Isekai is just a way to set up a fish out of water protagonist in a fantasy world. Since it is a fantasy world, the rules and specifics of how it works needs to be explained to the audience, and the protagonist being just as clueless as them is a good way to do that, along with making him more relatable.

The problem I think is that most of them are just really cheap and badly written chuuni power fantasies. I like isekai just because I like interesting fantasy worlds, but often they aren't that interesting. With the success of Konosuba and a few others, all the hacks are coming out of the woodwork and trying to recreate that success thinking that all they need is a premise that's just isekai but with a twist, instead of interesting worlds, well-written characters, engaging plots; good writing in general. I don't think people hate the idea, they just hate the uncreative garbage bad authors are putting out as a result of its popularity.

But aren't most isekai also haremshit?

>>Everyone else wont stop bitching about it and want haremshit back

I would rather every anime be about amish slice-of-life than get haremshit back.

theres two types - chuuni power fantasy with harems or patricians choice which is something like only sense online where the focus is crafting and worldbuilding.

Best isekai is Naruku no Adu.

older "trapped in an other world" used to be better since it had an actual story beyond the isekai gimick.

nowadays its just bandwagon jumping on whats popular

>light novels

stuff like konsouba, re:zero, grimgar etc. seem more like a reaction to the power fantasy stuff

focusing more on the consequenses and problems of being transported.

but you are correct about the hacks not getting that and just trying to copy paste it.

The overall concept is inherently attractive. Before the Isekai trend hit the current fever pitch it's at right now, there had been books about this kind of thing for almost a century. The Barsoom series, first published in 1912, was about a guy who gets accidentally teleported to Mars where he had super powers and instantly became the hero to everyone and got all the hot girls. I even remember reading a few books that were very isekai-ish when I was growing up. Stuff like "teen kid gets teleported to a medieval world and must save the day with his modern smarts!"

My biggest problem with the current trend of isekai stories is that so many of them show an incredibly poor understanding of game design and RPGs as a vidya genre. Most of them have outlandish, impossibly broken mechanics that everyone in the game world could have easily figured out how to exploit, but they're all apparently too dumb. Then the MC gets dropped in and he's like "oh, if we just do [REALLY EASY THING] we can get infinite XP and Gold!" or "If I just level up this one skill, I'm unstoppable!".. and as a fa/tg/uy, nothing schisms my 'tism more than shitty game design.

Read Only Sense Online or that one with the lewd fox queen to calm your tism.

That only happens in that shitty Cellphone one.

Heresy Spider and Exterminator are also like that.

Kumoko is cute enough to carry it though.

I don't see the appeal in having OP main characters. You either remove any tension because you know the good guys can never lose, or you just make the bad guys equally overpowered and you've basically gone back to a normal scenario except all the numbers are inflated like in a shitty MMO.

File: 64b9bcafdd5e2d4⋯.png (476.84 KB, 1025x367, 1025:367, 1460169149702.png)

Yeah, the best parts of the series are her being cute, strategizing, and musing about her options while being cute.

My biggest problem with "I got teleported into an MMO" isekai is that rather than make me feel like the character is growing and getting stronger/smarter/whatever they lazily finish a fight and say

>look at that [list of skills] leveled up so I can do X, Y and Z now

>Good thing I leveled up [skill] otherwise that would have been a problem

Heresy spider is a great example of this. Re:Monster is obviously the best example of this but Re:Monster is the best example of everything wrong with isekai so it's unfair to use it.

>Only sense online is patrician

That's a load of crap. It's fundamentally the same problems. MC is the only person to take certain senses because everyone views them as useless and is the only one to buy farmland because everyone views it as useless etc etc and then surprise they are actually useful and MC becomes well regarded for this. Same with the other one with the fairy queen and dragon queen harem where the MC is an archer crafter and everyone thought it was useless but MC actually becomes the most famous player because of it. It's just crap regardless of how you spin the emphasis.

Thats based on the other characters being stupid. The bad ones are the "oh i have this unique cheat ability nobody else has"

Isekai where everyone else except the hikki are idiots, but the universe is expected to be taken seriously and not as a comedy, are just as bad.

