The price of space feudalism is ugly CGI mechas.

First episode was okay, not horrendously bad but also nothing special. It's 1 cour though, so I doubt they can do anything satisfying with the setting in that time.

We still haven't had any of the other half of the cast even teased, wonder where this is going. At least there's a twintail loli.

>missed the part at the beginning where they drop the formal language and kept being formal in the subs

Is the same guy who did the UzaMaid subs behind this? The animation had a touch of QUALITY to it too and the exposition is pretty clumsy. The CG I thought was acceptable and the designs are pretty good in that silly anime sci-fi kind of way but so far they haven't hooked me. I give it 2 more episodes.

I would gladly die in a space war if my ruler was this moe and exposed her back and armpits so shamelessly though.

No, this is going to be the modern Kannazuki no Miko.

>Idol monarchy

Is this is land promised by /a/?

Its an anime original so I will give it more of a chance, but there was nothing in the first episode to keep my interest. I thought the CG mech fights were decent, but the overall animation quality was very low. Looked cheap to make, especially for a first episode. The writing was bad, the sound design was unimpressive.

I am curious to see if they keep a lighter tone or if it will shift gears into some edgy horrors of war stuff. Also curious to see the other girl from the ED, presumably from the Empire side of things. With it only being a 1 cour, there isn't much chance for a decent story, especially if it is split across 2 sides, but we will see what happens.

>Kingdoms specialty is developing cutting edge mecha of mass destruction

>Does not play by the rules and will break them to gain victory as shown in the VR battle

Make no mistake. This is the face of a monster.

The CGI mechs were average looking. What they did have was wonderful direction and choreography. Most sci-fi battles these days are just hunks of metal running into each other with no continuity between shots. Even the macro movements on the battlefield made sense which is rare to see anywhere, much less in anime.

Is my taste irrecoverably shit or was the CG in this first episode passable?

I like how they put all those tones and shaded textures on the 3D mecha, combined with a somehow decently implemented limited framerate it looked much better than the usual Ajin style approach of untextured 6-24 fps unity store asset trash in front of hand drawn BGs to make the CG look even worse than it already is.

Would it be possible to somewhat recreate classic 5-tone shading at a reasonable budget with CG?

>Is my taste irrecoverably shit or was the CG in this first episode passable?

My thoughts as well, I was going into this expecting it to be Overlord-tier CG but came out pleasantly surprised.

File: b675842d1481d39⋯.jpg (118.42 KB, 1280x720, 16:9, iroha_spoon.jpg)

First I wanted to write something in the OP about how the mechs are surprisingly nice. I couldn't find a single frame where they weren't at least passable. But then most of the thread would be people complaining about the CGI and how OP is a faggot, so I went the opposite direction and toned down the expectations. It worked so well that now I deliberately give you an oppurtinity to call me a faggot for this post.

File: 9c6a0638450fd5b⋯.jpg (60.47 KB, 1280x720, 16:9, drawthreads.jpg)

I hope they didn't spend 80% of their budget on the CG, the hand drawn animation wasn't exactly stellar.

Sure it was no Quality Code as the director seems to have known his shit in cutting down unneeded frames and whatnot, but still.

Now bully me for starting another "hand drawn vs CG animation" argument you faggot.

The entire third season of Overlord had me laughing. A lot.

If they give plot reasons for this like they are drugging the water then this show would be solid.

I'm interested, this could be very well a trainwreck in terms of animation quality and bad writing, or the hidden potential yuribait of the season. Gonna check it out again next week.

Very unexpected developments. I liked how intentionally anticlimactic they made it. Now next episode will probably be about the blue squad.

I was pretty misled by the description though,

>This is a story of two girls born on distant planets.

They're both on the same planet, just in two different factions. It was probably meant to say "on a distant planet". This way I thought it was going to either be interplanetary combat or more likely, some wormhole shenanigans.

Him surviving would not be likely What will be interesting is the aftermath. Judging from the OP there will be a whole team on the Empires side as well.

I also enjoy the tactics and combat too, it's not just about jamming robots against each other. For an anime original this might be a good ride.

Still, there's a bit too much space politics and that's a pill that takes way more presentation than this for me to swallow. I'm going to give it one more episode purely out of respect for the balls to pull that twist and loli princess' 10/10 screech at the end, but I still haven't found anything to latch onto on this ride.

Why did they handle the death so weirdly? Like the girl saves him after he blows up the explosives and they exchange some banter and he even says he is going to surpass his father's legacy, not something you expect to hear from someone dying. >Why did they handle the death so weirdly?

It was a bit of a bait and switch. But when given some thought wasn't so weird. After they lost the skirmish they had to survive a five day siege, as they point out in the episode. Joshua was also very young at 15/16 which really doesn't make help your chances of surviving grave injuries. From his condition you can deduce that shard jammed deep in his stomach caused a lot of internal damage and that he lost a lot of blood in the process due to how gray he looks.

The ship looking that beat up after the siege suggests it was not easy to return to the capital and they probably did not have enough medical supplies available.

If you ask me I would not say this development was out of the blue or some asspull.

I thought it was a pretty decent bait and switch. I was expecting him to die as soon as the episode opens with his backstory, but then when he talked about how he didn't quite manage to die I figured he was safe for now so it still managed to catch me off guard.

