ITT: That series/franchise you know is dead but can't let go if being dead. Anonymous 03/30/15 (Mon) 20:55:54 7adfc4 No. 9333 [View All]
Has there been a franchise that you just couldn't "let go"? A series/franchise that you'd wish was still going and be alive? Whenever you play a game of that series you keep imagining what it'd be like if a new game would come out despite knowing that its dead? For me it was the Megaman and DMC franchise, I really enjoyed the Classic/X/Zero/EXE/Legends series of Megaman and I enjoyed DMC 3/1/4. They're quite enjoyable to play, I've replayed those games today and have had plenty of fun most modern games nowadays fail to give me. Though whenever I play them I always think about the possibilities the next instalment could have with today's technology if it were utilized properly, for some reason even though I know they're both dead I still can't let go of them and really wish for there to be a sequel of some sorts for a satisfying conclusion.

I've always wanted TWEWY to get a sequel, and Squeenix has always been a huge cocktease about it. And then, of course, there's Chrono. I really should get around to playing Cross, but it hurts knowing there won't be any more.

Nothing can last forever, so I'd really prefer to see things I like die with some dignity rather than end up turning into some sort of abomination being kept alive by a machine, begging daily for someone to end its wretched existence. Bioshock has been like some sort of glimpse into an alternate reality where I get to see what System Shock 3 would be like. If only the same could have happened for Thief or Hitman.

What I hate about megaman, specially the PS1 X games is how amazing the gameplay is but how horribly done the levels, enemies and bosses are. They're all piss easy and the games just end in a mere hour. If only someone would actually make a modern X game I would love it. As for me it has to be Advent Rising, Dawngate and Tribes. Advent Rising because the first game was so damn promising Dawngate because for once Moba devs actually wanted to make a good game that wasn't a cash grab and it was published by EA of all people which was probably the reason for its cancelation. Tribes because Hirez a shit and not many play TribesNet

>>12430 >how horribly done the levels, enemies and bosses are. Really? I'd disagree and say the levels and enemy placement is done well throughout the X games (excluding X6, that game had awful level and enemy/boss design) along with the bosses being quite fair (though some are just way too easy).
>They're all piss easy and the games just end in a mere hour.I can agree with that though that's probably due to the rock paper scissors nature of most of the Megaman games which tend to make each game a cakewalk to go through. Its why I am thinking of doing buster/sabre only runs because the bosses are a lot more challenging.

>>12449 X4 is also piss easy with buster only/no armor runs
X5 only gets really fun and challenging if you play it on Xtreme, use no armors(that includes Fourth/Force armor) or upgrades and even then it's only for a few bosses like Bolt Kraken(Aka Infinity Mjinion but actually fun and fair) and the fire TRex dude whatever his name.
My problem with the PS1 games is how lazy everything is. They recycle a lot, some of sprites feel very lazy in their animation(This is really present in X6 with Rainy Turtloid), how some levels feel phoned in, and so on.

>>12450 In all honesty I didn't actually like the PS1 X games that much compared to the SNES X games. They were decent but most of the time they felt bland and "empty" if you kind of understand what I mean, I was also disappointed in them using pre-rendered stage graphics rather than creating them as sprites from the ground up since most of the stages just aren't that memorable.
I'd honestly like to see an X game done in 3D properly (X7 was awful but had potential to be good) and would like to know what the game will be like. I honestly think X8 should have taken X7's approach and improved on it rather than just going back to what works.

I feel like the reason why the PSX games weren't so good is because they introduced Zero as a playable character and had to end up having these very bland stages and weapons so that both characters can have a shot.
X6, while having horrible level design half the time felt more suited to X(besides the gate stages) because Zero was overpowered as shit and a secret unlockable character. Plus when X6 had good level design(Wolffang, Metal Shark Player Yammark, Turtuloid without nightmare dark) it was pretty good.

>>12455 Anyways as for X7, the execution was horrible. Despite having some pretty nice soundtracks and a variety of ride armors the way they handled it was horrible. I'd like to think a 3D X would play something slightly similar Cloudbuilt but with more of an emphasis on fighting or Vanquish with a vertical element, more firepower and more speed.
Megaman Zero would be easily done as a devil may cry-ish type of game, if there's one thing I have to give that isn't audio related to X8 it's the Z Knuckles and the entirety of Zero's weaponry.
Axl I guess would play a bit more stealthily, something like MGS but again more of an emphasis on fighting and deception, I'd love to use the A-Trans in unique and fun ways to mess with enemies instead of a tool to get a secret every three levels.
Whatever they were thinking with X7 was probably infulenced by some drug. I don't know what kind of idiot thought the ridiculously clunky and slow, auto lock on infested, horribly designed and easily exploitable product was a representation of an actual 3D X game.
I don't know what is it about the PS2 X games but they have a habit of making X ridiculously game breaking, especially his third charge shot that covers the entire screen.

