Seconding >>405869, though I've seen the original and the 80s-90s incarnations, and recommend those. The pussified latest incarnation, not so much. I do wonder if Tezuka was alive how he feels about fujoshi appropriating his Mary Sue and turning BJ into yaoibait fodder.

>Isnt he just a doctor?

He's an outlaw surgeon with a grudge against normal people. The stories swing very brutally between comic and vicious, and often show his mean streak whenever he inflicts a batman gambit on a patient to see if he's worthy of living.

He's a bigger character than the medical subgenre implies, because of the biographic material thrown in by the author. A classic Black Jack scenario would be, saving a guy who's going to get his leg amputated, the kind of stuff that's seen often in times of war.

If it were done today, all the stuff about pain and death would turn into emo faggotry. As it is instead, it's sad but clear headed, and you don't feel like an idiot reading it.

Captain Harlock, first series. The anime that embodies /pol/ and would make tumblr foam at the mouth.

Earth is populated by cuck midgets who won't defend it as a matriarchy, of sexy alien womyn approaches. It is up to a loner with a pirate spaceship to stop them.

When struck to death, the aliens scream and burn like witches. As main characters literally cry with joy and a smile on their faces.

Harlock himself is impossibly cool, but distant. The viewership embodies in his younger doppelganger, a kid from Earth who's out to get revenge for his father. That guy is mentally unstable and is consumed by anger and hate, in a way that no possible modern animation -especially western- would allow. In here, he's a hero.

File: 1452990587658.jpg (726.54 KB, 1492x2238, 2:3, memories.jpg)

Recently watched Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories for the first time.

Each episode was really very different from the others thematically.

The first, Magnetic rose, was a mix of science-fiction, horror, and drama. The second, Stink Bomb, more of a dark comedy/horror.

The third, Cannon Fodder, was very very unconventional. Part dystopian social commentary, but the world he creates is just so dreamlike, yet in a nightmarish way. Like something from a fairytale.

Otomo actually wrote and directed Cannon Fodder. Magnetic Rose was directed by veteran animator Kouji Morimoto, while Stink Bomb was directed by Darker than Black creator Tensai Okamura.

Both Magnetic Rose and Stink Bomb were written by Satoshi Kon

Magnetic Rose was the biggest surprise. I don't want to hype it up too much, but if you've never seen it, give it a watch. It's only like 45 minutes.

I remember thinking that this would be fairly typical space horror early on. While there was an element of that (very well done), I realized my expectations were being betrayed when Heintz and Miguel entered the structure and saw what it was like inside.

But what really surprised me was the Emily subplot. Very well foreshadowed, at first I thought the creepy doll and spooky girl were just typical horror conventions. But tying them into Heintz's past was brilliant.

The way things escalate, from horror to horror-action, was brilliantly done. Things keep ramping up up to the explosive finale.

Ultimately, the story was about being a slave shackled to the past vs living on in the present.

Heintz dealt with the loss of Emily and was able to go on living his life. While Eva died, alone and secluded in a prison she'd built to lock herself in the past, the only legacy of her prestige and fame a death-trap that hypnotizes men and drags them into the fantasy world that she left behind.

At least Miguel got what he wanted. Poor, poor Miguel.

Lush scenery, beautiful animation, a moving story, with a soundtrack that's part opera and part Yoko Kanno, it's one of the buried gems of Japanese animation.

Stink Bomb, on the otherhand, is a surreal comedy. There's less to say about it than Magnetic Rose. It's not bad, I enjoyed it a great deal for the direction/animation. There's not much in the way of thematic content or story, it's just really fun from beginning to end. At least I thought it was.

Cannon Fodder felt at times more like a silent movie. There was strong emphasis on the images and what was going on visually on screen, but what little dialogue there was was rarely focused on. Most talking was done off camera or to the side. It was the world Otomo was illustrating that he wanted us to explore.

It felt less like a story being told about a fictional world, than a glimpse into it. Like we're just observing what's going on in some other universe. We get a general sketch of what life is like there for its denizens, with emphasis on how different it is.

But there are obvious parallels meant to be drawn between the fictional world and the real. It takes trends that we see in real life but takes them to fantastical extremes. The setting might be uncanny but the characters are still humans, having to live in their reality. So we see through their lenses what life would be like in that kind of world.

I recently started watching Escaflowne. I found it at a local pawn shot, I picked it along with Ikkitousen and Yukikaze up for $40.

The animation is really smooth, especially during action scenes and the music is stellar. The shoujo themes aren't as strong as I had expected when I started watching the series, they've handled the combination of action and romance quite well thus far.

I plan to watch Rahexphon after this, as it too has strong romantic elements.

There is also a third unfinished installment in the series called Izcerlion. It's shit. It didn't help that is was being produced at the tail end of the OVA boom where quality and sales were going to hell. It had a plot that was just too much of a stretch from the first 2 series to even be made in the same continuity. One more thing on Izcer 3 was the superb ship designs. Very boss mechanical designs.

I watched the first season of Yamato recently.

My feelings on the show are conflicted. There are a ton of animation mistakes, the plot is often inconsistent and the filler isn't fun, I remember very little of the episodes between the first and the finale.

