 No.888907

I've fallen behind in maintaining the LN/WN/VN thread since I've been reading Shield Hero's WN Bakarina. Enjoying anything good lately, /a/?

I've gotta eventually finish Spice & Wolf as well as the Slayers light novel, but I'm in a light novel slump these last few days as I play that stupid NTR game Evenicle. I started it and now I have to finish it. What are you reading? Find any gems among the normalfag trash? As for Shield Hero, I have to say the early chapters remind me more of a live action rather than an anime, while the later chapters are nice. It truly is a masterpiece in its own right, even if it's generic isekai trash. It manages to avoid the power creep which is a rare exception for Isekai. How's your own web novels coming along, anon? Made any progress?

 No.888908

>>888907

That is, Shield Hero'd WN AND Bakarina. That was a terrible blunder on my part.

 No.888930

I've been reading through the ToraDora LNs this year instead of rewatching the show for the umpteenth time. That's put me behind on reading most my other novels. I just got the 13th volume of the Shield Hero LN in the mail the other day, but don't remember ever buying it. Gotta read that.

I'm planning to start translating the 5th volume of Youjo Senki after the new year starts, because trying to keep up a schedule during the holidays is pointless.

 No.894268

I'm thinking of picking up and binging Slayers here next. I'll give anons a heads up about the LNs, but I'm not gonna read the reboot probably.

Recently I've been reading I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level. It's something cute and relaxing for when I want to go to bed.

>>888907

>NTR game Evenicle

It really isn't for the most part as only one of the girls gets fucked by someone else other than MC. The entire rule system of the world is set up so you can't be NTR'd.

>Shield Hero manages to avoid the power creep

We must not have read the same LN then. Shield bro very quickly becomes the strongest of the heroes summoned and the enemies scale up with him.

 No.894325

Read through Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, and it's definitely top tier material. The MC is both interesting and entertaining, the romance between the MC and the love interest is both well done and doesn't feel superficial or rushed or "they got together because the author said so", the supporting cast are fairly well fleshed out, and the comedy got me laughing a few times. Pacing, setting, and story are all consistent. I'd recommend this one to anyone, even normalfags.

>>888907

>Evenicle

The MC doesn't cucked but other characters do, and there's plenty of rape. My suggestion is to just drop the game: the girls don't have any character growth, the sex scenes don't get better, the story doesn't get interesting, and the exploration/combat doesn't get fun. The high production values do a superb job of masking the thorough mediocrity of this game.

I feel bad for the people who read this and had to wait for 21 to come out. This volume had everything hit the fan and the story isn't even at its climax. Its like Europe is where Kamachi goes to write blood baths. I'm still shocked that Orsola became the main boss this time. Even if it was foreshadowed when the torch passed from Carissa to her it was still a surprise. Less surprising was Accelerator making a deal with the devil of misunderstanding to get good at magic. it was great reading all the best magic side girls present in the same scene.

Yea he does become the strongest hero pretty fast, but the power levels don't run away to absolute retardation due to the curse power resets and the separate level system in the other world.

I'm not the original anon you were talking with, so I cant speak for him, but thats my take on the series.

I personally wouldn't say there is no power creep, just that the series has inbuilt ways to keep it from getting retarded so that they can keep the fights interesting.

>It really isn't for the most part

>For the most part

The rule of vanilla states that one drop of chocolate in your vanilla ice cream makes it no longer vanilla. I present not one drop, but three dollops of fudge and a strawberry blended in. There's more examples both in the writing and in CG format I've run into so far/I haven't reached evidence four yet so there could be more, but most anons don't consider Cuckqueen content the same as NTR. This of course doesn't include the various other CGs of girls getting raped by monsters which I know includes one of your wife getting fucked by the queen of Humpty, which like all the other scenes I'm sure I'll be forced to watch. Shit, Rance games have less NTR than this fucking game that everyone insists is "vanilla."

>Shield bro very quickly becomes the strongest of the heroes summoned and the enemies scale up with him.

He actually bothers gathering up small shield bonuses instead of just using the strongest weapon he gets. When the other heroes do the same they quickly outclass him in the Web Novel. Basically see >>895298

Yeah I agree. I was saying that there is some amount of bullshittery that gets brought out, like the spirit tortise abilities and a host of the minor skill shields that allow him to deal with other problems.