This show's got some good ideas, I like how the Order was keeping the war secret from the princess and are basically using her as a figurehead, and I respect the balls on the writers to kill off the male lead two episodes in, but so far the presentation's a bit bland. Everything looks overdesigned and the direction isn't anything special, even Joshua's death didn't have much punch outside of the initial shock because he was such a bland character. I'm still interested to see where it goes, and I hope it picks up now that they've introduced the second MC.

No, she's shit. If she was a superficially similar character type, a cold and calculating person, she'd be fine, but she's not that.

She had nothing, she joined the military, now military is everything to her and she just follows orders without questioning them and is willing to follow them to her death, because the only thing she has is the military. Not out of any higher principles or convictions, only because she has nothing else. This is being a weak person.

And then she is confronted, for the first time, with suffering both directly and indirectly caused by her, and immediately it gets to her. Just seeing some sad kids is enough to make her compromise on her big fat principles and accept whatshisname's decision to go save the kids. She didn't even think about what she was doing until now. She's stupid and emotional.

Then after all this, she does pull out the cold and calculating card when dealing with getting the kids on the truck. But even if you forgot about how stupid she is from the previous showcase, she does it again and fully expects an 8-year-old whose parents she may or may not have killed to be all friendly and nice with her, shortly after having threatened to also kill said 8-year-old.

She better, I'm expecting some high level loli keikakus to make up for having to suffer through this old hag's character arc of becoming a slightly less shitty person.

It's obvious that she's emotionally stunted from her childhood trauma, and that she lived a sheltered life inside the military, so she doesn't know how to deal with civilians, especially with children. She just assumed that they are exactly like her, especially that little girl. It's natural that she felt very sympathetic towards them and got along with her commander's plan to save them. Then it turned out that she's completely wrong about those orphans, but she also doesn't have any idea how to deal with that either.

I don't want to make predictions, but we can be rather sure that a good part of the show will be about a 12 years old princess teaching basic emotions to a soldier girl who is at least six years her senior. And this episode was good enough to show us that she's really less developed than a little girl.

I can't believe the MC is fucking dead.

Has anyone noticed that the quality of this show has actually improved the further we get in? It seems like they’re were saving their budget on stupid shit like Yuuki’s 12th birthday party. This episode was the best yet, I love going into shows with zero expectations and being surprised. I hope it stays like this. I wasn’t expecting Stella to be a ruthless killer either, a perfect lover for Yuuki-sama still praying for the yuri development

I really didn’t expect Stella to be a stone-cold pyscho, I thought she would be something along the lines of an onee-chan archetype, though while hardened by war to some degree, remains hopeful through a love of egao.

The truth is much more interesting

This show is better than I expected. Nothing great but its okay and I want to see more. Also, Soleil really needs to work on the security of their bases. It was laughable how easily the Empire guys got in.

Wow, this show hasn't turned out like I expected it to in the slightest.

I've been getting Gundam vibes, too. Hope it stays this way.

I saw someone else saying this elsewhere too. It wouldn’t be my favorite development but it would depend all on execution.

>Soleil really needs to work on the security of their bases

To be fair they did infiltrate a base that was largely abandoned since most of the food was taken away. They had lost a major battle and was consolidating most of their forces to the heart of the country. In other words, the outskirts of the nation was merely to be like bait.

I think they would share more resemblance than absolutely nothing if they wanted to go that way.

>largely abandoned

It still had the brand new char or whatever they are called, as well a supposedly important food production facility that made enough food to put the many times larger empire at a disadvantage.

It was also weird that they talked about how much more industrialized and developed the kingdom is when the average blue squad had access to tools for hacking security cameras, locks, spying gear, and the defense systems as well as the troops couldn't hold for shit even 10:1, nevermind 1:1. They could've at least put up a fight, instead of voluntarily lining up to be shot one after the other by a squad of 3-5 allegedly not very good soldiers.

I haven't watched all of the OP but seeing them together at the end holding hands and what Stella said this week about not having a family like Lana would make it all fit together perfectly. Stella lost her family and country, and Yuuki lost not-Kirito. They both go insane and on the warpath with some vague goal of revenge. Stella is probably unaware her royal parents are dead and is planning on killing on them and Yuuki. On the other hand Yuuki wants to kill the person who killed not-Kirito. Eventually they fight in the mecha and beat each other almost to death then realize they are siblings with similar wounds. Cue the hopeful yuri incest. I would watch the hell out of their battle and yuri incest

It's not exactly stellar writing. What you're supposed to take away from it is

>orphans sad because no food and also war

>red guys have food for more red guys

>blue guys go blow up food so no red guys get food

>big guy saves orphans because nice but orphans not like him because blew up food and also kill dad

It's a typical "war is bad" story but seemingly told for an audience of slightly older kids. I started rolling my eyes when the generic guards were getting instakilled left and right with barely any effort just for not having the sense to be main characters, but you have to remind yourself this isn't meant to be very deep. At least I hope not.

File: 8a195640713def3⋯.jpg (113.97 KB, 1280x720, 16:9, [HorribleSubs] Egao no Dai….jpg)

It was a hidden base that nobody knew about. The Empire only found out after interrogating soldiers and they did not have any brand new Chrars, the Kingdom only has three of them after all. Adding to that they said they only cleared out the storehouse yesterday and were probably already in the process of clearing it completely out.

