I've started watching the anime after reading the manga up to ch. 142 and I must say that:

>Good faithful adaptation

>Sometimes odd voice choices for characters (I didn't like it)

BUT

I think the studio failed in two main areas:

1. Oversexualized characters in day-to-day routine. Erina is the biggest example.

2. Undersexualized characters during the illusions.

Also regarding the illusions, in the manga they are really explosive but in the anime they are really dull, boring and somewhat forced.

Because, ultimately, Souma is the protagonist. The antagonists he faces need to be suitably impressive for his successes to be climactic and tense. A common and easy way to show this is by having the opponents crush previously established side characters, so that the hero can shine on.

It's still strange here, for reasons you already stated. Every single viewer reading this already knows that Central is strong. They don't need to pull a cheap tactic like this to impress it more into our minds for when Souma steps up to bat. Furthermore, it'd be even dumber since they already pulled this trick out before with Aldini VS Giganigger.
