Welcome to the Sund/a/y /jp/Cinema Club!

This thread is for discussion of all things related to Japanese films. Let's explore and discover this underrepresented part of Nip culture. What movies have you watched and which are your favorites? What directors or actors do you enjoy? Got anything on your backlog?

I'm hoping we could use this thread for 2D as well since there are so many good movies we never get to talk about because they don't warrant their own thread. If you've never watched a Japanese movie before and are hesitant to do so because you swore off 3D films for good - you're in for a treat. There is scenery and visuals of such beauty they will make your eyes water. There's the Jap humor, there's cool action scenes and there's endearing stories. Most importantly, it will compliment your anime and manga in giving you another piece of intimate understanding about something you love. All wrapped up in a clean package free of westernshit cancer.

In addition, every Sunday we have a movie stream. Two movies are shown with an intermission between them. The first is a lighter movie, usually a kaiju or tokusatsu movie. The second is a heavier movie, by directors like Kurosawa or Kitano. In general these are more serious but not always. The movies start at 6:00 EST. We've switched to using cytu.be since it's a bit more reliable than streamchan and until stated otherwise the link will be the same. You will need to install a userscript on your browser in order for the movies to play if you haven't already.

Stream link: https://cytu.be/r/sundaycinema

Userscript: https://cytu.be/js/cytube-google-drive.user.js

Borrowing from the original OP because he put it quite nicely.

Today's movies are:

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 also featuring Rodan

Tampopo, a movie about ramen

Godzilla will be on in twenty minutes. Total runtime of both movies and intermission is about four hours.

Godzilla now over. Tampopo on in five minutes.

I saw Tanpopo while flying across the Pacific; It was a very enjoyable movie.

I'm sure the person next to you loved that shrimp scene.

I bet you were very hungry by the end of the flight.

Sunday's movies will be:

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla which is exactly what it sounds like

Ososhiki aka The Funeral by Juzo Itami, director of Tampopo; this was the first movie he directed

Stream will be up at around 5:30 today, as usual.

Looking forward to it. I have alcohol prepared.

I'll be finishing off the last of my sake. Should be fun.

Total runtime will be about 4 hours, intermission included. I have an episode of the Aum Shinrikyo anime on for now.

Godzilla on now.

Godzilla now over. Ososhiki on in a few minutes.

Another excellent stream anon, thanks.

Ososhiki now over. What was supposed to be a funny movie turned out to be a lot more serious than I thought. It was good. Thanks to everybody who showed, see you all next week.

>I fall asleep right before the stream starts and miss the whole thing.

I find this odd because I had a full night's sleep the night before and it wasn't even that hot today. It must be the Yakuza keeping me from learning their secrets. They kill the director and poisoned me.

This Juzo Itami movie actually didn't have any yakuza in it, but the movie of his we'll be watching next week is the one that first got him attacked by the yakuza and hospitalized (he also made a movie about his time in the hospital). This was a few years before they made him commit suicide. If you really want to make sure, set an alarm that's what I do.

Tomorrow's movies will be:

Godzilla vs. Destroyah, the final Heisei movie. This one is great in all numbers of ways and probably the best of the Heisei movies. Don't miss even a second of it if you can. A fitting end for the Heisei series.

Minbo no Onna, a movie about a hotel owner harassed by the yakuza. So good the yakuza slashed the director (as detailed above).

I hope to see you there.

Stream will be up in four hours.

Stream is up now. Godzilla on in 30 minutes.

I'm gonna download Minbo no Onna and watch it over the next week so I'm not out of the loop.

Thanks to everybody who showed, see you all next week.

It's a great movie anon, I think you'll like it. I'll probably make a few webms out of some scenes later.

>If Gomera had so many movies, wouldn't there be a sacrifice in quality in exchange for quantity?

Gamera definitely sacrifices quality for quantity in the Showa era. Don't watch the fourth, fifth, and eight movie because they contain extensive stock footage. Especially the eighth. The best Gamera movies are the first three. There was also a trilogy of remakes in the 90s but I haven't seen those so I can't say anything about them yet.

>Also please post more charts if any, I want to gain knowledge of good cinema.

Here's what I have for general Japanese movies.

Your best introduction to Japanese cinema will be Kurosawa. Specifically start with:

1. Rashomon

2. Seven Samurai (long but worth it)

3. Yojimbo

Then watch his contemporary dramas like:

1. Drunken Angel

2. Ikiru

3. High and Low (aka Heaven and Hell)

Then either finish all Kurosawa's movies or start looking into other directors from the time period like Ozu, Naruse, or Mizoguchi or more modern directors like Kitano and Itami. And once you find a director you like watch all his stuff, then see who he was influenced by or who he influenced and your backlog will continue to grow.

For kaiju movies, start with the classics:

1. Godzilla (1954)

2. Mothra vs. Godzilla

3. Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster

4. Gamera

5. Gamera vs. Barugon

6. Gamera vs. Gyaos

No, but whoever made it is a man after my own heart.

> Gamera

I was just referencing the Conan Gomera, but didn't knew he was an actual fictional character and not just a fictional fictional character.

Sunday's Movies will be:

Godzilla 2000: The second reboot of the Godzilla franchise, not to be confused with the American movie released around the same time. This movie kicks off the Millenium series where most of the films aren't connected in any way.

