If someone could explain this to me I would be grateful. Why couldn't the alliance fleet just go around the Iselhorn Corridor? I know that they said it would require them to go around the entire galaxy, but why couldn't they have gone as in the third pic. Also during the battle for the Iselhorn corridor everybody complained that it was too narrow, we even see a ship hitting some sort of invisible wall, what was that wall? Why is a corridor surrounded by space narrow?
No.402589
>>402583
The invisible wall is space magic, there really isn't anything to try to explain. As to why they couldn't go like pic 3, it's because you'd bump into the space wall. The only places where you won't do that are through the the Phezzan or Iserlohn corridors.
No.402590
>>402583
aside from obviously being a plot device to make iserlohn and phezzan important, it's heavily implied the areas outside the spiral 'arms' of the galaxy are impassable for ships except at those two places.
I don't think there's any known reason in our real galaxy that would be true, but then again, it's not like we'd know if there was.
there may be more corridors, but neither side probably felt like tossing ships at empty space until they found another safe route (it was stated that more than half of the fleet that fled the empire to found the alliance was destroyed just trying to find iserlohn)

However, if someone wanted to kill Reinhard in order to destabilise the Empire, why would they make it look like an accident? If it had been the FPA, Goldenbaum sympathizer, or the Earth Cult they would have benefitted from the subsequent turmoil. I can't imagine somebody like Mittermeyer, Oberstein or Bittenfeld wanting Reinhard dead. Perhaps Reuenthal? The usual suspect in these cases is the heir apparent (which is a baby) or Hilda, which however clearly loved Reinhard.

watched golden wings. man that animation style is totally different. Yang look's completely different and more like an asshole than the lovable sighing commander I know from the anime and first movie. Reinhard looks like a dweeb, and the homosexual tensions between Kircheis and Reinhard are insane.
I mean, there was plenty of homosexual-ish-ness between the two in the anime don't get me wrong, plus with Reinhard and Emil, but even then I figure he never had a childhood and the members of his family were so small that he hardly knew how to express his love other than in the way he did. So it was fine and in character, but damn, the hair flicking and petting in Golden wings has my faggot-meter off the charts.
Attenborough looked totally different too, not to mention the uniforms of the imperials. At first I thought it was just because they were wearing trainning uniforms or something, but nope, seemed like they had just plain-stripped-ish uniforms that were ridiculous looking in comparison to the prussian inspired ones.

I have my own theory on this. Assassination. The most likely culprit, Oberstein.
Now you might ask why? It's a frequent incidence in history that the founder of a state is "sacrificed" in order to entrench the state in a martyr mythos. The ruler is raised to godhood, a state cult of personality surrounds him. This is especially important for maintaining the succession of dynastic and autocratic rule. There is evidence that examples of historical figures whom this fate befell included Moses, Joan of Arc, Romulus, Caesar, Charlemagne, Sun Yat Sen, Lenin, Che Guevara.
Now Oberstein was a man incredibly versed in theory of the deep state, so it's quite probable that he saw the establishment of the new hereditary dynasty as the absolute goal of his career. The means by which a stable succession to the monarchy could be obtain was to remove the last obstacle, its founder.
Reinhard was to be elevated to the status of a Martyred God, eternally young and beautiful, thus eliminating whatever causes for hate and moral baggage he might've carried along in the course of his rise to absolute dominion (like Westerland).
What was the state of the Lohengramm dynasty at the time of Reinhard's death? Since Kircheis, Yang, Reuenthal were also dead (spoiler alert so fuck me) the main political rivals that could threaten the galactic order have been eliminated. The rest were simply not competent or charismatic enough to solicit factional following. The only person of merit remaining is Mittermeyer, a stable man serving as a key pivot of the state. He could keep the military in check and provide authority behind the female Kaiser, without ever threatening to usurp power for himself.
There were practical reasons as well. The new bureaucracy established by Reinhard doesn't want a strong willed autocrat to intervene in their power structure. A pliable and reasoned figure like Hilda would be much easier to compromise (reflecting a oligarchic system).
Finally the military's power and might, had to be curtailed. The military must serve the state, not a particular person. Yet Reinhard embodied the military, and in many ways they were bound only to his persona.
A slow acting poison was placed into Reinhard's meals (which explains his aversion to food), likely with the knowledge of Streit and other royal guards. He lived long enough to accomplish his goals, but not a day longer than it was necessary for the human side of him to show to the public.
Finally, one more problem remained - Oberstein. Realizing that as long as he had lived, the admirals would never be satisfied, he had orchestrated his own "heroic" demise in defense of the nation. Thus he too would be entombed at the side of the founder of the state. As an act of ultimate self sacrifice, it shows how Oberstein doesn't hesitate to use his own life as a pawn for his political ends. Absolute fucking genius.
Of course this is all speculation so you might as well just happily dismiss it as bullshit. And it might be for the best.

