It happens sometimes. Look at Monochrome. They have an entire backstory there involving reincarnation, ancient ayyylmao, O-parts, and the salvation of the earth. But for all intents and purposes it is unnecessary to a show that is basically all about setting up strange situations usually for a punch line.
The short form doesn't lend itself to overarching plots well because the time constraints limit you to either showing what a character did or telling it. It worked in this example because of cultural shorthand associated with the story they are telling, memes basically. They could have just shown her getting frustrated with studying and quitting. But the details like the hair, the lack of progress in her art, the day dream about bragging to her friends all called to mind certain personality types that are endemic to liberal arts and managed to humanize the manager as well as establish the background. At the end of the day we know who she is. A selfish immature opportunist, who is more interested in social standing, money, and ego than art. It's not just that she hates sculptures. She hates the fact they remind her of her failures, and force her to accept responsibility for them. So instead of a flat character that just says they really hate sculptures we have a developed character we can associate with and understand why they are so frustrated and angry.
But don't get it wrong, this will definitely be a gag series, they will just give it a little more meat than most.

The direction is pretty good in this show. It's pretty great how they use various angles to express things for the Sekkou Boys, since they obviously can't move.
What I like the most though, is that none of it is played for laughs at all. The show takes it's premise 100% seriously, but the premise is so utterly absurd that it leads to great meta humor. Things like what >>410123 said, using lime stone for makeup, or the previous manager throwing out his back multiple times, or Medici's booster seat since his bust has a narrow stand-type thing.
Everything about this show is great. Saint Georgia is the best sekkou though. Both in character, and looks.

They do. It's called live modeling. I was an artist so all we did was mostly live modeling. I think we did a sculpture or plastic fruit to learn about shadows but it was mostly nude models to draw and then doing different things with it like make an original character from one of the nude model poses. After that session, we were given some free reign to do original ideas with the basics that we learned.
Still a funny show but it kind of threw me off with what she was saying because my experience was really the exact opposite.
