Secret Service, FBI Investigating Letter With White Powder Sent to Donald Trump's Son

The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York is leading the investigation into a letter containing a suspicious white powder that was sent to one of Donald Trump's sons.

The task force has also teamed up with the Secret Service, the Postal Inspector and the NYPD.

A preliminary field test of the powder sent to Eric Trump's New York City apartment Thursday indicated the substance did not appear hazardous, according to the source who was briefed on the matter.

The NYPD confirmed to ABC News it responded to a call at Trump Parc East, a high-end residential building on Central Park South, but the department did not identify the recipient of the letter as Donald Trump's 32-year-old son, who has an apartment in the building. (The Trump Organization source, however, confirmed the letter was indeed sent to the real estate mogul's son's apartment.)

The NYPD said, "At approximately 7:15 p.m., the NYPD responded to a residential building at 100 Central Park South to investigate a report of a suspicious letter received by a tenant. The letter has been removed and is being examined by law enforcement authorities. No injuries have been reported in connection with this incident."

The letter carried a Boston postmark. When Lara Trump, Eric's wife, opened the letter in their kitchen, white powder fell out, according to the source briefed on the matter.

The handwritten note said: "If your father does not drop out of the race, the next envelope won't be a fake." It was signed "X."

A source briefed on the investigation told ABC News that U.S. Secret Service protection only extends to Donald Trump at the moment.

There were briefings given to the entire Trump family which included a review of how to properly handle mail, according to the source.

Protocol demands that Trump security personnel call local police, which in this case was the NYPD, with any emergency. In this particular situation, the NYPD immediately notified U.S. Secret Service and both groups are still investigating the letter.

Out of an abundance of caution, the NYPD checked other known Trump locations, including Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.

John Cohen, a former acting Homeland Security undersecretary and current ABC News consultant, said the visibility of the New York businessman’s children on the campaign trail likely turned them into targets.

"The Trump campaign has been very visible, has been described by a number of people as being divisive, and just as we have seen strong actions by his supporters, law enforcement would expect strong reactions from his detractors," Cohen said.

"Unfortunately, in the time we're living in, that could also mean the potential for acts of violence against the candidate and those associated with the candidate,” he said.

Cohen does not believe there is a direct link between the letter and the hacking of some of Trump's files by the hacktivist group Anonymous, noting that the sender and the group may have similar motivations but it's "unlikely that they worked together."

I am no American history buff, but has a candidate ever gotten this much hatred by the media and certain factions of the public for simply running?

I don't think so. I told an acquaintance that I support Trump and they went into hysterics. Name-dropping Trump without adding "smh" after the fact is trolling on easy mode; many people literally believe he's Hitler incarnate.

I'm not surprised in the least. Like I said before, there's so much money at stake here and that, I believe, is where a lot of these attacks are coming from.

For decades American companies have paid peso-tier wages to illegal immigrants to make American dollars, if that wall goes up and the availability of illicit labor is strained that means they have to pay their workers a competitive wage. American companies that use ostensible slave labor from south of the border or the far east will face huge tariffs as well and might even have to consider domestic manufacturing to effectively have access to the 320million-strong American consumer market.

I can't see people voting for Hillary versus him. People hate Hillary.

Australia has a huge left-wing bias, with many right wing governments being elected in recent years, so I know the sort of kvetching that goes on if neo-cons get elected in.

If Trump makes it, get read for their cry bully psychological tactics and unfunny 'satire' for the next four years.

Not really. The average schmo is going to vote for Hillary because the media tells them that Trump is a bad guy.

Another thing worth mentioning is the heroin trade would be stymied by stronger borders as well. Just a shit load of money people stand to lose if Trump makes good on any of these proposals.

You're just counting TV. How many people log onto facebook a day? There is a ton of internet splinter-media to consider.

There are almost 3 million members of Occupy Democrats alone on facebook for example.

It's actually quite interesting (and terrifying) when you consider just how not 'radical' Trump is, and he's getting this response (from both his supporters, but doubly so from his detractors).

But it's because of what he symbolises. His rhetoric is quite lukewarm and could be much 'worse' when it comes to economic protectionism and immigration, yet the powers that be do not even want 'lukewarm'. They want the opposite direction. The neo-cons would like the cheap labour, and the left would like to destroy what is the 'norm'. Cultural Marxism isn't even a 'conspiracy theory' any more, there are literal, self-described Marxists and socialists that wish to destroy the family, and they see white, straight, men as the personification of the evil 'family' they wish to destroy.

I'm not saying all of this to do the whole victim mentality; that's what they want from us. And that avenue is closed to us. I'm saying it to be predictive of the direction society is heading in.

To Trump's detractors credit, he is poor at getting his point across, is very rude, and he's so vague (not to mention has gone back on his word at times) that you can hardly tell what he's thinking and I'm at least 85% sure he doesn't know the first thing about the political process. Even though what he's saying isn't hugely controversial (iirc more blacks and hispanics support him than the other candidates despite whatever "racist" shit he supposedly said), his campaign is definitely bringing out the worst in some of the low-information voters of both sides (like you said, particularly from his detractors) because at this point they're both projecting their biggest hopes and worst fears onto the motherfucker.

Wonder if what Carson said is true, about the 'two Trumps'.

If it's not he's going to piss off every other leader and politician if he gets in.

Also this. He has to stop acting less like the dark horse candidate and more like a businessman. Not a cock-sucking politician, but I'm rather tired of hearing about his hotel chains and university every time he makes a tour stop. He should start talking about his economic policies in a little more detail when he gives press conferences.

>He should start talking about his economic policies in a little more detail

inb4 he doesn't have one

I read somewhere that he might be being vague so he can adapt it later, and doesn't want to make promises he can't keep.

Though I reckon his economic policy is probably to funnel money into his businesses and self until everything is fucked and he's rich as shit. Which I would love to see. He would be like Littlefinger but really fat.

I've only watched a few Trump rallies, but all three of them have followed the same forrmula. He talks for half an hour about how great he is, he throws some protesters out, and finally, if there's time left, he might expound a bit on his platform.

I suppose that he doesn't need to be very detailed, though. Promising to build a wall and promising to slap a 35% tariff on imported Chinese goods is reason enough to vote for him.
