Not Cigarettes, Not e-cigarettes, not "vaping"
Just a good old fashioned pipe and some tobacco.
I find it very methodical and relaxing, like a form of meditation. There's a right way to do it and when you finally get it, the feeling is one of a kind.
It's definitely not something you do while doing something else, either. It's a sort of activity unto itself. You can still hold a conversation or watch a movie or something, but I'm not going to play a videogame while smoking my pipe.

Smoking pipes and cigars eventually turned me into an addicted cigarette smoker.
I stopped smoking altogether after 9 years, about 4 years ago, but smoking a good pipe is the only thing I really miss.
If I weren't so easy to fall for addiction I'd pick it up again without a second though.
No.518
>>514Unlike most smokers I started much much later in life. Never touched any form of tobacco until my late 20s and even then, I started with a pipe out of fascination with the classy aspect of it. I'm kind of a gentleman like that.
Now it's something I only do on special occasions or when the mood really strikes me. Going weeks at a time between use really curtails any possible addictive issues.

I find smoking a pipe to be very difficult due to time reasons. These days, one must be outside at all times when smoking a pipe. I rarely find myself outside for extended periods of time; especially in the winter.
No.570
>>566That is something of a benefit for it, though. It reduces frequent use and makes the times that you do get to sit down and smoke a bowl a little bit more meaningful.

I've been smoking pipe for the last 2 years or so and have found myself liking it less and less. I enjoy the taste and the aroma, though I only smoke alone and it makes me think about the current state my life is in and what ill be doing in the future.
Growing up sucks man…

My father used to smoke a pipe for a few months when I was about 11 or 12 and I remember it fondly. It was pretty good tobacco too, and I used to sit next to him just to smell it. Lately I've wanted to take his old pipe and start myself, but I've never smoked anything before and while I really want to do it, I just can't force myself over that line. Is it really worth it?

>>513wow man. deep post there. I have a pipe and some tobacco, but I'm not sure how much I like it. I bought an ounce the full English blend from the cigar store. I'm not sure how much I like it though. I'm not too crazy about the taste. plus it's a pain to keep the stuff lit in the pipe anyway.

>>691>>692I had originally typed fa ggot, because it was an act of fa ggotry that drew me to smoking a pipe. It's as good a reason as any, and still less costly than cigarettes or weed and less retarded than vaping.
>>694I've got a vanilla blend that I bought with the pipe that's really nice. Fills the room with a pleasant scent that's not too pungent or overwhelming.
As for keeping it lit, that's something that comes with practice. Keeping your pipe properly cleaned, packed in just the right way, and figuring out the right rhythm of drawing in and puffing out is all part of the ritual.

Now here I thought I had finally found my opium pipe smoking thread…

>>566Why are people so obsessive and uptight about smoking indoors? I get that if you are chain smoking cigarettes all day every day your interiors can get smelly and gross but there are occasions when smoking indoors is the classy thing to do.

>>714It's funny because unlike cigarettes cigars and pipes usually produce of a perfume odor, but due to the whole "tobacco smells awful" propaganda spread around people form that opinion without even analyzing themselves.
I don't understand why you would want to smoke a cigar in the freezing rain, a cigar isn't a big deal and rain is unpleasant.

>>733some cigars are pretty rank to be honest, also some people are just gentlemans. and society seems keen on supporting their bullpoppycock, or at least tolerating it. which is how the halfwit(s)'s got as much tout as they do now.

Personally, I think it's only worth it to smoke with someone. Since all my friends have quit, I have found myself not doing it quite as often.

Unfortunately, the way a lot of people smoke pipes, it winds up being an easy way to get squamous cell carcinoma. Don't let the pipe rest on the roof of your mouth, always hold it in your hand.
No.2183
>>765Agreed, no need for 'gentlemanliness', a fine cigar stands as it's own reason to smoke it. Pair it with a glass of wine, and let the comfiness wash over you.

I've played with the idea of smoking a pipe. However, I do not know how to use one. Do I have to keep lighting up the tobacco everytime I want to take a hit? That aspect alone may turn me off to it. Seems like a waste of matches.
No.2326
>>2319http://www.smokingpipes.com/information/howto/packing.cfmIf you do it right, the bowl is supposed to stay lit. Additionally, you're not supposed to take a hit. It's more of a slow puff. You're supposed to taste it, more or less, not fill your lungs.

There is a pipe store where I live that gives out a free bowl of pipe tobacco every time you go in. There is a lounge with leather chairs in the back with complementary coffee and cookies. The guys who run it are the most chill and interesting men I have ever met. I once asked for Perique blend, and as the guy checked me out he told me about how Conan Doyle's favorite blend was Perique, and how Sherlock used it as a clue in one of his many cases.
The last time I was in there, I was talking with the manager about my education. Upon hearing I was majoring in Anthropology, he told me that the head of our state's historical society comes in and hangs out in the lounge every now and then, and is a personal friend. In addition, he said the next time the head of the historical society was in he would put in a good word for me.
Slightly off topic, but still relevant.
Generally when I smoke my pipe (churchwarden) I head out to the country and go for a walk as I do. Finding a place next to a stream is great, as is a copse of trees.
Its a type of communion in its own right. I can't explain it, but if you have ever been in nature staring at the sky while enjoying a bowl of pipe tobacco you know what I'm talking about.

>>2396That store sounds amazing and I wish any of the tobacco stores in my area were even half as cool as that place. Unfortunately, being anywhere within a thousand mile radius of Chicago guarantees that you only get the scummy stores run by swarthy middle eastern men who speak broken english and keep a gun visible to all customers to ward off any potential robberies.
Last time I went to see if my local stores had any pipe tobacco, the only thing they could offer was a dusty corncob pipe that must have been sitting around for years, originally bought as decoration or something.
No.2570
>>2377Depends. If you actually inhale the smoke (which you shouldn't), you're no better off than with cigs. If you don't inhale, it's roughly as dangerous as smoking cigars, in no small part due to the fact that you generally smoke less cigars or pipes per day than you would smoke cigarettes.
That being said, pipe smoking drastically increases the risk of laryngeal cancer and other diseases related to the mouth cavity.
As far as it concerns addiction, I think pipe smoking is less addictive than smoking cigarettes, presumably again because you simply can't smoke as many pipes as you could smoke cigarettes.
No.2580
>>2570It's certainly harder to go through the whole process of packing, smoking, and cleaning a pipe than it is to simply slip a cigarette from its pack and light up with only moments of prep.
Smoking a pipe reminds me of that King of the Hill episode where Hank Hill talks about finding your lawn, almost like a religious concept; Having a sort of ritual or methodical practice that requires your full attention, but at the same time, empties your mind.
Smoking a cigarette is just nothing like that. It's just simply a habit or a fixation for most people, instead of an activity unto itself.
No.2632
>>2580Agreed. I mean smoking is still unhealthy to some extend, be it in the form of cigs, cigars, or pipe, but the latter two are not something you can do on the spot, i.e. if waiting for a bus, nor it is something you
need to do for your fix.
It probably is a good way to get your mind of things, to actually relax.

I also enjoy the elegant feel of pipes over the shape and texture of cigarettes. The many shapes and kinds call to me far stronger than the simple aesthetic of a cigarette or cigarillo.
