08ff40 No.17133

I've just set up https://git.vidyagames.net as a free git repository for private independent video game development. Feel free to create an account there now and get devving.

A few quick points:

I get a security warning going to the page

This is because I've set up the site with SSL (so that login and use is secure), but the certificate is self-signed at the moment, because I can't afford the $60 to have a CA sign it right now. I wouldn't want to do that out of pocket anyway, and I don't see the need to drop that money for no added security, when I really just want transmission to be encrypted. You will be safe adding it as an exception.

Are there limits on private repositories? Collaborators?

No limits. The service is free, and donations are optional.

Terms? Restrictions?

All repositories and projects must be video game related. They must either be video game projects, video game supporting libraries, code for a video game website, or something else like that.

If it sits on the fence, it's probably safe.

Please don't load repositories up with assets. It's a code repository, not a big fileserver. I'm not against setting up a parallel secure asset server for free use, but I don't want to do that out of pocket right now, so if that happens it will have to be in the future.

What's the point?

Github repositories cost money, and BitBucket has limits on collaborators in private repositories. I also like the idea of a dedicated site for this community.

I also have fun hosting shit like this.

Enjoy. Feel free to give me comments or questions or whatever.

You might want to include a how-to. For example, I can program, but I have no idea how FTP or git services work.

Also, how is this hosted? Isn't it possible you could fuck up somehow and everyone loses everything?

There are tons of git guides available on the internet. You can google them. Noted, though. I may stick a link on the front page or something.

> Also, how is this hosted?

It's a simple Debian vps hosted in Denver.

> Isn't it possible you could fuck up somehow and everyone loses everything?

It's not backed up yet (backups are planned), so it's possible I could fuck up and take down the service, but git is distributed, so every person who is working on a project has a full working repository on their workstation, meaning if it dies, the only thing that will possibly be really lost is any project wiki.

>There are tons of git guides available on the internet

Which means that git is widespread. Why not just use github or something, rather than an anon's project?

>but git is distributed, so every person who is working on a project has a full working repository on their workstation

But if you're a solo dev and your machine dies, you have the only working copy; if your service has a hiccup, everything is gone forever

>Why not just use github or something

Github requires that all your code is public unless you pay for it.

> But if you're a solo dev and your machine dies, you have the only working copy; if your service has a hiccup, everything is gone forever

That's a given no matter what you're doing, but that's low risk. That involves somebody's computer failing at the same time that my server fails, and is very unlikely. Backups will be implemented. This is about collaboration primarily anyway. If you are devving completely alone, you can just use an external hard drive to store your code or something.

Don't we already have gitgud.net?

You're right. I wasn't aware of that. That one does make this one a bit redundant.

Oh well.

Or used to, since it's shutting down and .io is replacing it. Still, having a one that's explicitly tied to the community would be kind of neat. Especially with all the assaults on 8chan it would be neat to have a place to regroup.

>I can't afford the $60 to have a CA sign it right now

You can get a cert for $5/year from a good CA, or free from WoSign (which is trusted by browsers)

>no added security

MITM attacks are a thing.

>for no added security

this is not true. If an attacker man-in-the-middled the first connection, they could get their CA cert trusted if people just clicked "add exception". A more hackey but correct way of doing this would be to distribute your cert here on 8ch so we could borrow the 8ch cert for it's secure connection.

1) zip your cert

2) choose an image (png works best)

3)open command prompt

4)copy /b a.png + b.zip c.png

5)upload c.png

6)we all download, unzip the image, and install the cert

Buttbucket has free private repos

https://ssls.com $4.99 a year for DV SSL cert.

This is obviously dead now.

Use gitgud.io instead.

If gitgud.io dies at any point we'll be able to prop up one of our own at a moment's notice anyway.

If any mod stumbles upon this, you can go ahead and delete this thread.