The best stories are all about characters utilizing really shitty powers in amazing ways. We need more of those.

Would you watch an isekai story if there were a dickhead GM involved? Like a Hand of God to slap down uppity protags looking for cheap exploits and being really autistic about maintaining the intended roleplaying experience?

thats heresy spider.

Well then I should really start reading that shouldn't I? pls no bully

Aren't Heresy Spider's broken abilities due to an actual glitch? I've only read the manga so maybe I'm wrong, but a few of her abilities genuinely appear to be bugged. Plus it sort of makes sense that's she's taking advantage of exploits nobody else is, since the only ones with access to her abilities aren't normally capable of thinking about thinks like minmaxing or long-term strategy.

As far as I can tell it's at least justified in her case.

When she gets out of the dungeon she's born in it's no longer worth it to read that.

Just because demon king loli becomes the new baka?

What do you call 'Isekai except it isn't isekai because all the characters including the protagonist(s) come from that world'?

I miss that genre.

>only sense online

>literally the first pic if you jewgle it is a poster of it in the typical haremshit style

Evil Dead III aka Army of Darkness was a pretty good Western isekai.

That's why I like the one with the shield dude and his raccoon waifu.

I'm waiting for a well done JDF isekai

Read the light novel, my advice is don't get too attached. There's a point where the story hits the shit and only gets worse.

I like isekai. Now if only they'd update and finish their shit. Fuck having 200 stories with 10 chapters each. What's the point?

Though there are some I dislike. The idea of the MC not having special powers beyond their wits and modern knowledge is good in theory, but in practice they're always aggravating little shits.

>Realist Hero rebuilds Kingdom

Babby-tier understanding of politics and the most idealized world imaginable. Also,

>strongest fighter in entire country is a woman

>Release that Witch

Chink MC uses his understanding of SCIENCE to build up his own kingdom. I liked this one a fair bit, except that the MC uses SCIENCE instead of science. He just assumes a bunch of shit instead of empirically trying to make sure. "There's no such thing as witches. Oh wait there are. There's no such thing as devils..." etc. It didn't fuck up anywhere noticeably, but still it annoyed me.

>that one ln where mc gets summoned to be the Prince Concubine for a Queen in magicland arabia and he does fuck all except NEET around.

Did exactly what it said it would and did it reasonably well. But still fucking hated it.

I went in wanting a spider waifu.

>story is superb at Kumoko being alone and having monologues and tsukkomi'ing at her surroundings

>super cute as spider, with the build up to the eventual pay off of her becoming an arachne

>Kumoko out of the caves and she becomes a goddess

>gets completely human body and essentially never does spidery stuff

>forced to constantly interact with other people and we completely lose the tsukkomi aspect and her internal chatter, effectively changing her entire personality since she no longer acts the same

>went from How 2 Exploit RPG Mechanics 4 Fun & Profit => There are like, a billion gods and the stats don't matter, like at all. All those maxed out skills you got? Gone. But hey, you're a goddess so gratz?

10/10 until she gets out and then it just keeps going down. Quit by the time the ogre had the fight with the vampire. Just didn't give a fuck about anything anymore in the setting.

Western isekai is better. Royal Road as a lot of good shit.

Earth freezes over as the Sun dies. Archmage reincarnates himself into other world. Acquire loving wife, be the most annoying little shit around and Archmage the fuck out of all the old power players while having the time of your life on a world that is NOT a frozen hellish wasteland.

>Savage Divinity

Guy gets reincarnated as a slave in Not!China. Gets taken in by the Mongolian mercenaries with giant ferrets. Great worldbuilding, cool powers and politics, mc gets slapped down for his shit whenever he gets out of hand. Downsides is that all the love interests are infertile kemono rapebabies and that the MC is cockblocking himself with the love interest all the while he goes drinking and whoring with his rich buddies.

> are just really cheap and badly written chuuni power fantasies

If you don't like chuuni gtfo, even bad chuuni shit is watchable I couldn't be happier about isekai domination.