I don't remember >>409091 or the father of emil like >>417430 but I would say water tasting weird is like going to different counties or states where water tastes different. That's normal, or Yang could have been speaking metaphorically about not drinking the same type of kool aid as reinhard in a sense (they were talking about democracy vs imperialism at the time iirc)
I know in the later episodes Oberstein often said he was in service of the dynasty not of the emperor, so the theory does have some weight there. But still, I got the sense that Oberstein felt that there was still plenty more for Reinhard to do, after all, wouldn't raising his son to share the same values as him be better for the reich? Rather than leave it to just hilda and mittermeyer's family?

De Villiers says something interesting just before Julian guns him down. He says the Lohengramm dynasty has a lot more enemies than the Terra Church. I assume he meant remnants of Westerland's population, disgruntled nobility, ambitious military officers, Phezzani merchants, republicans, or even the technocratic bureaucracy. This is another reason why I hate Julian. If he was more patient, he would have handed Villiers over to Kessler. Since De Villiers was the sect leader, not a fanatic follower or a drugged cult member willing to die, it's likely "conventional" methods of interrogation would have proven effective in yielding a treasure trove of information from him.
No.420739
>>420689
Yeah but Julian doing that would be out of character for him. Even though he grew up a bit and did a lot of leading and having of responsibility for the iserlohn free republic he was still never meant for it. Nearly all of his decisions were just him thinking about what Yang would do, and most of these he could take in time on the bench that Yang used to sit on.
Julian, while a good person, wasn't as intelligent or wise as Yang was and lacked his patience and vision among other things. It's his short-sightedness that ultimately dooms De Villers.
If they had interrogated him, what do you think they would have discovered? I mean, who armed the Terra Cult for the attack? Or let them in? Or what? We know Oberstein leaked the information to them about where the kaiser was, but I doubt he leaked anymore than that, if he had leaked a passageway you can bet that he would have had guards ready in ambush.
Oberstein may have endangered the Kaiser's life using him as bait, but he didn't want him dead.
No.420745

De Villiers claimed he knew something the rest of the cast didn't about potential enemies of the Lohengramm dynasty. It's more than likely that having pulled the strings over Phezzan for his entire life, he obtained a thorough who's who of powerful imperial nobles and the Phezzani plutocracy.
Again to reiterate, who was Reinhard? He was first and foremost a rebel. His "revolution" could be seen as nothing but an overthrow of older, hereditarily entrenched aristocracy by younger, ambitious, aggressive and competent officer class.
Obviously this arrangement would displease many, especially power brokers outside the military complex. For one, Reinhard's insistence on social justice and economic fairness probably wouldn't sit well with the Phezzani merchant class, who are used to a privileged position in the galaxy, something they want to retain at any cost. Second, the republicans he placed in key posts of his government demand their own institutional spheres of authority, without interference from a plenary autocrat. Since Reinhard tended to deal with any problem by throwing his fleets at it, a direct confrontation with a non-traditional opponent would have likely sundered the new Reich apart. We all know how poorly Reinhard's entire military machine fared in a non-standard conflict.
A more moderate, stable, compromising ruler would have turned to sound politics and legislature to slowly reform the society over the course of generations. Reinhard, who made a career on decisive, sweeping decisions was not suited to be such a leader, and furthermore he didn't want to be such a figure in the first place.
That is why Reinhard was an obstacle to the stability of the new social order. If he were to live he had to evolve either into a constitutional monarch, i.e. a ceremonial doll with no real say on the way the state is run, or employ and embody the talents of individuals such as Truniht, for whom an authoritarian sovereign state was the natural swimming water so to speak.
When epic space battles were replaced with byzantine bureaucratic intrigue it wouldn't have been so much Legend of the Galactic Heroes then as Legend of the Galactic Hillaries. I guess I'm glad that the show ended on that note.

