/svidya/ is a strict /v/ alternative for moderated vidya discussion. This Board wasn't intended to replace /v/ but to aid Anon's in having vidya discussions with zero shitposters. Thanks for adding /svidya/ to /v/'s recommended boards, Mark.

Why do people hate Steam Workshop so much?

858521 No.8300

A lot of really annoying little problems/issues with it that add up, main things for me would be:
>Horrible layout
>Bad organization and lackluster search tools make everything hard to find
>Aggressive filesize limits and content policing
>Auto-updating when you have multiple mods is a guaranteed disaster

>auto-updating, mod load order, active mod/file selection are nil unless implemented in-game
>abysmal search tools and nonsensical ratings/views organization
>attention whores posting up their shit in the wrong categories if not all categories at once unless there's a strict in-game-implemented categorization scheme

It's modding advertized to people who by average don't know shit about modding. moddb is infinitely superior

Yeah, nah, not anymore. Fuck that shit.

but that's wrong. I just went there and can download mods without even having an account

explain how steam workshop has any redeeming value. it's complete shit, mods for pc illiterates full of straight up bad or meme mods

You can download stuff sure, but commenting, uploading and rating requires them to have you sign up with facebook.

I don't know if this is still the case, but I'm one of the many contributors they drove out of their site with that bullshit. Fuck them for trying to force social media shit onto gamers. Also the owner is a giant fag enabler.

Someone needs to make a ModDB that isn't shit and doesn't get owned by a fag.

As a contributor, I understand your frustration. It absolutely is bad. However as a content hoster for people using mods, it has many great mods for older games. Steam workshop has another problem of having next to no content, because the people who are hardcore modders have already uploaded their mods to more specific places for the games.

As far as alternatives go, I've been using nexus a bit but they seem too specific on the games they have. I get my mods otherwise from specific fan websites for the games, like AoMheaven (a decade of age of mythology, literally the place for aom mods, also aokheaven for age of kings) or heroescommunity where people post links for stuff like Horn of the Abyss.

Precisely why we need a more comprehensive alternative.

It'd be good if such an alternative doubled as a directory for mod websites as well as hosting mod content. That way you can search up a game, and if it doesn't have mods for the game you want, it will have references to dedicated mod websites for those games.

But seriously, the owner of ModDB became a giant asshole when his website started getting big. He began deleting other people's mods or outright banning the contributor if they started hosting content he viewed as problematic or otherwise brought down his public image. I tolerated that shit right up until the point he added Facebook integration.

Because I can easily get mods I want in a couple of seconds.

>mods for pc illiterates

I mod from a variety of sources. Making something easier doesn't mean it's automatically bad. If the mod I want is sitting right there on Steam workshop, why would I bother going anywhere else?

It's got some hiccups with some games, and not all mods are available there, but when it works (which is 99% of the time) and when the mods are available (almost all except waifu/porn mods) I see no problem with Steam workshop.

7281dd No.8387

>>8386
Also, the workshop not only requires you to create an account to be able to download mods (minus on nexus for this as well), you also can't download mods without a third party downloader to download those mods for you. If I can't directly download mods from my internet browser, into the trash it goes.

1c675e No.8430

>>8387
> you also can't download mods without a third party downloader to download those mods for you

What game does this? I've never experienced it. We are talking about Steam Workshop right?

>Also, the workshop not only requires you to create an account to be able to download mods

Well yes, you need a Steam account?

7281dd No.8435

>>8430
Steam itself.

Instead of every normal mod site where you could just search a mod and download, mods are tied directly to the hoster with the workshop.

1c675e No.8473

>>8435
But if your game is on Steam in the first place then this is a non issue? You're not going to mod a Steam game without using Steam dude…

7281dd No.8495

>>8473
Steam isn't the only place to get games on PC.

976ab5 No.8680

So we need an alternative for a mod database. Anyone up for such a thing?

41c6a1 No.8700

>>8495
That's not the point that anon is making.
Your argument is valid, though.

You pointing out the inconvenience of Steam Workshop being having to have a Steam account and Steam itself installed is a non-issue to almost all PC gamers.
Most have those already readily accessible on their desktop anyway and may actually be more convenient than alternatives.

Which is also why I believe Steam Workshop is being used: Convenience.

It certainly can't be the actual usability of it. The navigation is horrible and slow and finding something you want is a matter of luck.

Personally, I usually search for fansites of the specific game and go from there. I always find what I want that way and get valueable insight as to what mods are worth bothering with.

1c675e No.8786

>>8495

Don't all workshop games require Steamworks - or are almost all exclusively played through Steam anyway? So it's not like you're going to often be buying a non-steam version of a game and trying to install mods anyway.

Basically, if you've got the game in the first place, you've got access to Steam Workshop anyway.

I just don't see why anyone would deliberately go out of there way to go to a different website, find a mod, download it and manually install it when you can just click the workshop button in the client, type in the mod you want and download it there. It's several seconds vs several minutes (assuming you know what mod you want).

>Cities Skylines

>just have to hack a single Steam account of a popular modder and thanks to auto-update you can infect thousands of PCs with malware
Thanks Steam

Does that mean he took down nude mods or some shit?

Holy shit that's a pretty big exploit.

>>8789
Whichever ones he deemed to risque, or offended his sensitivies. Obviously he left the ones that fit his fetishes alone, the hypocritical bastard. Don't know how it is now, as he may have either nuked all nude mods or rescinded his position on them. Not like I'm going back there to check.

If we're talking the Garry's Mod section, it's almost unmoderated.

Example: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=416404773&searchtext=

e241bb No.13073

I use it to mod Cortex Command and L4D2.

Since Workshop only works well with modular mods. And there is others alternatives in modding sites. At last the Workshop is helping to revive old mods for CC.

that's intensely significant. Would it affect linux computers as well?

a4b8c3 No.13294

It's really restrictive as far as what you can actually do with the mods. Sound too loud? Want to make it a bit more quiet? You're fucked.