I think the thing with the Spider is that the Spider is sapient, unlike her brother and sisters. I would naturally assume that the path of strength for monsters is much simpler and easier to abuse than the one for humans. Like a lion that has given the intellect of a man, but with the ability to shoot webs out of their ass.

So far, Dr. Stone is doing something like this and it's perhaps the best possible implementation of the cliche. There's no magic. There's no omnipresent game system controlling things. The guy is just crazy fucking smart and autistic enough to work his ass off for months on end to get results that conform to the basic laws of reality.

I think the main problem is that in the West we have a shitload of stuff to compare it to, while for Japan it's more or less 'new'. Fuck me, Quag Keep was written in the (late) seventies and it has many of the same highlights and glaring problems modern Isekai WN/LN have today.

There are too many LNs, books are nice and all but what makes japshit not-shit is the imagery and LNs don't have pretty pictures to look at and they aren't animated. When it comes to LNs I might aswell just read hundreds of years of 30000x better western fiction instead.

Don't you say that, don't you ever even hint that.

Clearly he hasn't seen Hellsing either.

>that one where mc gets summoned to be the Prince Concubine for a Queen

Risou no Himo Seikatsu. I read up to where the baby was born and stopped. The politics in that one was really interesting because of how careful the mc needs to say his words carefully otherwise it would be taken out of context, but that is all it freaking was. It was so boring to read that I was hoping that the issue with the baby being born would at least start a war because of the mc's bloodline was a mix from both kingdoms. Nothing happens.

Isekai is just power fantasy. The setting comes second. Not much different from yearly XX century pulp-fiction, really.

Please anticipate my newest work, My Dumb Ass Got Trapped Inside an Isekai Manga, coming next leap year

Speaking of dumb asses. Where's the Yamcha series?

Thanks for the recommendations, I'm really enjoying Beyond. It's always such a surprise to see the contrast between the mindset of two different people, though I suspect it could just be that the more simpler Light Novels are the ones translated the most. Light novels lack the strange and ingenious thought pattern that western authors, at least the more gifted of them, have. Perhaps it's due to a different set of expectations? Do the Japanese social rejects and incompetents fall to artistry or is it an actively looked well upon profession? The intelligence needed to create Hunter x Hunter is an excellent one so that may not be the case. I submit that I may have a bias outlook on this. I hope the loss in translation isn't contributing to my outlook on the Japs. I don't like the idea of having to learn a language just to watch and read the same mediocre works.

Not all of them. Konosuba has pretty dumb characters and most of their problems they bring upon themselves, and usually have to struggle to get anything done. Grimgar is also pretty much the opposite of a power fantasy, featuring a bunch of clueless incompetent losers just trying to make a living.

The problem with Isekai is how similar they all are.

>the main character is likely somebody with nothing special about them and nothing to live for

>they accidentally die under a truck

>reborn with cheat ability

>for some reason the girls like him now

>skill level ups replace character progression

What's funny is that Re;Monster actually broke the first one by making the protag be an overpowered alpha in the previous life as well.

If you want to do an isekai like this at least change the setting. Despite Youjo Senki being a faily standart deal I enjoyed it immensely due to the setting.

The worst isekai idea is "being trapped in a videogame". If everyone around you is a fucking bot scripted to act a certain way I'd probably fucking kill myself instead of coexisting with these fuckers. What is the point of riskng your actual life to save npcs from enemies?

Does anyone know why it's always videogames? In western fantasy it's usually either magic world or sci-fi, in japan it's videogames/fantasy, and in russia it's always ww2. Picrelated is a book called "Comrade Fuhrer", in which a modern day russki gets transformed into the body of Hitler and has to sabotage SS from the inside. Weird shit.

I agree with your choices. Seems like most isekai stories I enjoy are either girl-focused or not taking themselves seriously. Strange.

But at least in here I can punch a fuker or hurt his feelings. Can you imagine living in fucking Oblivion, with everybody having two lines for dialogue and six voice actors for all of them? Having them run into lava because of shit AI? That's the real fucking nightmare.

