My friend and I (both guys) wanted to go out this friday to watch a movie. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to ask my crush out to come with us, but my friend says it would be awkward if it's just the three of us. What do you think?

ask your crush if she's interested with the option to bring friends and maybe have a drink & chat afterwards

OP, do you want your crush with you and him?
Generally it's a better idea to spend time with your crush alone. It's getting a serious thing and more than something about fun and friendships.
So I guess, you want to spend and improve the situation with your crush. How often did you have seen her alone till today? If already a few times, then you can join you and your friend. If no, I would suggest to see her first alone.

This is coming from a girl-

I understand that going with a friend can kind of be comforting since it may be a little awkward and obviously you guys aren't serious so it can be friendly and fun. However, if he doesn't want to go don't let that hold you back! Go do something with her but don't make it to romantic. Just have fun, do something fun and I promise you she will respect that! Good luck!:)
