>Legend of Zelda Thread
First, a few questions:
>What's your favorite Zelda game and why?
>Who's your favorite character and why?
>Want to have more Legend of Zelda discussions?
Come here:
>>>/loz/
Its a pretty cool board, and could use more love. But, yeah. Zelda thread.
My answers to the questions?
My favorite game is either Minish Cap, Link to the Past, and pic related.
My favorite character is probably Link.

4712d5 No.777

Link to the Past is my favorite. Wind Waker 2nd.

Link is my favorite, if a little lacking in unique character.

Doesn't seem like something that deserves it's own board, it'd be a glorified general thread, but even deader since it's a board.

Anyway.

>What's your favorite Zelda game and why?

Majora's Mask. Atmosphere, music, story, characters. It hit a lot of notes perfectly. When I first played it as a kid I was moved at just about every Song of Healing moment. That sounds pretty fucking gay, but there it is.
>Who's your favorite character and why?
Midna, I guess. I feel like she has the most complete character arc of any Zelda character. Plus fantastic porn.
>Want to have more Legend of Zelda discussions?
Sure. But I also don't think that what merits frequent threads merits a board.

>Doesn't seem like something that deserves it's own board, it'd be a glorified general thread, but even deader since it's a board.
This OP, it doesn't seem like the kind of thing that deserves its own board. I came here because it provides a service different than what /v/ can offer, and enough of a variety of things to talk about that this place might actually become self-sustaining. Talking about one specific game franchise (although a varied and large one at that) provides discussion that dries up quick.

Four Swords or four links adventure, don't know the name or wich is which. and the first zelda.

Zelda's status differs from each game.

TP zelda is such a bitch Link leaves her ass to search for Midna.

SS Zelda is best girl by default since there are no other girls.

>What's your favorite Zelda game and why?
Majora's Mask because you get to be Bill Murray from Groundhog Day and at the end of the game, nail every event perfectly and feel like a big dick hero, whereas in most Zelda games you feel like you didn't do anything but walk here, stab there, even though you do a lot of cool shit. I don't know why MM nails the game feel and satisfaction so well, it's insane how good it is for a game held together with thread and blankets. Bravo Nintendo.

There was a lot of hype for the sword mechanics, but instead of being a nice addition here and there and a tasty icing on top of the cake, it was used for every enemy in the game. There came a point where slicing sideways instead of vertically wasn't fun anymore, just a grind. Not to mention you can't move and swing at the same time very well which is fucking ridiculous for a game like that. The hub world was entirely lifeless. There are about three things to do, including Skyloft the hometown, even though it's supposed to have the same feel as wind waker, which has something to do in every single square. The assistant character is the most annoying character in any game, even worse than Navi. She constantly makes obnoxious sounds through the wiimote when she has things to say, even though she always has something to say. I can't comment on the story since I didn't finish the game out of sheer boredom. From what I played though, it wasn't very enticing, and I played like 4-5 hours of it.

>What's your favorite Zelda game and why?
Majora's Mask. I like the ambiance and I like the time limit/Bill Murray mechanics. A lot of people hated the time management but I spent a large period of time a year or two ago planning out how to do a 100% run in as few time-resets as possible. Making it to Sakon's thieving event or the farm defense on time was always somehow tricky.

>Who's your favorite character and why?

I want to say Midna since she's the most nuanced and fleshed-out character in the series. However TP was such a tedious game that I have to say the Mailman from MM just for shits and giggles. Watching him scoot his ass around on his bed was hilarious.

>Want to have more Legend of Zelda discussions?

Not a huge Zelda fan, but they all have their ups and downs. Most of the games relatively equal out for me. I might prefer Wind Waker a bit because I like games with sailing.

>What's your favorite Zelda game?
My favorite 2D Zelda is ALttP while-as my favorite 3D Zelda is YOU GUESSED IT Majora's Mask
ALttP pioneered 2D adventure games for me and I don't think there's been any other 2D Zelda games able to recapture the magic of what made ALttP unique and special. The only other 2D Zelda I almost like as much as ALttP is Minish Cap.
As for MM, I personally think that MM had what is closest to a "cinematic" or "living world" inside of a Video game. The game doesn't throw cutscenes at you to understand the world around you, rather you explore the world itself and discover everything about the world to understand it. It's quite amazing how perfect they nailed this recipe in a Zelda game.

>Who's your favorite character

Hero of Time Link. He is straight up one of the most noble and heroic figures I've ever seen in video games. Taking over the roles of other heroes to complete what they haven't finished and spending almost his entire life doing nothing but saving others. Straight up fucking badass.

