What if the ruler(s) of the Great Kingdom during the Void Century carried the 'D.' initial? And what if the power(s)/technology behind the Great Kingdom surpassed common science? Because of the Pre-World Gov't alliance's attack on them, they swore vengeance and technically "cursed" those with the 'D.' initial to have an unyielding will, enough to overthrow the World Gov't. Maybe another property of the "curse" gifted to their personalities is a great ambition. Dragon's is to overthrow corruption. Luffy's is, obviously, to become the Pirate King. Ace just wanted to be loved by family and friends.

That's most likely why Nami, Brook, and Chopper are tagging along this time, they hardly got any screentime during Dressrosa.