Daibyonin: Juzo Itami's satire of the Japanese medical system based on his own experiences in the hospital after the yakuza attack.

Stream will be up in about 3 hours.

File: 09f678fdd3fe3a7⋯.png (3.96 KB, 455x37, 455:37, Untitled.png)

Stream may end up postponed until I can figure out why Drive doesn't want to process these videos.

We were also having problems with video processing for the loli stream this afternoon.

May want to look at backup video hosts. Maybe Dropbox? If not, raw file hosting on a webserver, or blob/object storage with a cloud provider could work.

Good to know that it's not just something on my end. Thanks for the tip, I'll look into those.

Oh good, I took a nap and would have missed it.

So it seems like Dropbox isn't going to work either, cytube doesn't accept Dropbox links (and the free memory space for Dropbox is quite small). I'm going to keep working on it, but there probably won't be a stream tonight. I should have it working by next week. Sorry about that.

Oh well, strange that both the loli stream and this one is having similar problems hopefully google aren't targeting those specifically.

That is unforunate, but thank you for trying. I hope you have a good week!

Here's what I managed to dig up, looks like there aren't many other supported video host options.

For raw file hosting:

>H.264 encoded MP4 and FLV, VP8/VP9 encoded WebM, and Ogg/Theora videos can be added as a direct link to the video file

From a really, really quick search, DigitalOcean Spaces looks affordable, $5+ a month, and isn't supporting the cloud oligarchs:

Probably just a problem with their servers transcoding video. That kind of thing happens and will likely be fixed when people get back to work tomorrow. It isn't completely breaking the service, since files can still be uploaded/downloaded.

The files are working as normal so the stream will be up at the usual time.

Stream is now up. Godzilla on in about 20 minutes.

Godzilla now over. Daibyonin will be on in 10 minutes.

Thanks anon

Daibyonin now over. Thanks to everyone who showed. Next week will be the next Godzilla movie and another Itami movie. Hope to see you there.

/r/ Linda Linda Linda.

Can we watch this sometime? It features one of my favorite nip bosozoku punk rock songs and is what the God Knows sequence in Haruhi parodied.

Sure, why not? I'd like to see it.

I've found a watermarked download hard-subbed in English and a high-quality torrent soft-subbed in Russian. I'll keep looking for a good English version, but the watermarked copy should do in a pinch. We'll probably watch it during the stream after this Sunday.

Thanks, I look forward to it.

File: 030ae04ecdb6ec8⋯.jpg (121.69 KB, 722x1024, 361:512, event_showing03.jpg)

Tomorrow's movies will be:

Godzilla vs. Megaguirus in which Godzilla fights giant bugs

Marusa no Onna about a female tax collector (naturally played by Tampopo). Apparently Tampopo was actually Itami's wife which explains why she's in all of his movies. Her real name is Miyamoto Nobuko.

This makes her playing the wife of an adulterer in both Ososhiki and Daibyonin even more interesting since shortly before Itami died, claims that he was having an extramarital affair were published. The note he left denied any involvement in an extramarital affair. And of course his suicide was probably forced by the yakuza:

>Itami Juzo, directed the first realistic film about the yakuza, Minbo, in 1992. Goto-gumi members attacked him for doing it, slashing his face open. He would later tell the New York Times in an interview, “They cut very slowly, they took their time. They could have killed me if they wanted to.” Eventually they did. On December 20, 1997, after a weekly magazine wrote about his extra-marital affair, he allegedly killed himself. A former member of the Goto-gumi told me in 2008, “We set it up to stage his murder as a suicide. We dragged him up to the rooftop and put a gun in his face. We gave him a choice: jump and you might live or stay and we’ll blow your face off. He jumped. He didn’t live.”

A genius like him was too good for this world.

Stream will be up in about 3 hours.

Sorry I couldn't make it this week. Had some stupid 3D stuff to do this time.

Marusa no Onna now over. Thanks to everyone who showed up, it was classic Itami. We'll probably take a break from him for the next few movies.

That's alright, just don't miss your movie next week.

Tomorrow's movies will be:

Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack: a.k.a. GMK. Godzilla is really fucking pissed off about World War II and it's time to fuck up Japan hardcore while the guardians of Japan try to stop him. Baragon also shows up but he doesn't even get his name in the title. Poor guy. Even more embarrassing is that his role was originally going to be played by Anguirus. Fuck you Toho ;_;

Linda Linda Linda: JKs make a punk band.

>that fucking guitar again

Why do Japs love all things Italian, it can't be because of WW2 because they weren't actually friends with them right. Is it just another high culture appreciating another high culture.

Apparently the guitar in Haruhi is a reference to the guitar in this movie. So says our local Haruhi expert.

>"We dragged him up to the rooftop and put a gun in his face. We gave him a choice: jump and you might live or stay and we’ll blow your face off. He jumped. He didn’t live.”

If they didn't want movies made about them, they should just stop doing shit like this. It's just too good to not be written about.

Stray Dog: Kurosawa crime drama, almost but not quite noir, set during a heatwave and starring Mifune and Shimura. How can you go wrong?