In hopes of bringing up discussion I'd like to say that I honestly think that Skyward Sword was a good Zelda game. The motion gimmick, which seemed annoying to most people, actually was a really endearing trait to me making the game feel like a revival of the series rather than a game trying to ride the coat-tail of its predecessors. (Twilight Princess, A Link Between Worlds)

If you could personally come up with a twist on the story format of a Zelda, and make a different angle than the typical 'Ganon's back, kidnapped the princess too. Go rescue her.' What would you do?

I think the way Twilight Princess ended for him, with the Triforce of Power actually abandoning Ganondorf and letting him die, opens up for something new that Nintendo will probably ignore. I'd love to see a new antagonist, or maybe ally, who has the Triforce of Power and see if it works in different ways for different people. We only ever see the triforce with Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf for most of the series.

4712d5 No.1172

>>1097
Link has the triforce of power and you play the anti-hero in a peaceful Hyrule ruled by Ganon who has the triforce of Wisdom, Zelda using the triforce of courage attempts to upset the establishment and you are her champion of chaos.

Link, Zelda and Ganonondorf all start out being friends. Link becomes a soldier, Zelda becomes a high ruling see what I did there queen, and Ganondorf is a pig farmer why pig? Because of dark beast ganon. He's kinda pigish I guess? so, Zelda is soon corrupted by her politcol power, and starts to make shitty laws that makes everyone's lives absolute shit. Link wants to stop her shit, so he teams up with Ganondorf to go looking for the mastersword and the try force. Turns out there's also a masterhammer, and that's what Ganondorf gets. Then, they go back to Zelda, who has now turned into Tainted Light Zelda similar to when Galadriel goes bat shit crazy in the lord of the rings. Link and Ganondorf beat the shit out of her, and win back the kingdom. Bing bang boom, best story twist ever. I'm gonna make a game for this now

So I saw this discussion and thought Bandit King Ganon was the coolest shit ever, so since I just got my new Wacom tablet, I decided to test it out. Still trying to get used to everything. It's so weird.

I wanted to make a character who somewhat resembled Ganon but seemed more… heroic(?)
He's still a battle mage after all so I wanted to keep that aesthetic mixed with that of a spear wielder like beast Ganon.

abd03c No.1366

>>1360
There's not much you can do with a character design for an 8-bit game, I don't think. But while your design is really cool, I think making it look more like a different character who has some references to Ganondorf. Does that makes sense? Someone that's clearly thematically related to him, but they're not a reincarnation like Link is, or maybe Zeldas. But Zeldas have a lot more variety in how they look compared to Link.

5e6ecf No.1406

>>1366
What you said does make sense. Thanks for your insight. I'll try to follow it while designing the game.

5e6ecf No.1615

So, I've started working on the basic engine of the game. It'll be a lot faster and easier to make the rest of the game if I build a framework first. Although that will take a while, its totally worth it. I post here and on /loz/ when I have the next update.

I still really like Ocarina of Time. Alot of people shit on it for being "overhyped" or "overrated" or whatever, but I think it succeeds in numerous areas such as successfully transitioning the 2D elements and themes of previous Zelda games to a 3D format.

That said, I'm tentatively optimistic about this latest Zelda. If it's as open-world as the rumors say, I think it'll be a big step in an exciting new direction.

I liked Wind Waker but I know what you mean, big world with nothing in it. That is one of the issues of having a nature-based open world: nature's got fuck all in it so it's hard to fill it without it losing the nature aspect.

abd03c No.1657

>>1655
Even if they put plenty of stuff into it, what are they going to do? We've had some good open world games, but personally I'm one of the people that think the genre is overrated. How are they going to give us stuff to do in the forests and fields without it feeling like something from RDR? Maybe they'll surprise me, but I've been bothered about how they'll go about the open world aspect of it ever since Aonuma basically paraphrased Howard on 'See that mountain? You can climb it.'

And Zelda games have had empty worlds ever since Wind Waker, I don't know if they'll break the cycle here. WW was empty on the ocean, Twilight was empty in big parts of the game, including Hyrule Field, and Skyward Sword had a big overworld sky with jack shit in it but Skyloft and a couple of minigame islands.

I'm optimistic. I've never disliked any of the 3D Zelda games (except Twilight Princess) and if I'm able to enjoy my time with Skyward Sword, I'm sure I'll be able to enjoy this game. I think they'll be able to mix the entertainment gathered from sidequests in MM and port them over to an open world like Zelda U may have. Not to mention what seem to be faster gameplay options like Arrow-Time and hopefully faster sword-play following the combat from OoT and MM3D

Miyamoto, although not the director, has said that there will be "plenty to do" in the overworld.

True, an open world isn't necessary beyond the usual sort that appears in the top down/2D ones. It's just added distance between you and wherever you want to go. They've always been a bit empty in places but it somehow works for the top-down ones more because possibly it's denser with enemies.

