Chinese comics tend to be full of martial arts and fighting.

 No.675609

>>675590

>>675595

And Korean comics tend to be full of white space.

 No.675629

>>675609

Apparently that's because Korean webtoons are designed for mobile screens and vertical scrolling, so all the whitespace is supposed to make it more comfortable for mobile readers whereas manhwaka are no longer restrained by the limitations of physical page sizes. Sometimes you get some fast auto-scrolling (remember that one link to that Korean neighborhood horror manhwa?) and the whitespace can be used to build up tension.

I think it looks shit irregardless, I read manga all the time with my phone without problems (what else are you supposed to do when you have to spend 3 hours a day in a bus?) and the available manhwa is split into pages anyways. Not every comic or manga has interesting and unique page layouts either, but the omnipresent whitespace in manhwa is even more annoying if it isn't used with thought. Which is most of the time.

Dropped it once they tried to take it seriously. You can't be super serious when you have an MC who's able to subvert the entire structure of the established world.

If One Punch Man tried to actually be about a hero fighting monsters and villains, it'd have been boring as hell.

Reading an ungodly amount of titles. Let's just throw out a few I like in particular.

>Goblin is Very Strong

A low-level goblin monster got lucky and wound up at level 99. Instead of taking over the world, she decides to just continue living the goblin life, with the added bonus of being practically untouchable.

>Dr Stone

A Shonen Jump title, so you've heard of it. It teaches kids important life lessons, like how to make illegal booze and explosives.

>Yukuyuku Futari

The dates of a high school girl and a college guy. Both of them are cute. Sometimes she worries about looking too young, or being found out dating an older man.

My backlog? Just Yokohama Shopping Log.

I just had a manga dream, I dreamt I was reading manga. Here is how the manga went

>Style very similar to high score girl.

>Boy is living in a rural village, deep in the countryside.

>A new girl/family comes to town, girl starts in MCs class.

>Like Oono from high score girl, the girl never talks, she is shunned for this.

>MC somehow befriends her.

>A lot of them playing with each other out in the wild, where fantasy mixes with reality. Very much like bridge to terabithia.

>Suddenly one day, the girl is gone.

>After a few days, the classmates comes over to MC, asking, do you want to know where girl is?

>Several of the boys from class bring MC along.

>they go to an abandoned cabin deep in the woods.

>Inside, lying on a dirty mattress, is the girl. Who is naked and tied up with jumpropes.

>The boys in class apparently had been taking turns beating and raping the girl.

>The other boys leave MC in the cabin. Filled with anger and sadness he fucks the girl once.

>After this, he sits inside the cabin, hugging his knees, next to the girl who he has untied.

>After a while, MC goes to the door of the cabin, where a huge group of red dragons are standing.

>I am unsure if the dragons brought the girl with themselves or not, however they never say anything to MC.

>Some while later, at the outskirts of town, the dragons turn out to simply be humans in costumes, altered by MCs fantasy.

>They are stalking the boys from class who raped the girl, aiming at them with a rifle...

>...At which point I woke up.

What do you think? Could this be a plot in a manga?

How are you supposed to have that without sex? There's a reason homosexuality is an illness, not sexualizing what you mentioned is the abnormal path.

You're like a kid who see adults and think they've been adults their whole lifes, the 40s years old parents you see not having sex don't have much because they're old. I read through this manga over the past couple days, and even reading it all at once I'm pissed. It must have been infuriating reading all this blueballing one chapter at a time.

Also why have neither of them thought about the implications? The recently completed arc did include the subplot of the FLZs feeling fulfilled upon vanishing and that it was instinctively their "purpose", but that's hardly the end of it.

Eve is clearly an independent, intelligent being. She has wants and opinions, and hopes for the future. The FLZs can't just be some kind of illusory projection, since they can gather information the person they're attached to could not possibly learn on their own. What happens when a first love is fulfilled and the zombie vanishes? Is the zombie dead or merged with the person they represent?

Since Tarou knows about Eve and that she is self-aware, is it morally acceptable for him to ever love anyone else, even her real counterpart, knowing that it will result in either her becoming comatose, or possibly ceasing to exist altogether? Why has he not asked himself this even after all the first loves he has brought together? He has only ever thought in terms of whether he wants to part with Eve, not about what that actually means or what happens to her.

Of course the reason Tarou hasn't asked these questions is that his repeated head trauma left him clinically retarded to the point that he repeatedly sees a girl in girls' clothes, gropes her bare breast, and is told by her that she's a girl, and he doesn't notice she's a girl. I''m surprised he can still string words into sentences.

I've been working through my backlog lately, so I'll give a few impressions of what I've been reading.

>Girls Go Around

I liked it. Neat concept, and I liked that it was turned on its head a little. Typical Groundhog Day plotlines except the MC isn't the one that needs to improve to break the cycles. So he goes around fixing other people's problems and acting like a Bodhisattva before amassing a harem of cute girls. It gets a bit stale and formulaic, but then there's a twist, and the plot comes together. Fun to read.

>Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki

One mangaka's adventures in drawing her tall eyebrow waifu. She has a manlet boyfriend but their adventures are cute and innocent and heartwarming. The proportions are QUALITY sometimes and the story never really goes anywhere but it's still a nice read. I can't find anything on the mangaka's history past her name, without going into moonrune sites, but I'd like to figure out why she even made 9 volumes of this.

>Ano Ko no Ie

A cute manga that starts off by perfectly encapsulates how it feels to be a kid. Then it gets really dark and introspective and it becomes a story on exploring your boundaries and the world around you. Then it becomes a story about independence and existential fear. With cute drawings. And absolutely amazing composition. I'd recommend this to anyone, and it's a short read.

>Sen to Man

This hurt my soul in a good way.

Konosuba is good because it's a well done parody of the genre. Though I do recommend Rise of the Shield Hero. The manga version of Shield Hero is based on the published novels which differ greatly from the web novel version more or less. The web novel is fully translated and you could think of it as a rough draft to the manga version.

What are some romance manga that is genuinely interesting all the way trough? In most cases, it feels like a complete drag, with maybe one good, romantic scene every 10 chapters, something I absolutely hate. I've noticed that I might prefer shorter manga with fast development, rather than long manga that drag things on and on forever. I really liked Choku and Beast master, both short, but sweet manga. A manga that subverts this is Jitsu wa watashi wa, it is just so genuinely funny that I don't mind. Besides when some romantic development actually happens, it is huge.

So, is Umi no Misaki the pinnacle of harem mange or are there any other ones that live up to it?

Ones that I know of:

>Hare-Kon

This one seems likely to just end with the main heroine being the last one left with the hero and it's far too realistic to be a good read anyway. No one enjoys reading about shitty people being shit to each other.

>Hachi Ichi

Written by a woman (I think), so of course the great initial premise and building is ruined by constant, pointless drama and "will this heroine get NTRed?". Also, I heard the ending is incredibly weak.

>Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san

Rather boring, predictable harem with way too many female characters to ever give them proper development, and it focuses on the shitty ghost one far too much. This one will end like To Love Ru, I just know it.

>Iinazuke Kyoutei

Shitty premise and shitty characters, the art isn't even that good to justify the lewds. Might end in harem, though I imagine it will just default to open ended.

>Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari

This one is actually promising, I just wish it would release faster. At the very least it has more going on for it than other stories like it and the main heroine isn't a jealous tsundere that tries to cockblock everyone else. Though, I do expect some proper character development now that all the heroines are gathered.

>Maga Tsuki

Nice art but the ending was such a complete letdown. Did it get axed or something?

>Trinity Seven

Great protagonist that is wasted on a plot that can be best described as gibberish and very cliche heroines.

So, are there any harem manga that can rival Umi no Misaki in quality and execution?

Ane Naru Mono, both versions, both fantastic

Chi no Wadachi, last chapter got me really excited to see where it's going. not sure if we'll get some ss, crazy mom, or maybe crazy son who's imagining things

Mousou Telepathy, kind of getting sick of the no progress. apparently we'll get progress in ~90 chapters

Nande Koko ni Sensei ga, not great, only picked up because of the thick teacher in a OPT

Parallel Paradise, also not great but whatever, it's basically porn

Prison School, that sports festival arc really annoyed me. not enough to drop it obviously, but man did it drag on way too long. also Chiyo worst girl

Tomo-chan, just fuck already. and cool it with the fucking hiatuses christ

Tsurezure Children, love it. super sweet. some of the misunderstandings can be annoying, but there are enough good romances to keep me from getting furious

Umineko ep 1, Maria's uuuuuuing is still annoying even in text form. Rosa did nothing wrong

Yukionna Gensou, at this point I'll have to reread it once the final chapter is out. really nice art and an interesting enough story, plus it's overall only 5 chapters

and just finished Unbalance x2 earlier. should have stopped at chapter 73 since that ending arc was terrible. still, I really enjoyed the manga overall. in the beginning the drama it introduced felt a lot more realistic than is common in anime and manga, shame that didn't last. it's nice to see the cake winning, and I can never get enough female teacher/male student relationships also who's buying that she's a kissless virgin at 26, come on man

The latest Isekai I found interesting is the mom one. Then again, having a mom as one of the main characters or main character is not so common. Only manga in >>676624 have mom or ara main character roles. But if they become a huge success, then the market will flood with mom manga and then it's back to the drawing board with the next big thing. Japan's flaw is that they want to replicate the success of something successful rather than trying something new. Konosuba's genius is that it's a parody of the Isekai genre and pokes fun at the cliches starting with the ironic title. Years back I remember when Isekai was still budding with shows like MÄR which was my favorite of the genre. Nowadays most Isekai have mc's get hit by trucks, taken to another world and then get on an OP powertrip to the point that there's no real challenge for them, and unlike MÄR these Isekai feel more like cookie cutter fantasy JRPG's. Be nice if there's an Isekai to Scifi world or something new with the genre.

>We need the next big thing or this industry will surely die.

You sound like a fucking Hollywood executive.

