Episode 1 is out. How Do you like the new animu about Cripple Fighter and his little boy (female) sidekick title character?

Personally, I enjoyed the first episode. The animation looks good and I like the art. The opening song might seem a bit trashy but it still get's me hyped.

I know I took way to many screencaps but in my defense, Dororo is really cute.

Still, seeing the parts of his early chilhood animated would be amazing.

Most people have no need to learn english without accent.

>I don't see why anybody would hate it and not many people do.

If I hear engrish during OP/ED or from a character that's supposed to speak it fluently, I just can't take the show seriously and lose immersion.

>Most people have no need to learn english without accent.

Engrish is not about accent, it's about being unable to pronounce the words correctly (and poor grammar). Japanese have this stupid habit of using only the syllables that are present in their language.

Take "za warudo" for example. It's so fucking distorted you wouldn't even be able to tell that those are supposed to be English words if you didn't know the meme.

English is ridiculously easy to learn, there's no excuse. Only 20-25% of English speakers are native speakers (m*tts won't learn this in school). Besides, nobody is making japs write songs/talk in English. They have the best chan anyway.

>English is ridiculously easy to learn

I seriously hope you don't actually believe this. It's only "easy" when you have a vested interest in learning it, in the case of Japan that would mean being a westaboo or having some specific interest with a community that mostly speaks English. When all the media you're exposed to is either in your native language or gets dubbed/subbed in your native language and your only experience with English is having it taught as just another subject in school, English is very hard to learn. This goes for any language, English just happens to have a lot of non-native speakers in the west west of Japan, that is, due to weak local culture meaning everyone, young people especially, have to either learn it or not understand 90% of the media they encounter because most of it comes from the anglosphere.

As a language, English is a fucking mess.

The original anime had a typical Japanese combination of extremely serious subject matter yet very lighthearted humor. It wasn't grim and gritty but it wasn't exactly Astro Boy either.

The PS2 game had a much more serious take on the story from beginning to end, making it feel more like Berserk (which probably adopted the concept of "marked man continually hunted by spirits and demons" from Dororo).

In the movie they did something similar but kept the more grim tone overall while, at the most odd times, having a kick-in-the-nuts gag kind of joke. Weird tonal problem.

In both the anime and PS2 game, although Dororo was always the lovable comic relief Hyakkimaru wasn't eternally stoic. He was serious-minded but had an occasionally sarcastic tone about him that could let Dororo's personality bounce some funny lines. I think the movie somewhat had this too but it sucked so I forget a lot of it.

It seems as though this new iteration is going for the most severe imagining of the story. Still it misses the mark on certain things. The scene with baby Hyakki pushing himself to eat from the bowl is iconic and highly important as it conveys not just the dire state of the child but also his superhuman perseverance which will be the crux of his character throughout.

Instead they just show him for shock value.

I also don't like the upskirt shots on Dororo. He's a character that is a very young kid who you're supposed to think of in that sense. There's no reason aside from comedic value to show any part of him--unless they are taking for granted the audience already knows he's a she and want to fanservice a child.

I'm not digging a lot of this already.

Maybe but again it's not much darker than the manga. It's a blood-soaked time period, a lord sacrifices his own son for power, people a getting cut up or even melted, neither version is very happy story. I don't want to discuss it too much to avoid spoilers for those who haven't read it yet but I assume one of the next few episodes will be about an other dark chapter in Hyakkimaru's past which is also in the manga.

The Doc's backstory in this version is darker but he didn't really get much focus in the manga. Here we see that he is driven by guilt, in the manga he was just a really nice person and medical genius.

Hyakkimaru is of course the biggest change and I think that's also what makes him more interesting. Since he can't really express or sense emotions now he's a much colder character. In the manga he's acts just like a normal person and has found ways to perfectly cope for his lack of senses and voice. That makes him more relatable but also a bit more generic.

I think it's notable that Dororo is actually nicer here than in the early chapters of the manga.

