alrighty guys i haven't watched this episode and probably won't, because I decided to drop it after the last one.
However, considering they established a pretty bland pattern for the show in the 5 episodes since, I want to play a game and make some guesses. You guys tell me how close I am (swear to god i haven't seen it):
>Ranta continues being a faggot (easy mode, get that out of the way first)
>New priestess is portrayed as cold and callous, despite the fact she's just reacting to this party's retardation
>Mage continues to be completely useless. Also, she sees her own shadow and screams, passing out immediately from shock.
>MC-kun makes one or more fucktarded decisions that go against all logic because of his moralfagging
>The writers throw in one or two hamfisted "emotional" scenes that mean absolutely nothing to the audience because nobody cares or has any attachment to the characters
>Instead of actual character growth, there is a quick narration spot wherein MC-san informs the audience of how they've "improved" since last episode
>The party gets into fights and is still bad at it, but not quite as bad as they were. Mary tells them they suck, they hate her for it, but they need her.
>more "misunderstandings" for mage to stumble upon to set her heart aflutter (maybe not though, i doubt they'd try that every episode)
>the squad discusses "tactics" in as broad a manner as possible, stating obvious shit anyone would know from babby's 1st RPG
that's all I really got for now, as far as the main points go. I'm really interested to see how I scored here. If you want, you guys can count 0 if it's wrong, 1 if it's sort of right, and 2 if it's right, tally up at the end and see how close or far off i was.

So far, I'm enjoying the show. It's not like a "Halp I'm trapped in a video game" story--I think that's important. It's like a DnD adventure. It's as if these characters are the created characters in a pen n' paper tabletop rpg like DnD or Pathfinder. That explains why they suck ass at level one. You can't hit for shit at level one in some tabletop games.
The slowness, off-topic conversations, and accidental references would be explained by this. The real-life players (role-playing as these characters in the show in real-time) make these characters do and say these things, accidentally making references to things that don't exist in this world. And the players roll to see if their actions work, but they suck at early levels.
Imagine every character in the group in this show is just being imagined by a different guy around a table in someone's basement while rolling dice across a big piece of gridpaper.

Well, let's be fair to all the thieves out there (I usually play rogue/thief/assassin in any sort of rpg game so it's more justifying my choice to unknown people on the internet) - stealth, sneaking, and dirty tricks, that's the whole point of being a thief.
>>429103
A quarter of his speech even seemed like it would go somewhere, but then he just blabbed about how friends are nice in as dumb, forced-drama manner as possible.
And that somehow supposedly works on softening Mary? If she's been so traumatized, she'd want to stay distand herself. When it was said that she's been switching parties, the logical explanation to me was that she was the one quitting, not getting kicked because of her admittedly obnoxious behavior.
No use getting hung up over it now, though, the show's been pretty inconsistent so far but there's still a chance to salvage it - at least a bit.
No.429228
>>429220
I think she had been the one quitting, probably because she didn't feel like she could connect to other people anymore. Haruhiko's speech seemed like he was just trying to tell her that they too had lost someone and were having trouble connecting to her like she did to them but that they wanted to try and fix that, but he did a shit job of it because he's not got enough points in leadership. It was just a very poorly delivered "We're not so different" speech.

Mary isn't obnoxious. She's just quiet, and irritated at retards telling her how to do her job.
I mean really now. She joins a PUG and every single time anyone even gets a minor boo-boo, they start screaming at her and telling her how to priest correctly, complete with silent blame for all party fuck-ups. Then they turn around once it's all over and extend half-assed invitations to come hang and chill, as if none of the previous behavior happened, and shit-talk her when she doesn't. It's the average Peruvian PUG from hell.
All of this shit is some of the most frustrating things on the planet if you're trying to keep it serious and work together toward some aim. Considering she keeps herself mostly cool and calm, albeit distant, I think she's showing remarkable restraint.
No.429365
>>429268
I understand her side, and she's probably the only non-irritating character to me, but we have to remember that the characters don't have an insight to the big picture like us. They are mostly retards, and exactly because they are, they don't know they're doing everything wrong.
In that case, she still is obnoxious, from a retarded party member's perspective, and my point was that it made more sense to me that she would leave and change parties on her own because she doesn't want to get tied to anyone rather than getting kicked (as it is implied when MC-kun says he had to talk to her and she prepares herself for it as if she's already experienced it).
No.429366
>>429365
I fully agree with you that it's far more likely and realistic for Mary to be the one to call it quits, rather than get the boot, but the show heavily implied that her "obnoxious" behavior is what leads her to get kicked from the parties. Since it went out of its way to imply that that's the norm, we're led to believe that her behavior is some sort of universal negative.
Apparently, she's obnoxious not only from the perspective of a bunch of whiny retards, but from the normal average party.
Which is just preposterous. She's obviously competent, and not outwardly rude. Her only "flaw" is that she's not chummy with everyone. Any old average group would welcome such a person.

The entire fight was actually very well done. There was a minimum of talking heads in a vacuum, a good blend of shifting scenes between focal points, and little QUALITY. The studio managed to impress upon you the swiftness and stakes of a fight to the death pretty well without a massive budget, and gave both sides their due. It was well directed.
The rest of the episode was pretty whatever though, especially the final scene. Way too much hesitation in both Haruhiko's and Mary's speech, to the extent that I'm not even sure what they were both trying to convey. And the Manato grief is beginning to overstay its welcome. Hopefully this will give closure and they can stop spending 5-8 minutes an episode on him.