And metals and spy tech does not feed a nation.

The Chrars are the power core, not the mech. They specifically talk about how the new Chrars are powering the entire facility.

>It still had the brand new char or whatever they are called, as well a supposedly important food production facility that made enough food to put the many times larger empire at a disadvantage.

That just implies one thing: The empire is on the brink of starving to death and is desperate. Regarding the low amount of soldiers at such a valuable base there was the local lord that ran away and took most of the forces with him and a battalion was on the way to the base the very next day to fortify it/take supplies. The empire splinter cells were lucky to hit it in this vulnerable moment not to mention the fact the soldiers got completely ambushed.

>not to mention the fact the soldiers got completely ambushed

The ambush really doesn't excuse that shitty fight they put up. Later in the fight, the red ones actually got the drop on the blue ones and the blues just effortlessly killed them while they were busy not pointing the gun towards the enemy, let alone firing. Same with the 2v2 mech fight, although there was at least a 10-second pretense of the red mechs having the upper hand.

Hell, if I remember right these were the elite troops of the kingdom, whatever they're called, so if anything they should've had the upper hand after the initial surprise phase, and yet they didn't even graze the blues. There was that one lone fuck who grabbed the blonde girl, but then he got beaten up by her. If this was a team of the empire's elite soldiers, much like in episode 2 it was a team of the kingdom's elite soldiers, it'd be another thing, but still the kingdom's elite lost a person to cannon fodder enemies, and these blue fucks just had a complete walk in the park. It's jarring that they go from this gritty

>war is awful, people die when they are killed, the enemy isn't retarded enough to waltz into your traps unprepared

to the cartoony

>team of random misfits beats the enemy force even in a head-on fight without breaking a sweat

>Hell, if I remember right these were the elite troops of the kingdom,

The order is just the Kingdoms military there are top soldiers and most likely a bunch of nepotism but it's not like everyone in it is some kind of supersoldier. And why do you think the burger squad is made up of incompetent people?

>why do you think the burger squad is made up of incompetent people?

Because they said so, when talking about how they got the ossan, who is actually supposed to be good.

>Because they said so

Are the reds actually just soldiers? From the dialogue I got the impression that they're all nobility, the idea being that Loli's kingdom has a few elite knights as its military while the Empire has random goons and conscripts. In fact, they say this in the second episode when talking about their weapons, and I assume this extends to their troops as well.

File: 75c07fd6bed01d5⋯.jpg (469.68 KB, 2893x4092, 263:372, ss_galizien_animu.jpg)

>if I remember right these were the elite troops of the kingdom, whatever they're called

They are members of a royal order, and that doesn't necessarily makes them elite, only reliable. The example might be too historical, but this is the best comparison I can make: The SS wasn't an elite force of Germany, but an arm of the nazi party, and the average member of the SS before the war was a bureaucrat (in a black uniform), or a political activist (also in a black uniform), or the security guard of a glorified prison (also in a black uniform, but this time with a death's head). So if you were to attack a secret base of the SS, you'd most likely face people who are very loyal to the party, but that doesn't make them any better than your average security guard. If the order is like the SS, then those weren't even proper soldiers to begin with. And there is the Waffen SS too, but that's an other can of worms. It actually wasn't an elite force either, more like Himmler's way of making himself more important. But I digress.

>Because they said so

Come on. He said that in an obviously joking manner. They are still capable soldiers and you can make an educated guess that the ossans planning was really good.

There was nothing about them to indicate that they are elite, or anything above average. I don't think they would've failed to mention it if they were the designated "misfits that nobody likes but always get shit done" squad. They did mention that ossan was good, and that ossan getting transferred to them might be an indirect demotion.

A trained full-time military is still better than random goons and constripts, maybe that's what they were going for.

Well, at the very least I maintain that they should've been able to match the burgers one on one. Especially if it's the royal army. I could see some bumfuck-nowhere-lord's private army being untrained and not ready for combat, but these were specifically the military.

>educated guess that the ossans planning was really good.

Ossan fucked right off before they went into the plant. Then they just walked straight in and killed everyone they encountered. They were not doing any advanced tactics, messing with the building's security systems, creating false alarms, nothing. They just walked in and nigged the Char. There were several scenes when the reds got in a straight fire/melee fight with them, sometimes the reds even having the element of surprise, and the reds just all lost.

>the reds just all lost

That just means the squad is competent?

The totenkopf was always a part of the SS uniform, not just the labor camp guard. You fail to mention the Junker Schools which cranked out some rather competent officers and NCO's. A part of the elite image came from the outright fanaticism they had even right up to the end of it all.

I was talking about the introduction, not the action itself.

I also didn't mention the SS-Verfügungstruppe, or how the Ordnungspolizei was also under Himmler, so it was semi-officially merged with the SS. Moreover, they had a hand in the secret services too. The organization of the SS could be the subject of a whole series of books, so don't expect me to write an essay when the point I want to make is that a political organization of loyal people doesn't necessarily equal a force of supersoldiers. Also, the branch of the SS running the camps was called SS-Totenkopfverbände, and the death's head was their collar insignia, so it was more closely associated with them in the eyes of the average onlooker.