IIRC, as far as Re:Monster goes, the only reason he's broken as fuck in the new fantasy universe is that he had magical sci-fi powers in the original one, which is neat. If only it actually capitalized on the concept.

Regional differences in Isekai-type stories differ based on who sets the precedent.

Not really isekai, but yeah. Read it till the one novel where its about the one noblewoman. It just seemed like the obligatory "muh women are equal" bull and I was losing interest anyhow, what with the main character marrying a jew.

Gustav and his Finns were awesome, though. Funny thing is, they still scare children in parts of Germany with the Finnish cavalry. "Those hakkapelitas will come and grab you and drag you into their hot, dark steam rooms where they beat you red and raw with their sticks if you don't behave."

Light Novels are light reading, don't expect anything too deep from them. The closest Western equivalent would be YA (Young Adult) novels. Actual Japanese fantasy novels don't get translated because no one makes manga/anime out of them; the novel-reading demographic is generally separate from anime/manga fandom. That's an underhanded way of saying most anime/manga fans don't fucking read, read some fucking books you illiterate niggers

The closest thing that's been translated are the Legend of the Galactic Heroes novels. They're not the deepest stories around but at least the translation quality is light-years ahead of whatever you can find off some random fan website.

Can we stop the "I'm so intellectual because I read" meme? Experiencing fantasy stories through the cheapest form of media available doesn't make you smart.

People who read comics instead of books are perceived as less intelligent because they prefer looking at pictures instead of imagining scenes from a text description of them. Similarly, anime/cartoon fans are considered less intelligent than comic readers because they prefer seeing the action happen instead of imagining it based on keyframes and written sound effects. And then live-action fags are the worst because they can't immerse themselves in a story unless the characters are an actual real human actor. It's levels of intelligence, and novel readers are at the top because reading a book composed entirely of text requires the most brainpower and they enjoy doing it. You have to imagine everything. The only thing higher on the smart scale is writing the books.

And whomst in their right mind would think such a thing?

Since when does imagination correlate with intelligence? With art you have an artist trying to bring across a vision. Having you as the audience use your imagination to fill in the gaps the author couldn't get across doesn't make you as an audience member more intelligent, it just makes the work less complete. Having more of the image means that much more art for you to experience.

When I watch anime I don't think "This would look much better in my head", nobody does that. I see art, created by artists, coming together to form a larger piece of art which I can then take in and evaluate, both emotionally and in terms of technique and mastery. Appreciating art at that level to my mind takes more intelligence than just imagining art that isn't there. There's no guarantee your imagination produces anything of quality either, which is why not everyone is an artist.

I'll grant that a lot of knowledge comes in book, but we're talking about fiction, not facts. There is no justification for people to act smug and superior just because they prefer to indulge in make-believe via words on a page rather than drawings or film.

File: 368aacc33181738⋯.pdf (73.93 KB, Cunningham-What Reading Do….pdf)

It turns out that reading a lot (even "fantasy stories through the cheapest form of media") has a significant effect on a person's vocabulary, which in turn significantly affects their verbal skills, which ends up doing everything from helping someone understand advanced topics to keeping their brain limber as they get older. So "I'm so intellectual because I read" isn't a meme, it's true. Everyone should read more.

Unless you don't talk, then all the reading in the world won't help your vocal cords atrophy.

In this case "verbal skills" doesn't just refer to speaking skills, it refers to communication in general.

Because it's not like any other form of media conveys communication in the exact same way, if not better, right? Even when you adapt a book into a film or anime and you lift the dialogue 1:1, it stops being a way to develop your vocabulary just by virtue of being interpreted by actors, right?

Well if you're watching a movie/anime with the same dialogue,

1. You don't see the word spelled, only hear it.

2. You miss out on all the other words in the book that describe actions, environments, and character features and traits. That's a shitload of adjectives and nouns not added to your vocabulary.

So, yeah. Git gud and read.

On the other hand, Albedo has true, pure, unadulterated love for him, as written by Ainz-sama himself (Sasuga!).

