/1917/ General Thread

1. No spam.

2. Follow the global rule.

Other than that, this board is going to allow open political discussion. This place is intended to be the opposite of a hugbox.

EDIT january 4: So I created this board in early december which usually sees a drop in users for all boards. Now that we've passed the new year I'm going to work on adding content daily and try to advertise this place some more. My goal isn't to compete with other boards but to create an alternative to /pol/ and /leftypol/ with enough unique ISPs to keep this place visible on the Top 25 board list.

Good news!

I am now the owner of /8pol/ and will be working primarily on that board from now on. I will maintain this board, delete spam, etc but will no longer be advertising or creating content.

I encourage all of you to begin posting on >>>/8pol/

Board FAQ

1. What is the point of this board?

This board exists to encourage free speech discussions that aren't possible on other boards, mostly pertaining to politics.

2. Why did you create this board?

I am an oldfag who found 8chan due to the Gamergate controversy. I loved the idea of a free speech site. Unfortunately, it seems like most people have forgotten why this site was popular in the first place. All the boards are now run as circle-jerks and the mods are absolute cancer. I created this board because, ironically, all the boards on 8chan have turned against free speech.

3. Is this a communist board?

No. It's a board for everyone.

4. Why is it named 1917?

Honestly, I named it this because my other choices were already taken and the site admins never responded to my emails. Plus, Soviet aesthetics are cool.

5. Can I post about non-political stuff?

Yes. In general you can post about anything as long as it isn't spam or illegal according to U.S. law.

6. How do I know you won't turn this into another circle-jerk?

First, I have made all board logs public, which means you can see mod actions without being a moderator. So people will know if mods are abusing power. Second, this board isn't going to push a specific ideology or narrative.

Board log: https://sys.8ch.net/log.php?page=1&board=1917

7. Someone posted something offensive, can you delete it?

No. Here you are allowed to be offensive. If someone shitposts you, you are allowed to shitpost them back. If someone lies, you can expose them.

8. Can we have flags and tripcodes?

No. Flags and tripfags both tend to derail discussions.

9. Where can I complain about something?

Comments, complaints, and suggestions regarding the board can be posted in the /1917/ General Thread.

trouble in tankietown

For those of you who aren't aware, the board owner at /leftypol/ has been shitting up his/her own board for the past few months. In addition, a volunteer revealed that the owner is turning /leftypol/ into a Stalinist circle-jerk that from now on will be a controlled narrative like /pol/.

There seems to be significant disagreement between mods behind the scenes as evident from the ban list.

The /leftypol/ board was actually rising very fast in popularity until the recent drama. In November, the board split between pro-Rojava and anti-Rojava groups. The pro-Rojava group created a splinter board at /leftpol/ which is slowly declining in users.

Q boards

Very strange things happening on 8chan regarding the "q" boards. Supposedly someone named Q has been dropping info on 8chan. What makes all of this very strange is that suddenly a new board is created and within hours has thousands of posts and 900-1500 unique ISPs.

People have posted about this on various 8chan boards but the threads are usually anchored.

I'm not sure what's going on. I personally think that the vast majority of "unique ISPs" on 8chan are fake, and that on any given board there are substantial numbers of bots posting. Who? Why? I don't know.

One possibility is that the site owners deliberately inflating board numbers to make the site more attractive to advertisers. But this is just a guess.

Middle East happenings

Going to dump info on Middle East events here.

The 2003 invasion of Iraq probably was the first time I began to consider the reality of U.S. policy in the Middle East, as well as its causes. The standard leftwing belief was "a war for oil." This seemed possible at the time, but the actions of the U.S. government often indicated that something else was afoot. That was when I first heard of Zionism. In those days a few asserted that U.S. middle east policy, in general, was not to achieve any specific aim but rather to destabilize the region with the ultimate goal of eliminating potential threats to Israel. 15 years later, this theory has not been disproven…

On Communities

I first joined online communities about 15 years ago. If you weren't around to see the internet in those days then you missed one hell of a time. And, I'm sad to say, you probably won't see anything like it for a long time. Back then the narrative wasn't controlled. In fact, there wasn't a narrative at all. The internet was a complete free-for-all shitshow. What happened? Part of it was the inevitable life cycle of communities and the other part was a cultural shift. I'll come back to this in a moment.