>it's Sora no Woto all over again

Not a very good analogy, since the order is based on chivalric orders and not a political organization. Probably a better example, since what we've seen of the kingdom is that it's basically feudalism after an industrial revolution, is that the order (or orders) is made up of aristocrats playing soldier, and possibly also retainers as maintainers and such. The aristocrats have been combat-trained so they're not (or shouldn't be) just random nobodies that can be easily mowed down, but their position in the order is likely based on social status rather than merit, so they're probably not distributed in the most effective way.

There hasn't been a single instance of clever writing, either, so even if they did try to bring it around in the second half, the chance of it not sucking is very low.

Wouldn't it be more; "When they try to run everything by her it goes to shit and they're allowing this because??" Other wise, I get what you're saying. So far its been nothing. I hate to say it but the best episode by far was about the blues. Everything else seems like a prologue.

I thought she got crushed? But then again its just implying she did.

It woudln't be a bad idea. However, they're using their hover mode on the damn things and that has to make a bunch of noise. Also nothing came from the mis-fire and injury of Lily. Like if an explosion from some area you're not expecting to have explosions, let alone two, suddenly has them you'd probably send someone to go look. Another thing that drove me nuts is why would they keep the bridge to the back up? Wouldn't it be a better idea to blow it, then push on the army so that they have no where to presumably run to? If food is as scarce as they imply, it shouldn't take long to starve them out. Plus you don't have to worry about air support since the atmosphere is too strong.

If we're pointing out everything wrong with the empire's super secret plan to encircle their enemy, we can also put down the explosion that took out the sentry post, and then the removal of the sentry post itself because if they weren't completely incompetent they'd be pinging the sentry post regularly and know that something was up when they weren't getting a response from near the bridge.

>If food is as scarce as they imply, it shouldn't take long to starve them out.

I suspect it is the Empire that is on borrowed time. From the fact that they can't spare any medics in their squads, the suicide tactics and zerg rushing they constantly employ. We've yet to see how things are in the empire but considering they do not have luxurious Chrars nor any hyper lettuce farms one can only imagine the Empire as some barren land and this is why can't lay lengthy sieges. They want to finish this quickly.

>if they weren't completely incompetent they'd be pinging the sentry post regularly and know that something was up when they weren't getting a response from near the bridge.

I suspect something like this happened since when they entered the forest they had a sniper ambush waiting for them. The order wasn't taken by surprise and even had a special soldier in there. And this was just a skirmish in the forest behind the main encampment so it is not like the battle is over.

>I thought she got crushed? But then again its just implying she did.

In Layla's brain concussed state she naturally would assume the worst without conclusive evidence. If we assume that Stella is that kid then it makes me wonder how she was picked up by the Empire. Wouldn't that imply that empire forces were there and snatched her up or something? Something to think about.

Maybe they were trying to grab the princess and someone made a mistake.

>sniper ambush waiting for them

I figured that was their rear guard, but it does make more sense that they were dispatched to intercept the infiltrators.

>it is not like the battle is over.

Right, it just began. Since they already know they're getting attacked, they shouldn't be taken by surprise. They should also know that they are getting spitroasted, but that the the rear force is small since the ambush team could report back what they found. So it looks like this should be a kingdom victory. Next episode will we see the tide turn and the war bog down to a stalemate, and then the power of egao starts saving the day?

I highly doubt that as after the incident she was taken in by a foster family in the Empire that didn't really care for her and made her feel that she had to run away and that is what made her join the army so she could feel that she belonged somewhere. Or something like that.

Wouldn't surprise me if it is just as simple as her assuming that her family died just like layla did and agreed to being picked up by some Empire rescue squad.

I think she just means that she is surprised at the Captain liking kids.

>They will then reveal it like its some grand keikaku but it will just look really stupid.

The only question is if the reveal will be that he is just of many Joshua clones, or that he pretended(ordered to) to die in front of the princess as some sort of 4D chess to make her realize how serious war is. Both are stupid, but the second one is so stupid, I wouldn't be surprised they went with this one, instead of just clones.

Makes me think that Stella doesn't know she came from the kingdom. A bonk on the head could explain it.

The big explosion happened while Layla was being driven away in the ambulance. That doesn't leave much time for imperial infiltrators to dig a random civilian kid out of the rubble.

No, just no, this is why the princess is such a coward, she was taught that the blues are """""humans""""" as well, when they are no more than pigs in human clothing. The Egao can be secured only with the genocide of such creatures.

Maybe they want to teach otaku that they should invest their hopes and dreams into old men, not little girls.

She's ignored anyways.

>"I want to surrender"

Now there's going to be some protracted fight at the refugee camp and she's going to make some big speech and make Red surrender. Then its going to turn to /u/.

But, anon, old men already rule the world!

If they already went this far, it's going to be about turning the princess around and making her realize that even if she's ready to fuck herself over, the people in her country aren't going to let her, and she better fucking genocide the burgers if she wants the war to end. Except without the genociding of burgers, because this is a lame-ass anime and we're not allowed to have payoff, it'll probably end on some gay compromise.

Then some admiral or someone will call everyone a bunch of useless retards because they can't even grow lettuce without some rare crystals that nobody else uses, yet starvation is completely unknown on civilized planets. We have this single shot in the OP, and I guess this is the colony ship they used to came to the planet. Unfortunately, it's more likely that they will somehow go up there (with a mecha powered by friendship) and discover how to build a basic steam turbine that can power a lettuce farm without magic crystals.

