Gintama was pretty strong when it relied heavily on dick jokes and musings about having little cash.

When it gets dramatic, it slows down a lot and I have trouble paying attention.

Drama is a bit...meh.

It's generally very simplistic and follows a certain pattern.

The comedy can be god-tier

Kaguras Funeral was great.

The Silent Squad was good

Almost everything involving the Shinsengumi is great.

I don't mind the dramatic parts of the show cause they're more character driven rather than story driven. While there are over arching plots in Gintama, they don't seem to be the main focus of the show. Most of the characters are interesting enough to keep the me invested in what happens next.

The only time this is fall flat is when they introduce a new character and expect the viewer to have any emotional attachment to them (Hajime Obi as an example). Meant to be like a bro to Shinpachi (never mentioned before), comes for about 2 episodes, dies

I resumed watching Gintama and ma having a blast.

There's some cringe-worthy moments, but there's a lot of laugh to be had.

Ep282 killed me. All the Saint Seiya references. The Phoenix Chain at the end.

I quite like the serious arcs every so often, especially the Shinsengumi Civil War arc.

The problem at the moment is that there's two long, serious arcs back-to-back, with little comedic relief. Also, I really don't give a fuck about the Mimawarigumi people.

I also miss some of the early running jokes. I don't think they've mentioned strawberry milk for 200 episodes.

The monkey hunter episode was amazing. Gintoki pretending to be a "gurl" was great. Not to mention the best brick joke that took 3 episodes to set up.

This has been in my backlog for almost a decade. Missed the first year, then put it off for a while because there was so many episodes and I didn't have time. And then it just kept going. Now it has over 300 episodes. Is it worth it? Is there "good" place to start or is that just episode one?

It's fucking hilarious. One of the few consistently funny things on air. First few episodes are kind of slow going, but once the series finds it's pace and introduces the extended cast it becomes awesome.

Its well worth it. The only stipulation is that the first 20 episodes where kind of meh, with spikes of good quality in the middle. The only reason I ended up powering through the first season was because I had skipped several episodes in the middle, and laughed my ass off on them.

It took them a bit to find their groove, thats for sure.

I like the drama, that's one of the big selling point of Gintama to me.

It's a funny show, possibly the most widely diffused offensive anime there is, then a bit out of nowhere you have a serious arc with good combat, good feels, etc...

It's the mix of the two that keeps it fresh.

The problem is they advanced the setting quite a bit in one go in the manga, with the shinigami arc (regular serious arc) + civil war arc (VERY long arc) because of the way it's written. It gives you an explanation on how Gintoki survived the purges, but it instantly sparks bigger events.

Add the fact that you don't really care about the other cops (though the story of the two is nice) and a lot of side drama and you have the recent slump.

And know that they've shortened the fuck out of the shinigami arc, put fillers in, and are shrinking the civil war too. The whole thing is over 100 chapters (2 years worth of manga).