Literal corpses.

>it makes me want a good MMO to play

I know, right? OSO is too impossibly complicated to be possible, but what baffles me is that it's one of the more reasonably designed MMOs in the Isekai genre. Something like SAO, for instance, is pure fucking retardation written by a drooling moron who has never played an MMO in his life and seems to have gotten all of his knowledge on gaming from reading other bad series about MMOs and vidya.

We could all be so lucky.

I wonder if any of this applies to reading on imageboards.

Fuck that then and fuck that now.

Depends on which boards, I'd think. I grew up playing lots of SNES RPGs and my vocabulary was significantly better than my peers for pretty much my entire career. Good vocabulary leads to good articulation of otherwise abstract thoughts and feelings. The best way to get better at that is to talk with and read more, which further expands your understanding and intelligence.

>Perceived Hero who's really a ball of self-interest?

Not really though. Both Cain and Tanya do insane shit for the cause, and were on suicide missions multiple times. They are real heroes, but don't think of themselves as such.

Ignoring the VR in OSO, the rest of it is possible to make, the main problem would be how to tie the benefits from the sense to other sense's like with farsights use, which would probably cause lots of skills not connecting to it when they should and other skills connecting to it when they shouldn't.

But you are right about other Isekai's they are written badly or made too be too good to even ever exist

It was worth it just for the Code Geass level "HAHA YOU'VE ACTIVATED MY TRAP" level of bullshit.

It is less Code Geass level of "HAHA YOU'VE ACTIVATED MY TRAP" bullshit and more Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 1 level of "HAHA YOU'VE ACTIVATED MY TRAP" bullshit.

We all want to treat kid gohan like a piece of meat but calm down my man.

What's the difference?

Lin is clearly the best. It annoys me how Rain treats her.

Rain a shit. Though it's funny how all of his otherwordly memories influence(little though they are) only serve to hinder him. Dropped it at the point he got some inner twin from beyond the wall and started letting him do the fighting.

Also, all the waifu's are barren so fuck that. Though Lin is top tier in all other regards.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is uses rules or mechanics that aren't previously explained or hinted.

I still maintain that No Game No Life is NEET/otaku pandering garbage for retards.

Here is an example of one of my favorite Isekai.

Code Gayass had a protagonist who was so smart that he was playing pandimension 10D Chess at all times, allowing him to set up ridiculous contingencies and stuff that amounted to "I knew you knew that I'd know that you know that I was going to guess that you'd know that I was going to plan this all along!"

Yu-Gi-Oh asspulls came strictly in the form of "here's a card (which has never been seen, mentioned, or implied to exist) that does the only conceivable thing that would allow me to win right now, after every previous turn has had me losing badly!"

When you put it that way, Lelouch sounds more fun.

1) not unless you speak Japanese.

Thank you fucks so much for telling me about OSO. That's a great comfy manga.

Shame about the meme-TL though. "Swiggety-swooty, thanks for the looty", etc. The translator's site is a tumblr page that lists "their" preferred pronouns.

Every single story is like that. The main character are all implausibly broken for whatever reason.

>godly luck, mega treasures/quest rewards falls into lap

>godly talents/genetics

>godly bonus XP

>godly exploits that clearly don't work that way

>The translator's site is a tumblr page that lists "their" preferred pronouns.

Only the dead can know peace from this evil.

Isn't that the point of storytelling, to follow someone exceptional?

>10d chess

>accidentally orders a genocide cuz the writers wrote themselves into a hole

>Everyone else wont stop bitching about it and want haremshit back

I don't really care if authors keep on making these stories, but I would enjoy it more if they tried some more wild ideas, especially the ones that write the MMO ones.

>accidentally orders a genocide cuz the writers wrote themselves into a hole

I actually kind of admire the writers for keeping the character so consistent and following their logical path that they realized the only way to continue drama was to pull something out of their ass.

Reminder that the imouto canonically does not wear anything under her holy armour.