File: 26a4e68da2d2df6⋯.webm (14.51 MB, 318x240, 53:40, a_walk_through_postwar_ja….webm)

Just some more thoughts I had about the movie while I was making some webms. The stray dogs are the soldiers who fought in the war, the post-war generation or "apres-guerre". Both Murakami and Yusa were stray dogs. Murakami became a detective, while Yusa lived in his filthy shack. The only thing that stops Murakami from becoming like Yusa is his realization about what he was thinking and the way he was living, that led him to choose to become a detective. That's what saved him. Yusa's way of living made me think of a post about how important the idea of uncleanliness was in Shintoism. Yusa lives in that filthy shack. As Satou says, "Maggots prefer filth." And later he is identified by his muddy clothing. Yusa can't wash away his uncleanliness, perhaps because of the way he lives. When Murakami goes out on the street to look for a gun the tip he is given is to look desperate. So what does he do? He puts on his old dirty uniform from when he was in the army and heads out. So Murakami "cleaning up his act" as we might say, is what prevented him from becoming like Yusa. Live in filth and become filth. Satou's remark comes off as implying that Yusa is a maggot, i.e. a criminal, and thus prefers filth, but I think the opposite is really the case. He became a maggot from living in filth all the time, from the post-war situation. Unlike Murakami, who is able to escape this situation, Yusa is trapped.

Murakami's concern about finding his own gun feels at times self-centered, it's his first concern whenever someone is shot. He feels responsibility for losing the gun obviously, but he also clearly sympathizes with Yusa because they're two of a kind. So perhaps his obsession with finding his gun is also because he feels like Yusa is his counterpart, or an alternate version of himself. So it's like he really did shoot the gun, not just because it's his gun but also because he himself could have been Yusa if he hadn't made the right choice at the "dangerous crossroads" as he himself says.

File: 58d6a2d49b413e5⋯.webm (14.68 MB, 318x240, 53:40, satou's_home.webm)

The scene in Satou's home shows what someone in the Drunken Angel stream said about Kurosawa's love of purity. Specifically here with the peaceful home life and sleeping children. It's a strong contrast to the scene at Yusa's home. The cleanliness of Satou's life is clearly superior to that of Yusa's. It reminds of another movie by Kurosawa, also a crime drama, which involves the contrast between wealth and poverty called Heaven and Hell, though it is also called High and Low. There are a lot of parallels that I can see now that I've rewatched Stray Dog. So I think soon we will watch that movie soon too (not next week but soon). Anyway, that's all.

This scene left the most impact on me from this movie. Its something I dont see done often in modern movies. "undercover scenes" usually dont show the viewer as much as this movie does. They just explain that its harder than it is for you guys out here and move on.

The final confrontation scene between nakajima and yusa after they fall over in the woods panting mirrors the opening scene with the panting dog beautifully. The two main subjects of the movie are like that dog from the beginning.

Thanks for replaying the movie for me afterwards I really enjoyed it.

Thank you for streaming as always.

I stayed up too late last night. How was the movie by the Linda Linda director?

I think it captured the feeling of being a NEET in some ways. The subs are a bit lacking, and sometimes don't correspond at all to what is being said, but if you know a little bit of Japanese, you will understand. Really, it's the feeling of having to give up. I'll upload it in a minute even though I'm terribly intoxicated. His style is definitely slow. He likes to capture the sort of typical situation and likes to let the camera sit. There are not many fancy tricks like you might see in many modern movies. Once he places the camera it is almost always set permanently for that shot. The most important thing is atmosphere, not plot. Don't think, feel. Don't think, feel, and you'll be tanasinn.

Shin Gojira: Godzilla in a post-Fukushima age, as expected of the master Mr. Anno. Featuring the talents of Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi, and Shiro Sagisu.

>December 2012. After the production of EVANGELION: 3.0 YOU CAN (NOT) REDO, I was broken. A so-called depression set in. It was the comeuppance for six years that drained my soul. 2013 came and went. That was a year in which negative memories rumbled back, over and over. While I could represent myself, it became impossible for me to even physically go near the studio, even once, because of the burden of the next film [EVAGELION 4]. Early 2014. I was finally able to return to the studio. Then, I gradually got back into working, because of that year of self-rehabilitation.

>So, it’s 2015. After 20 years after the premiere of the old EVA; and you've been waiting more than two years since you last bought your tickets, so I’m working towards realizing the completion of the new EVANGELION theatrical features (why am I promoting it, already?). To those who follow me, and all the anime fans, it’s only through your continued support that gives me the motivation to move forward, again, towards the finale. Sincerely, I thank you.

>And, now, at the same time, I’m also starting work putting together a visual effects fantasy film. This all started at the end of January, 2013. A representative from Toho contacted me directly, saying, “We’d like to direct a new Godzilla film.” At the time, I was still recovering from EVA 3.0, and right on the spot, flatly refused the offer, “It’s impossible. Even to begin work on the next EVA is impossible.”

>Eventually, it was Toho’s sincerity and the enthusiasm of my ally, Director Shinji Higuchi, and I decided to take the job as Director that March. My prayer is that this will not be just a repeat of science fiction visuals of the past, and the wish we put into the Tokusatsu Museum Exhibit, was to embody the idea of giving back to the creators and artists who came before us, which was our intention and our responsibility. And when that epiphany occurred to me, my resolution was to undertake this task.

>Now, one does because they can, not because they cannot. I made my decision because this is a new, once-in-a-lifetime chance. This is not EVA. This is not an original creation of my own, and is something I’ve never done before — this is why I decided to do it.

