There is a religion in Silent Hill, they worship a god called Samael wich is a blibical demon, the religion is divided in 3 parts, one that wants to bring the god back, one that doesnt wich Vicent is part of, and the other I don't remember.

On the first game, alessa's mother part of that religion with some others, tried to bring their god back using Alessa, Alessa was a witch and choosen by their god, and so whould never trully die, and always ressurrect.

are you there?

227b05 No.620

>>619
Alessa had a chance of heart mid-ritual and so split her soul on two, not good or evil, just two, and so the god could never be born.

Harry found one of the souls, was a baby he named it cheryl. When she was a child they went into a trip. when they were in silent hill, alessa appared in front of the car making it crash.

Cheryl went missing, Harry went looking for her.

227b05 No.621

>>620
Everything on hell side of Silent Hill was because of Alessa's mind and power.

Since she was burned on the ritual, she stayed in a hospital, the siren was because of ambulance, whellchairs because it's how she was transpoted around.
The monster was her fears, fear of adults, insects, dogs, etc.
Hell side sh is a manifestation of alessas mind.

anyway, going back on story.

Harry found a women, alessa's mother, but he doesn't know it yet. And that women lies to him about the town and what is happening, she tells, their are trying to bring back their demon, and to avoid that he has to destroy the seals of metatron, that samael made to ressurrect himself.

but those seals was alessa doing to avoid samael returns.

Harry destroy all of it.

Cherryl and Alessa soul become one again. and with that Samael returns, he has a forced birth, and his body is alessas body.

And here is the thing I found most impressive about harry.

That god, alessa and cherryl are one now, his daughter is about to bring hell into the world. because the way hell silent hill looks like, its the paradise alessa's mother wants.
But that demon is his child, his dear daughter, but what does he do?
He kills it, he had no other option, he kills his own kid.

but god's chossen can't trully die, so a baby reborns at the moment, but it's not cherryl. Cheryl is dead, he killed, he had no other option and every reason in the world to hate that baby. but he takes the baby and raises as his own.

You can see how painfull it is for him in his notes on SH3

227b05 No.627

in their religion, humans lived forever, and for that had no notion of time and were unhappy as fuck. but then samael came and gave them death. and everything was well. that is what they believe may not be true
he used all his energy in something and then 'died', but could return to bring humans the paradise.

You will know more about a punished protag, on my take sh2, and why I don't want it on Silent Hills on the end of it.

SH2 starts with James Sunderland reading a letter he received from his dead wife.

He leaves his car behind, because the tunnel was blocked, so he goes on foot. He leaves the door to the car open, remember that.

walking to silent hill, he ends himself in a cemetery and finds a young lady, seeing grave, she is in silent hill looking for her mama. he leaves her behind and goes his way to the special place.

He finds a monster kills it, and goes his way to the special place. He has to enter an apartment because the way to there is blockade, and there he finds a monster.

A monster with a piramid shaped head, raping another monster, for real, he was raping the shit out it, he killed the other monster with rape. the raped monster was basically 4 legs, 2 down, two top, and a litte belly in the middle.

Eddie a fat bastard that looks crazy. he killed his neibourhood dog, because it barked at him.

once maria and james were running from the pyramid head, the monster that rapes, they ran into a elevator, the elevator door opens to james, but closes to maria, and so maria dies and james feels bad.

he then finds maria alive, but she dies by pyramid head again, but she appers alive next.

at sometime, james kills eddie, because he is a crazy fuck who thinks everyone is making fun of him and tried to kill james.

we learn more about the young lady we found at the cemitery.
Her father absuded her, and her mom did nothing about it. one day she burns her father alive, by setting the house on fire, but her mother and brother were there too, and both died, she lived in great pain after that, and the monster she encountered reminded her of that moment.
Those monster you could only encounter when you are next to her.

She then kills herself by staying at a burning place at silent hill. James says to her get out of there because it hot, but she say 'for me, it always like this'

I still consider Silent Hill THE horror game (not so much with the ones that came up as of late)

It was the second horror game i played, the first being RE2, and it was really scary, because unlike RE you can't just go guns blazing through the game instead you need to be careful on each encounter and make decisions based on your chances of surviving, and oftentimes ending with you fleeing in full panic with a couple of monsters chasing you.

The whole atmosphere of the game contributed to it being a psychological horror rather than just jump scares. I had a couple of scary moments in RE2 but on Silent HIll i was always on the edge of my seat hoping for the worst.

The only contradicting stuff about having played silent hill as one of my first horror games is that almost no other game could top it, and whenever i played another horror game i was sort of disappointed.

227b05 No.646

So James, had affairs, with strippers and so came maria, the perfect Mary in his mind. the monster with two legs symbolises what he sees in his wife. He is a fucking pervet.

All those people were in silent hill and seeing those monster as punishment for their wrong doins. except for Laura, who didn do nuffin wrong.

