I'll be watching. I'm not sure if I have enough 大和魂 to truly appreciate it, but we've all gotta start somewhere.

Sure enough, less than thirty minutes after I posted, it released.

Shishou being a massive cunt aside, it was great. I had absolutely no expectations, but this murder(?) mystery, Rakugo, and character drama is interesting. The Dekigokoro scene really did drag on long though. I thought he was going to bomb it, but things turned out well enough. That said, it was still painful to watch, with long stretches of nobody laughing, including myself.

Why was it 50 minutes though? Special premier sort of thing?

Holy shit well DEEN actually can animate. All those Shaft expats must have served them well.

But then this first ep is just eps 1 + 2 of the OVA put together. The real test of quality comes next week when the actual first made-for-TV-ep drops. We'll see if DEEN can keep it up.

Great first ep by the way, I, too, loved the Dekigokoro scene. The VA really knows what the hell he's doing.

Everything worked great in this one, for me. Also it's nice to see more anime starring and targeted at adults.

The humor only goes up to sensible chuckle level to me, but the character investment put me on the edge of my seat during Dekigokoro. Well done.

The arc after that didn't grab me. The protagonist's conflict was supposed to be finding his own style(?) but the immediate crisis was falling asleep and snoring. While it can be justified by the protagonist being exhausted from last minute practice and going on air, previous character development hammered down his respect for his master and interest his watching Rakugo shows. Because of that, falling asleep felt contrived.

I just got to say I loved the heck out of that. My only qualm is the way the Konatsu over reacted which means they might shoe horn in some unnecessary drama. The way the story was structured and the pacing was excellent. The choreography for the performances was fantastic. If they can keep this same tempo throughout the series it should be interesting.

Seems interesting enough. I really like the MC, he's the good kind of beta.

Niggy you are actually so dumb. He didn't expel him because he fell asleep, although he was obviously mad and embarrassed about it. He only used that as justification to do so.

What he was really buttmad about was that he was copying Sukerou's rakugo, and not his. Which makes him a huge cunt because he hasn't taught Yotaro a single thing.

A bit too many dramatic situations and eye-to-eye looks to make fujoshi crowd go wild, but we'll see.

Here's what everyone should do while waiting: watch a dorama from 2005 called “Tiger & Dragon”. It's good enough to recommend to people that can't stand dorama, and have (a bit too) many similar elements.

It seems you have to download it old style, by fishing for raws and then getting subtitles to them. Raws from http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=688411&showfiles=1 are fresh enough, and files from http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=351244&showfiles=1 are widely available, including on Rutracker (which equals speed). Subtitles are easy to find, but make sure to look for additional TL notes and descriptions of rakugo stories, AFAIR, I read something like that.

Note that special episode is actually episode 00, and should be watched first.

I agree with some of the other anons, I thought this scene was great and I'm glad the story wasn't abridged. I especially appreciated the parts without laughs and music, you really got to appreciate Tomokazu's story telling.

Maybe. But I felt that it played well into his overly enthusiastic, child-like character pretty well. It's also implied that he may have been drinking, (though whether the cup hitting the floor was real or simply illustrating shishou's story isn't revealed.) Upon further review, they show his hands earlier and they're empty and the lighting in the cup room and Yotarou's appear to be different.

This I agree with. It seemed that Konatsu and Yotarou would have needed more time to warm up to each other based on their first encounter, but they were close friends ten minutes in it looked like. I also felt that the aniki situation would have taken more than a short story and a few laughs to overcome.

I was so caught up in the rakugo that I was completely blindsided when the episode just suddenly ended after it. Great stuff.

Though Kikuhiko's first rakugo was painful to watch. Completely soulless. It's like he was simply doing a recital. For all that their master said Sukeroku was just mimicking things he'd seen, Kikuhiko is the one who came off as doing just that.

I just wish it was interposed with modern-age scenes a bit. To give it a bit of juxtaposition to really give off the impression of it being a story verbally told right then and there.

I didn't get it either. I thought for sure the rakugo was going to continue onto another act, since it set up a revenge plot quite well.

Then it just suddenly ends. My eyes aren't slanted enough for this as well.

The geisha girl didn't seem to like Kikuhiko's newfound calling and realization. I hope things spiral out of control from this and begin to have some bearing on the plot somewhere down the line, but I fear that it'll only be some minor character drama in the upcoming episode.

It's been, what, 6 episodes of the past now? Sukeroku is no closer to dying than he was at the beginning, and there has been no drastic progression of the other plotpoints yet. I'm starting to wonder if he'll just suddenly drop dead of liver failure.

Thankfully, the episode preview gave some small hint of shaking things up with Miyokichi. I knew that whore would start all the bad shit that happens. I just hope we aren't in for a roller-coaster of plot twists, happenings, and climactic cliffhangers every episode, since we're nearing the end.

This episode just made me more excited for the confrontation between Kiku and Sukeroku next episode. I'm glad the pace picked up in the last two episodes, though everything prior to that was useful for buildup. Does anyone know how many more episodes there are? If it's only 12 or 13 episodes the ending will seem abrupt, and we will have barely seen our original protagonist, whose name I can't even remember.