>That May, I began my work with pen to paper. And I decided on how I was going to depict the principal subject. And in the following month, June, I submitted my G-Project Memos and Story Proposals to Toho, and then began working on the Plot Outline, etc.

>Godzilla exists in a world of science fiction, not only of dreams and hopes, but he's a caricature of reality, a satire, a mirror image. Recently, Japan has also been careless in the way it has attempted to depict him. In all honesty, Japanese production budgets and schedules are so tight, compared to the world’s capitol [Hollywood], not to mention the constraints imposed on filmmakers in terms of content. Frankly, I’m not sure how far outside the lines we can go.

>However, movies have pride, even trifling little films; therefore, just as in the case of the new EVAs, I’m going in full force. When I think about what I’ve accomplished, the twists and turns befitting a screenplay, everything has led to this point. I write this with the hope that the reader might understand at least to some degree that no matter what a creator says, it’s just an excuse, but I’m under pressure to make a visual effects fantasy film representative of modern Japan, with the full awareness of our current situation, which will be subjected to intentions both good and bad.

>Finally, to all those of you who have given me support, to all the fans who’ve purchased tickets to my films, to everyone who has given me the will to continue with my works, I’m eternally grateful. Thank you.

>The thought of this resurrection has my chest pounding. Almost three decades have passed since I snuck into this film industry, and had no idea what would transpire before me, because I was so idealistic. The difference between my first, carefree world of amateur filmmaking, compared to the reality of the ups and downs of the industry, I feel as though I’ve been a hero running for 30 years. But, at last, the time has come!

>I’ve come to see those reckless heroes of my high school and college days hit mid-life. It all seems like a dream, but now I must come back to reality. There’s no more room for idle talk. “What you really want to do, what you really need to do, what you should never do, what you may not be able to do,” are the thoughts that’ve fought in my head, and held me back.

>It’s a veritable championship over one’s own mind. What now, then? Playtime is over. Nevertheless, with my best friend standing beside me, we will triumph over the pressure that would otherwise make me run far away. I was born in this country which gave life to this great divinity [Godzilla], which destined me to work in visual effects, up until this very moment. I give unending thanks to Fate for this opportunity; so next year, I’ll give you the greatest worst nightmare.

Higuchi worked on Eva with Anno but he also did the special effects for the Heisei Gamera reboot (which we'll get to eventually, they're pretty good kaiju films).

More from Anno:

>At a press conference on July 19 that announced the completion of the film, Anno confessed that he had initially turned down Toho’s offer.

>“For me, the appeal of Godzilla is summarized in the first film,” Anno explained. “I refused (the offer) since I didn’t have confidence that I could exceed the first film or come close to equaling it. But I thought that if I were to come close even a little, I would have to do the same thing (as the first film).”

>By that he did not mean a shot-by-shot remake, but an origin story in which humans see Godzilla for the first time.

>“The fascinating thing about films in which monsters appear is the interest of something different coming into view, of a foreign object in contemporary society,” he explained.

Stream will be up in four hours.

Stream now up. Mothra will be on in 20 minutes.

Please do. Shin Gojira was the film I had been waiting for since the beginning. I hadn't seen it before and decided to wait until the end to watch it with you guys ever since I asked if we could watch all the Gojira when you first started this up.

Godzilla now over. Thanks to everyone who showed up, it was another fun stream.

I'm sorry, anon. One day we'll watch it again, just like Seven Samurai.

Tomorrow's Films are:

Rodan (Sora no Daikajuu Radon): The very first color kaiju film produced by Toho, directed by Ishiro Honda, special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya, Rodan played by Haruo Nakajima. The works. What begins in a simple mining town expands over and over again in scope.

Branded to Kill (Koroshi no Rakuin): Seijun Suzuki's last film before he was blacklisted for 10 years because of his unorthodox style. The president said this at the time that Suzuki was fired:

>Suzuki makes incomprehensible films.

>Suzuki does not follow the company's orders.

>Suzuki's films are unprofitable and it costs 60 million yen to make one.

>Suzuki can no longer make films anywhere. He should quit.

>Suzuki should open a noodle shop or something instead.

Later he sued for wrongful dismissal and settled out of court because the company was on a downturn and it was doubtful that he could be paid the amount that would be owed to him. Nikkatsu then turned to making softcore porn movies and the president who fired Suzuki left over this. The film is famous for making no sense.

>Nikkatsu then turned to making softcore porn movies

Makes me wonder, are we gonna end up watching pink movies at some point?

I've never actually seen any so I don't know exactly what they're like, but I assume they're mostly just nudity and sex (though censored of course). I'll look into some of the more commonly recommended ones to see if they have any merit to them though 3D nudity doesn't seem too fitting for an /a/ stream. Of course there were all those Itami scenes. So maybe. If you have any you recommend, I'm all ears.

Rodan will be on in 15 minutes, I'm just getting stream ready now.

Minor changes from what I planned for tomorrow's double feature. I didn't realize we would be so close to Halloween so both movies will be horror movies.

Matango - Attack of the Mushroom People: A rare Ishiro Honda tokusatsu horror movie which was nearly banned in Japan when it originally premiered in 1963.

Ringu: 7 days, video tape, etc.

