Japan tries to do things with better quality, even with their McDonalds. I think their laws regarding what can be called beef result in them getting dramatically less fat in their burgers, which improves the flavor dramatically.
McDonalds has also been doing a makeover on their image for a while now, since it's been seen as just such garbage for so long.

They actually already tried this in Japan with McDonalds, or so I heard. They found the cost of purchasing the machines (which are probably millions of dollars) and maintaining them was fuckloads more than the cost of hiring humans (which is zero) and paying them minimum wage. Also, it would never fly in countries outside of Japan where people are more distrustful of machines and prefer a "human touch" when it comes to dining, even fast-food dining.

It might be because I only get to eat it every month or so, but the chicken and Grander are really fucking good.
There's also have a native fast food chain that makes stuff like McDonalds but it's apparently really good. The only problem is that it has only two shops in the whole country which aren't in my city.