James couldn't take care of mary, and killed her, but went insane, and blocked that into his mind. The game show how out of his mind he is a lot of times, we may not notice, because 'well its just a game'. things he do: leave his car open. who the fuck does that? door right open to anyone get in.
Jumps into a black hole.
put his hand in a dirty toilet. etc.

the pyramid head is a represatation of James, thus why he rapes those monster and kills maria all the time.
Maria is all in James's mind, almost everything is, thus why the elevator's door don't open for her. She is not real.

The nurses and all sexual themes is because james is promiscuity and his guitly too.

Silent hill sents the bastard in a guilty in punishing trip, puting all his crimes in front of him, he does too with the cemitery girl and eddie.

The game is amazing on making it all subtle and etc.

And why I don't want that on Silent Hills. despite liking it on here:
it's beating a dead horse and lazy.

doing a punished protag, putting him against his crime, was done again in: Silent Hill Origins, Silent Hill Homecoming, SIlent Hill shatered memories and Silent Hill downpour.
basically every western sh.

>but kojima is japanese

yes, but he is not very subtle, for that to work, it requires to have a high amount of subtly. Also Guillerme del toro is on that too, and he is worse than kojima in being subtly.

I hope I'm wrong and the game turns out well. but I'm not hopefull

>What would be your ideal horror videogame? How would it differ from the Silent Hill series? What would it take from SH?

I couldn't care less about gameplay or story, it has to do horror well, no matter what kind of gameplay.

One mistake people make often with horror, is thinking dark, unknow, and blood are things to scare by.
Your eyes always adjust to darkness, the unknow always became know, and blood : pfffffff

the one things humans are afraid of is: thinking.
You make a game where you can run and hide and facing a monster. the person will run and hide without a second tought, so no scary thing.

because of that what I whould take from silent hill, is the feel of: what I do now?
and silent hill do the unknow thing for fear? yes, but it always put something new when the unknow become know, so you never know what you will face.

Also whould take from silent hill the fact that the protag don't fight or shoot very well. it gives tension when you have to fight a monster.

how whould differ, I think I whould give more complexity on gameplay, like stalker does, with inventary could slow you down, the tons of options on how to handle a weapon.

But I never tought much more than that.

227b05 No.665

>>661

also put more 'action leads to consequence' things in the story. this anon>>656 reminded me of the several endings.

and the game is full of spooky scary skeletons

I thought Angela stabbed her father, hence the whole bloody knife thing. I may be wrong, but wasn't there a newspaper article in the hospital that mentioned this? I also remember the devs saying she didn't kill herself during that encounter, her fate is unknown.
What also shocked me is that she is apparently around 17 years old, yet looks like 30.

They also confirmed that James left the body of his wife in the car and wanted to kill himself in Silent Hill, which does happen in the In Water ending, but his psyche broke and induced some form of amnesia. His wife didn't actually die years ago, but very recently.

Guy Cihi, the VA for James, has said in multiple interviews that he doesn't see James as a murderer. What he did was bad, but he's still just human and he was pushed to his limit. He got so into the role that the studio ended up crying during a recording session. Watch the interview if you've played the game, he's an amazing person.

I haven't played a game that even remotely holds a candle to the story of SH2.

I saw a video on /v/ a couple months back on a guy who does reviews for AAA games that have been coming out and he was going to do a review for The Evil Within but he ended up doing an entire video on the homogenization of gameplay mechanics. Specifically how many of new releases have all or most of the following traits
>3rd person over the shoulder camera
>Same controls
>crafting system
>stealth mechanics
and a few other ones. He made a very good point on the fact that many AAA game releases of seperate genres have almost the same mechanics throughout.

Been playing REmake. Holy shit it's so great. This is what survival horror is supposed to feel like.

The zombies are hard to kill, the dogs are even more difficult to deal with, and the atmosphere is fucking amazing. The puzzles are fucking great, it's one of the first times I've actually had no clue what to do or where to go for a long time I've been playing vidya, It's satisfying as hell to make any progress in the game at all, and it's got the right balance of frustration/reward.

What do you guys think of RE1/REmake?

Where would people like the horror to go next? What settings do you like and/or want to see?

Personally I think the creepy house/mansion/etc. is pretty much perfect for smaller settings but that's where they've always been. It's a bit of a 'this is a bit stale but I can't think of where else better to set it'.

Space settings are pretty good. Cold, mechanical and sterile and the mystery element of space horrors being absolutely anything.

Cave and underwater segments always get to me because I can't stand either of those in real life.

I suppose if there were a lot of landmarks like a big tower (for example), maybe the ability to climb trees to see around and drawing a map that the game places you on (like the one in LOZ: Phantom Hourglass - or maybe it was Spirit Tracks) it would hard but not frustrating.

A good representation of sewers would be nice, I was specifically talking drains though because that shit can also get real fucking claustrophobic when you're in there and the drain keeps getting smaller and smaller and you begin to lose your sense of time from being in there so long in the almost-complete darkness.

