Adelaide

On Tuesday, June 16, 8ch was in receipt of around ten takedown notices for a single thread on the /aus/ Australia board for offenses ranging from "child pornography" to "revenge porn".

The thread was >>>/aus/16660 ( archived: https://archive.is/KSZZF ). I rapidly reviewed the thread and came to the conclusion that no child porn had been posted on the site, and that if any revenge porn had been, it would need to be deleted through the proper channels. That is, as always, photos would only be removed with properly executed DMCAs.

The copyright on photographs is quite an interesting subject, because the copyright of a photograph always belongs to the person who took it. So, for a selfie, the subject and owner of the photo are the same, but in almost all other cases this is not true.

When I informed the people in the thread of their situation, and that they could in fact get their photos removed with a DMCA, they went hilariously ballistic and even got into local publications in Adelaide, one (paywall), two (paywall) and three.

After a bit more email back and forth with one of the "victims" (I use this loosely, we're implying that a woman who smiled with her tits uncovered is at one time strong and empowered and another time a victim, of course) I discovered the actual crux of their complaints, which was hilarious to me.

The women sending me emails were not complaining to me about photos uploaded on 8chan at all, but actually were complaining to me about a screenshot of a directory listing of an unknown third party's local computer that that third party had posted on 8chan, shown below.

As was obvious to me but seemingly not the Australian "Press" or the Australian Thought Police, we do not have the power to delete things off of people's local computers, only photos uploaded onto our servers.

The board creator of /aus/ deleted many more photos than I would have myself of those actually uploaded in the thread, but him being Australian and afraid of SAPOL caused him to do so (God help him, for that Prison Island resembles Orwell's Airstrip One more with each passing day).

Indeed, you will probably never get the photos you are trying to suppress totally deleted from every website in existence, that's the cost of being a slut.

However, you can get them deleted from 8ch provided they are actually uploaded, and not just a picture of someone's directory listing is uploaded and provided that you follow protocol, which means emailing or mailing in a DMCA request.

Thanks for the laugh Australia, it was sorely needed after some events of the past week.