>It was all a dream

>He still learned lessons and remained honorable after waking up

That movie was too memorable for how stupid it was

How about this idea for an Isekai story that isn't just chuuni power fantasy and has an interesting world?

>protagonist dies and is reborn in a fantasy world

>he starts off as a baby with no special talents or items

>it turns out many people from his old world have been reincarnating into this fantasy world, they tend to form secret societies which the protagonist joins as a teen

>They spend their time trying to recreate technologies from their previous lives or otherwise making this world more like the previous one

>sometimes these societies bring back past grudges from the past, or religions or rebellious idealogies

>because of this, these societies and their technological artifacts tend to be viewed as heresies and are hunted by the church and the three Furies, angels who have descended onto the planet to hunt down the guilty

>These Furies take particular interest in the protagonist for some reason, going to unreasonable lengths to capture him

>it turns out it's the protagonists past incarnations fault that these reincarnations are happening, his past incarnation used magic to reincarnate into a less shit world but it has caused souls to be regularly exchanged between the two worlds during the reincarnation process, this fault also stops people from forgetting their past lives

>the protagonist still has no special powers though, those were wiped during the reincarnation process, all he has now are some memories and some modern technology to help him against all his enemies

Seriously, would this be a good idea?

File: 6c88b01b4731f95⋯.jpg (63.65 KB, 640x480, 4:3, cham gives shou a lapdance.jpg)

I like it. Sounds kinda like Dunbine, except good.

Could be good. Most isekai these days rely on a hook to pull people in, which this one doesn't seem to have. This means you'd just have to have good enough writing to keep it floating.

Basically, I'd read it but as it is it has nothing that would keep me reading if the writing didn't keep me into it.

File: 753a01c7ec03032⋯.jpg (24.5 KB, 327x316, 327:316, when kaworu calls you gay,….jpg)

I wouldn't mind it at all, if the trope didn't obnoxiously apply in-game shit to the world

It doesn't seem like it's a person trapped in a another world, if things have levels and people have only certain sets of movements they can use in a fight and must "unlock" basic shit, it just seems like people playing a fucking videogame.

What if the twist is that the "other world" was the protagonist in a coma after the truck accident? And the reason for all the video game stuff is because they are an Otaku so even their coma fantasies are full of video games.

I think Grimgar does a pretty good job at making the world feel realistic while still incorporating some videogame elements.

The people of that world are totally in on it, they get new fighters from a magical tower with amnesia and strange clothes? Those fuckers know they're taking people from another world to die in their shitty war and they dont care.

Another reason I liked Overlord so much: it focuses on worldbuilding gameplay elements instead of the stupid crunchy bullshit that contemporary MMOs actually revolve around.

File: 890926907fdcc27⋯.jpg (46.52 KB, 352x500, 88:125, smug motherfucker.jpg)

The most entertainingly retarded isekai I've read is probably Skill Taker. The MC is literally the most OP motherfucker in the world and the author in the light novel won't shut up about how he mastered over 150 types of martial arts and every sport in existence that may or may not be useful to know in a fight, all at the age of 16. One time he manages to astound the locals by throwing a spear, because in this medieval society nobody has ever thought to throw a pointy stick at someone else.

Then there's the fact that his entire reason for doing all the quests and shit he does is to get money and build a massive harem of cute animu grill sex slaves.

The complete retards who've taken over the translation have killed what little enjoyment there was to get from it with their 2007-tier narutard antics and all links going through adfly-variants.

That at least sounds entertaining. If the MC is basically a god he might as well do whatever the fuck he wants. That's also the saving grace of the Smartphone anime, MC is OP and has a comfy time with it

>build a massive harem of cute animu grill sex slaves.

They're not even trying to hide the escapism anymore.

The entire thing reads like it was written by a 14-year old. It's hilarious.

What's the problem?

Don't worry. He's still a boy in real life; it's only his character that's a girl, so he gets to immerse himself in being the cute girl everyone wants to be, while not having any of the internal conflict of true genderbending.

And almost all of the people who hit on him are also girls anyway.

>escapism is bad

No one said that.