However, when the show gets good, it's pretty awesome. I'll watch the remake at some point to see if it's any better, and maybe the second season at some point.

>Kawajiri seems to be generally overlooked

Nigger what? While he hasn't done anything since 2007 (when he made that shitty Highlander anime), stuff like Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust are some of his most celebrated works. Ninja Scroll especially was a huge "gateway" anime for budding weaboos in the 90s. Kawajiri also directed a short for the Animatrix in 2003. You're clearly an underage newfag.

Oedo is my favorite Kawajiri anime. Had this been a 26 episode series it would've been a hit on the level of Trigun or Outlaw Star. The ingredients for an entertaining action anime TV series are all there

There's not really an overarching plot to drive things forward, but it's not so mundane that it can be called slice of life, and it's not really romantic or character-growth oriented enough to be a romance series. It occasionally has small arcs, but it's almost kind of monster/villain of the week at times.

It's a weird creature of a show, but it's got a good cast of characters and a fun premise and even if it doesn't really go anywhere (it literally doesn't. The end of the series was the author saying "Just imagine they had more adventures. Everything stays the same. The end) it's still a fun ride.

I just finished the OVAs. It was really enjoyable, though there were some things that could have benefited from a little more screen time, like the whole war with the Turan and how Jimsa worked his way into Narses plan.

The whole king breaking his chains, taking Guiscard hostage and proceeding to just mosey out of his castle, was the most bad-ass thing from the whole series.

I'll probably watch the OVAs again once I finish the first season of the new series.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is pretty much the best materialisation and reification of the feminist ethos. You can tell it was made by a man, because it really gets what patriarchy is and really gets at what rebellious women don't like about the patriarchal system, and how they are inherently tragic creatures, because they desire an impossibility, not least because they feel conflicted about their desire. The fact that Utena loses her virginity with the symbol of The Patriarch in the show is sheer brilliance.

Beyond the thematic treatment, the mise en scene is also brilliant. The theatrical framing of the whole show fits the contents like a glove, and the series in all its nooks is full of artistry and craftsmanship.

Lighting in a bottle, pretty much. A testament to this is that politically I lean "far right", traditionalist, and yet I enjoyed the series immensely.

Let me throw around some info about the Leijiverse, for those who are interested in the old classics. This is the loosely-tied fictional universe of Leiji Matsumoto's works, whose trademark is incredibly romanticized science fiction. We are talking about a guy who literally has an old west train, fly into space. This is played completely straight, no snark and false shame involved: the result just trascends.

These series are, at the same time, shonens for darn children AND tales filled with rage and resentment. Matsumoto is a very old man, his works are contemporary to stuff like Go Nagai or Star Trek's original series. Old enough to write about the far right's feeling in the aftermath of WW2. It can't be any more evident, than in Battleship Yamato where the japanese fleet's flagship has to fight off a race of blonde invaders who devastated their land with atomic bombs.

Yamato is too well known and I've already described Harlock up above, so let me talk about Galaxy Express 999. We're talking about an episodic scifi travel story, with a solid granite planet of the week format. The bare bones summary would be, that a gorgeous blonde lures a shota into traveling through a series of ever more decadent societies: with the goal of turning the boy into a machine, who can feel no pain.

Any kid from the 70s who reads that summary shit, would sign up immediately for the adventure: you got cool places to visit, a hot woman and a killer gun to boot. For you, it should ring as many fucking alarm bells under you ass as possible.

You got a kid whose mother gets hunted for sport by a band of augmented humans, whose law forces the vanilla to be their cattle. And like all of them, the kid believes the invisible hand bullshit that if he works hard enough, one day he will have a chance of traveling on the space train and become augmented himself: which brings immortality and shuts down emotions. Of course he's got no chance, and here the seductress shows up, playing motherly and cozy: come with me little boy, I'll give you everything for free. It's not a trap, but consider you'll have the entire rest of the human race out to steal your place on that train, so arm yourself for a struggle.

At its core, Galaxy Express 999 is an exploration of dystopias. Lots of them are complete bullshit, fairy tales for japanese schoolchildren: here's the planet split in classes, here's the planet of the cavemen, here's the planet whose owner became a living iron monument and just looks at the sky forever.

Now, your brain might have autocompleted that the goal of the show at this spoint, is to help any of those faggots like the A-Team. Far from it. It's too late: the good people are there, but they're isolated; there's no justice, nothing to save; they are positively rotten worlds. Your mission is to survive until the train refills and departs the next morning. It's bleak, sometimes comically or childishly so, but played absolutely straight.

You'll be excused too, if you thought that the kid was a blatant self insertion for the viewership, and the blonde was pure fanservice. They are... but these are not the 70s anymore: you become that kid, it's like watching through the eyes of another generation. Are you comfortable with the idea of killing an entire race in revenge, do you lick your lips when the kickback on your bigass gun shatters the face of every cyborg you meet? That little kid does. His new mom, slash teacher, slash lover taught him so.

>Lupin III

S1 "green jacket" was the most dark and unconventional, with some memorable deaths. Season 3 was stale and homeogenized, think Toei.

