It does use FFmpeg underneath.

It's not convenient to download clip via ytdl, passing it appropriate format flags, then open it with player, search for keyframe timestamps (and default seek step is too big), copy them to ffmpeg command manually every time, etc. This utility provides simple interface designed for this exact task.

xmr is

- proprietary

- doesn't work on GNU/Linux

- cutting without reencoding is kinda hidden too far in the menus? Did you try it? (Like in demo video.)

Also you will need one more program to download from youtube, it's not so convenient to choose format in console ytdl and GUI youtube downloaders don't provide you all possible formats, only mp4 in most cases or vp8 with small resolution.

>>405378

Scripting won't help here because all those operations are interactive. You need interactively choose video format based on resolution/size, interactively find good fragment in player, checking against the estimated size. Maximum you will have is some similitude of webm.py's interactive mode where it asks few questions in console and opens mpv with predefined hotkeys. But it's not so convenient.

VP9 has gotten substantially better in the latest versions. Lanczos is no longer recommended because it produces an image too sharp to compress efficiently for the low bitrate we use. I recommend using the default (Bicubic) scaler for most videos because it's a good balance of sharpness and compressibility. Using Mitchel (-sws_flags bicubic -param0 1/3 -param1 1/3) produces a little blurrier image but is also a little more compressible, resulting in a smaller file size at the same bitrate.

Also why are you using -cpu-used 3 instead of 1 and -preset veryfast 1.webm in your first pass?

1080p -> 720p (1.5x) FFmpeg Bicubic (b=0 c=0.6) vs Mitchel (b=1/3 c=1/3) results in a 9.5% smaller file size.

1080p -> 360p (3.0x) FFmpeg Bicubic vs Mitchel results in a 6.3% smaller file size.

This is probably not the ideal test video because of all the grain, short length, and aspect ratio. Not bad, but needs more testing on ffmpeg Bicubic vs Mitchel with the same file size.

Using Mitchel should primarily be used as a bitrate saving technique rather then the default because ffmpeg Bicubic looks better (sharper) in comparison at normal bitrates (based on the few tests and the nature of the algorithm).

Well, comparing against different file size is not that meaningful because according to SSIM Mitchell has noticeable better metric result, even when comparing it with 720p CatRom. (Though metric might be not ideal.)

>because ffmpeg Bicubic looks better (sharper)

Don't also forget that Mitchell produces less aliasing/Moiré artefacts, see e.g. here: http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/filter/#compare

(Though I prefer sharper resampling filters too.)

Btw, it might be worth to try ffmpeg's unsharp filter on low-quality sources as mentioned here: >>>/webm/2961

Also, to summarize almost an year of WebM encoding technics development.

Questions still need to be answered:

- How does -aq-mode affects the picture? Can it improve quality?

- Good denoisers/lowpass/unsharp filters settings in order to improve compression.

- Does -qcomp <0.5 / similar options help with VBR mode under/overshooting?

- Tool for splitting anime source in parts and lowering framerate only at corresponding intervals (i.e. without camera pans)?

- Open source VPx analyzer? Anyone?

Maybe I forgot something but it seems like not much left.

So I heard something recently about xmedia recode offering a 2pass option now since libvpx 2.8.5 came out. What happened, and is there something about it I can use to improve my command prompt scripts?

>they just put in a 2 pass option because the FFMPEG dudes finally put it in properly with the recent update to 2.8.5

>You could do it before but it was like a hack eyed attempt where it basically created a mock stat file then the encoder if it was written for it would try to adjust the bitrate while it encoded

>But now its fully supported so the xmedia dudes and other encoders finally put the option in for 2 pass

.5 is patch version, nothing was really changed since 2.8. And ffmpeg's been supporting libvpx 2pass for a long time.

Since every year seems to bring a scare among anime torrent trackers, I figured IPFS may be a future solution. Now, you can share any file over it but it got me thinking - why not just share hashes to the episodes in the thread and allow people to stream them?

There's some issues with that, though:

>Subtitles: They refuse to display on Firefox's native player.

>Bandwidth: It will likely be only a handful of people hosting it on IPFS, so I want to minimize the bandwidth without attracting the ire of anti-streamfag /a/nons.

>Speed: See above. It might take a while to load these videos, ruining the whole convenience factor.

So if we can cram a small series into a .webm so we can upload it to 8ch, why not make streaming-optimized videos that we can share through IPFS? It will allow people to preview a series without committing to, say, tracking down an episode on Nyaa and adding it to your torrent client and downloading it and then watching it?

Here's an example I whipped up with the fourth episode of Sekkou Boys.

https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmX75zarecukwzwv9A4YzXxkcdWpLHjZgDbtk3GTrGUBoJ

Here's a bash function I whipped together to do this more generally:

function webmanime {
echo "Filename: "
read inputfile
inputtooutput='.webm'
outputfile=$inputfile$inputtooutput
ffmpeg -i $inputfile -sn -vf subtitles=$inputfile -c:v libvpx -b:v 3M -c:a libvorbis -q:a 0 -crf 20 -threads 4 $outputfi$
}

Problem is that the episode is just over 50MB for a video just under 8 minutes. I realize these settings are pretty aggressively geared toward quality but I was looking to maximize it. What I ask isn't as much a technical question as it is a preference question, but I would appreciate any little tweaks to improve the quality.

How much quality loss is acceptable for this purpose? What bitrate should I target for such a purpose?

