Ninty flipped a switch and the servers came back on.

I was busy playing Squid Jump at the time and such on other boards. It was entertaining at least. There might have been some server testing, like the anon said, but there's no way to tell. I thought it was odd as hell that they only got the servers back up at literally the last minute of the testfire. I only had one match before it shut down, and that's because I skipped the tutorial. Then when it hit the end of the testfire, they started working again like a charm and it was comparable to the past three. No real lag, only one instance of the connection being shoddy and kicking me.

Splattershot JR is the GOAT weapon.