The point I was trying to make is that he doesn't only get stronger, but gets knocked down in power level every once in a while so that he can keep fighting enemies who are in the same scale as people he has already defeated, all roughly as powerful as a hero in the upper half of the level spectrum

I see three NTR scenes and that you're probably trying to justify your disgusting fetish, and that's about it.

First scene is a virgin girl in a relationship and she's constantly calling out for her lover. At no point are you supposed to self-insert.

Second scene is a virgin girl in a relationship who also has a color-changing gem on her head that permanently reminds her lover that she was raped. Its specifically mentioned in the scene that guys are swapping out so unless you're pretending you're three different dudes, again you aren't supposed to self-insert.

Even if you were supposed to self-insert, wanting to self-insert like that is only one step below being an NTR fetishist but the idea of getting off to cuckolding someone else is extremely normalnigger behavior.

>but to claim that the whole game is NTR is nothing but some combination of retardation, projection, and insecurity.

One drop rule in hentai means that even one scene ruins the entire project. There's a reason games have tanked/Japanese otaku have damn near rioted when a game fails to include the NTR tag/why said games don't sell as well.

>unless you're pretending you're three different dudes

There is literally nothing wrong with getting together with your bros to gang rape some dumb whore. It's been the tradition of every army throughout all of human history.

Rin has fantastic thighs and buttocks, but everything else about her is unpleasant. She is just a rude, downright abusive person. She is physically, verbally, and mentally abusive. Just a mean girl.

It's been a long time coming. But I've finally decided to read Fate Stay Night. And for being a decade old VN I can totally see how it was regarded as a revolution of the genre at the time with its animations and all star voice cast. Sadly since it is incredibly hard to avoid being spoiled on the main twists of the story at this point in time I can only imagine what it would be like to read this blindly. Where you got a nice cast of characters and there is a possibility that each of them are mortal enemies while the game throws you plenty of red herrings and distractions.

It also occurred to me by reading this is just how bleak and depressing the whole story is when the whole conflict is just based on the arrogance of magic shitters.

What cover do the paperback english Spice and Wolf novels have? I've seen two versions with the original anime style cover and a 3DPD cover. I'm afraid if I buy them from amazon or barns and noble I'll end up getting the ugly covers. Rightstufanime is having a sale right now so I was wondering if that's my best bet to get the anime style covers.

>What cover do the paperback English Spice and Wolf novels have?

They have both. The 3DPD shit-tier cover is a sleeve-cover/dust-cover that can be taken off if I recall correctly. Any copy officially from Yen Press will have the 3DPD dust cover that mut be removed (a small number was released with the 2D dust cover due to fan backlash, but all "future" copies afterwards feature the 3DPD dust cover with the 2D proper cover underneath).

Finally just finished Mushoku Tensei (WN). Maybe I am alone on this, but I felt like the ending was very abrupt and disappointing. Even though it’s quite long in pure length, it felt rushed and shortened around the time that Oldeus appeared. A lot of dialogue that should have happened was glossed over and the main cast was put on the back burner. The end itself was unsatisfying and a disservice.

I'd agree on it being unsatisfying, but I think what happened was the author was getting burned out and knew it, but he wanted to make sure he finished the series/tried to wrap up loose ends. Not all loose ends need to be wrapped up though in a novel, as can be seen in Sevens with many plots not being brought up again or intentionally being ignored (as the author commented on in his Q&A sessions repeatedly, such as the "clear 100 dungeon floors to meet X" plot).

Dear /a/,

Would you happen to know why so many light novel translators seem to be fluent in neither English nor Japanese?

 No.909095

>>909092

It's easy.

LNs is the entry tier for translation, since the barrier for entry is so low. I don't mean that in a linguistic sense, since LNs are actually more likely to have more complex language than manga or anime, but in a technical sense. One guy can easily just open up Word and start typing bullshit, and it's easier to see a project like that through than something that involves more complex skills like cleaning, typesetting, timing etc. When you have to do all that in addition to the translation itself, it scares off a lot of the lazy people who are shit at the languages they're meant to translate to and from because of their laziness, or they might have to work with other people who might just not be willing to work with them at all if they realize that the translator doesn't know what the fuck he's doing.