It was a nice combat scene, additionally I like how the stella team was portrayed as the expendable grunts that they are.

Its pretty clear they are focusing their resources on the combat scenes. See >>905076

What bugs me about that is how they're supposedly just some random Imperial soldiers, but they cleaned out an Order base and stole secret technology all by themselves. The Order looks laughably incompetent so far, even though they supposedly balance their low quantity with high quality. A few scenes of the Kingdom winning a battle but being forced to retreat in the face of constant reinforcements would have helped immensely; instead they only show a stalemate (collapsing a tunnel, keeping enemies at bay with artillery) then inevitable retreat, implying their troops are at the same level as the Imperials even with their super-crystal advantage.

>What bugs me about that is how they're supposedly just some random Imperial soldiers, but they cleaned out an Order base and stole secret technology all by themselves.

Stellas squad aren't just random soldiers though. Stella and Lily are petty officers and it seems the others are officers of some kind. Which means they are distinguished from most soldiers. They are also part of the same squad and Stella and Lily has been in the army for 12 whole years since the nuke incident. Which would adequately explain their flexibility when their simple recon mission turned into a sabotage mission.

So they are very competent but they don't seem to be given any real privilege since they get sent on suicide missions all the time. Which to me just illustrates how desperate the Empire is to win the war. They can't even spare medics for their squads too.

>even though they supposedly balance their low quantity with high quality. A few scenes of the Kingdom winning a battle but being forced to retreat in the face of constant reinforcements would have helped immensely

That is exactly what happened in this latest battle though. Even though the Kingdom had superior tactics, two minefields and stronger robots they just couldn't contain the constant zerg rushing of the empire. They even mention that the empire had like 50000 against their two platoons. Even at the first battle they showed that even though the Kingdom lays down suppressive fire and uses sound tactics the Empire just charges through everything and swarms them. Or just take Harolds fight in the recent episode where he takes down several mechs by himself only to get bumrushed in the end.

The most recent battle does go that way, but at that point it's been made painfully clear that the Kingdom has lost most of its troops already. It would have made sense for the earlier battles to be less one-sided due to familiarity with the land and such, but instead the Kingdom is fighting desperately for a stalemate even at the start of the war. For example, in Episode 2 they could have decisively forced the enemy to retreat, only for everything to end up the same way anyway (one week later, Joshua is dead and the Kingdom barely managed to retreat). Instead, the cream of the Kingdom crop at their best was only barely good enough to collapse a tunnel.

Maybe the Kingdom isn't as good as they think they are, and this is the wake-up call to reality?

What if the Empire's soldiers are just plainly better than the Kingdoms? Now, I'm just playing devils advocate here, but we have no real comparison between the two sides in terms of quality. Maybe the Kingdoms Order is better than the rest of the Kingdom, but compared to other states; they're not that great? We all know the Empire is going to win because the writers say so, regardless of any reason simply out of PLOT

>Stella Shining

>Shining Star

>What if the Empire's soldiers are just plainly better than the Kingdoms?

In almost all fights the Kingdom was defeating more enemies than what they lost, even without the new power cores, the reason they lost all the fights was that the enemy simply had a lot more manpower.

>We all know the Empire is going to win because the writers say so, regardless of any reason

That's the thing though, the show is halfway over, there's no way whatsoever they could dig themselves out of the hole they are in in any reasonable way. The raising of stakes went ridiculously overboard, constantly making the Kingdom lose every single battle, taking massive losses, and now they have such a tiny force, they might as well become guerrillas. The faggot burger squad might switch sides at some point, but even that means fuck-all.

I'm starting to fear they're going to go for an even bigger blunder than an asspull reversal victory, some kind of "coexist happily after a loss".

File: 8b88b5dede468a3⋯.jpg (301.38 KB, 1280x720, 16:9, 8b88b5dede468a3fd956ce1ccf….jpg)

I'm not sure if I should even try to rationalize some of the things that seem wrong about this show as being part of some subtle world building or if it's just bad writing.

It's definitely bad writing. This is not even remotely well written. It's not the shittiest thing out there, but it's very much in the below average zone.

It could be that the Kingdom never expected the Empire to mobilize their entire army against them because they've been constantly crushing rebellions. In that case, the one-sided war would make sense, but we'd need to see consequences: maybe a successful rebellion back home forces the Imperial Army to retreat, giving the Kingdom a chance to rally.

> is ugly CGI mechas.

would you say better or worse than Zombieland Saga dance segments? Because from my standpoint ZL Saga had some of the worst CGI I've seen in the last year, why they didn't animate it I'll never know. Surely this can't be worse.

Better than those scenes. There has yet to be any jarring mixing, unlike Kotobuki. The animations are also smoother. If this is the only fear you have of watching this, then you have nothing to worry about.

Something that I just started wandering, why aren't they leaving this planet if the only way to grow basc crops is to use magic crystals? What's so valuable about this planet, we never saw them trade with the rest of the human empire(?). Are they the only humans left in the galaxy? Is the atmosphere so thick that they can only land, but never leave? Even if when the first colonists came it was easy to grow crops and only recently dd it turn to sht why didn't they contact other humans? In fact where are the spaceships, why can't they fly on this planet? Just WHY?

>Why anything

Probably >>905422

Look, war is bad, okay?