 No.419327

>>419318

>>Subtitles: They refuse to display on Firefox's native player.

You need to convert them to WebVTT (ffmpeg -i sub.ass sub.vtt) and attach as separate <track>, this works in new browsers.

See test page here: http://www.iandevlin.com/html5test/webvtt/html5-video-webvtt-sample.html

>How much quality loss is acceptable for this purpose? What bitrate should I target for such a purpose?

CRF might be more useful here since you're not limited for particular site but want to use some fixed quality instead.

Start with -b:v 0 -crf 30 and adjust -crf value as you like it. Also, you need to use VP9 2pass with recommended template, VP8 provides too bad size/quality ratio.

>I figured IPFS may be a future solution

Haha no, just a marginal toy. (I don't say it's bad to play with.)

I agree that on paper (and graphs) Mitchell looks better but when comparing samples at native resolution Catmull-Rom produces a nicer visual image. The increased detail that's preserved far outweighs any noticeable aliasing/moiré artifacts in real samples.

Is the increased image quality worth the bitrate penalty? I'll do some testing next week.

You may get fewer amout of encoder artifacts using bitrate savings of blurry resampler. But difference is not that significant.

>why not just share hashes to the episodes in the thread and allow people to stream them?

But people already do that. Bittorrent magnet links exist exactly for this reason, it's basically a hash of the torrent file so if a hosting site goes down, all that's needed to get it back running is a list of magnet links. There are ways to stream the torrent instead of waiting for the whole thing to download first if you want. Popcorn Time is a great example of this.

No need to reinvent the wheel when a working system is already widely deployed. We're stuck with bittorrent for the long haul.

Thanks for the advice. I tried 2-pass with vp9 and CRF at 35, using the bicubic settings from >>410408 and I'm at 25MB with almost no quality change at all. WebVTT is interesting but I think I'm going to stick with the hardsubs. The only issue is that it's only using one core, even though I changed -threads to 4. (Also no libopus because it's apparently not built into my ffmpeg and I don't feel like rebuilding it so I just went with libvorbis instead.)

[1st pass omitted]
ffmpeg -i $inputfile -c:v libvpx-vp9 -b:v 0k -crf 35 -c:a libvorbis -b:a 0 -lag-in-frames 25 -auto-alt-ref 1 -frame-parallel 0 -tile-columns 0 -sws_flags bicubic -vf subtitles=$inputfile -ac 2 -colorspace bt709 -threads 4 -sn -f webm -pass 2 $outputfile

>Also no libopus because it's apparently not built into my ffmpeg and I don't feel like rebuilding it

In your bash script you could use ffmpeg to extract the audio, use opusenc to encode the audio, and then mux them back together with ffmpeg or mkvmerge. Search your package manager for opus-tools. It's also worth noting that an updated ffmpeg (which will most likely include an updated libvpx) will improve both video quality and encoding speed. What distro do you use?

Also why do you have -b:a 0?

>>419364

I agree it's not the ideal way of sharing files but I'm afraid it's going to be a legacy protocol that the mass majority of people will continue to use for the next 5 or 10 years. The next massively used file sharing protocol will most likely be determined by people on sites like this one. Once IPFS hits stable and i2p integration is finalized it could be a compelling candidate.

Trying to encode some anime OP on Windows, latest x64 FFMPEG build. When doing the first pass using templates posted in this thread I get this message:

And after the second pass the video doesn't look any better than when I test with single-pass encoding, so I guess I'm doing something wrong.

This is the command line I'm trying to use:

An SSIM comparison between mitchell and ffmpeg's bicubic (modified catrom) on episode 6, which has the least target bitrate because there's a lot of complicated visuals causing the encoder to overshoot, shows mitchell performing slightly better. This is very misleading because when we compare screenshots between the two, bicubic is the clear winner. The first set is frame 300 where on the graph bicubic has a better score. The second set is frame 2450 where mitchell has a large gain on bicubic. The graph says there's a larger difference between the second comparison then the first but visually it's the opposite. The entire episode looks better, both sharper and with more detail when bicubic is used. All other things being constant, the bicubic version takes up only 0.03MB more and produces noticeably better quality.

reposting

- use VP9/Opus formats with latest versions of libvpx/libopus/ffmpeg (preferably from git)

- 2pass, recommended slow settings, play with qmin/qmax/crf

- lower audio bitrate down to 36/48k, Opus is still not that bad at those settings (8-10k is ok for speech)

- lower resolution (360p/288p/225p is perfectly watchable)

- lower framerate (anime have only 8/12 real fps most of the screen time)

- apply denoise filters

- apply lowpass filters

- experimental settings (-aq-mode, -tune-content, -static-thresh, etc)

>the bicubic version takes up only 0.03MB more

That's strange because in my tests using just different resampler was giving noticeable size savings, making it possible to rise QP and thus making overall quality better. Probably it depends on the source?

In your test SSIM metric for Mitchell is only slighty better and all screenshots except the first pair is basically the norm. Mitchell will always looks slightly blurrier. I'm not sure why there are more artefacts on first pair in case of Mitchell. Anyway, my idea/hypothesis: Mitchell is blurier thus worse than CatRom, but encoder will produce file with less size so you can improve quality in different way: by reducing amount of encoder artifacts. Maybe in practice it's not always the case.

Lurking hard it seems the OVA series was made before, during and after the TV series.

The OVA series is apparently 1 episode away from being complete with no known release date.

They have been releasing 1-2 episodes per year every year since 2008.