Today it's almost impossible to go anywhere on the internet without entering a hugbox. Even communities that were formed to escape censorship eventually degenerate into circle-jerks in which only acceptable opinions are allowed. Is this beginning to sound familiar?

Let me talk for a second about what it was like 15 years ago. The internet as a whole was like a vast untamed continent. The internet was an escape from the conformity of real life. Outside the internet the range of acceptable opinions was very small because those were the only opinions around. But then the internet happened. Anyone with a dial-up connection could create a page on a free webhosting site and post whatever content they wished no matter how unpopular or offensive. People created flash games in which you clubbed seals. Why? Because we were free. And fuck anyone who didn't like it.

After a while a few big online communities established themselves. These communities formed around a mutually shared interest. This could be almost anything. A video game, a political ideology, a tv show, whatever. Later, the community grew based on user-generated content and discussion. Think about that for a second. The real value in these communities was created from the bottom-up. This fact becomes important when we realize why they inevitably fall apart. I'll get to that in a bit.

So, we had these communities forming and growing. And the internet was becoming more popular, which meant this vast untamed continent was now being populated by the same conformist people that existed outside the internet. Eventually a clique forms within the community. And this clique wants to get rid of the trolls and shitposters so we can go back to the good old days of just talking about X. Then the mods within the community, having purged the "trolls", quietly decides to purge anyone who disagrees with them as well. Disagreements cause arguments and arguments distract us from X.

By this point a group of moderators is now fully in charge of the community and the entire dynamic has been changed. The community now goes top-down instead of bottom-up. But even after the mods have taken over it's not always obvious what is happening. The userbase is still booming, new content is still being created, and on the surface everything looks good.

Meanwhile, the point of no return has already been reached. It may take some time, but eventually the creation of new content slows down and the userbase declines. Eventually the community is only visited by the small control clique, and having no discussion to control, the clique itself eventually disbands leaving only an empty platform with no users. All over the net you can find communities that once had hundreds, sometimes thousands, of active users. Today most of these communities are ghost towns.

Now, during the process of decline there is usually an "oh, shit" moment in which the userbase realizes things are beyond repair. This leads to an exodus. The irony is, most communities formed during an exodus will seek to create a safe space for their own persecuted group rather than create a new truly free community. For this reason, most attempts to organize an exodus from a community will fail to establish a new thriving community precisely because they lack the essential freedom required to attract new users.

Now, like I said, part of what changed the internet has to do with the natural life cycle of online communities. The other part has to do with the massive rise in popularity of the internet and a cultural shift. I'll post more on that later.

why is the left dying?

"How is it that the socialist parties of a year ago are now the leading parties of austerity?"

"All of the parties that used to be on the left, who somehow, in their attempt to criticize industrial employers, they don't realize that the industrial employers as well as labor are being parasitized by the financial sector."

"All you have to realize is that there's an immense amount of money coming out of the U.S. government and Wall Street and the Ford Foundation to somehow turn the socialist parties and the left away from what it was 100 years ago. From having an economic program to criticize the rentiers, to tax economic rent, to tax real estate, to put banking into the public domain… all of a sudden to make the focus non-economic topics. Such as you see in the books downstairs. A lot of these are cultural, sexual, the one thing you're not going to see is a discussion of finance. So finance has successfully parasitized most of the left-wing political parties as it has parasitized the industrial economy itself."

Board Update

So this board has been up and running for over a month now. In that time I've added quite a bit of content and intend to add more. Like I said before, if we get lots of traffic - great. If not, great. Ultimately my only goal is to have a free speech board where none of us has to worry about getting banned for simply telling the truth. Can't do that anywhere else.