I agree, this episode was really well executed. I don't even care about the low budget bits, the got me hooked with how brutal the fight was, and how just raw and honest the scenes at the end were
>Hopefully this will give closure
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, buying his badge likely symbolizes the end of the Manato arc
As far as Haruhiko's and Mary's speech, it felt like the kind of conversation you have with someone you've gotten to know really well, but aren't sure if you should be that comfortable with them yet. I could really feel the connection, even though very little was said.
Also, it's really neat to see them pushing mature girls as the potential love interests, wizard-chan got completely sidelined, and after this episode its a tossup for best girl

All of them have got to be in the 16-19 age range. I wouldn't call any of them more "mature" than the others. At least not in a significant way. It's not like the difference is between a loli and an old hag, as usual.
I do agree that Mary is best girl, though. Not only is her personality more refined than Yume and the goblin-cumdump, but she is cuter as well.

Without meaning to crush your dreams of watching that faggot die a horrible death, I think SAO maybe gave people the wrong idea about this series.
Just enough people die to show that it actually is a life-threatening situation, not to be edgy and 'mature' like AoT. At the rate they're going, they're going to have adapted the first two books by the end of the cour. There are 7 novels out so far, and as I understand it, there have only been two fatalities, neither of which is Ranta, so don't get your hopes up.

Haruhiko is being one massive faggot about Ranta.
Not only is Ranta doing his best to fit in and be useful, but I'd say he's also toning down his abrasiveness in his own way. He's not calling everyone nerds and insulting them every 5 minutes now. Even still, Haruhiko is getting assmad about the most inane shit, but is being way too Japanese to effectively curtail his attitude. He'd rather be a faggot and just get mad by himself while not saying anything.
Well, fuck that. If he wanted to fix Ranta's attitude a bit, then he needs to get on his level and talk to him in a fairly equal position. Get mad and call Ranta a faggot. Tell him his shitty attitude is fucking everyone over and be incredibly direct about it. He can tell him to knock it off and stop being a lone edgelord afterwards.
He needs to stop trying to act like some infallible respectable leader-figure that everyone should listen to, like Manato, since Ranta and everyone watching along at home knows he isn't. Nobody truly respects the guy who is shit but acts like the boss of everyone, no matter how he goes about it.
Fucking Haruhiko is such a faggot.
No.439928

Ranta was a better team player when he was being abrasive, as a brooding edgelord he's not giving criticism or letting people know what to expect from him. They're both handling the situation poorly but I'm more inclined to be lenient with Haruhiko because he has a lot more shit on his plate balancing his DPS role and party tactics and he just finished dealing with Mary who needed an entirely opposite method of dealing with to get her on board.
No.439934
>>439928
>Ranta was a better team player when he was being abrasive, as a brooding edgelord he's not giving criticism or letting people know what to expect from him.
That's true, but isn't that also Haruhiko's fault? Ranta's been told his usual way of doing things, being a loud annoying asshole about whatever bothers him, isn't going to fly anymore and he needs to stop. So he's treading awkward territory and doing the opposite by keeping quiet.
They're both in a transitional period of interpersonal relationship and team dynamics right now, but Ranta is at least putting forth real effort into it based on feedback. Haruhiko is just kind of coasting along getting mad by himself in response, leading Ranta to think everything is going swell.
Though to be fair, Haruhiko's got a bit on his plate right now, as you said. That, and he's still stuck on acting like Manato. Which exacerbates the problem, since that won't fly for Ranta.

>haruhiro is taking his sweet ass time with a kobold trying to get the line to appear

No.439944
>>439934
I would say there's some responsibility on Ranta's part to recognize that Haruhiko's feedback was bad and not to listen to it but yeah, Haruhiko should have been better about it in the first place. He should have gone straight to the core of the problem of Ranta not coordinating with the team instead of the symptom of the problem of Ranta coming off like a dick.
It's too bad Moguzo and Shihoru are too soft spoken and Yume is too fucking retarded for any of them to be helpful with the team organization shit. They barely even seem like characters at this point, they're just bots filling roles and doing skill rotations and having no useful input on any of the party's bigger problems.

>He should have gone straight to the core of the problem of Ranta not coordinating with the team instead of the symptom of the problem of Ranta coming off like a dick.
Lead in. You gotta be careful leading in to those kind of things, with a person like Ranta. Otherwise you raise his hackles instantly and he goes on the attack, which is what he did.
The key moment of the conversation was when Ranta threw the weaknesses bit back in Haruhiko's face. By blowing it off and refusing to answer, he's acting as a holier-than-thou faggot that is above Ranta, which instantly ends all possibilities of Ranta taking the (attempted) feedback constructively. Haruhiko refusing to answer and just staying futilely mad for reasons Ranta wouldn't understand is what pissed me off the most about that whole exchange. That he has the gall to act like Ranta is 100% at fault after that is the cherry on the cake.
>bots
I think the rest of the problem is that we're usually not seeing the entire teams dynamics, since they're always fighting things. That's not the place or time for discussing and seeing interactions between them all. Whenever they're in town chilling and it is the time for it, it's always hyperfocused on one persons issues, such as Mary's before this, and now Ranta. They need more shots of them traveling as a group, or chilling in the bar, and just talking.
>>439943
That would change everything. With that, it seems more like Haruhiko is getting ridiculously assmad that Ranta is calling out his leadership, then using that as foundation for all this other bullshit.