Since this is also a visual novel thread, I'll leave this here. Minori, the makers of ef, Eden, Supipara, Natsuperu, etc., have announced they're ceasing software development yesterday. Sono hi no Kemono ni wa will be their final release. It doesn't seem like they're shutting down due to financial difficulties, but because they haven't been able to reach some form of harmony between what they want to make and what the audience wants, leading to loss of motivation and willpower which would eventually prevent them from maintaining their quality standards. Also feeling like they had betrayed their fanbase (probably because Supipara was never finished) and that it's a good opportunity to let their staff acquire experience somewhere else.

RIP. I really, really liked their releases and their production values were always superior to other developers. But nothing is permanent, at least they are leaving gracefully instead of cucking themselves.

 No.909587

>>909206

This. There's basically three types of translators for LNs:

1) People who translate (a rarity, but you'll know them when you see them).

2) People who use a machine but actually do know some Japanese (these people use the machine for speed of not looking up a million obscure kanji rather than because they need it)

3) People who don't know Japanese/THINK they know Japanese so they 100% machine TL something and "edit" it (these are the people who pick up a popular LN someone else was translating, and keep "translating" a work for shekels long after everyone has told them to fucking stop).

The TL market is saturated with number three because normalfag retards keep paying group 3s patreon fees or donation goals despite the shit-tier quality because there's enough suckers in the world to fall for it. This will likely happen to anime/manga more in the coming years as voice recognition software and OCR software continues to improve. You're witnessing what will become of all of our hobby if you don't learn Japanese, anon.

Not being able to understand the Japanese is a bit more understandable, especially when the author makes really old obscure references that probably not even his Japanese audience would probably get, but having a good grasp of English I'd say is much more important for translation. I agree with >>909206 and >>909587,

the translations are done mainly by weebs with machine translation and Japs with basic high school English.

The result is that it's rarely idiomatic. But it does make it useful for people who understand just a little bit of japanese, because you can normally follow exactly how different phrases and terms are used (because they are translated word-for-word).

I assume that a native English-speaker with fluent Japanese has more profitable uses for that talent than fan translations. Native Japanese with high-school English is very common.

Partnerships between native japanese and native english-speakers would probably produce better results, but when you're putting that level of organization into it you might as well make a formal offer to the publisher.

We will have until Sunday, May 5th at 1AM Alaskan Time to finish reading it. It's roughly 221 pages of reading, so that would be ~12 pages per day (221 pages should be easy enough to read). We'll hold an interim starting roughly Saturday April 27th to discuss chapters 1-9 (chapter 10 begins on page 114). We'll also decide if that's too long of a time frame for anons to join in or not. Ideally I think a reading average of "30 pages/day" is reasonable and doable for the average anon since the average person reads at a rate of 1 page every 2 minutes, but it's better to start small like this, where we're only asking for about 20-30 minutes of anon's time per day.

There is a phenomenon, for lack of a better word, that I read about in high school. When you watch a movie or TV show/book, you have 10 minutes/pages to catch the attention of the viewer/reader. If you fail to get their attention, they will turn away from the medium and or become very bored and have to slog through it.

For years now, I have been reading only books that I personally have chosen to read, and it would seem I have forgotten what it feels like to start a book, not be taken in by it, and yet keep reading. Its a feeling that I have not had since the last time I had a literature class.

I dont want to make it seem like I am dissatisfied or anything with the choice of story, being only a few dozen pages into the thing. Rather, I just wanted to mention the feeling I was having and the thoughts it evoked.

This premise is so wildly outside my strike zone, and I know very little about the book, so I guess I truly dont know what to expect for the first time in a long time. When you read a book that is the same genre of story that you typically read, you start to notice the similarities between the stories on a meta level. You know what to expect or how the genre as a whole would be expected to progress, and you can make judgments or predictions from there.

I have never read a story like this. I have never really been into any of the genres that are even remotely similar to this. It is entirely foreign to me.

I dont really know how I feel about that yet. Logic would dictate that this should be an exciting emotion and I would be invested more in it, but so far I feel tepid at best. Maybe it is because I dont know what to expect that my cynicism is coming out. I hope I will find my expectations exceeded.