Stream will be up in five hours or so.

Stream is now up. Matango will be on in roughly ten minutes.

Mind posting the download link later? It looks interesting but I won't be able to catch much but the ending.

Matango now over. Ringu on in 10 minutes.

Sure, not a problem.

File: 8a286aa0d753e2c⋯.jpg (130.14 KB, 545x757, 545:757, the_youth_killer.jpg)

Tomorrow's movies will be:

Varan the Unbelievable aka Daikajuu Varan: A butterfly expedition in the mountains in the north of Japan goes terribly wrong.

The Youth Killer: Kazuhiko Hasegawa's first film. His second was The Man who Stole the Sun (the one about the science teacher who builds an atomic bomb in his apartment). Unfortunately, these were the only two movies that he made.

Ringu 2 will probably have to be next week because the torrent is downloading quite slowly.

Also, remember that Daylight Savings Time goes into effect tomorrow, so the stream time may be different depending on where you are.

Here's the torrent I used. Subtitles are a little poor at times, so you might want to check a subtitle database for better ones. Rutracker is a surprisingly good source for some rarer Japanese movies.

Stream will be up in five hours. Don't forget about Daylight Savings Time.

Stream now up. Varan the Unbelievable on in ten minutes.

Varan now over. The Youth Killer will be on in ten minutes.

The Youth Killer now over. Thanks to everyone who showed up. See you all next week.

Finally saw Tamako in Moratorium.

Was this a bad translation? I don't quite get it.

I like how she started doing all the chores it showed the Dad doing in the beginning, but she was doing them worse. It was a nice touch how she had to hang up his underwear, but she picked up only the tip as opposed to how Dad hung up her pantsu in the beginning.

Also, that after credits scene was cute.

After Linda Linda and this, I'm really liking this director. Is there anything else of his that's subbed?

I'd have to watch the scene again but it sounds fine to me. In colloquial English "Have not heard that one." is meant to mean something like "I've never heard someone say that before." The use of "one" is used to refer to the phrase which you haven't heard, and usually this phrase is referring to yourself so it's kind of like "I've never heard someone call me that before."

> Is there anything else of his that's subbed?

Other films of his I've found on rutracker: A Gentle Breeze in the Village, Kueki Ressha, and Ten Nights of Dreams. I plan on putting A Gentle Breeze in the Village on this Sunday.

Tomorrow's Movies will be:

Daikaiju Gamera: The first Gamera film. Gamera was Daiei's response to the success of the Godzilla films and quickly came to appeal more to children in more blatant ways than Godzilla ever did. You can see some of that in the first film but it's not until the fourth film that Gamera's role as "Friend of Children" becomes the driving force of the plot. We'll get there.

A Gentle Breeze in the Village (aka Tennen Kokekko): Nobuhiro Yamashita's adaptation of a shoujo SoL manga (it never got an anime) about a girl in a rural school with six students. She's the eldest in her class until a boy moves to the village from Tokyo. So basically, Non Non Biyori: The Shoujo: The Movie.

Stream will be up in five hours.

It's the last scene in the movie, where the girl and the boy are eating aisu together. He says he broke up with his girlfriend because "Suddenly invisible" and really didn't understand what happened there. That's the last line in the film. "Haven't heard that one before."

Stream is now up. Gamera will be on shortly.

I think it means that he felt "Suddenly invisible" and that's why he broke up with her. And she's never heard someone say something like that before.

Gamera now over. A Gentle Breeze in the Village on in ten minutes.

A Gentle Breeze in the Village now over. Thanks to everyone who showed up. See you all next week.

Could you post A Gentle Breeze? I didn't get to see it.

Tomorrow's Double Feature will be:

Gamera vs. Barugon: The best Gamera film simply because it has some great monster fights and a decent plot which is, most importantly, free of children. The Z Plan fails because an asteroid hits the rocket and some treasure hunters find a large gemstone on a tropical island.

Cruel Gun Story: A convict, played by none other than Joe Shishido, fresh out of prisonwith a handicapped sister, is coerced by a wealthy mob boss into organizing an armored racetrack car heist. This is a yakuza noir not directed by Seijun Suzuki so it's a bit more conventional than some of the films he made.

Stream will be up in around forty five minutes.

Gamera vs Gyaos: A volcano erupts and Gyaos, the vampiric beam-shooting Rodan knock-off, emerges. It's up to Gamera to save the day and a fat shrimp of a kid.

Nobi (Fires on the Plain): The tale of a Japanese soldier suffering from tuberculosis during the Leyte campaign at the end of World War II.

Stream will be up in about four hours.

More importantly, Tachibana Anna and two other Alice Juban/Kamen Joshi members play roles and the theme song is Zenkai Hero from Alice Juban/Kamen Joshi. Anna is leaving being an idol to be an actress.

I don't expect you to stream this and I don't think there's any english subtitles, but the first thread was discussion on /jp/ movies in general. Today will be a sudden Triple Feature because I have three movies that together have a runtime of three hours. So today there will not be a kaiju movie, it'll be more like having three full feature movies.