While my plans for the board remain the same, I have some serious problems with 8chan. According to official board stats we had 24 posts on 1/19. I counted about 5. So the board stats are clearly broken. In addition, the top boards on 8chan have inflated user numbers which keep smaller boards off the main page. Originally I planned to claim a dead board but site admins never responded to my emails. Furthermore, after taking a long look at site history, it is now apparent 8chan began datamining in late 2015 despite Jim denying it. There is also the disturbing fact that someone has the power to delete posts on boards without such deletions appearing in the board logs. Ron was asked about this last month but never responded.

So where does that leave us? I'm going to continue building this board, adding content, and trying to attract users. But, if practical, I will also look into alternatives for us.

EDIT: Yesterday, 1/21/ site admins DID respond to my emails. I'll give an update on this later.

Government Shutdown A Year Into Trump's Presidency

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump campaigned as the master deal-maker, a guy who could come to Washington, knock a few heads and get the government working again. But on the anniversary of Trump's inauguration, America awoke to a government shutdown — a dramatic testament to dysfunction, partisan gridlock and failed leadership.

Turkey Launches Attack On Northern Syria

Turkish war planes have launched air strikes on Kurdish positions in northern Syria, in a move likely to cause tensions with the US. Turkey wants to oust these Kurdish fighters from Syria's Afrin region, which lies near its southern border. It considers them a terrorist group. But some were US allies in the battle against the Islamic State group. Turkey had been shelling the area for two days, ahead of its declaration of a military operation on Saturday.

Zombie retailers close stores nationally, hoping for an online afterlife

Among the bankruptcies of 2017 were those of American Apparel, BCBG Max Azria, Rue21 and Wet Seal. Many were due to declining sales and a heavy debt load as the combined burdens were too much to bear. “Most of the retailers that are struggling still have loyal core consumers,” Brown said. “They just don’t have enough of them. I think that if a brand is a household name, or if it has a positive reputation or brand cachet, it will be a candidate for this (digital focus).

UK retail sales slide in tough December

UK retail sales fell by 1.5% in December compared with November, the biggest monthly fall since the EU referendum, official figures show. For 2017 as a whole, the quantity bought increased by 1.9%, which was the lowest annual growth since 2013. This picture was underlined on Friday when trading updates from Carpetright and clothing chain Bonmarche unsettled investors enough to prompt big share price falls.

Facebook will now ask users to rank news organizations they trust

Facebook unveiled major changes Friday to the News Feed of its 2 billion users, announcing it will rank news organizations by credibility based on user feedback and diminish its role as an arbiter of the news people see. The move comes after the company endured harsh criticism for allowing disinformation to spread on its social network and for favoring liberal outlets over conservative ones.

Amazon raises price of Prime memberships by 20%

The company is announcing on Friday that the Amazon Prime monthly fee is increasing from $10.99 to $12.99 in the U.S., an increase of 18 percent. The new price works out to nearly $156 a year. The increase comes less than two years after Amazon first introduced the monthly payment option as a way to attract new Prime members who either couldn’t afford the annual membership of $99 (which is not increasing), or didn’t want to commit to using the service continuously.

Political Spectrum

ITT we discuss political spectrum models

I have always hated the 2D political spectrum charts, but have seen few other potentially useful models of identifying political orientation. I like Jung's personality trait testing, which operates on more dimensions and does a better job of nailing down people's unique attributes. Of course, the downside to a complex model is the risk of being too specific and too fractionated. Just ask anons on /leftypol/ to tell you their political orientation and you'll get 100 different political identities plus Stirner fags acting like calling everything a "spook" is a useful way to develop a system of law. What do you anons think about the 2D spectrum? Are there other models you like better?

It's been well over 70 years since the last big war, a fight for actual survival. We all know that it's in mankind's DNA to fight with one another since it encourages growth, stability, maturity, and is just healthy for us as a means to check the population. But ever since The Long Peace has started we've seen a huge increase in mental disorders and people confused to what gender they are or if they are even human at all. Even the men of any civilization you look at have become weak and have grown softer with every generation while the women are literally going insane because of it. Mainly in the Western world.

Do we need another war to remove the shelter for these mentally incapable people, to let us develop once more as is the natural order had been for thousands of years? Or should we learn to adapt to this new way of existence, to live without violence? Is there a way to promote the growth wars have given us without bloodshed?
