Okay that battle was lackluster. In the books it was the first epic feel we got in the story. Kazuma stood up and directed the defenses. It wasn't just the cannons standing around and two shotting the fortress. It was countless small fries digging massiv ditches to slow it down. Rangers and thieves throwing snares. All the magic classes shooting spitballs to wittle down the shields. Then it was the battery of HikkiNEET, Nopan Megumi, and Master exploder slavoing the thing with countless barrages of explosions.
I mean storywise it doesn't make sense for it to be this easy. If any team with reasonable firepower could disable it in two explosions the capitol would have done it long ago. Explosion is an incredibly rare magic because no one bothers to learn it since you get one spell you could only use once a day for 50 points and you could learn Advanced magic which gives you a shit tonne of spells for only 35. It makes sense in the book because Megumin hits it again and again with explosion until her pantsu are flooded with loli juice and Aqua is bitching and complaining. It would have taken more time to do things that way, but it would have allowed DEEN a better way to open season two. If they had done the full battle ended with the Coronanite being teleported away and a little congratulatory talk by the cast it would have been fine. Then they could have opened season two with Kazuma in jail, Aqua outside his window complaining at him and the HikkiNEET interanally Fukodaing before he launches into a recap of season one and the story of what happed with the fat old man, his mansion, and the soldiers arresting Kazuma. That was cool looking and all but it was just lazy storytelling with no forthought from DEEN.

The finale was shit. It was visually impressive, especially when taken after the last few episodes of QUALITY, but they butchered the execution in more ways than even >>440932 recounts.
I was especially pissed that they glossed over the diary bit. I was looking forward to the explanation of how the Destroyer got its shape. Though, since they skipped over all the cool fighting bits, I suppose it's to be expected they skipped the comedic explanation behind its origins. The contrast of incredibly dangerous and ridiculously silly doesn't work very well when you skimp on either.
Oh well. It's DEEN. They better not fuck about when they get to the ultimate weapon in the chuuni village though. That'd be unforgivable.

As someone who has avoided being contaminated by LN knowledge, I have to say that it was great. The whole episode was just great. The diary bit that was there was perfect. The battle felt "right" for what we've had from the show before. The pacing was super fast for taking down the Destroyer in one episode, but at the same time I think dragging it out much longer wouldn't have worked. The show was always at its worst when it was stuck in one motion for too long. Set-up; payoff was truly the format that worked even when dealing with the more active scenes. I can really forgive them for cutting material to have the show play out how it did. Really, how much more could they have done with the time they had? It sucks to hear that they could have gone even more all out with the battle, especially showcasing more cool ability usage; I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time though. If it could have been better, I guess that is just amazing, because I already count what we got as great.
I might be a bit too soft on it (fucking afterglow state man), but remember that this was a break-away hit rather than a sure-fire success. I have to imagine this is better than we ever could have hoped for. It exceeded my expectations a million fold just based on reading the synopsis and seeing the studio name attached to it. If they fill in some of the gaps with OVAs and then go into a high quality mode for season two, that's pretty much a perfect adaption. As long as they don't pull a Bones and make S2 worse like happened with Chaika. Hell, Chaika is a pretty good comparison. Explosions on the front page!
I think after all these years of abstaining, I might propose to Megumin. I'm normally even a nee-san/tomboy/cougar type of guy, but she is truly the best.
And Kazuma has overshadowed Araragi as my favorite MC at least until Kizu 2. I want to share min-maxing strats with him, I want to buy him a beer, I want to be in his party. He's a true hero to those of us walking the 2D path.