Another reason I highly dislike Inafune apart from many other things was that at the start of X4 and up to X7, was when X got pushed out of the spotlight and if anything there was a larger focus on Zero who had a better back story and if anything I felt that the stages were more suited towards Zero rather than X since most of the enemy placement was ideal for someone who engaged in close range combat compared to someone who participates in long ranged combat not to mention the Z sabre doing more damage than the X-buster.
Heck look at the opening stage of X7, you don't even play as X and have to unlock him later on.

I really don't understand that either, I am probably guessing there was a really impatient producer who's sole focus was to make money and rather than testing the game to make sure it works properly and doesn't run like a mess, it instead just got to shelves.

>>9558 Definitely this. It's sad, must suck extra bad having this wait for the people who played HL2 on release, I didn't play it until a few years after it came out and now I hate not having a HL3 to wrap it all up.
Also, L4D3. It's my most played PC game since I had steam, but it's kinda dead now and pretty old, it would really benefit from a sequel, and in one hand it looks likely, in the other it looks like valve couldn't give a shit about games any more because "Muh steam machines" which is just sad.
Also, Max Payne. The Max Payne series is my favourite game series of all time. Hell, the original Max Payne was the first PC game I ever played IIRC and I instantly loved it, remember going out on launch day and spending all of my savings to get Max Payne 2 on the PS2 and playing it constantly. 3 got a decent amount of hate, but even though it didn't have the same setting as the original games, I still absolutely loved it and thought it was awesome. I know the story doesn't really have anywhere to go from here and that MP3 didn't sell well, but god damn, I would love it if we had a Max Payne 4.

X had a solid gameplay model for him with the armors, charging weapons, and the new dash ability, but at the same time Zero showed up as a playable character in X3–which was awesome–X stopped growing like he did from X1 to X2, and he became a less desirable character in his own franchise. His armor designs became boring as fuck and split between two armors to four armors, and it wasn't until
X8 that he could finally airdash. That's pretty fucked, and I never liked how Inafune's Zero boner fucked with the X series by the time the X games ended with X8. He's said before that he wanted to revisit the X series, but considering his greatest change to Maverick Hunter X was to add Vile as a playable character, he can go fuck himself.
And for fuck's sake, did they get lazy with the armor designs in the Playstation series. Who gives a shit about choosing between flight and power when you can just unlock the Ultimate Armor in every single goddamn title. Then they decide to just make X more like Zero and give him his saber in X6, complete with matching armor upgrades. Oh, but he can only do one big slow swing that's recycled from Zero's swing move in X4. Absolutely pathetic.

>>12492 Not to mention in X8 X's armors are so god damn bland, it's either a red or a grey(? I can't remember) recolor with a logo tacked on and their powers weren't so interested.
I liked the idea of choosing between power or flight but with X5 they had the stupid idea of having the already powerful Force Armor unlocked from the start and with X6 I'd argue normal X is actually the best because his charge shot is better and because Shadow Armor is gamebreakingly powerful to the point of no fun/

The "armor" shit was stupid as fuck and completely flied in the face of the original concept of upgrades and character progression from the earlier games.
Anonymous 04/09/15 (Thu) 17:57:20 7f8ef3 No. 12498
Speaking of the Force Armor, did anybody ever use the Quad Shot buster upgrade instead of the Plasma Shot? It's fun.
>>12496 They were fun to find and cool to look at, though, and way more rewarding than buying items from a shop. Zero and ZX did that, along with finding data discs, and both were more boring for it. I don't want to feel like I'm playing a hardcore 2D action RPG.
Besides, if X progressed through each game with at least one new ability from his previous armor, that would've accomplished what the Mega Man games did with introducing the charged shot and sliding. That being said, eventually they were going to run out of good armor ideas and decent mechanics, so I wouldn't have minded a divergence from it in favor of building up X's abilities another way. Maybe something like the Z Knuckles or using different weapons.
Anyways, they were just as optional as those items were in the Classic series. You could've even skipped the dash upgrade in X1 if you really wanted to, but you couldn't skip the buster upgrade.

Not saying it was perfect, it did have some problems, like Seal Stones costing wwwaaaaaaaayyy too many gems to buy them all without ridiculous grinding, but also no way to know which ones were really worth buying without a FAQ, and you also needed a FAQ if you wanted to get specific Einherjar. And scaling skill learning based on average party level wasn't very appreciated. But otherwise, I thought it was great and had some excellent ideas I wish other games used more often. Call me crazy, but I found it even more fun than the original, though the first one did have the better story for sure.

Looks beautiful, and the jester villain's got potential and is interesting to pay attention to, but the music is droning and repetitive, the main character's too bland, the first challenges amount to bland fetch quests for simple or obtuse puzzles, and the dialogue is okay at best.
