A good stick (like N64/PS1 stick or arcade quality stuff, perhaps an old Atari or Amiga stick) or a dpad as rigid as the NES or similar would be a good substitute for KB.

Avoid "sticky" dpads like the ones on PlayStation/Xbox controllers, it's a joke to even try to play something like this on that, i sometimes wonder why gems like gradius are developed for those... Disgusting. Anyway the tackier they are the better as you get more control on your movement. Avoid slippery sticks, having it move at a certain unwanted direction will spell your death.

And, sorry, din't actuallt answer your question, i only use KB because my adapter for controllers broke years ago and even though i do have a replacement for it, i just got used to KB controls, i sometimes have problems with controllers and directions since my left hand isn't as fast.

I use a keyboard.

I can beat Lunatic with a pad, but I'm definitely more comfortable with a keyboard. It's what I've played with my whole life.

Stay away from sticks.

I'm using a mac keyboard I inherited bc macs are so fucking retarded they don't work with their own keyboards. The flat keys are more responsive than a stock pc keyboard, but fucking horrible for normal use. My hands constantly get lost because all the keys have not texture.
