Researcher illegally shares millions of science papers free online to spread knowledge

A researcher in Russia has made more than 48 million journal articles - almost every single peer-reviewed paper every published - freely available online. And she's now refusing to shut the site down, despite a court injunction and a lawsuit from Elsevier, one of the world's biggest publishers.
For those of you who aren't already using it, the site in question is Sci-Hub, and it's sort of like a Pirate Bay of the science world. It was established in 2011 by neuroscientist Alexandra Elbakyan, who was frustrated that she couldn't afford to access the articles needed for her research, and it's since gone viral, with hundreds of thousands of papers being downloaded daily. But at the end of last year, the site was ordered to be taken down by a New York district court - a ruling that Elbakyan has decided to fight, triggering a debate over who really owns science.
"Payment of $32 is just insane when you need to skim or read tens or hundreds of these papers to do research. I obtained these papers by pirating them," Elbakyan told Torrent Freak last year. "Everyone should have access to knowledge regardless of their income or affiliation. And that’s absolutely legal."
journal subscriptions have become so expensive that leading universities such as Harvard and Cornell have admitted they can no longer afford them. Researchers have also taken a stand - with 15,000 scientists vowing to boycott publisher Elsevier in part for its excessive paywall fees.
"They feel pressured to do this," Elbakyan wrote in an open letter to the New York judge last year. "If a researcher wants to be recognised, make a career - he or she needs to have publications in such journals."
The site works in two stages. First of all when you search for a paper, Sci-Hub tries to immediately download it from fellow pirate database LibGen. If that doesn't work, Sci-Hub is able to bypass journal paywalls thanks to a range of access keys that have been donated by anonymous academics (thank you, science spies).
This means that Sci-Hub can instantly access any paper published by the big guys, including JSTOR, Springer, Sage, and Elsevier, and deliver it to you for free within seconds. The site then automatically sends a copy of that paper to LibGen, to help share the love.
Last year, a New York court delivered an injunction against Sci-Hub, making its domain unavailable (something Elbakyan dodged by switching to a new location), and the site is also being sued by Elsevier for "irreparable harm" - a case that experts are predicting will win Elsevier around $750 to $150,000 for each pirated article. Even at the lowest estimations, that would quickly add up to millions in damages.
But Elbakyan is not only standing her ground, she's come out swinging, claiming that it's Elsevier that have the illegal business model.
"I think Elsevier’s business model is itself illegal," she told Torrent Freak, referring to article 27 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, which states that "everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits".
She also explains that the academic publishing situation is different to the music or film industry, where pirating is ripping off creators. "All papers on their website are written by researchers, and researchers do not receive money from what Elsevier collects. That is very different from the music or movie industry, where creators receive money from each copy sold," she said.
Elbakyan hopes that the lawsuit will set a precedent, and make it very clear to the scientific world either way who owns their ideas.
"If Elsevier manages to shut down our projects or force them into the darknet, that will demonstrate an important idea: that the public does not have the right to knowledge," she said. "We have to win over Elsevier and other publishers and show that what these commercial companies are doing is fundamentally wrong."
To be fair, Elbakyan is somewhat protected by the fact that she's in Russia and doesn't have any US assets, so even if Elsevier wins their lawsuit, it's going to be pretty hard for them to get the money.

Topic One: Building An Independent Intelligence Cell
This should be the most important part; and is really the most dangerous part of any intelligence operation. Anyone who comes into your cell could potentially be a double agent; but there are ways to mitigate this risk. First: You should always leave yourself a space of deniability. This is a meeting place where no digital devices are allowed and any incoming and outgoing traffic/surrounding area traffic can be monitored by physical observation. Innawoods is obviously a good idea; but infrastructure is important too. (Faraday Cages work wonders in this as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage for the kikepedo article on it. This principle can be used to build a Faraday Cage in your Central Area of Operations Management aka CONTROL.) This is paramount: no one should know about the location of this space but high level agents in the cell, and CONTROL itself.
If you're building a cell; make yourself CONTROL; if you're getting into a cell, make sure you follow the directives of CONTROL. Be forewarned; operational security on CONTROL is paramount to a cell's success. CONTROL *must* have management skills and keep abreast of ALL operations engaged by that cell. So, if your CONTROL is a shit; you may just get boned. (It should come with an understanding that you're engaging in espionage; things will eventually go bad, plan accordingly.) In theory; this would allow several anons to form cells, those cells to communicate with each other through cut outs/dead drops and potentially begin to rival our suited friends in at least organization and secrecy.
Okay; so you've got yourself a base of operations that no one else knows about, and maybe a few agents to help you do something. Now to gear up.
Cameras are the biggest thing, cameras of all sizes and shapes. For a small cell, I'd suggest getting at least one digital SLR type camera for hi-res shots of buildings, people and other things. These can be carried inconspicously by someone acting as a tourist if you live in a major city; or as a birdwatcher if you're in a national/state park. (Bear in mind; that with the new antiterrorism laws active in most places, you may be subject to a search for this kind of thing if you are shit at talking your way out of inquiry.) Keep two sd/CF/etc cards for this camera. One for operations relevent photos, one you can switch out that contains more mundane photos of touristy type shit. Everyone's broke right now; so tourism dollars will generally be left alone in order to not scare anyone off.
Get a few smaller hi-res cameras or other recording/surveilance devices as well.

So, I'm not really invested in the elections, but something really fucked went down last night.
There was a battle (politically speaking, of course) over the state of Iowa between several candidates: Marco Rubio, Trump, and some others. It was revealed that Microsoft would be providing the ballots and cloud-based software, namely Microsoft Azure, that is used for counting the votes.
I'm sure there are already alarm bells ringing in your head.
It was also revealed that Microsoft has actually funded Rubio's campaign, along with some other candidate whose name escapes me. So, we had a private corporation with a clear political leaning providing ballots and vote counting for this particular vote, in which one of the candidates is someone they're supporting.
You're damn right some shit went south.
At the pace Rubio's campaign has been going, the results didn't really add up. Rubio gained 10% of the vote out of thin air that night.

Operation Steadfast Impact
Seeing as we're a wetwork board, I think it's time for our first operation. The target is one of the major fortresses of SJW power on the internet, SRS.
The plan is to have a group of four or five operators infiltrate the SRS userbase and work up the ranks to mod positions, paving the way for other operatives to gain mod positions. This operation is expected to last a year to a year and a half.
As you can see, this is similar to SRS tactics so we have to be especially careful. Operatives will also be directed by an operation director and will not know the other members of the operation in case of enemy infiltration.
I want to know of there is interest in this operation. If you want it, provide a way to contact and it would preferable if you had experience.
Before you ask, operation name was chosen by an online generator because we have no operation name creation guidelines. MGS style codenames for operatives optional but appreciated.

A friend of mine (another /pol/ack) decided recently to start an anti-facist group with the sole intention of creating in-group fighting, spreading misinformation, and infiltrating the upper TORCH network.
Let me tell you what I currently know about the TORCH network.
TORCH is headed up by the NYC anti-fa group, but was previously run by the Philadelphia anti-fa group.
TORCH groups are "bound" into contract by a group of commandments known as the "seals." They basically dictate the actions of the members (don't be sexist, racist, ect).
TORCH groups rely on the buddy system to beat down on people during protests. This can be dismantled properly with group counter-tactics, but what is really interesting about this choice is how they plan. TORCH relies on real time tactics not long term strategy, so beating them in the long run should not be hard.
There is a lot of exploitable in group fighting. If used correctly, they can alienate entire other groups, swinging them to our side. The nature of anti-fa basically allows us to have the "moral high ground" and accuse people of instilled biggotry.