Oh, you mean like small ones you need to crawl through. The limited movement and sight would definitely be creepy. Could always have a sewer section where there's both large pipes/tunnels to walk through and the small pipes to crawl through.

Plus I find sewers never really capture how disgusting they can be - it's usually dark and a bit dirty. Nobody wants to crawl through sewage so it would be an extra level of it generally be horrible if a dev decided to make it more realistic. (Though most of the sewer levels I can think of aren't from horror games, those wouldn't want to go down the realistic route, so maybe a disgusting sewer has been done and I don't know about it.)

Not a true horror game, but I recommend Shadow Man.

You spend 90% of the game on the equivalent of hell, and half of that time on a hellish industrial complex that reminds of the hell parts of Silent Hill, combined with how weak you are, and the screams the enemies do, can be pretty scary.

What kind of game would it be? Open world? Or like a series of different urban areas that you progress though?

I like the idea of several large maps all connected together in which you have to scavenge for parts to create tools to fend of monsters.

Or perhaps a setting where it's to dangerous to travel at night so progress only happens through the day. With only a limited amount of time to move on, scavenge supplies and find an area to set up a camp and make it defendable. Once night falls the monsters come out and if your base is discovered, you will have to defend it but if you stay undiscovered you can rest for the night.

aa667a No.7247

>>6292
I like that idea. The focus of that would have to be with tight, open level design.

I'd say some large sandboxes connected with each other is a good idea. Your ideas on resource management is something you don't usually see in horror Read: Action themed horror games these days so it would probably end up as a survival horror rather than an action game. Which I love.

Thing is, you have to come up with a unique setting and theme to this kind of thing otherwise it would just be bland, probably, zombie garbage.

I would like to see a Metroidvania purposed as a horror. As a teenager, Metroid Prime genuinely scared me at times without being a horror game per se - the Space Pirate base in Phendrana was fucking tense. Likewise Dark Souls scared me at times, but let me qualify "scared" - I was scared for my character, not for myself, in both cases. I think a good horror game is about immersing oneself into the character and getting swept along by threats to them, not by having a jumpscare that breaks the fourth wall, which is somewhat how the Amnesia/FFaF games work. Honestly, if I'm focusing on something and I don't notice you come in the room, I am going to get equally shocked by you loudly and unexpectedly asking me if you can use some of my milk in the fridge as I am by some animatronic puppet suddenly appearing in the game. There is so little plot to those style of games that I couldn't give a toss about the characters. I mean, Amnesia tries, but ultimately I can't emphasise with some mingebag wanker that woke up in bad Lovecraft fanfiction one morning. I think a good horror game is all about letting me care about the characters and feel immersed in the lore - which means no platitudes, no obvious cliches, good writing, and a reason to care about the character and feel he/she is vulnerable.

That's pretty much what I was thinking.

Maps that are large in overall area, but will be mostly cramped interiors, alleys and tunnels with the occasional stretch of main road and open square.

Plenty of different houses to hide inside and loot from, the sewers could be a high risk/high reward area with few but dangerous creatures.

I'm a sucker for survival horror and inventory managing and looting. Yeah so far the only zombie setting I can think of at the moment that I enjoyed was Dead Space so I wouldn't mind if the game was in the same universe.

Otherwise, yes, it would have to have something somewhat original or a theme not commonly used.

So there's a first-person spooky spaceship game in the works by Camel 101 (I've never heard of them but it's not their first game. I think it's their first horror game though).

>Sleepers is a survival horror game set in the future, where the player controls a character who wakes up in a spaceship, with no memory of what happened. The spaceship is adrift in space, and most of the crew is dead or insane. The rest is changed…you’ll need to survive and find out what’s going on and what happened to the crew. Sometimes the hostiles can be taken out, but most of the times the best strategy is to run and hide.

>The game is played in first person view. While exploring, the player can pick up and interact with objects like doors, keypads, computer consoles, drawers, machinery, etc and use weapons (both melee and long range).

>The enemy units are powerful and numerous, which means that the player must be stealthy and evade combat when possible. There are weapons aboard the ship, but ammo is very limited.

Don't be a smart ass, I already know both were done by The Chinese Room. I figured I implied it.

The only horror game I'm looking forward to now is Routine. Glad to see they're not dead and just replacing placeholder art.

I don't think anybody enjoyed Machine for Pigs. I'm pretty sure it was impossible to die, so basically no element of fear, and it seemed lazier in terms of glitches (the jumping pig thing was found on the day of release iirc). I don't actually think you get in the same area with a monster at all - maybe one where the pig men ignore you?

Frictional should have paid more attention to what the Chinese Room were doing. It's all well and good making a spooky Dear Esther but that gets old fast.

>Also, how likely is it that I'll get used to the controls for RE4? Anyone else really struggle with it at first?

Which version?