Intimidation: A one hour yakuza flick in which a bank manager is intimidated into robbing his own bank. (1 hour)

Koshiben Ganbare: Mikio Naruse's earliest extant film, this is a silent picture. Mikio Naruse is well known for many of the dramas he made about women in the 50s and 60s, so this one is a bit different for him. It's a mix of slapstick and melodrama about an insurance salesman and his son. (30 minutes)

Sword of the Beast: A fugitive samurai joins forces with a couple in the mountains against the shogun. (1.5 hours)

I haven't been able to find, even a torrent of it. Your best option might be importing the disc and then ripping it it seems. As for where I usually find my movies, rutracker and the pirate bay have a surprisingly large selection of Japanese movies from many of the more famous directors (Kurosawa, Naruse, Suzuki, etc.) and rutracker has many many modern movies as well. When those fail, I'll check passthepopcorn which I got into recently. And then I'll skim my library's disc collection.

Stream is now up. First movie, Intermission, will be on in ~25 minutes followed by an intermission and then Koshiben Ganbare. Then another intermission and we'll finish up with Sword of the Beast.

Stream now over. Thanks to everyone who showed up. Next week or the week after will be the Seven Samurai since I know several people missed it and it's a great movie no matter how many times you watch it. Also I will likely be doing a Christmas themed stream for the 23rd with Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and maybe the two great Christmas anime movies to round out the stream. That's the idea for right now anyway.

It is one of the greatest works of Japanese cinema and definitely one of Kurosawa's best movies. Total runtime is three hours and twenty seven minutes. Five of these minutes are the intermission which occurs at around the 1:45 mark.

Stream will be up in about five hours.

Tomorrow's Double Feature will be:

No Blood Relation: An actress returns to Tokyo after a successful stint in Hollywood to reclaim - with the help of her gangster brother - the daughter she abandoned years before. Another Mikio Naruse silent picture, this one more typical of his later sound movies in the fifties. Silent movies lasted quite a while in Japan, into the 30s even probably because of Japanese reluctance to adopt new technology as well as the popularity of the benshi, live storytellers who narrated the films for the audience.

Kueki Ressha: A Nobuhiro Yamashita (Linda Linda Linda, A Gentle Breeze in the Village, Tamako in Moratorium) film about two labor workers during the Showa period and a female bookstore clerk. One is a highschool-dropout and the other a college student

I'll slot in Infection for the stream after Christmas then. Kaidan and Premonition sound interesting as well.

Stream will be up in around half an hour. Movies will start in a little under an hour. Prepare the alcohol.

I have milk, is that the same thing?

It's even better.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence starting now.

Intermission now. Disappearance on in ten minutes.

Disappearance now over. Tokyo Godfathers will be on in ten minutes. And don't forget about the other Christmas stream right after >>890035

Thanks to everybody who showed up to the stream. See you in tonight's stream! Merry Christmas.

File: da3d801f0594190⋯.jpg (75.78 KB, 550x775, 22:31, infection.jpg)

File: 4be4d5202489b50⋯.jpg (285.05 KB, 500x694, 250:347, Crazy Thunder Road.jpg)

It's time for another double feature. Tomorrow's movies will be:

Infection (Kansen): A doctor in a run-down hospital makes a mistake which leads to unforeseen consequences for the staff. Part of the J-Horror Theater series.

Crazy Thunder Road: A biker gang leader loses his yankee spirit after he falls in love so disgruntled members of his gang set up their own gang. Directed by Sogo Ishii as his graduation project for university. Ishii made a bunch of punk movies in the early 80s (he himself was in a punk band before he started making movies in college).

Both movies are a little over an hour and a half so total run-time with intermission included will be three and a half hours. We'll be starting at the normal time again. Also, the third installment of the Godzilla animated trilogy will have a world-wide release early in January so once that's out we'll marathon all three of them like someone suggested a while ago in the chat. I also have the Mothra Heisei trilogy which we can marathon at some point as well.

Stream will be up in three hours.

Stream now up. Infection will start in fifteen minutes.

Movies now over. Thanks to everyone who showed up, it was fun. Crazy Thunder Road especially had a crazy ending. Well Infection did too but not in the same way. See you all next time.

Are we going to watch all the J-Horror Theater? Because I hope we do.

File: 7ce15c5bfd365af⋯.jpg (75.81 KB, 499x700, 499:700, MV5BZTRjNDQ0ZWItNTk5MC00Mm….jpg)

Tomorrow's double feature will be:

Premonition(Yogen): A man discovers newspapers that predict future deaths.

I Am Waiting: A former boxer, Joji, gets involved with a club hostess, Saeko, trying to escape the clutches of her gangster employer.

That's the plan. Especially since the description given for this movie >>887362 is so enticing.

It's such a shitty movie but I'm sure it will be more fun with company.

Stream will be up in an hour.

Stream now up. Premonition will start in 20 minutes.

Movies now over. Thanks to everyone who showed up.

File: e71650c87cee97d⋯.jpg (51.79 KB, 668x954, 334:477, juon.jpg)

File: 8f1918df2408fe1⋯.jpg (119.33 KB, 480x684, 40:57, shiki-jitsu.jpg)

Sunday's double feature will be:

Ju-on (2002): Continuing on with our trend of watching early 2000s Japanese horror movies, this is a movie which I've heard a bit about but never seen. Like many other of these movies it was remade later into an American movie, though I haven't seen the remake either. Cursed house.

Shiki-jitsu aka Ritual: Directed by the master Mr. Anno, this is his second live-action film after Love & Pop (which is about compensated dating). This one is about a filmmaker who meets a girl who treats everyday as if her birthday were the next day.