I don't think they've said if they're going for the usual 'do it in this order' style of dungeons or the Between Worlds one where you could decide. The latter would go with the open world more perhaps.

>>1780
I haven't play any of them since I played TP (though I played it after ST - TP was just the 'the last chance' even though it's not the one I hate the most. SS and BW haven't appealed to me to buy anything of the series since).

>I think that one major plus for the series is that it tried to be its own thing rather than do whatever its "in" at the time, something few other franchises do
They usually manage sticking to the elements people go to the series for (dungeons, items, varying balance of combat/puzzles, repeating story elements, etc.) and trying something new. Whether or not it works is something else. Copying ideas rarely works unless there's going to be more to it - 'let's put in an open world and …' needs the something new as well (just an example, maybe the open world will be fine).

Majora's Mask because they've got everything right in this game. Its also very different than every other Zelda game, its the most unique in my shitty opinion.
My second is Ocarina of Time. I like how puzzles are made in this game, and the world is so huge and full of secrets. I love how you can go to the future on this game and everything is fucked up.
My third favorite would be Link to The Past. Again, i love the aspect of going to "another dimension" sort of, in this case the Dark World.

Majora's Mask. Possibly because it was the first one I played that was really "mine" and not shared with my brother/dad (yep i had a vidya dad, he doesn't play vidya anymore though trying to get him back in).

But every time I go back and play it I can't help but admire the Groundhog Day feel that it has. Like how after clearing the Deku temple the Deku King is cool with you, but when you go back in time he'll kick you out for being human again. People don't retain the experiences in the slightest (except for having given you bottles/masks) and will treat you the same as that first day you got dropped in the loop.

And as you keep playing the game and re-saving each race so you can get the side-quest stuff (Gilded Sword, Stray Fairies, Frog Choir piece of heart, etc.) you gradually transition from being confused and helplessly stuck to a master of the time loop, knowing where all the silver rupees are, knowing each character's back story like the back of your hand. The Deku Merchant Title Deed Pieces of Heart represent this perfectly.

Midna because not a boring fairy (although Tatl having a real personality was nice), and god-tier porn.

I'd have to agree with the anons that say a LoZ board isn't really necessary. I think we have just enough discussion of the series in the vidya boards, and a dedicated board would get autistic and circlejerky fast.

Link to the Past. Nostalgia mostly, but that game is still solid.

>Who's your favorite character and why?

Midna. Fun size and full size version. Her theme song is good, her tsundere character is cute.

75bcc2 No.7843

>What's your favorite Zelda game and why?
Link's Awakening. It was my first videogame, and it's held up even to this year as one of my favorites. Excellent atmosphere, memorable music, challenging dungeons, epic boss fights, and one hell of a Twin Peaks/Evangelion twist puts it at the top of the pile for me.

>Who's your favorite character and why?

Midna. Link has no character, Zelda fluctuates between games, and while Ganondorf is intriguing, Wind Waker was the only game to even TRY to capitalize on his potential depth, and the Skyward Sword came in and fucked it ALL up.

Midna manages to pack everything great about a female game protagonist in one: helpful, important to both the plot and gameplay, interesting, grows as a character along with our understanding of her, and seriously, have you not looked at her? Even if you're not sexually attracted to her, you have to admit her mischievous energy is endearing, and her design is just cuddleable in general.

majora's mask. the 3-day cycle is one of many tricks to greatly expand the depth of each environment. you have areas which change by day, time of day, curse (whether cursed or un-cursed), and more. of course this means the total number of areas is reduced, but they're content-dense. at the same time it doesn't suffer from "dungeon item syndrome" because of the huge array of masks, and the actual dungeon items (arrows) serve as weapons anyway. after that I'm partial to the Oracle games.

What do you guys think is the reason behind Nintendo delaying Zelda U and not showing it at E3 this year?

To work on new ideas and adding content like he said? To scrap current builds and start fresh?

To make Link into a girl to appease an annoying vocal minority?

Any theories on why they won;t show anything at E3?

dd8e95 No.9774

>>9773
That actually is a good question. Lets say they are using the delay to heavily redesign/expand on the overworld and open world stuff, which is what Aonuma's announcement sounds like. What is stopping them from showing off gameplay in a confined dungeon? Or just having a story trainer at the very least? That is a bit odd for it to just be dropped from E3 entirely.

Of course that bit about E3 could have been a mistranslation. Aonuma always seems to be mistranslated everytime he opens his mouth.

7eaf96 No.9775

>>9774
This is why I brought up "what if zelda was a girl".

The only reason I can think of for them not wanting to show anything is because they plan on changing who you're going to be playing as. It's likely not the only reason for the game's delay, but would the no-show

The optimist in me wants to believe they're going to do the much smarter thing and implement either selectable gender or Create-A-Link

dd8e95 No.9780

>>9775
Link is already pretty feminine, it would take no time at all to slightly alter the model to make it blatantly female. Hell, they could probably get away with just saying the existing one is a female Link.

