When they said this was directed by the same guy who did GuP I was excited. But there's a severe lack of military autism here. The fights don't seem even slightly realistic. It's just planes doing whatever the fuck the studio wants without any heed played to their actual performance characteristics.

>Although even so, I did notice that they went out of their way to mention how the planes are supposed to have unique flight characteristics, the girls' apparently not being very good, which then was pretty much ignored in the dogfight.

They sort of didn't do that, albeit the dogfighting was retarded quick barrel rolls and sustained turns are the Ki-43s bread and butter.

Problem was while the planes seemed to move at least somewhat like their RL counterparts the tactics applied by the Pilots were completely asinine.

The N1K Jobbers should've floored their engines and kept going straight/dove down hard in case one of the Pirate Zeroes got on their six, that way they could've leisurely gained the altitude+distance necessary to BnZ the Zeroes into submission.

The N1K guy having less kills than Kirie does make sense though, early on in the Pacific war the Nips faced lots of poorly trained Pilots in outdated aircraft who tried to turnfight them at low speed which Nip planes excelled at, with sufficient skill one can rack up alot of kills very quickly in such knife brawls.

High speed energy fighters on the other hand require much more strategy and caution, they'd want to keep as much speed and a superior position when attacking an enemy as they're very vulnerable at low speeds.

This usually leads to lots more setup and cooperation behind each attack, ideally the target dies on the first pass but if he evades and his friends show up it can take a long time to get a kill if both parties/squadrons act in a disciplined fashion.

It seems like it's going to be pretty good even if it won't be autisticly accurate. It's not like GuP was either. The CG was pretty good though it seemed a bit strange to use traditional animation for certain parts like the opening bar scene with the freelancers. I guess they figured it would save them a bit if they didn't create models for a bunch of guys who were going to die right off the bat anyway.

Not even for the dog fight. While in the bar its mentioned they have "over 200 stars," which apparently is a big deal. It would've been nice if they all had different planes. Like the plane was a reflection of their personality? But thats not how aircraft are grouped I guess? Like you don't see different aircraft clumped together unless there are several others of the same kind/model.

>>897470

I guess? Not a plane autist But if the pirates weren't green then you'd think they would've performed a bit better? Same with the jobbers.

 No.897505

>>897504

>While the CGI looks good, it's so distracting when you see them next to 2D characters.

There are times it can look fine having the two side by side (FAG worked, since the CG characters were inherently different than the 2D ones already) but if you have CGI and 2D side-by-side that different only by whether they're important, it is pretty jarring.

 No.897520

I was looking forward to it because of the director, but this was a huge disappointment. I was immediately taken out of it because of the clash between 2D and CG. While I'm not a fan of CG at all, if the show was full CG I could look past it, but having the two right next to each other is so jarring. On top of that, it feels a bit like a slap in the face when you see decent looking 2D animation used on nobodies who die in the first episode while the main characters are horrible CG models. They also seem to be using 2D for some recurring characters, although the captain and boss lady had CG models in the OP despite being 2D the entirety of this episode.

Other than my problems with the visual style, I found the dogfight to be pretty boring. I can't comment on how realistic it was, but at least in GuP Mizushima did a good job of making the tank battles exciting.

The sound design was my favorite part. All the little mechanical sounds of the plane getting ready to fly were one thing, but then when they're in the air, it was pretty hype. Wide shots of the planes where they sound like they're cutting through air, then lock-down shots on the wing with deep, roaring turbulence and audio that peaks and booms like Vietnam War tapes. I got REALLY into it, and I am not super into planes or anything myself.

I figured something like that would come up. Like I said, I don't know anything about planes, so I didn't notice. But I kinda knew in the back of my head it'd probably be what MGS4 was to me: media praises MGS4 for its weapon effects and how it's a 'gun nut's dream', but then you play it and the reload animations and fire controls are hilariously inaccurate. It's just weird for them to keep fucking up these basic aspects considering the amount of freely accessible/pirateable material there is when it comes to plane autism in CY+4.

 No.898893

Airplane autism was ok. Everything else was shit. Girls' 3d models look ugly, made even more annoying with forced moeshit "quirky" personalities. Higher quality 2d animation wasted on completely unlikeable buffoons whose only purpose is to prop up the superiority of the protagonists in the most ham-fisted way. Pacing and dialogue has no sense of dramatic timing at all, with conversations and events just happening in flat sequence.

Goddamn it I really wanted to like this, but it's just so mediocre.

I wouldn't even mind the CG so much if they would at least stick to it. I've sat through full CG shows before, but seeing the main characters drawn in at least decent looking 2D for a few scenes, and then them being horrible 3D in the next is just a slap in the face.

 No.902065

I gave it 3 episodes, I'm done. The CG is so jarring that I literally cannot focus on the 10 minutes of exposition at the beginning. I sped it up 2x this episode and somehow it actually helped my comprehension. The fights are all "helpless retards get owned by air pirates without even one kill on the opposition, extra-dimensional beings show up in their flying potatoes, pirates get outmaneuvered and owned without even one kill, Kyrie KYRIE eats pancakes, everyone else eats crow." Granted they did break the pattern this episode, but only just barely. And I'm not even a plane autist.

I don't even blame you. This show is so unbearably dumb I'm close to dropping it as well. There's just no choreography to the fights at all which makes it boring as shit.

Not a planefag here, I'm just enjoying the cute girls and the friends they make along the way. I never watched GUP but I am guessing it left tankfags similarly disappointed? I'm enjoying it enough through my own blissful ignorance, so I'm sticking with it.