>Two of my favorite Japanese films

Fuck, I might not be able to make it, but I won't give up hope.

Stream now up. Ju-on will start in 13 minutes.

File: 8a473e2e82e6068⋯.jpg (108.6 KB, 1600x1200, 4:3, 1540103451800.jpg)

It's nice to see that these threads are still going OP.

I'd join you if I wasn't wageslaving until late.

Doing god's work anon!

I won't be making it after all. Hope you guys are having fun.

That's all for this week. Thanks to everyone who showed up. Anno's movie was certainly interesting, I'm interested to hear your opinion on it, >>897017 .

Also, next week will be the Godzilla triple feature of the new animated Godzilla movies. I hope to see you all there.

Are we not doing the J-horror theater anymore?

We are, next week will just be a brief break for the King of the Monsters.

Godzilla: Hoshi wo Kuu Mono

What time is it starting?

Usual time of 6:00 EST.

Stream is now up, just playing the combined 20 minute Godzilla theme medley right now. Movies will start in 20 minutes.

Praise mothra.

Mothra is love.

Mothra is life.

>He fucks Mothra, kills Minilla, blows up Mechagojira, and shits on Ghidorah.

I just realized something about the name Haruo. The actor who played Gojira in just about every Showa film was Haruo Nakajima. Haruo is literally Gojira.

I want to get drunk with Beat Takeshi.

File: 59580b6b1f47600⋯.jpg (18.19 KB, 200x285, 40:57, Kitanoz3rd.jpg)

Sunday's Double Feature will be:

One Missed Call: Yumi Nakamura is a young psychology student whose friend Yoko gets a strange voice message on her cell phone which is dated two days in the future and Yoko can hear herself screaming in it.

A Scene at the Sea (あの夏、いちばん静かな海) : A deaf garbage collector tries to learn how to surf. Directed by Kitano, though he doesn't appear in it, and with music by Joe Hisaishi.

He has a certain way in his movies, at times bloody, at times tender, at times funny, at times contemplative. I suppose that would make Hana-bi his most representative film.

Stream will be up in about an hour.

Stream now up, movies will be on in 25 minutes.

One Missed Over, A Scene at the Sea now starting.

A Scene at the Sea now over. Thanks to everyone who showed up, see you all next week. We'll be continuing with more horror movies until we finish J-Horror Theater well not like One Missed Call was really part of that but whatever. Next week's feature might be an Itami film or an Ozu film, not sure yet.

For those interested, I found the soundtrack for A Scene at the Sea. Here is a mega link.

Arigatou, anon.

File: 8da1035c8d49585⋯.jpg (17.44 KB, 266x374, 133:187, Reincarnationposter.jpg)

File: ba732b5580dbc4b⋯.jpg (156.28 KB, 500x702, 250:351, Late_Spring_Japanese_Poste….jpg)

Sunday's films will be:

Reincarnation: A Japanese actress begins having strange visions and experiences after landing a role in a horror film about a real-life murder spree that took place over forty years ago.

Late Spring: Considered to be one of Yasujiro Ozu's masterpieces along with Tokyo Story. Noriko is twenty-seven years old and still living with her widowed father. Everybody tries to talk her into marrying, but Noriko wants to stay at home caring for her father.

The next feature films will probably be, in no order: Otoko wa Tsurai yo, Kagemusha (one of many Kurosawa films we are yet to watch), Tokyo Drifter, Kikujiro, the Samurai trilogy (about Musashi Miyamoto), the six-part Yakuza Papers series, and Marutai no Onna. For the first slot we'll be finishing the J-horror movies (of which there are only three left, Retribution, Kaidan, and Kyofu) and then I have movies like Burst City, Electric Dragon 80000V, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, the new Gamera reboot trilogy (quite a bit better than the originals). Also probably Uzumaki, a live-action adaption of the Junji Ito manga. So we won't be running out of movies anytime soon. Especially if we actually want to watch the entire Otoko wa Tsurai yo series which has 48 movies. The first slot has kind of changed since we've seen the majority of the kaiju films (and probably most people don't want to watch every last kaiju film any way, there's some very bad ones) and we're now watching horror movies but I'll still reserve it for films that are lighter, or at least not heavy. As usual, if you have any suggestions just post them here. Oh yeah, and Swing Girls which is supposed to be similar to Linda Linda Linda, made around the same time too.

Stream will be up in a little more than two hours before the movies start.

All that sounds great anon, especially the 48 movie long series. It would be hilarious to spend an entire year watching one series. Do you know how long today's movies will run for?

Around three and a half hours.

Reincarnation is an hour and a half. Late Spring is an hour and 50 minutes.

Stream is up now, movies on in twenty minutes.

Late Spring now over. A very excellent film. Thanks to everyone who showed up, see you all next week.

File: af99f46999a5c3a⋯.jpg (27.53 KB, 266x373, 266:373, Suicide_Circle.jpg)

Requesting we watch Suicide Circle.

Yes, I want to watch it because it uses a song from an idol I like, but it also seems interesting.

Seconding this. I've heard good things, but I never looked into it myself.

>Suicide Circle is a 2001 Japanese independent Avant-Garde, Crime Drama, Arthouse, Mystery, Thriller, horror film written and directed by Sion Sono.

