Of various reboots in gaming, who do you think got shafted the hardest from their original glory to something pretty pathetic? I say Tomb Raider. The reboot Lara is a fucking insult to one of the greatest 5th gen gaming icons. If you put me in a room with Donte and "Lara Croft", and a gun with two bullets, I'd let Donte take both shots and then we'd go out for a beer. I get it's meant to be her "origin" but we already had her "origins" in Tomb Raider 4 and Chronicles.

Though there's now a split between the games, isn't there? There's one line of games that follows the PTSD Lara and another line following the fun Lara (Tomb of Orisis I think it's called?).

Anyway, the problem with TR is that they got it all wrong. They went for "realism" when the original TR was not realistic, lara herself was a caricature based on 90s extreme comic design styles, thats it
The new lara its actually less realistic though since she has no muscle mass and her tits are still kinda big when you consider that women who lift and shit tend to get pectorals as well and thus are more 'flat'. Being gritty and dirty doesn't makes her any more real than 36DD bouncing tits did.
And the gameplay, well its just AAA garbage, you simply can't get a game pass the beancounters these days if you don't use generic TPS shit, god forbid someone in the "press" thinks the game its too complicated because there is no 'press X to win'

>>6376 >My knowledge of the TR story/lore is limited but was the change that the original Lara was a bored millionaire who decided to raid tombs for shits and the new one got trapped on an island, hates tombs and now has PTSD from murdering hundreds of dudes? No. That's the Anita Sarkeesian revisionist version of old Lara. For starters, Lara didn't become an adventurer because she was bored. She became one because when she was about 12 or so years old, she was the sole survivor of a plane crash that left her stranded in the mountains with no way to call for help. She survived on her own for about a week or two before finally finding civilization again. Rather than being triggered by this any time she saw a plane, the experience made her realize that she had never felt more alive than when she was stranded in the middle of nowhere. When she was older, her father disowned her when she told him she wanted to be an adventurer, leaving her penniless. Lara responded by going on adventures anyway and became filthy rich by writing books about her travels, which funded further adventures.
THAT is a powerful, independent woman, not new Lara.

Let's not kid ourselves, Bateson was casted after 6 months inside production and due to a very heavy fallout from fans

It was a source of embarrassment for them that Sega USA could sell Megadrives while Sega Japan couldn't. Then they were assigned the task of selling the Saturn, an exorbitantly expensive system with no English language software support on a bizarre hardware schedule.
Sega Japan basically squandered a 50% marketshare in the US to save face in Japan. Whether or not radical Sonic is good, it was effective at selling systems.

Contracts had that secret room planned by Tore Blystad, the future Absolution director. He made the team stop with what they were doing and make that room ASAP because he's a fag or who knows.
Contracts was not a sweet ride, the game i think costed more than Blood Money (40 million back in 2003) and was sincerely a let down compared to Codename 47 (story-wise) and Blood Money (gameplay-wise). Tore was then not taken to be the lead director for BM and instead it was a all-team cooperative, he didn't help his redemption either because he was the cool guy who made all the fucking redneck levels while the unknown cool guy made all the flashy ones. At least Tore did the A New Life level, which taking it from him i don't know if it was serious or not because how much of a parody it looks like.
He became the lead director for Absolution because everyone else with experience in all games had mass quitted after BM
Then we have DXHR, one thing is to have a cameo and another is to have a self-insert as the game's protag, then claiming you didn't want to and then interviews (in Squeenix forums IIRC) surfacing that he approved because he liked it so much.
And then you have Kojima with the IMO dumb cameos at Peace Walker and Phantom Pain. Somewhat harmless until you start to think it's all canon in his awfully-written story (but with good narrative, sorta)

>>6402 >Never played the old games I would recommend doing so, in hopes that you will understand why a lot of us older fans of the series are pissed off at the 2014 version.
The first 2 games (and to extent Deadly Shadows, but I will talk about this one later) had HUGE levels for you to explore, have challenging objectives that could change on you, fun and interesting secrets that rewarded the player with more loot, and even secret passages to easily sneak by patrols. The games would only give you clues to objectives/secrets if you took the effort to look for them. you could go back to areas you've already been in in case you missed something and not be punished for wanting to do so. you could even keep notes in game when you found codes for safes/doors.
The game's world/lore is one of the best out there. Although most of the guards/NPCs looked the same, the dialogue for the characters made them unique. The world itself was varied in each level (for the most part) and was a blast to go through.
The gameplay for the first 2 games was perfect for a stealth game; full control of where you wanted to jump/mantle, kill/knock out any guard at your own risk and could be caught at the last second, various tools that could be used for more than just one purpose, and the game would reward/punish you based on how much you've explored (and stolen) by allowing you to buy items for the next mission, but depending on how much loot you stole, you could only buy so much.
The Third game was considered the black sheep of the series (until 2014), due to removing stable items/mechanics (such as swimming) from the game, but it kept the lore intact despite the original dev studio closing down. It did however, improve some mechanics of the game (such as knock outs can only work from behind unnoticed). I liked it, but it wasn't as good as the first 2.
Then the 2014 version comes out, and being a dumbass at the time, I bought it not believing all of the criticism because I wanted a new thief game so bad. In the end, it was like
>>6418 said, but also had other issues, such as not allowing you to jump/mantle anywhere you wanted (instead we could swoop to a different spot), rope arrows can only be used on certain beams, still no swimming, and no punishment for not stealing enough loot (hell, the game rewards you with money for completing the level). It does nothing like the old games, and spits on their legacy.
TL;DR, Buy/Pirate the old games and play them to see why fans such as myself hate the fucking piece of shit that is Thief 2014
