So here's my attempt to start a level design/environment design thread on 8chan. If you've never tried your hand at it, I invite you to learn something new that will make you an asset to any team. I've tried in on full/v/ but it hasn't worked out, and the ones capable of making anything are limited to few threads. I'll be dumping images from my inspiration folder, if discussion arises and continues I'll eventually dump my own work. My challenge to you is to come up with anything based off of the images I post, or anyone else posts. Ideally, you'd make a small mock up of it in a level editor of your choice (plenty available to you). Alternatively you can make an overhead blue print, and post it for someone else to try. Or if you're an artist, perhaps post environment concepts of your own. Good luck anons, I believe in you. Theme of this post: Abandoned.

If you're not interested in the first challenge either, feel free to talk about your favourite levels in vidya. Your favorite settings for levels. Your least favorites, and so on.

Some nice pics you have there anon, I really suck at level design, I will try something, but will mostly keep an eye in the thread.

As you can all probably tell I like nature a lot, abandoned urban environments, and a mix of both.

Something more like skinwalker story whould take place.

If anyone wants resources on level editor programs I'm happy to direct you to them. If you're interested in learning how to map in a specific engine I'll do my best to help you out.

If you have any past work, pictures of others' work, or pictures from level design from AAA games feel free to post those too.

>>1022 >If anyone wants resources on level editor programs I'm happy to direct you to them I remember seeing photosynth that used tons of pictures on one same location to sort of recreate it in 3D. There is a dotcloud but I don't know just how precise it is and if it could actually help to translate some of these pics into level areas/assets
Anonymous 03/03/15 (Tue) 20:20:20 17fb21 No. 1301
>>1264 There's actually multiple programs that have the same intent. There's a google maps plug that creates a whiteboxed level in Source using the google maps data to analyze an area that's been mapped and recreate the 3D landscape. What you end up with is geometry that simulates the placement/shape/dimensions of the buildings and the streets as well as things like changes in altitude like hills and mountains. You can then work this geometry over however you like, and you end up with a (semi-)realistic depiction of the area depending on your commitment to detail and representation of that area. I saw a guy use this for L4D2 to recreate his town in Source and create a level based around that, with storm clouds that shot down random bolts of lightning in the level, capable of hitting you and the zombies or nothing at all.

I wish I could go urban exploring alone but it's recommended you go with someone else for safety.

Alternatively convert one of your friends to an explorer and explore the old world together.
Might start posting level blueprints iunno

That being said I was hoping to see some more maps in here instead of just /urbex/ stuff. I would like to make a Killing Floor map but am hesitant to do so when KF2 is just around the corner. Hard to find enough time to learn the tools, too.

>>990 OP do you read mangas?, if you do then pick the manga "Blame!" by Tsutomu Nihei.
The architecture is another character in this manga with a really interesting take in the theme of abandoned structures.

I once played with the thought of turning Swallow's Nest (first image) on the Crimea into a TF2 map. I never tried it, mostly because I realized that interesting, curious or beautiful locations do not necessarily make for good gameplay. Or at least not without some heavy concessions that might take away the aesthetic that initially drew you to that location.
Anonymous 03/25/15 (Wed) 07:44:59 2b3972 No. 7243
>>7145 Architecture, but holy hell is 8cham picky about some images here, even when they are under 8mb
I thought i had more, i was going to search but finals are somewhat killing me
Anonymous 03/25/15 (Wed) 08:12:02 17fb21 No. 7256
>>7215 You're right, that a direct representation of real life architecture does not necessarily make good level design. It can however make good environmental design, and the aesthetics seen ITT can be transplanted onto a level with decent level design if they can compliment each other.
You interested in picking up a mapping program anon?
>>7243 Had a feeling it was architecture. That's pretty cool anon.