Please keep me informed on this, anon. I want to pick light novels that will be enjoyable, but will get anons outside their comfort zones since I think part of both expanding horizons and training those higher senses like willpower as you're describing should be integral to a light novel club. Just as the DIC is about improving drawing, QADJT is about learning moon, and anime club is about exposing anons to old anime from back in the day in a group environment, I want the light novel club to improve anons' lives and perhaps expose them to things they would normally not find themselves reading. I was sort of going exactly for that response you had, but I want to ensure what we're reading is still fun. I want the goals of the light novel club to be fourfold.

>1) Expose anons to new novels and new genres they normally wouldn't read and do so in a group discussion environment so we're on the same page.

>2) Help anons build up willpower and similar mental processes to help them succeed in their day-to-day lives through a simple but conscious task (exactly what you're describing, though it might not seem obvious at a glance).

>3) Have something anons can discuss together once or twice a month on a "level" playing field.

>4) Get more anons to read light novels/Get anons to read more light novels.

Ideally I would like anons who participate to experience at least two out of four of those goals in a given "quarter," but we'll see how it all goes. Thank you for participating! Ganbatte!

The phenomenon you're describing is an integral part of story telling. Stories have an intrinsic need to captivate their audiences early on. For books that is usually the very first sentence. Songs have their openings. For manga, the art is eye catching. For movies, the intro draws the viewer into focus shame so few movies have good openings. Too many of them open up with meaningless visuals coupled with credits. Look at Casino Royale for an example of a good one.

So I am done with Chapter 6 now, and I cannot for the life of me understand why MC is listening to anything at all that the Observer is saying about any of his plans.

She is killing any and all motivation he has for any single act he works up the motivation to tackle. If I were in his position, I would have asked her to not speak to me about any of the situations I am going to be tackling. He would probably fail and stuff, but thats part of living.

Alright, nevermind, I just sat down and finished it all in one sitting now. Ill leave what I thought in spoilers, so its written while still fresh in my mind but so that you can come back and read it when you are done.

Overall: A bit morose but not a bad read in and of itself. I found it a bit corny at times, especially toward the end, but I cannot blame him for doing what he did.

On the MC: Guy has a real character arc, and more than once had me feeling bad with some lines that hit a little too close to home. Still kinda processing that. I think I like him overall by the end.

On the Childhood friend: I knew that the love interest was not going to be the friend by chapter 7 or 8, but I didn't really expect the bitch to be a super crazy grudge machine. I really dont get her character at all as far as the resolution goes. I was expecting her to have been soured on him and have moved on.

On the Observer: Chick sounds like a QT from the descriptions and right up my alley, so I cannot blame the dude for falling for her. I think that her backstory was a little bit too contrived, but that may just be my distaste for the sins of the father falling to the son type stuff she had going on. I'd have told those ghost thots to shove their debt up their ass and that I didn't owe them dick with the mother abandoning me at all. Face fate with a fist not a bent knee. Same problem I had with the game Recettear actually. I know it may not have gotten me a good ending to do such a thing, but I would not stand for it if I was in her position.

On the Ending: I must not be the romantic type because this shit enraged me. I think it was trying to be a happy ending but it was not for me, it was just infuriating. I would have just gone with a straight tragic end instead of some bull halfway happy halfway tragic end. The title kinda gave away what was going to happen though, so I saw it coming by the next to last chapter. I would personally have ended it with him living the last three days with all the friends that he made, tying up lose ends and living a life of happiness confident in knowing that he saved his woman's life. I cannot adequately express how pissed off t makes me to see all his hard work and determination to give her a better life just thrown out the window. If she was going to just buy out her life, and have money to spare she should have at least negotiated with him to make it so they both had an equal amount of time from that extra money. God. Women.

That's a manga, dude. There's The Return of the Former Hero which is probably similar, and The Middle-aged Man who just Returned from Another World Melts his Fathercon Daughters with his Paternal Skill that recently has a TL pick it back up after being in hell for a year and a half, but what you're looking for is a manga (or an untranslated LN if it is one).

Spoiler but she doesn't even stay dead, or wholly dead. Honestly the story has gone completely off the rails at the end of one of the novels the author admits that he doesn't plan out his stories and it really shows.