Season 2 "red jacket" was Miyazaki's masterpiece. Lupin got turned into a gentleman thief, and it was all about the chemistry within the trio. Not to mention that fucking samurai's moves being so orgasmic (well, that's not exclusive to S2).

Don't miss on Miyazaki's cameo episodes from S2. One is a spoof of Conan Future Boy, with Fujiko Mine running commando on some uber plane. The other is a little masterpiece, honestly good enough for its own series: the robot from Laputa is flown around for terrorism, by a Nausicaa\Cagliostro princess lookalike (related video, check 00.00 and 06.00).

>Urusei Yatsura

Ataru Moroboshi is a relic of ages past, that sex drive of him would have him thrown in jail for harassment any day now. I think of him as the healthy, un-idiot version of Philip J. Fry: that's another character who in the 70s would be a hero (Buck Rogers) and today has to be... sad, castrated. It's liberating to see him running around like the god of boners incarnate, absolutely proud of his dirt even though he has a (violent bitch) girlfriend waiting for him home.

Rumiko Takahashi was a war machine, working on Lum and Ranma seemingly forever, basically inventing slice of life. But these came from before harem style solidified, so you can see how the prototype wasn't really as cancer as today.

It's a scifi coming of age story about the indomitable human spirit. The even pay extra attention to remind you that "this is a soldier's gun": I guess they're teaching kids that's the right way to change the world. When I first watched Harlock, I was so surprised at the angry kid not being treated like a dangerous deviant, that I joked about the inevitable scene where he would shoot the country flag as he screamed vengeance for his father. THAT FUCKING HAPPENS by like episode 5.

As an added bonus, Matsumoto loves german expressionism which makes for sinister and spectacular camera angles. In Harlock, the ship interior is actually darker than space: pitch black corridors dotted by lightspots, the bridge resembles a theatre or a throne room in absolute darkness, and the computer room is a monolith.

What if I told you, that there was exactly as much moe in the 20th century anime, if not more. Same with ecchi. Majority of it is not translated to English, and was never licensed in the West, which is the root of the misconceptions of yours. But it exists nonetheless. If you think any of the 21st century moe shows introduced something new to the genre, think again. Most of the tropes you hate are older than you. I've been watching some releases of anime from the fifties, and these titles already had pantyshots and female nudity.

In my opinion, you're nothing more than a newfag, spreading misconceptions you've heard others say, in order to fit in. You haven't personally seen the required amount and variety of the old titles. Know your place.

Cutesy characters did, it's the proper lolis, which only showed up in the late 90s. Contemporary anime cracked jokes about the fad, like Excel Saga.

Your average slice of life like Urusei Yatsura, used to have older characters: now it would be lolis. Witches from the Studio Pierrot series used to transform from lolis, into sexy grownups: now they would be just sexy lolis.

The few lolis back then, didn't have the same overpowering importance as today's. Things change over time, is all. Can't pretend time doesn't pass for the industry.

You're forgetting the fact that old moe actually looks original and didn't rely on cancerous voice acting. My problem isn't with cuteness, it's how it's executed. Take that catalog and compare it to this season's anime. Everything looks pretty and bland right now, where as back then there was at least some form of style to it. Old anime is just fun to watch. Is there as much gore/violence in today's action as there was back then? It feels as if we've abandoned good action for shoehorned romance subplots. Idk.

For example, compare season 1 of inital D to season two. Can you really tell me season 2 looks aesthetically better?

Guess what I'm trying to say is, we've done away with skillful hand-drawn cels for this awful flash-tier watercolor bullshit. I just don't like it. I enjoyed the grittiness of shit like Genocyber, I just can't find much of that these days.

Of the three King Arthur is surely the MOST imaginary. Jesus of Nazareth has a shitton of fake magic attributed to him, but we're fairly certain he existed.

Shakespeare was real even though some people think he used ghost writers for his plays (and they say that about all the famous dead authors too).

I liked Crossgame and the earlier work that it copied Touch; was reading and saw Adachi won some awards for this before he sold his soul to sports manga. The opening is abstract and thoughtful; op's in the 80's tend to set pace for a show pretty well. The main plot follows a young Masato Wakamatsu who has a crush on a girl named Miyuki, she seemingly reciprocates his affections until it is revealed that he had accidentally swiped her bikini bottoms. Dumped and slapped, he bolsters his pride and hits on another girl at the beach who also happens to be named Miyuki. He then meets up with his long lost sister, who just so happened to be girl he just hit on. The show touches on some very creepy adult themes, yet plays them off as very innocent. The soundtrack is very good; I'm up to ep13 and there's a song in the background that's like a Japanese Talking Heads; still trying to do some digging as to who actually did it. Given the age it seems this is the progenitor of many of the tropes we still see today, and sadly Miyuki does them much better.

I still need to read more of the manga after getting halfway on the old old sets, but it definitely feels like Rumiko didn't automatically fall into the "Akane gets angry and hits Ranma" stuff as often as the anime filler did.

I also noticed Noriko Hidaka's a lot easier on the ears even when angry than Myriam Sirois or whomever Ocean Group used.
