I think I understand the problem. Ultimately it stems from the fact that this comic is a fanfiction based on the lives of the author and friends.
Fanfiction works because people already have a clear understanding of the characters. They already empathise with them and care about them, otherwise they wouldn't be reading the fanfiction. As long as everyone has experienced the same source material, it all works out.
The problem is that in this case only the author and friends actually know the source material. To them it's a great story about their fursonas. To everyone else it suffers from a lack of characterisation.
I'll just add this to my list of reasons why nobody should ever create a fursona.

With Pokemon and Digimon, there's a clear separation between the humans and the beasts, so to speak. It's clearly bestiality if the two fuck, rather than an anthromorphic mess.
That separation is important. Because believe it or not, bestiality is more acceptable to more people than furfaggotry.
There's also the aspect of the fanbase that must draw themselves in style. Similar to ponyfaggotry, Sonic has its own race or style of sorts. Which gives 'artists' something to trace any 'OC' into.
When someone draws a fantasy Pokemon, it'd still be a pokemon. When someone draws a fantasy Sonic thing, it'll be a messy half person.