I've never seen anyone talk shit about GuP much so I'd guess it was more accurate.

>I'm enjoying it enough through my own blissful ignorance

I don't know what technical things they get wrong, but it's still annoying how formulaic the fights are. Doesn't matter who the pirates are or in what planes, doesn't matter who the allies are or in what planes, every fight so far has played out almost exactly the same way. At least next episode ought to be different with the girls on the offensive.

 No.902265

>>902261

>>902262

I think GuP gets a free pass since it's just a fun show with likable characters and over-the-top goofyness so nobody bothers to complain that the tanks are completely unrealistic. GuP was basically a generic sports anime but sports anime and manga are successful for a reason. They make you empathize with and root for the main characters and they have a progression to them.

This show isn't as good so people are more inclined to scrutinize it. I think the big mistake they made is to have it be another generic "team of cute girls with one-dimensional personalities fights faceless generic enemies" type of show. There isn't anyone to root for because our main characters spend their entire screentime either emotionlessly shooting down copy-pasted enemy planes with minimal effort or spouting quirky quirkiness at their quirky friends at a Teekyuu-tier pace.

 No.902290

>>902262

>>902265

Aside from the jarring 2D-3D shit they do; its fairly bland. I wish they'd do something that would give us a reason to watch this group specifically. You know like, "Why would I watch these particular characters in this setting?" Nothing bad is going to happen to them. Sure they might get shot down once, maybe twice. But after that? Nope, nothing. They're not gonna get stuck in some rigged contract. They're not gonna loose one or two of their craft. Their zeppelin is gonna keep trucking on. No sky pirates or corporate mercenaries or even military will stop them either. Shit, they could all be puttering around in propeller planes in this particular wasteland but else where they could have jets and god-knows what else! I'm now willing to be that they're gonna be put up against a jet or maybe an actually good aircraft, that, no matter how much you suck at flying you can't fuck this up, kinda aircraft and these girls will still win.

Its comparison to GuP is getting more and more vague. In GuP they won all the time, but we actually saw how they had to build their team from scratch and rise to the top. In this show? none of that. Here's your decent plane, here's your skill, here's your support crew and here's your super zeppelin. Now, go forth and make us ask, "If you're so good then why the fuck are you still at the bottom?"

>cute girls with one-dimensional personalities fights faceless generic enemies" type of show.

This most recent episode have given some hopes that it is improving in those regards. The pirate band had a theme, a style, and characters; I am hoping future enemies will get more and more out there/employ varying fighting styles that force the fights to play out differently. I am sure future episodes will have adverse weather/terrain conditions that will do this as well (fighting in dense clouds, fighting in a canyon, etc.) I liked that they set up a supporting character for this episode too, with the mayor, and how it had a nice little payoff. In episode two they set up some political underpinnings of the frontier which I think can potentially make it more interesting when they go into towns looking for work.

I decided to drop it on episode 3 but still watched this one just to get a conclusion on the Raiden plot and I'm still unconvinced. It was definitely the best episode so far but if they keep making one good episode for every 3 bad ones then it's not worth following through with. I still don't like any of the characters, the setting feels under-explored and the 3DCG is just ugly.

I think the idea might have had potential in more talented hands. It's a shame.

GuP, while not accurate in its portrayal of tank capabilities, still had plenty of tank autism and it had a notable absurdity to the combat from the very beginning that didn't leave you thinking "these guys did no research", but instead "that's so wrong it's hilarious".

Also, the fights were quite different from one another and did somewhat reflect the doctrines of the nations the schools represented. This show's fights are essentially identical.

It's getting hard to tell where the line is between visual gags and worldbuilding.

>"Odd" language

So its either Fallout, or some weird portal thing. Kylie also mentioned water craft. Even though the seas have dried up; people still know about them. That means this Yufang is disconnected with the rest of the world. Probably both literally and physically.

I'd hope it was a shitpost, but with the crap we have been presented with so far, it could legitimately be their moon.

Now I am wondering who would be that unknown ace. Can be the old fart, the magician or that gentleman.

>>906944

Could be worse.

>Why proceed in this carbon based lifeform.

For the doujin about that?

>best pilot

From what we've seen, probably magician from last episode, or the guy who shot down Kylie this episode.

>best girl

Kylie.

>>906944

I had to go back to make sure I was seeing things correctly.

I would had asked about best female pilot...

>Kylie

I like her but too generic. I hope every girl get episode for them.

Are they like aliens? This world is weird and painfully underdeveloped.

Wormhole I'm guessing, possibly a military weapon with unexpected side effects. I think she mentioned something about Yufang planes being designed to take off from short ship runways, so Yufang is probably an empire on a small island that is typically engaged in naval warfare, surrounded by powerful neighbors, it was still able to maintain a colonial empire by colonizing parallel dimensions. A large-scale invasion by its neighbors caused the Yufang to abandon their colonies once fighting became desperate and colonial troops were mobilized to defend their home island. The wormhole generators were then destroyed possibly on accident by bombardment of their capital.

 No.907110

>>907106

Nah, Yufang is probably parallel/real Japan. Since everything is Japanese made, either Japan won WW2, or its some "well, we found this portal to a different place and now we can colonize it so its pro Japan" ala GATE. But something happened and now they're seperated from elsewhere.

>>906997

I don't think she's particularly generic, at least in comparison to the rest of the cast. And Emma is certainly the worst offender of being "too generic" out of the main characters. Of course her being the only one with an episode completely focused on her so far helps, but even if you had asked last episode I probably would've said Kylie or Chika.

Julia's been moving up the ranks the last couple episodes too.