They mentioned this when they were testing out the new chrars the first time. There's some sort of altitude limit where the chrars stop working. Presumably they don't have any other energy sources that would be powerful enough to leave the planet. Furthermore, they don't seem to show much interest in space at all so I doubt any expedition to leave would even be able to find a new planet to land on.

>For example, in Episode 2 they could have decisively forced the enemy to retreat, only for everything to end up the same way anyway

There is now way they could've won. The border guard had been fighting for ten days at the border, reducing their forces to 30% of their usual numbers. They only had three rushed out new generation Chrars, and the Empire had more numbers/used new tactics of launching mechs from launch ramps to destroy their ambush formation. These plus the obvious food problem in the Kingdom is what made the Margrave betray them. There is nothing to say that the Empires soldiers are worse than the Kingdoms. The only real difference that one side doesn't larp as chivalrous knights. And lets not forget they do not have new Chrars for the whole army so their mechs are most likely at an even level.

If numbers had been even then it surely would have been different but war is won with numbers, not skill.

>There's some sort of altitude limit where the chrars stop working

Yeah ok, but the chars aren't really aerodynamic, in the real world we have planes and rockets to take us to the moon, but we still don't have jetpacks that can lift a man, let alone a tank/char for more than a few feet in the air. It's not the same thing, since the chars use jetpacks instead of propellers or jet engines like with planes.

>Presumably they don't have any other energy sources that would be powerful enough to leave the planet

Do space ships also work on the same magic crystals as the chars, or do they use some other form of bullshit to achieve space travel?

>Furthermore, they don't seem to show much interest in space at all

But why? From what I gather they are colonists from Terra, not born on that planet, so why aren't they interested in space travel?

>If numbers had been even then it surely would have been different but war is won with numbers, not skill.

Tactics also play a key role, there are plenty of battle where a small force defeated a bigger army, by using traps/better terrain. There's also this, but it was just a simulation.

That is what happens when Yuki is the commander. But she is too busy drinking Empire semen to do anything.

> there are plenty of battle where a small force defeated a bigger army

As far as the Chinese are concerned, it's because they are very averse to physical exercise. They don't play sports for entertainment. They don't have races. Many many times throughout history their military with vastly superior numbers have either retreated or tried to avoid altogether any sort of conflict. They cannot stand physicality. I didn't know this until a few days ago when I read excerpts from a book of a United States consul's memoirs from back in the 1940s. Along with disliking physical exertion, they don't have creativity or ingenuity, which is really bad when you're dealing with military tactics and strategy.

A bit offtopic but I wanted to give context to that Chinese battles image.

This is turning to Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events level of comedy. She wants to end the war but they keep dragging it on and her actions keep getting misconstrued in the Empire's favor. Not like her plan would have worked anyway given how that commander just shat over her 12 years of life. He would have had to known that she was there as a baby when the tragic war started 12 years ago and he still was a dick to her. If this doesn't end with her country destroyed and her being a slave to the empire, I don't think I can take how they'll make both sides happy and resolve the conflict if that is what they're going for.

The Empire hasn't had its own share of bullshit bite it in the ass yet, that'll probably be what prevents the otherwise inevitable conclusion.

I see the Kingdom's cunning plot to poison the Empire to death is going just as planned.

The important thing is to give the Imperials some more character so people might give a shit when they die. Characterization means the Kingdom will finally start killing these guys.

It definitely is, and it means the Empire has some decent caffeinated chocolate.

lke how the Kingdom, even though it barely has any territory left, and lots of mouths to feed, can still have a rich and diverse dinner, while the Burgers, have to settle for potatoes, it's almost like those burgers can't into farming and agriculture, and all they are good for is killing and pillaging, kinda like some place IRL.

>Evidence that these new engines are actually bad

>Both sides know

>"Fuck that, war now!"

>Terrorists were now in the right in trying to stop the making of new engines

>They were from some other place too

>Emperor wants these new engines used now

I'm calling it; the Emperor is the former leader of the other empire and usurped Blue and is now trying to fuck Red. Meanwhile, Red and Blue will get together and uncover this in one or many stupid ways. In the end Blue will be dindu nuffin along with Red.

>haha well we didn't have food anyway so culling the population wasn't so bad

It's too sensible and not shit enough an ending, it's not gonna happen.

The Emperor knows about the research but that's all it is. Conjecture. Meanwhile Kingdom uses the Chrars to produce a ton of food for a good while now. Who cares about what some nerds of a dead kingdom thinks?

Did you even watch the first episode? She has always been a tactical genius but she was just naive until now.

>until now

Also, that doesn't change anything about how retarded it was to leave such a thing offscreen.

There was also the other times she commanded. It's obvious as fuck and doesn't need to be shown.

They specifically talked about how she got better at commanding and how she studied to improve, clearly a change took place, which is what they should've shown instead of yet another defeat. I'm pretty sure they've only shown battles that ended in a defeat or heavy losses for the Kingdom, excluding the one simulator battle that Hime won and the burger transport getting blown up, but knowing this show, the debris of the transport explosion probably hit the Kingdom's mechs and killed all of them, leaving 50+ teary-eyed orphans behind.

If anything, exactly because they hinted so heavily at Hime being a good tactician that they should've been showing the actual fucking tactics where Hime excels in battle, but instead all of that gets handwaved away and the only things we can see are the hysteria, smug burgers, and coming up next, some stupid shit about Chrars killing the planet.