>It's more than likely that having pulled the strings over Phezzan for his entire life, he obtained a thorough who's who of powerful imperial nobles and the Phezzani plutocracy.
It seemed like they ran out of resources at the end. Most of the cult had been eradicated and many were doubtful the grand wizard (or whatever the guy was called I'm blanking on it) was even alive. It seemed like most of their connections were through baldy, and after he exploded they didn't have him in their camp anymore, so not much power there. They were desperate at the end, and for a group who had basically been a shadow group pushing intelligence and terrorism, the last move they made really showed how far they had fallen. To take the bait like that tells you that they were disorganized I think.
>For one, Reinhard's insistence on social justice and economic fairness probably wouldn't sit well with the Phezzani merchant class
When Reinhard duped the Phezzani, the reason the merchant took the deal was because he wanted money, and as long as Phezzan was in control of that they were happy, or at least the leaders were. You have to remember that they were able to travel in both imperial and alliance space for the last 500 years with no issue since they were neutral, until Reinhard broke through the corridor they had never had imperial's in their airspace. But were used to going through it. So once Reinhard takes over nothing actually changed for them. My point is that the privileged position you speak of is one that they still retained and were aware of. Reinhard's "economic fairness" seemed to only have the effect of de-throning the nobels, it didn't do anything to a merchant unless they were corrupt. I'd like to think that most Phezzani were honest merchants.
>Reinhard dealted with problems by throwing his fleet at it
Tended to sure. But we did see that he could create legistlature and do that type of ruling, it just bored him horribly since it didn't give him a rival. In the case of civil issues that didn't involve corrupt nobels, he delegated / took Hilda's advice most of the time.
I do agree about Reinhard losing a purpose once he had created his new government, he could rule it of course, but without Kircheis he really had no desire to it seemed. I mean, he had Hilda but even then, he made the promise to Kircheis, not Hilda and we all know that Reinhard loved Kircheis and their friendship ran deeper than Hilda's surprise pregnancy and Reinhard's 14-yr old style autism
Have you watched Gaiden anon? It really goes into more detail on Reinhard's personality and motivations I think. Or at least provides more depth and context into what shaped his life.

Look at a goddamn map, anon. -steins being guaranteed merchants is an american thing. Idar - Oberstein is an actual place in Germany, and "von Oberstein" means "from Oberstein". Oberstein, translated literally, means "stone above" which was also the name of the castle Oberstein, which, unsurprisingly, overlooks the entire town.
There is meaning to Oberstein's character that his name implies as well as many visual cues. He is hard as a rock fortress and weathers any storm and overlooks the entire Empire. Like his mechanical eyes, he is precise and shows no mercy or emotion. Likewise, his grey cape only reinforces his character as a grey cardinal. However, you can't see a single goddamn thing that would even imply that he's a hooknosed merchant of Terra. He's as aryan as it goes with a birth defect that he compensates with utter diligence and devotion to the Empire.

I understand what you're saying, but that's like saying that some parts of the show were convoluted or drawn out. It was an OVA not an actual tv series, it needed to be as long as it needed to be, and the dialogue was derived from a novel rather than a manga like most anime.
I personally think it's god tier for its length with actual substance, it's not as if any episode was useless, each had vital information that continued the story, there were no fillers in each episode and each scene furthered the plot. Different strokes for different folks though

It definitely doesn't fit the mold of a "meme" anime. I'd say since it's so non-memetic that people throw in jokes on purpose for hyperbolic contrast. Like that stupid Kircheis snake head thing or screen caps taken out of context.
There are a number of elements that make this series stand out from the rest, which appeal to a non-anime watching audience.
>characters have realistic, movie like designs, such that you can actually imagine the way they would look like if they were actual human beings.
>most of the cast is adult, male and not excessively sexualized.
>next to no ecchi bullshit
>relationships are portrayed in a more or less mature way, without teenage angst and omega cuckoldry which is a rare feat in Japan anime.
>it deals with many political themes that have clearly ominous parallels to reality. The depiction of the FPA's bumbling ohlocracy is a glass reflection of contemporary politics. The threat posed to democracy by a well organized and willpower driven autocrat is clearly outlined.
I don't want this discussion to stray into /poo/ territory but I come from a country where the lower and middle level social management is public spirited and by large display commitment to the nation's founding values. But when it comes to social elites and the upper leadership, I can say without the margin of a doubt that they are leading the country into ruin. I think a lot of people recognize this situation. That's why the story of the FPA particularly strikes home.
It's not perfect for many reasons. I too disliked much of the later seasons (except the Reuental arc, which was excellent). But for those who follow the decision making process involved in history and politics closely, I reckon there's no series that handles it in a better way.

This. They are in warped space, and the only 1:1 unwarped ratios are at the entry and exit points in solar systems or major gravitational masses (ie a black hole). Go for something other than a 1:1 ratio and you get an effect in physics called "spaghettification" or gravitational shearing, which is how we get the rings of Saturn. I always figured this kind of physics was what was going on and why they had only small areas in which to fight.
Simplified popsci video on the rings here.