Character creation/customization I could see if they end up going in a more RPG direction with this game, which is more than possible.

7eaf96 No.9784

>>9780
It'd be a better idea in every way even if they weren't going the RPG route.

It appeases everybody, and far better fits the theme of reincarnation of the hero's spirit and the whole theme of "Link is a vessel for the player" than bluntly swapping his gender does.

The idea of them scrapping an already-built, completely functional male model to replace it with a female model is ridiculously stupid, but I can't get the thought out of my mind, and it bugs me.

I just want them to show me fucking SOMETHING before the year is up. Maybe during the April 1 Direct, God willing.

I would be for that as well, but really changing out Link's model wouldn't take very much time at all even if they made a totally new one. But that wouldn't be necessary, I mean just give this existing model a or b cup breasts, and there you go.

7eaf96 No.9792

>>9790
Yeah. The ease of it would make a hard change instead of character creation even more ridiculous, if you only need to add some tits and widen the hips some to the already existing model.

As a side note, I always thought he looked much more like a typical anime boy in his early teens than a girl Link. An in-between of a Kid and Adult Link.

Do you think they're going to show any footage at any point before the end of the year?

>>What's your favorite Zelda game and why?
I'm fairly split between Ocarina with its stellar pacing and intuitive controls by taking a page from Mario 64 and Wind Waker, with its polished controls and great dungeons. For all the experimentation the series has taken so far even since the second NES game, I want to see a Zelda game with Wind Waker's controls, Ocarina's pacing and cast of characters, Majora's storytelling, and an aesthetic somewhat like Twilight Princess', but with a better commitment between the realistic OR the stylized, and not the disappointing compromise that resulted.

An antagonist with some good depth and not just some puppet for the Big G would work nicely, too. He's been in every one of the mainline games except for Majora's Mask and Zelda 2, he's a mustache twirler, and using him is getting really tired out at this point. That's definitely one place where the powers that be need to try something new with the upcoming Wii U entry.

If they're going to try weird experiments with controls, I'd also appreciate some kind of alternative. While I might like the controls more than others or vice versa, it'd be neat to make the familiar an option for somewhat polarizing creative decisions like Wii Motion Plus' extensive use in Skyward Sword, which bothered me not just in the way it turned out, but also by the inability of most fans to hold Nintendo to any level of accountability for pushing a failed experiment in game controls.

>>Who's your favorite character and why?

Midna was the shining light in the mediocrity of Twilight Princess and was easily one of the most interesting characters in the Zelda series for a long time. Only thing I didn't like is that every aspect of her, in the writing, animation, and voice is that it made everything else there look even worse. She had a reason to be with Link, and it wasn't her sole calling.

Same. I never understood how /v/ bandwagoned MM into 'the zelda game we must all hate now'. Probably my biggest problem with /v/, people shitposted an opinion enough and it eventually became accepted as fact for the whole board.

I agree in all regards. Midna is by far THE best companion in all of Zelda, none compete with her. And also the only character I'd go straight for. I really hope we can see her again some time.

Overall, Majora's Mask stands out as my favorite. It was just so unique in comparison to other ones. The atmosphere, the 3 day system (And I never understood why people complained, it wasn't hard to deal with AND you had a song that slowed time down to a crawl giving you ample time to do whatever the fuck you wanted), hell it felt like an actual breathing world instead of a world that is static and only exists to continue Link's adventure. Where as Termina is on it's own wild ride and Link is there to help instead of being the focus. There's just a lot of stories developing in the background all at once.

All that said, I am hype for the new Zelda. Link between Worlds was a good indication of trying to move back to a bit more open ended and more difficult Zelda game. While it wasn't THAT difficult it was noticeably more so compared to recent titles.

The copied design was probably intentional then since both of Vaati's appearances are before LA timeline wise but that might be giving them too much credit.

Whenever I think of Vaati, I always think of his humanoid versions not the giant eyeball. It's hard to make a giant floating eyeball particularly interesting though for a monster form it is sinister with its cute little bat wings.

The main one that people seem to bring up is Water Temple but shit, I remember being stumped on many occasions as a kid but still getting through. I'll never understand people like you, refusing to play games because they look too colorful. Part of the appeal of the Zelda series is that it makes you feel like a kid again and attempts to capture that sense of discovering the world around you. It was inspired by Miyamoto's childhood experiences playing around innawoods and stumbling upon caves and stuff. Zelda isn't meant to be an epic, gritty fantasy, it's supposed to be a whimsical fairy tale that instills a sense of childlike awe and wonder.