>If anything, exactly because they hinted so heavily at Hime being a good tactician that they should've been showing the actual fucking tactics where Hime excels in battle

In all of the battles she has won she has always uses the environment to her advantage. It's not any stretch of the imagination that is how she kept the southern state from falling. She also employs a benevolent version of scorched earth tactics by running away with all the supplies before the Empire comes to pillage a place. Like we've seen in the previous episode the Empire just lives off of scraps and moldy potatoes.

It is a 12 episode show. What the heck are you expecting? 3 episodes where Hime just gradually and slowly levels up? Can't you just accept that two months of constant fighting and studying has taken place?

>What the heck are you expecting? 3 episodes where Hime just gradually and slowly levels up?

Why not? Doesn't that sound better than this endless whining about how people die in a war, and Hime continuing to genocide her own people through refusing to genocide the burgers?

Shitty and mediocre anime usually follow a formula, for example in Kakegurui it's very clearly laid out:

>things starts happening

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

>episode 1 ends

>episode 2

>things are going really badly

>ooo, what a surprise, the protagonist turns things around with [strength/brains/power of friendship]!

In this show, it's

>things starts happening

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

>burgers are fucking amazing!

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

>burgers are not so amazing! But still win!

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

>oh no, the protagonist is in a huge pinch! How could they possibly recover from this?

The point isn't that I care so much about Hime getting better at fucking the burgers over, it's that I want to see the burgers getting fucked over by Hime's allegedly good command, because the alternative is more fucking tension and drama with no payoff, in other words, shit.

I think the director took a bet to see how many times he could end an episode with Yuki crying.

It would be like watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes(since it also had characters from both side, and did the whole both sides have good and bad guys), and only seeing the battle where Yang Wen-li lost, and the ones where he one happened off-screen, yet still have all the characters from the show admiring him as a great tactician and calling him the Magician, even though we only saw him loosing. Also have all the battles he lost happen because he is actually a pacifist, and doesn't to kill people, yet still commands an entire fleet.

>It is a 12 episode show. What the heck are you expecting? 3 episodes where Hime just gradually and slowly levels up? Can't you just accept that two months of constant fighting and studying has taken place?

They could have had that, if they ditched the burger episodes, but no, they think they are brilliant writers, if they have characters from both sides, so that blue isn't just a cookie cutter evil empire.

She was always competent (see first episode). It's just that everyone around her consistently keeps her in the dark about everything and then just pick and choose which orders they follow and which they disregard.

>She was always competent

Repeatedly killing her own soldiers with high risk, low reward missions doesn't seem like command excellence. She also decided to surrender to the burgers, only reason she's still alive is that her subordinates disobeyed her.

>only reason she's still alive

Maybe I'm forgetting that they said they were going to kill her, but generally you don't murder the idol princess immediately after invading if you have any intention of maintaining public order. The guys most likely to turn into terrorists and guerrillas are the ones that spend every day fapping to her. I guess they could just genocide the entire nation, but I doubt they would go that far after a peaceful surrender/disarmement. Installing her as part of a puppet government or forcing her into an actual idol career to quell the populous are much more likely scenarios.

I have come to the conclusion that smiles are very expensive

I hate this show.

That scene was so weird. Even the most bleeding heart liberal would start to hate the enemy after they take their Starbucks and their favorite bloggers get killed in bombings in a war that drags on. There's no indication that the Kingdom was all that crazy pacifistic to begin with, going by the council and most people around the princess.

This is show is honestly the most masochistic shit I've recently seen. It's just one side getting buttfucked 24/7. And we might get the nuke we expected. but it will be some sort of EMP that disables mechs which won't solve anything as empire niggers will just grab sticks and stones and kill them that way.

I think its more that pursuing demoralized fleeing forces to execute them like dogs is against the Chivalry code that Soleil based its army on. Or less likely but probable they got persuaded by Yukis policy of no unnecessary killing.

It could be one of them! next Its a damn shame that Harold died because he was the only one who had any sort of idea how shit really worked.

You called it.

Tell us, Satan, when will we arrive in Hell?

I found it hilarious that the princess thought that no technology = humans being really nice. Creating a shortage of indispensable resources is the quickest way to start a conflict.

>chrar emp

Hime's gonna bomb the whole planet back to the stone age without killing anyone. Other than all those that will die without power from fossil fuels, I mean chrars. Bad thing is she's gonna do it to her own people too. If there are any of them left alive by that point. I've come around to Hime's way of thinking and will give up, on this show.

This episode made me accept that nothing nice will ever happen. I already knew it, but now I've accepted it.

My only remaining wish for this show is a doujin where Yuki gets gangraped by a bunch of faceless empireniggers after surrendering, at least that would give me some catharsis.

>tfw all the blackpill spam on here was a stealth marketing campaign for this anime

>tfw the blackpill spammer was trying to steal our smiles in order to make up for the losses in the Egao timeline

Watched the first ep, it was bland and didn't grab me, which by all accounts was a widespread, common sentiment (checked around, plenty of normalfag comments on various sites said the same thing, when fags like those are usualy 24/7 hype for everything). Wanted to give it a chance, watched the second ep, the tonal shift didn't work due to breakneck speed, the death felt too sloppily/quickly handled. Skipped through bits and pieces of the third ep, stopped, scrolled through this thread.