That's a lot of genres.

File: f45364d8b4de3ba⋯.jpg (16.82 KB, 265x374, 265:374, Retribution-Poster.jpg)

File: 54e76bd883be172⋯.jpg (168.51 KB, 253x375, 253:375, otoko wa tsurai yo.jpg)

Sunday's movies will be:

Retribution aka Sakebi: A detective investigates a series of serial murders that leads him to a mysterious woman in red.

Otoko wa Tsurai yo aka Tora-san - Our Lovable Tramp: The beginning of the longest running movies series ever. Tora-san is an itinerant peddler who returns to see his family again after many years away.

Added on to my queue. If not next week, then the week after.

It's a beautiful movie. We'll certainly be watching some of Ozu's other movies in the next few months so stay tuned.

This one's a must watch.

Stream will be up in three hours.

Stream now up. Movies on in 20 minutes.

Also, because I forgot to put down the run-time again:

Retribution is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Otoko wa Tsurai yo is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

So total runtime will be 3 and a half hours.

Thanks for showing up everyone. Both movies were good. Tora-san really is a lovable tramp.

File: 2d2ec49aa92089e⋯.jpg (29.13 KB, 265x376, 265:376, Kwaidan-poster.jpg)

So since my torrent for Kaidan has no seeders, we'll be watching Kaidan instead. The two movies are completely unrelated despite having the same name. The one we were planning on watching is from 2007, the one we will be watching is from 1964.

Kaidan aka Kwaidan: A series of four unrelated ghost stories adapted from a book collection of ghost stories written by Lafcadio Hearn, a Greek who became infatuated with Japan over a hundred years ago and then changed his name to Koizumi Yakumo. He is also the namesake of Maribel Hearn and Yukari Yakumo, both of whom you should know.

The whole movie is 3 hours so we'll be watching just this tomorrow, not even an intermission.

File: 8d47d65ff5dc048⋯.jpg (101.99 KB, 782x1000, 391:500, rape! 13th hour.jpg)

Well, Kaidan still hasn't finished processing and the loli stream seems to be having the same problem ( >>906931 ). But I do have one movie reserved for a special time like this as well as a few movies that we've watched which we could rewatch. The movies I still have uploaded are:

>Seven Samurai

>Crazy Thunder Road

>Cruel Gun Story

>Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

>Tokyo Godfathers

I exclude Late Spring and Otoko wa Tsurai yo because we watched those recently, but I do have them as well.

The one movie we haven't watched, which I've had sitting on my drive for a while as a backup, is:

Rape! 13th Hour: A serial rapist takes on a young protégé to his craft as he is pursued by a homosexual gang seeking vengeance for an attack on their leader.

We can discuss what, or if, we want to rewatch any of the movies I listed as the second movie. Stream will be up in about two and a half hours.

Stream is up, movies will start in 25 minutes.

Thanks to everybody who showed up. I got sidetracked watching youtube videos in the stream. See you all next week.

I keep meaning to join but I always end up forgetting. How many people still participate

We had 9 people on yesterday's stream. I would say the average is 7.

File: 5bf0c7fb67c3558⋯.jpg (190.13 KB, 1440x1080, 4:3, [AOmundson] Ai Yori Aoshi ….jpg)

Just a quick bump and reminder for the stream tomorrow. Nothing has changed from this post >>906821 except that the file is working now.

Stream is now up. Kaidan begins in 20 minutes.

Another great movie, very atmospheric storytelling in a distinctively Japanese way. Every story was great, I would definitely recommend it. Thanks to everyone who showed up, see you all next week.

Also, here's a link for the movie.

Unfortunately, I can't post the torrent link because I forgot that I got it from a private tracker. This version is hardsubbed, but if you want the softsubbed version I can upload and post that too.

File: 292465126fe7d0b⋯.jpg (42.33 KB, 472x469, 472:469, 292465126fe7d0b2d6ff126775….jpg)

It's all good man, actually this is the first time downloading from Google drive has worked for me. Thanks.

File: 93ff7c9319efa4b⋯.jpg (26.36 KB, 268x387, 268:387, Tokyo_Drifter_poster.jpg)

Sunday's Double Feature will be:

Kyofu aka The Sylvian Experiments: The last entry in the J-Horror theater series (we will have to skip Kaidan because I can't get a copy of it) about medical experiments. Hopefully Akai-sensei will make an appearance.

Tokyo Drifter: A Seijun Suzuki film about a former yakuza hitman who must evade assassination from his one time comrades. This is also one of Suzuki's films where he was able to show off his unique style, along with Fighting Elegy and of course Branded to Kill.

Stream will be up in about fifteen minutes. I'm too lazy to make a new thread right now so I'll do it before the next stream. Hopefully everyone at least knows to check the thread.

Thanks to everyone who showed up. Tokyo Drifter was great and stylish. Kyofu not so much. I would not recommend it, but I would recommend Tokyo Drifter.

File: 573980b9ff50aac⋯.jpg (108 KB, 1280x720, 16:9, 1410893228768.jpg)

New thread next movie night. Also, Please link the google link to the movies you watch since I sometimes can't make it and I then watch it with a friend at a later date. I truly, genuinely appreciate what you do movie anon. Yeah just wanted to express gratitude.
