 No.404294

Neat sidestepping on the family environment, and also funny in a black humor sort of way.

Great transformation sequence. Excellent level of fanservice for a 4 minute anime. Hopefully they'll keep it up. I'm looking forward to seeing the black-haired friend transform as well. She's gonna be a magical girl, too, right? Right.

Yeah, the opening is cute and all, but shouldn't shorts do something, anything, with what little time they have?

So far I've only watched comedy shorts and that format probably works best with the short time per episode, but what is even the genre of this?

Saying mahou shoujo is a copout, this barely qualifies as slice of life.

I feel like this show will leave no memories behind, no fanbase, no hatebase, nothing, it will go down as a 5/10 in the anime history books and will never be talked about again.

 No.420983

>>420981

it's really too short to do anything meaningful

shorts will kill anime

 No.420988

>>420983

They have been getting more.

Shows seem to be getting shorter as well, I've been recently watching lots of 80s anime and a lot of them have over 50 episodes. Nowadays, most shows don't even get 24 but only 12 - 13 episodes and maybe a second season if they sell well.

Well, it's not like most shows in the OVA boom were long but still, I don't think you can do much with shorts except comedy.Wasn't there a horror short once that failed hard because they couldn't build any suspense in 5 minutes?

I feel like this might be a symptom of a larger illness that seems to be plaguing anime. Money isn't really made with the show itself but with merchandise. Therefore it's the smart decision to make shows as short as possible so that you can make new characters and new stuff to print them on faster.

But while the entire season chart consisting out of 12 episode shows is probably a phenomenon here to stay for the foreseeable future, I don't think that shorts can create enough of a connection with the viewer to sell a lot of merch.

Like, who will buy a plastic model of one of this shows characters, no matter how cute they make them, when it's so forgettable?

okay but even Wakaba girl had those 6 minutes and it fit in entire SoL formula through the season. it was a good watch

and look at the mahou shoujo anime. it only has enough time to anime a girl getting angry at a bird for 2 minutes. with the extra minutes you could do more meaningful worldbuilding or even shoehorn in a small battle. this is way too short

Yeah, Wakaba had nearly twice the time, but even then it delivered very well. The director probably didn't planned properly, it feels more like a single episode chopped into 3 minutes pieces than each episode being something of it's own.

 No.421216

Regarding the length of shows, I find that the 7:30-9:00 minute format is about the absolute minimum you can do. Anything else is far too short to work for anything but a comedy. Teekyuu is the only exception.

I still hold some minute faith that a great team could put out a 4 minute show with a small, coherent, and well-paced plot, but I still haven't seen it yet.

>>420988

>Wasn't there a horror short once that failed hard because they couldn't build any suspense in 5 minutes?

Pupa? If so, that wasn't a failure solely and strictly because of the time limit. There were other factors.

>>420981

The show's actually really efficient at delivering pure cuteness given its format. They wanted (or were forced) to make candy and they pulled it off.

>>420988

I'm guessing that shorts are a great way to break in new staff or internal process. They're also a flexible addition to workload if they can't take on another major project in a certain time period.

I think it's wrong to say that 12/24/50 episode formats produce better or worse shows. What they do is produce different kinds of shows. The 12-episode format is great for making distilled, high impact self-contained stories (which I'm biased towards). The 50-episode format is great for sprawling, slow-burn epics (I haven't watched enough to encounter a good one).

That said, there are relatively more people who can pull off a good 12-episode show compared to a good 50-episode one, especially since there's not much opportunity nowadays to build up the skillset to tackle a longform project.

 No.433079

>>433039

>there are relatively more people who can pull off a good 12-episode show compared to a good 50-episode one

nowadays the 50 episode animes are extinct. not even seitokai yakuindomo reached that number despite two seasons and motherload of ovas made for it. only absolute juggernauts like JoJo or ass class can afford those, an 26 episodes anime series is already a huge risk like kyoani found out. in this climate 12 episode series make more sense

 No.433084

>>433039

>The 12-episode format is great for making distilled, high impact self-contained stories (which I'm biased towards).

What you say sounds right on paper, but in practical terms just about never happens. There's too many hangups that the medium needs to employ for a 1 cour to have such a tight story. Such as obligatory episodes, a dedicated episode to introduce plot elements, characters, etc etc. When you have such few episodes/time to work with, having a chunk of them pre-allocated kills creativity.

In an ideal world, I think 14-16 episodes would be just about perfect for a small and contained story, but that never happens. The next best thing is the 24-26, my personal favorite.

Though after thinking about it for a bit, I realize the problem isn't the run-time, but the utter unwillingness to make a move that breaks away from convention. Writers are scared shitless to move outside of the guided lines.

 No.433854

>>433084

>What you say sounds right on paper, but in practical terms just about never happens.

That's an exaggeration, or you're even snootier than I am. Looking back at the shows I've watched that aired over the last three years, 19/55 of the 12 episode shows were at least decent (while 4/15 of the 24 episode shows were at least decent). It's not that hard to skip out on the obvious crud to get success rates that beat Sturgeon's Law.

Also, I should clearly be watching more anime. That's not even a fourth of the material that came out.

 No.434013

>>433854

>Looking back at the shows I've watched that aired over the last three years, 19/55 of the 12 episode shows were at least decent

>55

>three years

Elementary schoolkid level.

Your judgement is shit, by the by. If your standards of criterion here is anime that are "at least decent," then one can only assume that you concluded the rest of those 36 shows as not even decent. By your own admission, more than half of the stuff you watch is bad. This goes double for the 24 episode shows.

Either you are ridiculously elitist, which isn't a bad thing, or you simply have shit judgement in anime. Both options are overshadowed by the fact that you are a casual who barely watches anything as is.

Furthermore, this is all meaningless since we haven't established any single criteria of objective judgement. What is a "good" show? What makes a show "bad"? Do we include adaptions? Should SOL shows be put on the same pedestal as a story that tries to have a story? So on and so on.

This show casually drops some pretty heavy shit about her family life from time to time, then just moves right on.

All is not right in this magical girls life.