Isekai is on its way out as the parodies start to roll in. We don't need a next big thing. I'd much rather have lots of little small ideas being thrown at the wall and seeing what sticks to keep things fresh. As long as any shmuck capable of writing or drawing can put out something then this medium will stay fresh and interesting. The opposite is what's currently happening in the western entertainment sphere, where you have a bunch of big corporate-driven studios shitting out uncreative turds one after the other and getting by on brand recognition and marketing, leaving all the smaller and independent works to be ignored.

Anime, manga and LNs are in a pretty good place right now, where you get short-lived trends that don't completely saturate the market and even the less creative works usually have at least some unique aspect or gimmick.

 No.682412

>>682394

Actually, what's happening in Japan and Hollywood are precisely the same.

Thing is, a novel, manga, anime, is much more cheaper than a movie, so you have more quantity, but we have a quality problem here.

If you can't see this you're a beautiful newfag.

 No.682419

>>682412

You're talking out of your ass, and your accusation of newfaggotry is bullshit because that doesn't even come into this.

The situation is not the same and I've explained why in the previous post. There is also no problem with the quality, unless you are actually comparing anime to western entertainment which is just retarded. Quality is mostly a matter of budget, at least theoretically, and in general Japanese entertainment comes in all sorts of budget ranges, and it's entirely possible to adjust to strict budgetary constraints and still come out with something entertaining and interesting. Comedy is actually better when it looks cheap, for example. Meanwhile in the west the vast majority of mainstream entertainment is overall higher budget but creatively dead. They may have better technical quality objectively but if it's all in service of something with no soul it's meaningless. This isn't always the case but it's usually the case with the major works of entertainment.

Being cheap doesn't mean being bad, and in some cases it can even mean being better. Limitations spark creativity, and creativity is what I appreciate.

Cutting through more of my backlog, finished Himegoto 19 no Seifuku the other day.

It features four characters: Cute Tomboy, her Beta Childhood Friend, Controlling Bitch wearing a sailor uniform, and Weird Crossdresser. Everyone is 19 because it's the year before they become legal adults and they're all worried about their adolescence going away.

Cute Tomboy goes to a university but finds that her Beta Childhood Friend followed her along. Beta Childhood Friend treats her like a guy, and she plays along because she doesn't want to hurt his feelings since they've been friends a long time. She struggles with this because she really just wanted to be girly and escape from Beta Childhood Friend.

Then she encounters Controlling Bitch, who enjoys her cuteness and tomboyness. Cute Tomboy also finds out that a notorious lech and ladies' man is actually a man-lady who crossdresses. To make things a little weirder, Weird Crossdresser is infatuated with Controlling Bitch and cosplays as her. Cute Tomboy decides to let Weird Crossdresser teach her how to dress like a girl since he can dress like a girl better than most girls. In return, Weird Crossdresser gets to have a cute female friend he can feel close to without having to hide the weird crossdressing.

After a few chapters of this both Controlling Bitch and Weird Crossdresser convince Cute Tomboy to just let her beta orbiter childhood friend go, in the most brutal way possible. He then goes into a depression spiral and becomes a hikkiNEET for the rest of the manga until the last few chapters.

So this weird love triangle ensues and things get pretty fucking degenerate, but that turns around when they all move in together and stay in a love triangle limbo. Cute Tomboy gets to act girly, Weird Crossdresser gets to hang out with Cute Tomboy and Controlling Bitch, and Controlling Bitch gets to live with Cute Tomboy and blackmail Weird Crossdresser.

After a while they realize just how tremendously fucked up they all are, how amazingly mentally ill Controlling Bitch really is, and Weird Crossdresser has an epiphany. He never really wanted to be a girl after all, he was just confused and fucked up and didn't know how to handle masculinity. He stops crossdressing and starts tackling his masculinity head-on. Cute Tomboy comes to terms with her own femininity and her crush on Weird Crossdresser, and the two become a straight non-fucked up couple.

It's a good story, I'd recommend it.

Read Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan the other day. I was really tempted to stop reading after the first chapter or two, but I stuck with it because it was so short.

Objectively looking at it I can say that the story is kind of hamfisted and is full of contrived conveniences to make you as sympathetic as possible with the main characters (she may seem like a rich snobby bitch, but she was raped so feel sorry for her! he may seem like a ruthless killer, but look at how troubled his past was. he was completely justified in killing the man, the women and child were just an accident, so feel sorry for him!), and that it's really not deserving of the huge amounts of praise it gets because it's just another over the top drama with cookie cutter characters, but I'd be lying if I said that conclusion didn't make me a bit teary eyed

It wasn't him being executed that did it either, it was simply her playing the piano for him that punched me, which again, how convenient that her piano playing when she was younger just happened to be the one thing that made him happy during his troubled youth!

I find it crazy that this is one of the highest rated manga on both MAL and MU, that tons of people think it's the greatest story ever told, and I saw a few people say something along the lines of "I never second guessed the death penalty before reading this, but now I think it's wrong!" which is just fucking crazy because the story paints this absolutely perfect and incredibly unrealistic scenario for the sole purpose of eliciting that exact response, and it's so brazen that I can't believe people are fooled by it. I didn't hate it and if you're in the mood for short and over the top heartstring bait, you could do worse than this.