It's not as bad as heresy spider but it's literally a succession of random events it's not even about real people struggling in a fantasy world anymore (though for the beginning of one chapter it was).

 No.925754

>>925742

>if the conversion tables are right his life is literally worth less than minimum wage

There is no conversion needed, his actual value was something like 30 dollars total, right?

I don't think it is the worlds dumbest suicide, I think that it is people selling off their potential value in an effort to live their life while younger. Selling a long lifespan for quick gain.

I don't think that it is entirely reasonable, but I can kinda get it.

>Who gets the years he sells

Probably people who have the opposite problem, those with lots of money and little time. As far as the people with shit lives who sell it to avoid suffering, I have no idea who would buy that life. People who are poor and scared of death maybe?

>How is the business enriched in gaining them?

I see one of two things. Its either that they are making money off of the sale of life time, and running a business that way, or it is an entirely supernatural operation that uses the life for some purpose beyond human understanding.

 No.925772

Based on the image posted, it sounds more like fans wanted stuff like ef and Eden*, but minori felt they weren't capable of producing things like that. Though I'm a little suspicious about the whole thing since they bring up the "broken promise" that is Supipara like anyone gave a shit about it. Almost makes me wonder if it wasn't that minori wanted to do more like Supipara but were disheartened by the fact that their recent titty monster eroge have done a million times better than it did.

 No.925781

>Probably people who have the opposite problem

Which makes them priceless no matter what kind of shit life he has, unless you get infected by his luck (which he proves impossible by making things better with his time) buying extra time on the clock would be crazy sought after and expensive.

The only way to make sense of it is to accept it as supernatural dickery but it still doesn't make sense that a person would trade any of their lifespan for chump change you lose far less time from your life working for mcdonalds.

Using yen to USD conversion they offered him ~3k for 30 years, at $7.50 an hour it would take you 400 hours or ~17 days to earn that money, it's trading something priceless for something worthless. I couldn't get into the story because the premise just bothered me too much, it's like getting paid 3 grand to contract pancreatic cancer no retard would actually go for it. And I find the moral of the story deranged a short time spent well lived is not worth a miserable lifetime especially when that misery is self-inflicted. At least her killing herself so she can spend her last moments with him makes sense since she's been a "ghost" since she was 10.

I like the idea of man dates invisible gf then everyone can see her one day, everything else I found off-putting.

Sure, but it's pretty retarded.

>Novel starts out with the autonomous mech designed as a samson option reincarnating into fantasy world

>Immediately builds a FOB, begins studying the unknown stars for consistency to figure out what's going on, and subjugating/annihilating anything that comes within viewing distance of it

>Nukes a city on the off chance it has a Herald that will call down a god on him

>This summons one of the gods, which he blasts with a railgun after it tries to flex on him

Up until this point, it's a kind of guilty pleasure read. But any originality it has dies at this stage, because he 'levels up' and gets a new flesh body. This also removing his apocalyptic arsenal and he has to relearn it all with magitech, turning it into a dime a dozen trash isekai.

Oh, it also starts dumping in comic relief characters left and right, which always seems to happen when a author runs out of ideas.

Any recommendations for some light novels more suitable to public reading? Most of my current PTRs don't really fit the bill. Want to get in more miscellaneous reading when I can fit in the time, but don't want three page spreads of scantily clad 2D beauties (or gore and the like) popping out for peering eyes when I open the book. Kind of thinking shorter series, maybe 1-4 books, since I'll mostly be reading in 15-20 minute bursts over a longer period of time. Can read Japanese, so no worry about translation status. Would rather avoid isekai and sports-based for the most part. Thank you for any suggestions.

>I've been reading Shield Hero's WN.

Well that's your first and biggest mistake, to read a very mediocre novel written and illustrated by two sandwich makers and washing machines, which has nothing but elements of a shoujo on periods once you take out the isekai, and the MRA vibes.

Because the story is black and white as fuck in it, and characters can put stereotypes itself to shame, and whole false rape accusations and getting back at the "bitch" is just trying to suck our dicks, so like moths to flame, we run to it like morons, ofcourse she can get away with this with no issue, her V Card made her free of any backlash, she's getting best of both worlds, other than crying feminists on twitter who think it was done by a guy.
