I'm learning Cantonese. Why? Because I can. Post a language in this thread you would like to learn. Then, get out there and learn it. Self-improvement is the best improvement, lads and lassies, and since this is a board for refined content and people, let's make an effort to become such.
For those interested in Cantonese, here's the link to a site that covers the essentials:

I'm currently trying to learn as much Italian as I can, since I'm living over there right now. I downloaded the Duolingo app for iPhone, which definitely won't make you fluent in any of the languages they have, but it's a good starting point for basic words and phrases. If anyone's interested in it, they currently have Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Irish, Swedish, and Danish, and usually add a new language every 1-3 months (I'm hoping they add Finnish soon).
No.576
>>574Interested. I'll check this out.
>>468Alright, OP. I'll take you up on that. I'll try learning Russian.

I'm currently trying to refine my Spanish, seeing how highschool had left me with only a rudimentary understanding of it. I'm also dabbling with Rosetta stone for French, so I'm curious how well it'll work. I've heard mixed reviews, but I'm giving it a chance.

I'm learning German, mainly using Duolingo and normal people books. Good stuff. Going to do back to Mandarin when I'm good with Deutsch.

I learned german in highschool, I wasn't fluent but I could understand it perfectly. I never used it again and forget almost every bit of it.
If you do learn a language I suggest you immerse yourself in it every once in a while, maybe visit the country just to make sure you don't forget it.

I'm learning Esperanto, because the simplicity makes it not a large time commitment, and the wide access to various cultures through foreign speakers is incredibly fascinating. I'm not fluent yet but I can understand most writing well enough with a dictionary.

Japanese. Not because I´m a weeb, but because I like how japanese sounds. I´d also like to make subs for those cartoons unfortunate enough not to have them.

I've wanted to learn it for years, and I've finally gotten the motivation.
It's kinda a third language for me.
My mother tongue is english, and I can speak french at a conversational level. ie, I could go to france and be able to talk to people about whatever, but I'm not nearly fluent.
So far I've just been trying to learn kana before I start on words and grammar.
Not too bad so far I guess

Anyone has any material for German? I'm heading there next month for a 2 months course on the language and I want to get there speaking at least some already. I learned both French and English fluently within 4 months so I'm sure I can do the same for German if I study enough.

Just started learning Japanese, simply because it's a bloody awesome language in my humble opinion. I have the Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I textbook, workbook, CDs, and grammar guide, and I think I'm finally ready to plunge in.
I've also taken 2-3 years of French at school, and I'm pretty good with essays, listening, comprehension, etc. but I can't really form sentences on my own. I guess that's the negative side to learning languages in school?

I'm planning on learning Japanese at some point, because I'm a programmer and a gamer, and those are both industries which generally have profitable ties with Japan and it would be very handy if I was able to do business there. My boyfriend and I are also planning on spending some holidays out there at some point.

>>1594I am also of Spanish kin and I must disagree with your statement slightly. Our language is not at fault. It is true the cultural level of our country is rather disheartening, but the language is not at fault, and in fact it is complex and intricate in many tasteful ways. It is the use of our language that the uncultured masses that populate our crestfallen country that irks me the most.
The best iteration of Spanish was the one that our ancestors used in the eighteenth century, bar none. The Spanish Constitution of Cádiz, written at 1812, in my opinion, can sit comfortably there with the Declaration of Independance of the United States as an awe-inspiring show of judgement, steadfast morals and an exquisite grasp on the language each of them was born into.

No.2614
>>2061Hello Mr(s).Anoymous, I would like to encourage you to not be afraid of learning the language, since it is undoubtedly one of the easiest languages to be learned in almost every way. I speak 4 languages, Turkish being one of them. Although I must warn anyone aspiring to go to through the arduous task of learning Russian, cause that language is unbelievably difficult in every aspect. I still haven't mastered it despite being living in a country where Russian is the main language for over 6 years.
Good luck to everyone on their endeavours.

I want to learn Esperanto! Then maybe "graduate" to Russian, once I've wrapped my head around the sounds of the letters. Esperanto uses the same sounds as Russian does, see; married to a regulated vocabulary rooted mostly in Castillan.
I have a wealth of historical Esperanto materials, including an early edition of the Esperanto dictionary that uses the cyrillic alphabet. Super rare!
My dream would be to translate Plato's "Laws" and Hobbes's "Leviathen" into Esperanto.
