It's got convincing character development (On fun characters), brutal fights, and a plotline that isn't afraid to let the MC lose.

They're not fighting with gloves all the time.

They do Kaburagi Ryu, which is a barehanded fighting style, which is what you see for most of the manga.

In these pictures the characters happened to enter a tournament where they must wear gloves. The manga actually tries to make a pretty big distinction between fighting with/without gloves.

It starts a little weak, but once it establishes what it wants to be it gets AMAZING.

I'll definitely take a look at Shamo though, but don't judge a manga by its pilot.