A number of anons seemed to think this show had solid potential maybe 4 or 5 eps in, but this never really caught my interest, and going through these posts, this whole show was basically misery porn with no real resolution (yet, I suppose, but the point is nothing good ever happens). Plots points feel scattered and poorly developed or presented, and everything just looks and feels color by numbers even though they're apparently trying to put a tiny bit of effort in to stand out by being so sadistic. Probably wasn't worth the budget to animate and create the show, I'd say.

In the beginning, going by what was shown, it should've become something like LoGH but with a cute loli playing Yang. 3-4 episodes is what you'd reasonably give it to get started on the loli tactician action. After that point, there wasn't any reasonable chance of salvaging the anime, but there was still some sense of

>well yet another important character died, so maybe next episode she will stop being such a useless pacifist retard

in fact, they're keeping up that pretense to this day.

>Probably wasn't worth the budget to animate and create the show, I'd say.

It was not, it's really bad, easily the worst thing I'm watching this season.

Good job show on missing out on the one chance you had left to have some interesting writing. Yuki's parents should have been complicit in using the dangerous technology, which would have challenged her ideals and given an opportunity for her to grow up. Instead its incredibly dumb and boring that they were good people that didn't know what they were doing is wrong. Which makes them totally incompetent leaders who aren't even really running the country. Dumb, stupid, bad. At least the mech action is alright.

>It was not, it's really bad, easily the worst thing I'm watching this season.

You should watch more stuff before you talk like this. This isn't even in my bottom 5. I'd put it squarely middle of the road for modern seasonal anime.

>You should watch more stuff before you talk like this.

I started with 30 shows and currently still watching 22, not counting shorts. Sure, on a per-episode basis this isn't that bad, characters are written decently, production values aren't terrible. If you look at the story of any single episode, only a couple of them are retarded, but as a whole it's a really bad anime. It's very unfun to watch. The only competition it has for the 22nd spot is Domestic na Kanojo, which is a fair match, but unlike EnD's ever-present constant badness, DnK has spikes of being terrible and then long periods of being okay.

Who in their right minds thought that this was a good enough story for a fucking anime original, I have no idea. It's like Sweden commissioned the nips for the most basic "war is bad" anime. Should've adapted a manga or another isekai harem LN if this is the best they can do.

>directed by Suzuki Toshimasa

>magic space crystals and ancient fucking nanomachines are being used as a green allegory

If you took out the mechs I wouldn't be able to tell it apart from a Star Trek episode.

>This isn't even in my bottom 5.

What kind of shit are you watching for this to be true? I mean sure it's not a 0/10 or probably even lower than a 2, but what possesses you to stick with almost a half dozen shows that are worse than this?

>watching 22 shows

I'm am genuinely surprised you are watching 21 other shows that you think are better than this. I assume its just a matter of taste as may become clear below.

>What kind of shit are you watching for this to be true?

I am watching 19 shows, not including shorts. Here is a list of the shows I think are worse than Egao no Daika:

>Date A Live S3

>Dimension High School

>Domestic na Kanojo (maybe)

>Kemono Friends S2

>Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai

>Mahou Shoujo Tokushen Asuka (maybe)

>Pastel Memories (maybe)

>Promised Neverland

I don't want to hear it from Promised Neverland fans. It seems like a terrible adaptation. There are no characters and I find it extremely boring.

I find Egao no Daika pretty generic but its not as boring or downright terrible as other shows. I am interested to see how the story unfolds which is really not the case for a lot of other shows airing this season. I feel like people were disappointed that the loli princess didn't go full Fuhrer mode, and so have looked on this pretty mediocre but harmless show through an overly harsh lens. The animation quality is pretty awful but the mech fights are surprisingly decent by modern standards.

>Date A Live S3

Was going to pick it up, but didn't.

>Dimension High School

Didn't pick it up.

>Domestic na Kanojo (maybe)

That, yes.

>Kemono Friends S2

It's not very good, but it rarely pulls anything annoying. KF2 is in my bottom 5 though.

>Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai

I don't see how, unless you are into plane autism and can actually tell how all the fights are bullshit. I'd at least put it above the 5/10 mark, something like a 6.

>Mahou Shoujo Tokushen Asuka (maybe)

Yeah, I dropped it.

>Pastel Memories (maybe)

It's a low-budget anime, it was never going to be anything great, but I think most episodes are fun enough.

>Promised Neverland

Didn't pick it up.

>I feel like people were disappointed that the loli princess didn't go full Fuhrer mode

Thing is, they constantly keep making the preparations for her to fuck some shit up, and they never follow up, there's always just more suffering and bullshit. They're still doing this right now. If the anime was simply about loss during war, they wouldn't need to make shit up about the princess being a great tactician, they wouldn't need to constantly hang this (retarded) dilemma over every single Kingdom episode where the princess has to choose between the Kingdom and her completely pointless, unreasonable pacifism that gets proven to be wrong time and time again.

I can't actually tell if it's intentional or the writer and director are just complete retards though, maybe they actually think that Hime's pacifism is actually a reasonable position that someone would try sticking with for any length of time in a war.

This was the absolute stupidest time to poke her sense of empathy, is this woman a spy?
