> How is the climate toward us in countries besides US/UK/AUS/CAN?
In Germany, it's currently like paedophiles are considered poor buggers who need to be cured – if not of their paedophilia (as paedophilia isn't an illness and can therefore not be cured or something) then of their urge to watch child porn or fuck kids. At least that opinion is mainstream enough to appear openly in the media.
On the other hand, if you live in Germany, you shouldn't tell your neighbours or anyone you're a paedophile: You will probably not be confronted with hatred, but, say, confusion. (They'll be like "WTF a strange person" or something, as if they'd gotten to know their neighbour is schizophrenic or collects weird things or something, but they'll try their best not to show this attitude.)
An interesting aspect of this is what you see when you observe reactions to cases like the Edathy issue, i.e. well-known people (politician in this case) getting caught hoarding child porn or, as it was in this case, material in the legal grey area. The media coverage confronts the public with the existence of people you'd never have thought of they gather child porn (as if you'd think that of anyone), public interest in the topic of paedophilia rises (several people said Mr Edathy needs professional help instead of pending lawsuits), calls for tightening the laws come in, some politician changes the law to calm down the masses (more specifically, his voters), the interest wanes, everything returns to normality. No world-changing discussion has actually taken place. So the public attitude is unlikely to change soon.
Germany is home to "Projekt Dunkelfeld", a scientific investigation into the current situation of paedophilia (and how to mitigate problems caused by it, which mainly means how to tackle paedophiliac-motivated child abuse), and "Kein Täter werden", a psychological reception centre for paedophiles who want professional help. The head of "Kein Täter werden", by the way, once said in one of the talk shows in the wake of the Edathy affair that their investigations and experience have convinced them they're unable to relieve anyone of paedophilia but are indeed able to mitigate problems with getting on with a world that (was it also he who put it this?) cannot concede to paedophiles what they really need.
