So, what Touhou game should I play first? I vaguely remember seeing some guide a while back, but can't find it anywhere. Should I start from the very first, or is it better to start with 7 or 8?

6 is the game that most people play first.

I'd also say to start with six. You definitely shouldn't start with the first as it's a completely different style of game to the rest of the series.

There's nothing wrong with the other PC98 games if you want to be thorough, but the sixth game (which was the first for PC) is where most of the well known characters start to come into it, as well as some of the more important gameplay features.

If you really want to start from eh beginning, you could try highly responsive to prayer, but all the PC-98 games are jank as fuck.

6 and 7 are clunky by todays standard.

6 or 7 is a good place to start. 7 if 6 is kicking your ass too hard.

Don't start with 8 it builds really bad death bomb habits since the timing is excessively lenient.

I recommend Ten Desires. It's easy although mistakes are more punishing with only one or two extra lives per run thanks to how the spirit system works.

On the other hand, you have the Trance system as an alternative to bombs.

That's if you want something easy. I started with EoSD, and I recommend you do the same for knowing how to feel a hitbox.
