Can anyone recommend me a metroidvania game that has a bit more emphasis on character customization? I just played LoS MoF:HD, which didn't scratch the itch, Super Metroid which was great, but still not quite what I'm looking for, and I'm part way through Metroid, but I just want to have a bit more freedom with weapon choices and maybe other more RPG like stuff like leveling up, or armor. Consoles I have are PS4, PS3, PC, and Wii U. Also, general metroidvania thread for those who'd like to discuss them.

Does Dark Souls count as metroidvania?

>>8255 I'm not sure, but I should have mentioned that I've played all the souls games. I'm looking more for the 2d variety. I actually just found out a handful of the DS Castlevanias are on the wii u VC, so I might just pick up one of those. It's partially where I'm getting the idea from, I don't remember which but I remember one of them allowed you to change weapons and equip armor as stuff.

Metroidvania is not a genre. If you're looking for a great Metroid-like though, try La-Mulana.

>>8253 Yup, it has every element of a metroidvania.

>>8261 Thanks, I do have La Mulana, but for some reason I just couldn't figure it out, but maybe it's a horse I should get right back up on.
>>8263 I'll have to keep it in mind, since it seems it's available on psn.

Valdis Story is a metroidish game with a good level up system (you actually allocate stat points to build your character in different ways).

>>8308 Nice, and it's one that I picked up during a steam sale I guess.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, keep em coming. I'm just doing some stuff around the house but I'm checking this thread occasionally too.

Not entirely sure if it's the exact sort of customization you're looking for, but if you haven't played it yet, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow allows for (in addition to all the weapons and armor you can find) you to have three souls set at once, allowing for one that grants a passive effect, one that grants an active one when holding R (and consumes MP), and bullet souls that count as subweapons (which also consume MP). While some are admittedly rather weak in comparison to other souls, it can be pretty nice to just fuck around and discover a new soul that might wind up proving extremely useful. I know last time I played it, I was working to get every soul in the game, found a Biphron Soul, and was rather impressed with just how good it was. Wound up using it through the rest of the play through too. In general though, most of the Metroid style Castlevania entries (Symphony of the Night on the PS1, as well as the GBA and DS entries) will probably have what you're looking for, to some degree at least: leveling up, weapons, armor, and items to collect, spells and abilities to gain, while still have the Metroid style emphasis on exploring and generally needing new abilities to get to new places.

It's not exactly a Metroidvania, but have you tried Catacomb Kids? It's got the RPG stuff you're looking for in spades + the exploration, but it's more akin to Spelunky. I'm enjoying it a lot even though I'm super awful at it and keep dying on the first level.

>>8275 I fucking loved SotN and ever since I've been trying to play games that can capture that feeling it gave me. I listened to some anons and picked up La-Mulana. I was lied to.

>>8394 La mulana does scratch that itch its just got a really steep difficulty curve. Don't feel bad for using an FAQ for some stuff.
Also if you haven't played order of ecclesia, all your weapons and spells are souls, so its pretty customizable.

Castlevania Curse of Darkness isn't strictly a metroidvania being a 3D game with combat somewhere between severance and DMC. But it's a castlevania where you can craft weapons, all of which have different move sets, and level up your pet with different forms depending on which weapon you use the most. Like all the castlevanias your armour doesn't show on your character. Which is a good or bad thing depending on your perspective, I think it's a good thing because hector is hot.

It's not exactly a metroidvania, but Terraria

>>8247 I really wouldn't call Tomba! a metroidvania.
I love the game, but it's like…a side scrolling adventure game revolving around completing a series of tasks.
It feels more like an adventure game than anything else.