>What does Hyakkimaru's name mean?

>Hyakkimaru [hya-key-mah-roo] is the name of a 16th century Japanese shogun. It is also a Japanese phrase derived from two kanji which means "high" or "towering" and "long" or "watery".[4] Nicknamed "The Watery Tower" by his enemies for his defensive strategies and unique name, Hyakkimaru Bakagaiji was the second greatest military leader in Japan's history. Elected personally by Emperor Nongai who ruled Japan from 1656-1676, he was a noteworthy samurai until an attack while horseback left him crippled in all four limbs, leaving him unable to directly participate in battle.[3]

>Notable for his defense of the Nikinai, Hawadori and Kyuushu provinces by use of aqueducts and waterfalls in his strategies against the invading mongols, his stellar record is marred by the genocide committed at Okawahari.[citation needed]

>In 1857 the Diet voted to erase all evidence of this black mark on Hyakkimaru's accomplishments, even to the point of striking the province of Okawahari from all Japanese maps. They claimed it was to "protect civic and national dignity" during wartime. The move was subsequently criticized by Japanese historian Dr. Satoshi Kawahara. On July 5, 1859 Dr. Kawahara claimed to have the last evidence of Hyakkimaru's genocide at Okawahari. Five days later Dr. Kawahara was found in a public bathroom bleeding out from a wound across his neck. His death was declared a heart attack.

>The Diet denies all allegations of censorship.[3] Japan has yet to officially recognize the province of Okawahari or the genocide which took place there.[4]

Too bad we didn't get to see him die from Hyakki's perspective but I guess they'll save those "fading of life" scenes for flashbacks.

I did like the fight scenes. No over the top acrobatics, just a simple duel. Him feeling a cut for the first time was nicely subtle too.

 No.902925

>>902897

This is the reason I don't like this take on the story without the telepathy or intuition, and not just because Hyakkimaru is less of a character until he actually gets to communicate.

Without supernatural stuff to help Hyakkimaru understand the world around him he is literally going from a life without feeling to suddenly having skin. He goes from being deaf since infancy, blind since infancy, to hearing and seeing.

Do you know the kind of therapy and training it takes to help someone hear again? See again? They have to learn how to control their eyes because it's so much information to take in they don't know what to do with it. Hearing? How about volume? How about tone? Not to mention how severely autistic and worse, mentally crippled this would make Hyakkimaru since he literally will be unable to form words, unable to understand vocal inflections (joy, sadness, sarcasm especially) etc.

And speaking of, what kind of jello brain non-person is Hyakkimaru at this point? He has had no form of proper communication whatsoever. Do you know what that does to a developing child?

>inb4 overthinking it

No they under-thought it when they decided to do this stark pseudo-"realistic" take on the story. I bet they think they can just have Hyakkimaru learn from Dororo talking to him, and then he'll learn how to speak from Dororo and it'll be all heart warming etc. But it's just stupid! That's not how human anatomy or psychology works! That's now how anything works!

Make it magic or don't bother.

 No.902947

He's not completely senseless. He can see spirits of humans and demons, he can tell evil spirits from good or neutral spirits, and he's very proficient in combat so his 'vision' is good enough to recognize subtle movements from people. He seems to be able to identify individuals, and also communicates with certain individuals that hang around him a lot. Yes, it would be weird if he got his voice back and suddenly started composing soliloquies, but it's not like he was living in a black box completely detached from the outside world his whole life.

It is magic though. There are literally demons and monsters and ghosts and cursed swords all over the place. A child being born with no skin, no organs of sense and no vocal chords wouldn't even survive, let alone become a badass wandering monster hunter with 15th century cybernetic limbs. It's already a complete fantasy in those aspects, so why not in the regaining his senses aspect as well? You could just say that he retroactively gains all the use of his senses he missed out on before and only needs a bit of experience to get used to them again, like someone who's been locked in a dark prison cell and hasn't been able to use his eyes instead of someone who was born blind.

