Pretty much this. Reddit is great as an aggregate site, plus it definitely has some value for humor and stories in the comments, but any meaningful discussion on there is just worthless. A lot of times whoever gets the first comment in there that sounds anything close to intelligent will get massive upvotes and anyone who dissents will get buried. The system itself prevents anything other than the circlejerk happening.
This even happens, albeit on a much smaller scale, on the smaller subs like /r/abdl. With so many less comments it's still easy to read the buried ones, but it's pretty easy to see why anyone who gets buried a couple times wouldn't stick around. It just makes for a flat and boring community, which is exactly what the place is. Still, /r/abdl is a good 5-minute time-sink every day and, like the rest of reddit, is a good place to pick up on any news or product releases I may not have found about elsewhere.
tl;dr Good place for news, shit place for discussion and community.