There's many comedic parts, anachronistic jokes, references and other little gags in the manga, it kinda feels like Japanese-Asterix at times. But it's still the same "guy sacrifices his kid for power"-story and when it get's dark it get's really dark.

Why not read it yourself when the series is over? Might take some time to get used to the art but it's worth it.

>>902751

Same advice for you but I'll spoil you that much: No, for several reasons. The whole Hyakki being the "child of light"-thing was game exclusive and so was Dororo being created by the demons fiends. She has a completely different backstory, which we might see next episode. Also, the manga is open-ended since the story was never really finished so the game's ending was original too. Many events and characters were changed for the game. I liked that, since it has many surprises even if one has seen the other version before.

I can't say much about the old anime yet, currently watching it. It's pretty good but I don't think the buff look really fits Hyakkimaru and I'm not sure about why they added a tiny dog with a gay hat. It's nice that the new series refenrenced that in ep 1 though.

I haven't seen the movie but I doubt it's worth watching.

This episode reminded me of a famous late 80s anime movie I won't say lest some get spoiled. You know the one famous for that scene.

I think it's better this way, otherwise one would get the feeling that he wouldn't never get seriously wounded because MC. The guy lost his leg but it's not like he's an ordinary cripple, he will go back to jumping and shit as soon as he get a new wooden one.

In fact, him getting real limbs seems detrimental to the guy since he has only known how to fight with orthopedics ones and there are strategies that wouldn't work if they were made of bones and flesh. Going back to 2 wooden legs may be for the best. Now he can catch 2 cursed swords at the same time.

At the very least, I'm glad they changed things up so much. That's way better than just having a re-make and it actually keeps me interested in what's going to happen next and how they will adapt the other parts.

He obviously has some kind of telepathy or intuition, he has the ability to understand what they are trying to communicate to him to some degree, just because they don't spell out all the abilities his soul-sight involves doesn't mean he's not demonstrated to have them. Regarding learning to understand spoken speech after being deaf all your life, yes this is normally very difficult, but Hyakkimaru isn't a normal person, also he could learn to match what words people are saying to what he's seeing in their souls to aid him in more quickly figuring out what given sentences, intonations, etc. mean what in what context. It is fantasy after all, and I can't see why a super strong demon hunter with soulsight and the power to grow new limbs would not be more adept at quickly learning speech than the average ex-deaf person.

So, the guy was a saint and had a monster girl fetish.

Seems ok.

>anime original monstergirl

>slightly smug Hyakkimaru

That was a nice episode. I feared that it would have a much more forced drama ending but the things went way better than I expected. Good thing Dororo finally got some some more time to act like a bratty goofball too.

Too bad about the QUALITY but I guess that was to be expected after the last episodes.

Spiders truly make the best wives.

It seems there is not rest for the weak or the righteous. Then what use is there for conciseness or empathy in this world?

It's because they have their priorities straight. Like mantises, spiders do not simply eat the males post-coitus, but only do so if absolutely necessary for the continued survival of their offspring. Spiders are simply the corporate CEO mothers of the animal kingdom/anime world.

Office Lady~

Good thing we had an healing episode for once. This show is quite gritty and dark, and we needed this "humans can be the most horrible, where even monsters can develop compassion" after the horror that was episode 6.

I was fearing the poor sod would watch Spider Waifu getting killed, or Spider Waifu watch him die, only for her to go apeshit on those shitty guards. I really doubt it, but I hope they show up later on, living a decent life, with 10 spider loli daughters.

>human takes in and shows an inordinate amount of compassion to a monstergirl as she also warms up to him

>but forbidden love is not meant to be, so they must run away together

Damnit, right in my weak spot.

And now I need to find more doujins where a hero or some guy finds a monstergirl the village wants to kill, except they instead end up fucking eachother and start a loving family
